Queen of the South 2-3 Rangers: Boyd clinches Scottish Cup for Rangers

KRIS Boyd was the Hampden hero again as Rangers ended a rollercoaster season on a high note by claiming the Scottish Cup.
The striker set the ball rolling with the opener against Queen of the South, before DaMarcus Beasley put his injury hell firmly behind him with a goal of his own.

Brave Queens hit back through Steve Tosh and captain Jim Thomson but Boyd had the final say when he grabbed the winner to ensure the silverware would be heading back to Ibrox.

Boyd also played a crucial role in the CIS Insurance Cup triumph back in March, twice hauling Rangers back into the game before netting the decisive penalty in a shoot-out against Dundee United, and his double today allowed him to take his tally to 25 for the season.

Rangers finally appeared to have run out of legs in the last 10 days of the season, losing the UEFA Cup final to Zenit St Petersburg and then the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title to Celtic on Thursday night.

In contrast, this was Queens' first game since finishing fourth in the Irn-Bru First Division 28 days ago – and a whopping 42 days since their dramatic 4-3 win over Aberdeen in the semi-finals.

Rangers manager Walter Smith needed one final push from his players in their 68th, and final, game of what had been an exhausting campaign and they obliged to salvage a cup double from what has truly been a remarkable season.

Smith made four changes from the side who lost to Aberdeen midweek and the most notable of those was the inclusion of Beasley, the USA international making his first start since sustaining knee ligament damage in a Champions League game back in November.

Sasa Papac was also named in the starting XI after recovering from a thigh strain, as were Boyd and Lee McCulloch. Christian Dailly and Steven Davis were named among the substitutes, while Daniel Cousin and Charlie Adam were both dropped from the squad altogether for the clash at Hampden.

Queens looked the more dangerous team going forward early on, with Stephen Dobbie and Sean O'Connor causing problems for the SPL runners-up. Tosh also tried his luck but his long-ranger was comfortably held by Neil Alexander in the Rangers goal.

At the other end, a long, low shot from Kevin Thomson flashed wide of Jamie MacDonald's left-hand post before Rangers really began to impose themselves on the match.

Boyd released Beasley into the box and he looked set to leave the net bulging only to rifle into the side-netting instead.

The roles were then reversed when Boyd met a Beasley cross eight yards out only to nod just over when it looked so much easier to score.

The breakthrough came after 32 minutes. Tosh gave away a free-kick for a foul on Beasley 25 yards out and Barry Ferguson played the ball short to Boyd to lash into the top right corner of the net.

Queen of the South then failed in their attempts to win a penalty after claiming Steven Whittaker had barged O'Connor off the ball but those pleas fell on deaf ears.

Rangers doubled their advantage instead three minutes before the break when Carlos Cuellar's header was missed by Thomson and Ryan McCann and broke kindly to Beasley to slide home from eight yards.

Just when Rangers must have thought their names were on the trophy, Gordon Chisholm's men pulled a goal back four minutes after the restart.

O'Connor skipped past Cuellar before cutting back into the path of Tosh to bundle home from the edge of the six-yard box and provide hope of a dramatic fightback.

That proved to be the case when the battling Dumfries club hauled themselves level with 53 minutes gone.

A Papac foul on McCann proved costly when Robert Harris punted the resultant free-kick into the box and skipper Thomson was on hand to direct a header past Alexander.

Rangers could have restored their lead when Jean-Claude Darcheville released Beasley and he laid off a pass to the feet of Ferguson but the skipper fired straight into the keeper's arms.

It was left to Boyd to come to the rescue and he rose above everyone else in the box to meet Beasley's corner and send a header looping over the Queens goalkeeper after 71 minutes.

The striker could have then added to his tally for the day but, this time, his header was held by MacDonald after Thomson had delivered a teasing ball from the right.

In the end, Boyd's brace proved to be just enough to allow Rangers to finish the season with a cup double.

A brave try from QOS but Rangers made it hard for themselves by passing up some great chances to score.

Deserved victory in the end despite a dodgy 15 minutes at the start of the second half.

Rearrangers have two trophies in their cabinet and they have "won" neither on a level playind field.

Both trophies now sitting in the Ibrox trophy room have the stench of "cheats-wear" humming from each of them.
And the most worrying aspect of that was that neither The Very Reverend The Mike nor his brother in arms Kenny "CIS" Clark were in charge of the whistle.

Its an continuing utter disgrace.

As monumental as celtic in 2003,or are you belittling that run to the final also.

