Striker replicates previous visit to national stadium as Smith's side claim Scottish Cup
QUEEN OF THE SOUTH 2
Tosh 49; Thomson 53

RANGERS 3
Boyd 33, 71; Beasley 43

AS THE final whistle sounded on Rangers' Scottish Cup triumph, the victorious players exchanged firm, unfussy, handshakes and some hurried, self-conscious, hugs. It took a full two minutes for their supporters to pipe up with a chant of "There's not a team like the Glasgow Rangers". As Walter Smith's men completed a rare cup double, there was no pretence from them or their followers that consolation for the loss of UEFA Cup and the league inside the previous ten days could be obtained at Hampden yesterday.

Never mind that in a single full season under Smith, the Ibrox club have now won as many trophies as in the previous three seasons put together. Really, the final was all about ensuring that humiliation was not added to heartache. For the opening 15 minutes of the second period, Queens made that prospect seem frighteningly real. Two goals inside four minutes from Steve Tosh and Jim Thomson cancelled out first half strikes from Kris Boyd and DaMarcus Beasley, and suddenly Rangers were wobbling.

The First Division side cast off the inhibitions that had threatened to make them comfortable opponents for a delicate Rangers. And but for Scott Dobbie catching the ball under his feet in the box after Queens had sliced open a path down the right it could have proved a real test of the Ibrox side's mettle. But with 19 minutes remaining, Queens' defensive frailties returned to haunt them as Boyd rose above Robert Harris to head in a Beasley corner and win the cup for Rangers. At the end of a 68-game season, the Ibrox side had it in them to be winners and two-goal Boyd was the man who gave them that edge, just as he had as a substitute in the CIS Cup final victory over Dundee United in March.

Cue the inevitable chuntering over why Scotland's best finisher and a man who has netted 25 times this season wasn't used more often. But Boyd is made for occasions such as yesterday's, when the opposition might be dogged but would certainly never be described as deft enough to put the shackles on so prime a predator.

A frantic opening was hardly to be expected from two teams who had good reason to feel their way into the encounter. In Rangers' case, this was required to loosen up limbs wearied by exertion and disappointment after a season of undelivered promise. For their part, Queen of the South needed time to get their joints going again after a four-week lay-off. The slow-burning nature of the events on the field was in keeping with the understandably subdued atmosphere among the Rangers support.

In talking up the prospects of an upset that would have been the greatest across 123 Scottish Cup finals, some seemed to lose sight of the remarkable position Rangers had manoeuvred themselves into only a fortnight ago. They may not have been good enough to hold off Zenit St Petersburg in the UEFA Cup final and Celtic in the championship, but these two teams aside, their title-race ending defeat at Pittodrie on Thursday made Aberdeen the only other side to beat them since Werder Bremen three months ago.

The First Division team's tentative approach early on suggested they felt the weight of history pushing down on them. They were compact, and largely successful in locking down space. But they weren't the up-and-at-'em Queens that won so many admirers with their goal bonanza of a 4-3 win over Aberdeen in the semi. They jousted without taking any hits for the first 20 minutes, but then their mindset seemed negative.

Smith's rejigging of his side from the other night initially seemed to offer Rangers the means to focus in on the fragile Queens' defence. Lee McCulloch offered dig – too much when he chopped down Robert Harris horribly to earn a fourth-minute booking – and Beasley, making his first start since November, gave Rangers options in wide areas they had been sadly lacking. And then there was Boyd. It was a near certainty what he would bring to the occasion, and he did not disappoint when opening the scoring in the 33th minute – a full 10 minutes after Beasley should have claimed that honour but didn't when he criminally curled a shot off target from 18 yards after being played in by Boyd.

The Scotland forward showed him how it should be done when, from a free-kick 25 yards out, Barry Ferguson rolled the ball into his path and the striker fair hammered it. A rising effort that took off like a jet plane, it seemed to leave a slipstream on zooming into the top corner.

Queens appear at their most potent when backed into a corner by bigger beasts. Minutes after they went behind, Tosh steamed in on Neil Alexander before Sean O'Connor claimed for a penalty for a nudge by Steven Whittaker. It was one of the rare occasions they took the game to Rangers in the opening period. But then the tie seemed to be taken from them when, two minutes from the break, Jim Thomson and Ryan McCann collided as they sought to intercept a Carlos Cuellar header sent across the box. Their clatter allowed the ball to Beasley, whose shot wasn't powerfully struck and seemed to trundle through keeper Jamie MacDonald.

