Chisholm insists place in Europe is fully deserved

QUEEN of the South manager Gordon Chisholm insists the Doonhamers richly deserve their place in next season's Uefa Cup after their Scottish Cup exploits.
Chisholm's side are building towards Saturday's domestic final at Hampden where they will face Rangers.

But with Rangers already assured of their place in the Champions League or its qualifying stages, Queens will take the Scottish Cup's allocated
pass to Europe even if they lose to Walter Smith's side.

The First Division side beat Aberdeen in their semi-final, and Chisholm told the Scottish Sun: "We're there on merit and if I hear anyone else say for the good of Scottish football we shouldn't be there this week, I'll be an angry man."

The fourth-placed side in the Scottish Premier League could take their place in the Uefa Cup in future seasons, at the expense of teams qualifying as cup runners-up. But under the current rules it will be Queens – win or lose on Saturday – who join third-placed SPL side Motherwell in the competition next term.

Chisholm added: "I'm not saying that Hibs or Dundee United might not go further than us in the UEFA Cup, but we're there through merit, not luck."

Chisholm led Queens to a fourth-place finish in the First Division and insists the Dumfries club can aim even higher. They have sold out their 15,000 ticket allocation for the cup final, and Chisholm said: "Queens could be an SPL club and you will see the backing we can command on Saturday."

Yes QoS qualify because those are the current rules but this must be stopped for next season!
The performance of the runners-up are a constant embarrassment to Scottish Football.
I'm a Dundee fan and DFC qualified this way after losing to Rangers in 2003 but we did not deserve it, we beat Falkirk (aet) ICT and Aberdeen on the way, 3 games then a loss is hardly enough to merit representing your country in Europe.
If Scotland's coefficient last year had improved by 1 place then there'd have been be one more spot for all of us in Europe this year (Romania has 5):

One more place higher would have given direct entry to the CL (see Russia's position)
This coefficient is calculated by the average performance, so Rangers get lots of points, Celtic a good amount, Aberdeen a few then Dunfermline pretty much nowt, average it out and all the good work is undone.
Here is a view showing the subsequent year (Unofficial so not necessarily true but looks pretty well calculated) It shows that if Scotland gets 9th seeding there'd be 6 (that's right SIX) European berths!:

This is surely worth changing the current rules for!

What a load of old cobblers spoken by big team fans. If you are a fan of a smaller team then the SC was the only realistic route to Europe and the 'glamour' of playing (and getting beat unfortunately) some diddy team from Reykjavik or Gothenburg (guess who I follow) but the experience is something else and some of the best memories I can barely remember are due to gaining entry to Europe via the SC.

I know about the co-efficient and all that cobblers but to remove the UEFA spot means devaluing the Cup because it is all about the luck of the draw and I would be reluctant to deny smaller teams this chance.

Well said #3, a lot of people seem to forget that SPL clubs have embarrassed us in Europe as well.

One issue though, you say "..spoken by big team fans..". Caller #1 is a Dundee fan, a Div 1 side, hardly a big team! ;)