There is no rule that states you are not allowed to win on away goals or by penalties so what have Rangers done wrong there.Did Celtic not win a tie on away goals in 2003.

As for the league I have long argued we should have asked for nothing and just got on with it while in the CIS cup we got a lucky break with one decision, hardly unprecedented in OF history.

The Scottish cup was won by beating the teams drawn out of the hat and thats all you can do.

All in all a decent season which may have been better had we not lacked that little spark of creativity in important games.

There are plenty of footballing criticisms you can aim at rangers without it degenerating into a rant so why not try it.

Most of the Ranger's squad had to be physically knackered! I know they don't work 12 hour shifts 5 days a week but, running 7-9 miles per game with the shedule they had, that's a marathon, or close to, per week.

Sad, sad people #6 & #7 with their nasty comments.
RFC had a very good season winning two trophies and coming close to winning two more. They did not deserve to win the UEFA cup with that appalling defensive display and there are probably many reasons why they did not win the league, too many games in too short a time being the main one. It seems to have been forgotten that although RFC did ask for a game to be postponed because of a European cup tie, there was another postponement before the Scotland v Italy Game and if I remember correctly two, including one at Celtic, were postponed after the tragic death of Phil O'Donnell. Full marks to Celtic who won their last 7 games and put all the pressure on Rangers. We can all look at WS's team selections and make our own choices but the pure physical and mental effort of playing so many high-pressure games in such a short space of time was too much for them. It is not easy to do and I speak as one who has been involved in sport at the highest level. We did have a very good season and were very, very close to a great one. I enjoyed all the ups, downs and frustrations, that's what makes being a supporter fun.
On another subject entirely, being exiled in London, the best thing about England not being in Euro 08 is the lack of jingoism with weeks of why England are going to win, a wailing and gnashing of teeth (not mine) when they do not, and weeks of post mortems.
Summer off then back into the fray chaps!

Cant agree. Levein said definitely no penalty as did Willie Miller on internet. Hardly Rangers biggest fans.
It was one of those where defenders say no penalty and attackers say the opposite.

Tim,

Point taken but I did think you beat Celta Vigo on away goals. I also reckon Rangers v Fiorentina was the onlt tie outside the final where we didnt score.

It may not have been as exciting as I would have liked but I would have taken it. One point I did find funny about the Italians bemoaning Rangers lack of goal threat was that Rangers apparently replaced Fiorentina as the team with the worst goal per game ratio to reach the final. A record they held for 47 years I believe.

Rangers season, with the players they had available, has been tremendous.
All games were won within the laws of the game, no matter what Pubes has to say about that.

We hoped to be respectable this year, and instead won the CIS Cup, the Scottish Cup, were finalists in the UEFA Cup and finished 2nd, three points behind the heavily favoured Celtic.

Yesterday, I posted my congratulations to Celtic, told their fans to enjoy the party, and reminded them to try to be good winners.
I see that advice has been ignored.

The next season has yet to begin, never mind this summers player investment and once again the MOPEs have us relegated and "them" winning it by October. Two domestic cups, the league goes to the last game of the season and we reach the final of the Uefa cup in Walters first full season back. All this without a LB and half a season withot a RB. What a diddy you are dHimmy!
What "true bluechippers" are coming,to the Pee-tics, this summer dHimy? After the Xmas rescue splurge RAt-ic will be lucky to break even this season. So even with the CL yous are going furthr into debt next season. Whos going to take Bobo, Fatti,Muka,Lithium or Gravestone (Ohmygoodgawd!)?
Rangers will have Hemdani, Cousin (swap for Davis) and Buffel off the books to release wages and min £20m to spend and their debt wiped out.
With inTIMidated refs in you back pocket since Xmas yous just manged to win the SPL on the last day of he season and say it was a triumph, yous posted £20m+ profit last season and Rangers were in turmoil.

Must congratulate the QotS for making it an entertaining final, as far as the Gers players at the end of the match not showing a lot of emotion, I think they are just shattered and happy a long season is over. They played 16 more matches than any one else in the SPL with a tough go the last 2 weeks with the amount of matches played.

Apart from people in Dumfries who were delighted to be there, the atmosphere was as flat as a pancake.

You only had to look at "Walter" acclaiming the cup to the crowd that he telt tae shut it only a couple of months ago.
He hoisted it with one arm,he could hardly be bothered, and struggled to get it above his head.

Craig Leveins comments are likely to have a looooooong lasting effect on "Walter".