Queens were a team transformed following the interval. In exhilarating fashion they staged the most unlikely comeback. Sean O'Connor did superbly well to tear past Cuellar in the 49th minute and whip over a cross that Tosh forced in with his hip, without knowing an awful lot about it. Then Thomson made amends for his earlier error by leaping above the Rangers defence and placing a header out of reach of Alexander. Within 20 minutes, however, the Scottish Cup was out of reach of the Dumfries side. They had contributed much to an entertaining final, but not enough to give Rangers more grief than their humungous efforts this season would have deserved.

MAN OF THE MATCH
He may be looking more rotund than he ought to be but when there is a round thing to be stuck in the goal of a certain calibre of opponents, Kris Boyd becomes a lean, mean match-winning goal machine. His cup final double double was the key to Rangers claiming honours this season.

QUICK FACT
Rangers have now lifted the Scottish Cup on 32 occasions and Queens have now have a cup final experience to savour after 89 years in existence.

TALKING POINT
Inevitably, it will be why doesn't Boyd play every week, in part because yesterday's game was mercifully controversy free and played in a great spirit.

Did they go on the Rampage kicking and looting Glasgow
last night or is that just reserved for a loss?

A physically and emotionally weary Rangers team definitely dodged a bullet yesterday, but they are worthy winners of the 2 cups.

On to the preparations for next season - most likely without Hemdani, Davis, Boyd, and possibly (although I hope I'm wrong) Cuellar and McGregor. New players will come in to replace those leaving - and I hope Smith will get a fair chunk of the cash he has generated this year to finance the acquisition of some real quality.

We have to face the lottery of 2 rounds of CL qualification again, but with a lot more confidence than this time last season.

Well done Walter and the Boys. Enjoy the summer break and come back ready to kick @rse!

I think if you layed out all of the arrest statistics (for away games) and put them on a colour pie chart, you would find that the Rangers pie chart is, in fact, among some of the best at this level.

Deafening silence about the free kick than definitely WASN'T and the penalty that definitely WAS. Another dodgy 'victory' for 12-man Rangers. And, as for their whining on about not having the season extended, exactly what did they want: The season to go on and on till they eventually won away from home ? ( apart from the one at Love Rangers Street ! ) Keep Wattie. Keep defending. Keep dreaming.

The backbone of the team (Weir and Dailly) will stay for sure.

Ceullar and Davis have been outstanding at all press interviews.

The coaching partnership of WS and AM has been connected with a move to Barca, but I doubt if they would be attracted by the money on offer, as they are, at the end of the day, good Rangers men.

We will take the one trophy where you have to beat the top teams in the country over and over and get rewarded with a flag, a trophy and a berth at the big table in europe. You guys can have a couple of tin cans you get when you beat the mighty teams of the first division after replays and penalties.
Incase you don't see us next season... we will be the ones playing the Milan's or the Madrids or the Man Us. Enjoy you visits to latvia or Slovakia in August. Send a postcard.

Right up to the last kick of the ball in the Scottish Footballing scene corruption is never far away.
Is it.

Wellllllllll at least so long as Rearrangers have any involvement in the game in question.
And yesterdays sham was no exception.
Was it.

I just wish that Craig Levein was Queen of the Souths manager.
No one could compete with the quality and accuracy of his statements given to the media and broadcast worldwide when Dundee United were similarily dealt with by match day officials.

No one will forget Craigs words when he correctly declared and observed quote,"We would have been better not bothering to turn up today. The referee could have phoned me and said Craig, Rearrangers are going to come away winners today, maybe you and your team would like to make other arrangements. We might as well have stayed in our kips,"end of quote.

Queen of the South were in exactly the same position yesterday.

Scottish Football finished with a bang alright yesterday afternoon.

So much so that the stench of injustice from the fallout clings to the S.C. in precisely the same way it does the Corruption Is Successful variety.

Doesn`t it.

You would think that with Rangers having to play all these games they whine on about they would have at least learned to play open, attractive, attacking football but the old saying 'you can lead a weggie to the football pitch but you cant make him play' still stands the test of time.
QOS, you werent much better, your only answer to supply the forwards was to hoof the ball (as high as possible) up in the general direction of a couple of brave battlers who it must be said when they did get the ball provided the few glimpses of class and excitement to be had.
From being the country who used to supply a continual stream of entertainers we are now the dire exponents of negative football with dont let the other team play the prime objective.
42

Malc.F,

When will it ever end.Beasley throws himself to the ground without any contact and lo and behold Rangers get a free kick from which they scored, why is the very obviously dubious free kick not mentioned in the match report? As for the QOS penalty claim, not quite so obvious but if it had happened up the other end a cert.
Tell me I did not hear right when the biasentattor said that Thompson is in the Scotland squad. He must mean QOS's Thompson surely not the galumphing thug who tries to play for Rangers.
Two cups...yes deserved...no.

