IT has been a week-long spat that has cast Scottish golf in the worst possible light.
And now, in an almost inevitable conclusion, Colin Montgomerie yesterday blamed his public spat with Sandy Lyle for his poor performance at the 138th Open championship at Turnberry.

Montgomerie, 46, shot rounds of 71 and 74 to stand at five-over a
nd was last night in danger of missing the cut.

Asked if Lyle's remarks had affected him, Montgomerie said: "Very much so."

Montgomerie, the European Ryder Cup team captain for the 2010 event, also appears to have put an end to any hopes Lyle may have had of becoming his vice-captain at Celtic Manor in Wales.

He said: "I thought it was amusing this morning – and this is the last thing I want to say on the matter – that he hopes (the row] doesn't jeopardise his vice-captaincy position," said Montgomerie.

"I thought that was very funny."

The row began shortly before the Open when Lyle was asked whether quitting last year's tournament after ten holes because of bad weather could have jeopardised his chances of becoming Ryder Cup captain.

In response, Lyle drew attention to an incident involving Montgomerie at the Indonesian Open in Jakarta in 2005 when he incorrectly replaced his ball after a weather delay, calling it "a form of cheating".

"I was asked about jeopardising the captaincy of the Ryder Cup by walking off the course and I said Monty was not exactly squeaky clean and he has had his troubles as well," he said.

"I don't really regret saying it. It was light-hearted, it was not a full-out blast at Colin.

"We are actually quite good buddies, we are not enemies."

Having confessed that he kept stirring the pot inadvertently, Lyle was asked why he persisted in making comments on a subject best served by the diplomacy of silence.

"I feel sorry for Colin in some ways really because I don't want to keep stirring the pot," he said.

"But I keep opening my mouth and making back page (headlines].

"Now I think we have to call an end to it and it will be dealt with behind the scenes."

He added: "Through managers we will make some contact but his (Montgomerie's] mobile number might be hard to get right now and even if I ring I'm not sure he will answer it.

"I have to know what he is feeling like.

"I would think he will be well and truly fuelled after the headlines this morning.

"But I think we've seen enough and we need to get on and play golf."

However, having made attempts to build bridges, he then undermined his apology by refusing to back down on his "drama queen" jibe.

"I think a lot of us know he's an emotional person and gets a bit hot under the collar," he said.

"So comments like this in the papers don't help. But he'll get over it.

"He's a big enough boy."

Despite the past week's exchanges, Lyle has said he still held out hope of being involved behind the scenes, prompting the withering sarcasm from Montgomerie.

However, Lyle's performance during the tournament also failed to set the heather alight, coming in eight over par.

He dismissed claims that this had been his worst week at the British Open since his first one back in 1974, but acknowledged that this week "has been a hassle".

"I've always liked to say what I feel but I won't stir it any more.

"It has been done now and we have to face the music.

"I'll get on with my game, he'll get on with his and it will all be forgotten in a couple of months' time."

Note to Monty and Sandy after they retire from golf:-

Do not under any circumstances consider a diplomatic career.

A convenient excuse for Montgomerie's poor performance.

I used to admire Lyall as a great sportsman and dignified person but never as anyone who stepped off onto the front foot to lead the way forward by example or grit. He was never going to be a Ryder Cup captain regardless - he's not in touch with todays' players and he walks off courses because the next tournament was more important. (He shouldn't have started and let the first reserve have a day or two of glory). Now he's totally blown it im my humble opinion. Go home and shut the door you sad person. At least Monty is dignified enough NOT to get drawn into a battle of words in the press, there's more important things to do, like play the Open. You expect him to phone you!! Get real, he removed your number before you removed his lol!!!!

Earlier in the week I posted on here how disappointed I was as someone who has been a Sandy Lyle fan for over 30 years, with the comments he made about Montgomery.

I stand by the opinion that Sandy was wrong, but this little snippet reflects no credit on Montgomerie. Colin needs to perhaps reflect on his continually poor record in The Open and look at himeslf as to why he failed to make the cut rather than blame it on a convenient excuse. I first saw Montgomerie in action when he was an amateur player and TBH even at a younger age he was a bit aloof and snippy with folk.

Both players are in the wrong this week and that is a great pity as they are easily the greatest Scottish players of my lifetime

6... "Go home and shut the door you sad person" maybe you lead by example...

"he walks off courses"... when was the second time?

Lyall? we're all talking about Sandy Lyle... are you?

How do you know anything about his contact with the current players? Monty is the aloof one after all..

why lets facts get in the way of a good type eh..

This little spat is a micrcosm of Scotland - mired in parochialism whilst our status at in the international community declines. These guys should be setting examples istead of picking holes in each other. Shame on both of them.

golf - football - rugby - politics - any more?

Montgomery - What a jessie!

"Asked if Lyle's remarks had affected him, Montgomerie said: "Very much so."

come on- the whole point is that as a professional golfer picking up millions a year you can deal with pressure and Sandy Lyle's comments do not amount to much.

Let's face it Colin you just failed to perform! If you cannot manage your mood due to background noise in your head, give up, get a proper job and knock a ball about at the weekend.

You are an sad fellow who seems to have a habit of blaming others for failures.

Colin Montgomery should not be the Ryder Cup captain, he does not have the character nor mental strength of a Sam Torrance. Do the decent thing and retire.

No 12 Rock Lobster

"Montgomerie, 46, shot rounds of 71 and 74 to stand at five-over
and was last night in danger of missing the cut. "

Asked if Lyle's remarks had affected him, Montgomerie said: "Very much so."

Surely the question was about his poor performance and he was reflecting back that Sandy's comments effected him?

To defend Montgomery when his mental strength is the common underlying reason that he has failed to fulfill his potential is misguided and epitomises a style of reasoning that tends towards mediocrity.

The alignment with Sandy's comments and Colin performance is inescapable.

Lyle was bang out of order but Monty`s excuses for another poor open are ridiculous.A very good golfer but as far as majors are concerned not so.He`ll look back at a career of a couple of missed chances but his Open record is very poor

18, yes indeed.

This was inevitable, after all the cameraman, child, spectator, leaf falling, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all, have had there day, so it was time for something new to blame, no doubt he will carry this on through future tournaments, he makes me ashamed to be a Scot, and always has.

Behaviour of both has been embarrassing for Scotland. Contrast with Tiger - "no excuses" or Tom.

Monty should resign from Ryder Cup captaincy now and avoid another year of pressure that he can't cope with.

Lyle should also keep it shut.

Where is Monty at Turnberry? I didn't see his name anywhere. Is he so crep that he is not in the top 100?

#23. Spot on. Tiger is a gentleman and Tom Watson an educated philosopher when compared to Colin Mumpgomery. What part of Scotland does Mumpy claim to come from anyway - anybody know?

Colin Montgomery and Sandy Lyle play for themselves not for anyone else. They don't embarrass Scotland or Scots - they embarrass themselves.