Nice try. 6 weeks ago WaGS was in danger of being lynched such were the MOPEs misery with the Senior green. You go on about away records in the SPL, do you want to discuss yor own mHobs CL away record? Went into the last 16 of the CL by default and humiliation by Barca. 9 points were lost by RAt-ic when BoRat almost singe handedly sabotaged your season as he worked his ticket and yet Rangers struggled like hell as soon as McGregor went off the park and out of the season at Parkyerheid. Then we had a dismal away record. Next season Rangers will be much stronger with a new RB and LB, a matching partner for Carlos in CB, a Gazza for midfield and a Hately type for our target man. Then there will be no 97m inTIMidated ref inspired winners to salavge your season.

Rangers won 18/19 home ties in the SPL, RATic only won 14/19. I know what record id prefer. Rangers finished the season 3 points behind Pee-tics having been 7 points ahead with a game in hand only six weeks ago. It was at this time fatigue played its part and we fell back. Remember MONs £70m allstars won NOTHING in the same situation. Wattie won twice, this season (our first for two years) on a £8m net first throw of the dice.

Some of the Rangers supporters have described this as a fitting end to a great season. It was in fact a season when:

(a) millions of television viwers heard their supporters spewing out their anti-catholic bile in the game against Zenit, and

(b) cowardly rioting was the order of the day after being thrashed by Zenit.

Sadly, for thousands of Rangers supporters, that does constitute a great season.

Daillyman,

Lets talk reality and put the season into perspective.

RFC supporters were hopeful of improved results this season with the chance of silverware if things went well.

We lost the league by 3 points.
We won the League Cup
We won the Scottish Cup
We were beat in the UEFA Cup final

With the tic having dominated the SPL the previous 2 seasons we have closed the gap.

Yes there were decisions by officials that helped our cause, much the same as some of the dodgy decisions that went Celtics way and helped secure league points.

At the start of the season the tic were going to have the league wrapped up by Oct, Nov, Dec, then by the end of January according to posters on these threads, it went to the last day.

You made it to the last 16 of the CL, beating Milan with a goal in the last 2 minutes. And Benfica winning away in Russia.

You were knocked out of the Scottish and League Cups at home.

Tic supporters moaned about injuries to there back 4, RFC played with out fullbacks since the Hutton transfer.

Rangers are far from the finished article we supporters know this, as far as the tic are concerned they are in the same position. The tic have won the league but have not done as well as they did in the last 2 seasons, lack of silverware bares this out. We have gone from winning nothing to 3 cup finals and winning 2 of them, an improvement on last season.

Enjoy the off season

How come WaGS won twice in a row as MOY when Gretna gained succesive promotions through every league to the SPL and were not even mentioned.

Typical for you the "Queen of Corruption" to be blind to it when it suits your mHanks.

Rangers should return their voting slips, publicly, next season and therefore as the "establishment" club and domestic treble winners the SPFA awards will be a farce and worthless.

Against the top 6 teams in the spl, Rangers won the grand total of ONE during the season.

Suggestions that mcurry is an honest, trustworthy man, that his numerous bizarre decisions which all favour the same Scottish club, indeed his boyhood heroes, were all honest mistakes, can now be safely dismissed.

Dundee United should now press ahead with legal action. Their allegations challenge mcurry's integrity , and his whole character comes into that equation.

Laptop meejaloyalists were calling on mcurry to sue levein for defamation...you can put the mortgage on it that mikey won't be going anywhere near a court to have his honesty and integrity scrutinised...not unless he is dragged into one, kicking and screaming by Dundee United, with the sfa bluenoses looking on anxiously.

Queens had TWO very decent penalty claims turned down...the first one (whittaker) was a clear barge from the back, there WAS contact and the player was rising to meet the ball. Compared to the last minute penalty awarded against us at tynecastle, it was a stonewaller.

The second claim (Cuellar) was the stronger claim...a clear kick as the queens player tried to tee up a shot at goal.

Rangers played almost half a season more football than all the other teams in Scotland this season, which is testament to their improved form under WS.
All the teams in Europe enter 4 competitions per season, and all you can do is give yourself a chance in as many as possible.
In the league, Rangers gave them self a chance right up to the last game.
In the Leauge cup, Rangers gave themselves a chance right up to the last game.
In the Scottish cup, Rangers gave themselves a chance right up to the last game.
In Europe, Rangers gave themselves a chance right up to the last game.
How many teams do that sh!t? Well done WS, you have shown your intent in your first season.

A couple of dodgy decisions by referee's during Celtic run in helped in their final points total.