*7....Nice attempt at a wind up to mask the pain and frustration of not completing the quadruple. If you think we Celtic fans are miffed at only winning one trophy to the two Rangers won then you really are hurting.

That one trophy just happens to be the one trophy that all teams strive to attain and that one trophy this year means straight into the champions league group stages whilst two trophy Rangers face two qualifying rounds to get into the group stages.

In the end Rangers won the game, but not without a few shaky moments. The look of the players and their reaction after the final whistle was more of relief rather than celebration of a second trophy.

Not you or any other Rangers fan can mask the pain and hurt of blowing it in the league...only an excuse?

On a brighter note, the fact that Boyd scored two goals will only fuel the thorny issue amongst the bear population as to why wally never played him more often.

Rangers fans are keen to narrow this argument down to 'the penalty claim ' which Queens had whereas in actual fact Queens had two:

1.FIRST HALF
Queens player rises to meet the ball in the bow when whittaker barges him from the back, knocking him off balance and preventing him from reaching the ball.
Clever defending? Simply using his body ? Yir erse in persley, Whittaker had no intention of getting the ball...he went for the man, there was contact and we'll never know what the player might have done if allowed to get to the ball inimpeded.

2. SECOND HALF

After some clever play down on the right the ball is cut-back to a Queens player at the edge of the six yard box. He is endeavouring to tee the ball up for a shot at goal when Cuellar comes in and kicks him up in the air. If the first penalty could have been described as soft, there was nothing remotely soft about this one, and as Cuellar was the last man, he would have followed the same fate as he should have done in the Corruption is Successful Cup Final.

Cuellar says that Rangers have had a better season than Celtic.

This suggests that something went seriously wrong when rangers were prioritising the trophies for this season.

The league title carried automatic Champions League entry, the CIS Cup came with a weekend for two in Blackpool and the Scottish Cup came with a free HD Ready 36" television set.

Getting to the last 16 / getting to the UEFA Cup Final ...there MIGHT be a debate there...but getting to the last 8 / reaching the UEFA Cup final ...ermmm..no debate there...reaching the last 8 wins hands down.

What a load of nonsense from the usual Parkhead bigots on this thread. Gers had a magnificent season reaching 3 cup finals including the UEFA Cup and pipped for the SPL title, only because the SPL and Celtic colluded to ensure as many games as possible were crammed into the last few days. Celtic were very, very lucky and got the breaks over the last few weeks. Celtic fans have been quick to crow about reaching the last 16 of the CL yet deny Gers credit for reaching the UEFA Cup Final - remember that diddy cup you lot reached the final of in 2003? Yes, that season when you won nothing out of 4! Remember Gers fans, Naismith and Burke have been out, McCulloch and Beasley missed the last few crucial weeks and we have a good foundation for next season with McGregor (and Alexander), Cuellar, Stevie Smith returning and I hope they keep Kris Boyd. Follow, Follow.

Both whats going on on the park and off the park too.

In the ten days that have passed since Rearrangers fanz mobbed, rioted and looted Manchester City Centre,"Walter" has aged ten years.

We all witnessed and realise that "Walters" Rearrangers would have had a 4th year in the wilderness and trophyless yet again if the laws and rules of the game were applied fairly and squarely in Scotland.
That goes said without fear of honest contradiction.

Where "Walter" needs to take heed is whether or not he can depend on that same level of R.U.I(N.S)being applied in favour of Rearrangers next year.

In light of that uncertainty no one will be surprised if "Walter" makes his excuses follows his instinct and character traits and jumps ship yet again, leaving JesterCoist...his SmilingAss(assistant) in charge.

How about you speak for yourself, and let Celts speak for ourselves?

It brings certain truths to you - I guess you cannot cope.

Only one club I know of has had a plane diverted to a different airport due to the dreadful behaviour of their fans on the flight.

Here is a clue. It was not Rangers.

Dont know. Very confusing. There does seem to be double standards in the moderation here.

Yesterday, I asked Tim:

"Have you been up to Lennoxtown yet?"

It was removed.

I have taken steps to have the moderation improved.

Mobile phones are cheap these days.

Thats why Semtex Fc supporters can afford to throw them at Rangers players.

THE TIMES ONLINE - MAY 16TH, 2008

The chaotic scenes in Manchester on Wednesday night - a Zenit fan stabbed, rioting Rangers fans, and 15 policemen getting injured - were frightening to behold. Moreover, the footage released yesterday and shown on Sky News, of hundreds of Rangers fans charging at police and setting upon one who stumbled to the ground, will make the already weary Ibrox hierarchy cringe.

Rangers have a repeated get-out for these episodes: the script always says this is “just a small minority” of fans. Moreover, as incident upon incident passes with the club’s supporters - at Villarreal in 2006, in Pamplona in 2007 and now in Manchester in 2008 - it is always “heavy-handed policing” and not the Rangers fans themselves who are said to be the blame.

Well, this is no small minority of Rangers supporters, and nor are the Greater Manchester Police renowned for their truncheon-wielding brutality. Instead, this is a football club with a poison somewhere at its core.

How strange.....angry posts about a handful of drunken Celts on a flight 5 years ago, and suggestions Celts threw mobile phones......but when asked to condemn the dozens of drunken, poisoned, baying Rangers supporters who tried to kick to death a Manchester Policeman, our correspondent goes silent.

Who can ever understand the demented mind of Gers?

If only I were allowed to print the same old pash day in day out.

Unfortunately the Scandal Continues Cup was only "won" yesterday, ably aided and abetted by match day officials.
This meant that the "same old pash" as you say, needed updating.

The day that I do not need to post such injustices will be a fine day indeed for Scottish Football.

Scottish Football outside Rearrangers F.C. that is.
Isn`t it.

Dr No,

In a season when Celtic use the death of a very former bit part player (now legend) to get a game postponed. Too many injuries and suspensions to key players. They then fail to call for a postponement for a player who is a real legend and was still employed by the club because it dosen't fit their cheating agenda. They will forever be remembered for using the death of a former player to win the league. As far as I am concerned their welcome to it.

Are they all diddy competitions when celtic enter them at the start of every season?
90

Brother Walfrid,

25/05/2008 11:33:36
Heaven, I'm in heaven...

Three in a row is the biz, and that's why the scottish footballing establishment were so keen to help Rangers every step of theway this season.

It took a thinly veiled threat of legal action by Celtic to persuade the spl not to indulge Rangers with a second league extension. In the bad old days, Rangers would have gotten whatever they wanted with jam on it....that's why they threw such a tantrum when they were told by the spl that rangers are not the centre of the universe. After 80 odd years of getting whatever they wanted, Rangers were never going to gracefully accept that they would have to play by the already bent rules.

Well done to Champions Celtic. It took real guts and determination to win this title.

CHAMPIONEES !!! HAIL!!! HAIL!!!

Celtic enter only the first and second competitions.

As for the third and fourth, we know RFC excel in those areas and we're not that sort of Club.

Isnt Scottish Football fascinating?

I'm looking forward to seeing RFC beligerantly argue that whilst 50 games + are OK for numerous Clubs with £5M p.a. turnover, for £60M p.a. turnover RFC, somehow facing 68 games is unreasonable!!!

I have weighed up the situation (in detail).

Two options open now to Celtic

1. The wee easy option

2. The pain in the a#se hard option.

I think there is no question which one the Celtic board of directors prefer, although some pundits say it is both.

Good post.

For me, during the close season, Scottish Football must face up to Craig Levein instigated efforts to introduce impartial refereeing to our game.

If the game is capable of embracing that concept, odds for RFC winning the SPL would surely lengthen.

Some free advice for the SFA:

Ensure Michael McCurry referees no more top flight games. He has been rumbled.

In your dealings with the English Authorities, please ensure they understand that most Scottish fans behave very well when supporting their Club. The rioting thugs in Manchester represented only one Club: The Rangers FC - by far the worst in Scotland.

Brother Walfrid,

Me thinks tis true what the players are all saying...Gordon Strachan will be leading the bhoys into a third consecutive champions league adventure with a squad better than the one that took us to the last 16 last season.

A £4m Croation internationalist seems to be on the way, and me thinks Big Dermot will loosen the purse strings a bit more besides to make the option of staying at Celtic a more attractive proposition.

I can see Naka having a final season to cherish, possibly his best of all, and Aiden will return even more polished.
Robson and Hartley have just been dynamite these last few months...let's hope that continues.
Brown will return next season better focussed and with a spring in his step having belted his first ever title.
Caldwell is much improved and his contribution in the second half of the season rivalled anyone else's.

We need a good solid left back, and most of what's left in the kittty after this Croat is paid for should go towards finding a replacement for Naylor.