But I am sure you missed those. Just trying to keep an open fair forum, clubs will benefit from poor decisions from officials it happens during a season.

If McCurry is found to have been a cheat, he should be punished to the full extent of the law. But I ask you what has it got to do with RFC.

And if Beasley and Boyd had put their chances away in the first half, it would have been all over at 4-0.

IF, IF, IF,

final score 3-2 Gers, cup winners.

70,

Daillyman,

You are grasping at straws. They finished very badly and there is not as much to build on as you would like to believe. Weir and Dailly will be gone next season and Cuellar may well be poached by the EPL. WS himself looked tired and disenchanted at the end and will be wondering if all the abuse is worth the candle.

Rangers FC does not look like a team on the verge of greater things and look more like a team that has achieved its high tide mark. And as for getting away from its thuggish past off the field, the least said the better.

I think you must be talking about three decisions, all in seperate matches....not 5 in the same half.

1. The goal chopped off in the Aberdeen game...we had two goals chopped off in the same match. The first one looked off-side , but it was marginal. Quite honestly, there was nothing wrong with the second goal and why Brines made a statement only about the Aberdeen 'goal' remains a mystery.

2. McDonald's first goal against Rangers...By now, I have watched that goal countless times...sometimes I think he's a ba'hair onside, other times the other way around. It was an inch one way or the other, and the rules do state that if indoubt the attacking team is to be given the benefit of the doubt. The myth that he was clearly 100% offside has been cultivated by the media.

3. The corner kick at motherwell... motherwell were also incorrectly awarded a corner in the same match. We converted ours, they didn't theirs.

If I were to give you the decisions that went AGAINST Celtic, I'd be here all night.

Are you for real.

Let us be absloutely honest here, REALLY honest.

Imagine at the beginning of the season someone saying, Rangers will play to become champions in the last game of EVERY tournament this season.
You would have laughed yer head off, because there was NO WAY, Walter Smith was going to get anywhere near Celtic, he was NEVER going to win both domestic cups, and as far as Europe was concerned, well forget it...
So whilst you say he looks tired, I say he looks exhausted. But he is also one season ahead of where he thought he would be at this stage. Weir and Dailly were bought as quick fix solutions, he now has money to spend to fill those positions, and you know he will.
What is it now, 52 - 42?
88

Daillyman,

Playing 68 matches this season certainly played a part in the tiredness.

Why am I grasping at straws?

Weir and Daily will leave, we can find another centre half, we could always play Papac there it is his natural position. We will have a fit left back in young Smith for the coming season.

There will be players brought in by WS in the close season. Going by the signings made by WS this season and the job they did for the team we will be fine come the start of the season.

How do you think Celtic will react if offers of more than 10mil a piece come in for Boruc or McGeady.

Whats it got to do with Rearrangers you ask.

For a start they dont win the Corruption Is Successful.

Just how much "to do" with Rearrangers do you want it to get.

It's a question of degree.

All clubs benefit from refereeing mistakes at one time or another.

But in Scotland, this is more true of one club than any other.

I am being serious, there is NO WAY that this Rangers side should have come anywhere close to Celtic this season, and that is without the additonal 16 games(or half a season more games) You know that and so do I!
How can any team who are nowhere near their top potential get to the last game of EVERY competition they enter? I mean cmon, who does that SH!T?

Go ask an Aberdeen supporter that question.

I have told you that in my opinion, on occasion RFC do get the benefit of the doubt from referee's,, and so does Celtic.

This really is a futile debate which will turn into a "he said she said" forum listing all dodgy decisions from the past season, and may I add not to many of them being objective.

Should the Gers qualify for the group stages, would their seeding be higher than Celtic due to being UEFA Cup finalists. Just curious

BEMUSED EXILE,

The season's over lads.

Celtic have won the SPL because they were the most consistent team in that particular competition over the 38 games. They also performed well to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League. For both of these achievements, I congratulate them.

Rangers have won both the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup, as well as coming very close in both the SPL and the UEFA Cup. For these achievements I congratulate them.

Luck has played a part, as it always does. Both sides have suffered injuries, both have benefitted from questionable decisions, and equally both have suffered from similarly dubious decisions.

It is yet another season where the two teams are closely enough matched to make both sets of supporters believe that their side is superior, much like 2003 and 2005, and I personally think that there is next to nothing separating the sides.

So, I look forward to the opening of the transfer window, and the reshaping of both sides in preparation for battle again next season, which I predict will be another close one.

Compelling game, this football.
