As the supporters see it...
ABERDEEN

SO, WE enter the business end of the season and the manufactured excitement of the post-split battle royale. For Calderwood and Aberdeen, every remaining game is the proverbial six-pointer with European qualification esse
ntial for JC to calm the troubled waters he's had to navigate in recent weeks. Jimmy's record against our top-six opponents is a cause for concern, he's only won 12 points out of a potential 45 so far this season. He'll need performances from his big guns, especially those looking for lucrative new contracts. That's a mantra repeated time and again at this point in the season. It's all to play for and it's still possible for a disappointing season to be salvaged but as all Dons fans are so regularly reminded, it's the hope that kills you.

CELTIC

SCOTT Brown showed on Saturday why he will be sorely missed for the next couple of games. He was tenacious in the tackle and provided the driving force from a lacklustre midfield.

About the only thing that Dougie McDonald got right on Saturday was the Skippy incident. I thought he handled it well and Skippy did himself no favours with his Mahe-esque response to a bad tackle. The last thing we need is players suspended at this time of the season.

Still, it was a good win against a stuffy Aberdeen side. A repeat of this scoreline in two weeks would suit me. The league split really grinds my gears. I have never seen the point of it. Every year it leads to accusations of gerry-mandering and incompetence. Plus, revenue lost for some bottom six clubs due to missing two home games against Celtic and Rangers.

David Devine

DUNDEE UNITED

WITH Killie's fight for SPL safety and our aspirations for Europe, one might've been forgiven for expecting a fire and fury encounter at Tannadice but nothing could've been further from the reality. Not the kind of performance that will have Hearts sweating over their third spot.

The major cause of frustration at Tannadice this week is the SPL's fundamental stupidity in scheduling United's important home tie against Aberdeen on the same day as an immovable final game up the road on the 'dark side' of Tannadice Street. It just shows the scant regard they have for any clubs outwith their Old Firm cash cows. Respect to Stephen Thompson for speaking out and highlighting how the SPL's intransigence with accommodating United conflicts sharply with their eagerness to oblige others.

Hamish Mackintosh

FALKIRK

IT WAS hardly a classic, but Saturday's point against Hearts was welcome, and, with the post-split fixtures now out, we know the extent of the challenge ahead in our fight for SPL survival. Starting with Motherwell at home we have five games to overhaul a four-point deficit.

With 18 points already in the bag from games against fellow bottom six clubs, the Bairns are more than capable of getting the points necessary, but it's going to be tough. The ideal boost to everybody should be this week's Scottish Cup semi-final against Dunfermline. A second trip to Hampden in one season is a record for the club and I am backing the Bairns to make it a hat-trick. It could be a magical end to a tough season – a cup win, a first ever qualification for Europe and an SPL future clinched.

HAMILTON ACCIES

ACCIES came close to probable salvation on Saturday as we led through a great goal from James Gibson, but then Inverness's deflected equaliser took the shine off things, meaning we still have some work to do.

At first glance, the post-split fixtures were unkind, with most disappointed that we have to trek up the A9 yet again in just a few weeks' time. But the list is actually pretty good, and we should be able to take points from all our matches. With any luck, the most hazardous game, away to St Mirren, will be merely academic.

Finally, congratulations to Billy Reid for again making the shortlist for manager of the year. He would say that this is an honour for the whole club, but well done to Billy nonetheless. If Accies stay up, it will be an even bigger achievement than winning the league last year.

Gilbert Mowat

HEARTS

INEVITABLY, the SPL fixture computer has provoked the usual post-split complaints. Celtic fans can rest assured that they are not the only ones feeling victimised at us having to visit Ibrox for the third time. The apparent disadvantage that we face highlights the fundamental flaw of the current system.

Then there is the matter of the Thursday night derby. Midweek games are nothing unusual, but it is rather galling to think that we have the inability of Old Firm fans to behave partly to thank for this one. Of course, the split may become a thing of the past if the latest reports of a move south by the Old Firm prove to be true. Until turkeys start voting for Christmas, it isn't going to happen. No doubt it's merely a coincidence that these reports have surfaced at a time when Setanta tries to renegotiate its SPL deal.

Sandy Leonard

HIBERNIAN

SUNDAY saw one of those rare moments when Hibs put in a shift worthy of some praise. No coincidence that this improvement came along with the reinstatement of Sol Bamba into a midfield which saw him win the MOTM award and deservedly so. The return of Bamba to the middle not only helped him but also Rankin and Rosa who played with a lot more freedom.

OK, so Hibs ultimately came up short in what was a fairly exciting game, but the effort and overall performance put in by the Hibees was something to be encouraged by and it's not often we have left ER saying that this season!

Last word on this game is spent on Kris Boyd. What a useless, moaning waste of space that is. How Rangers must be gutted that they couldn't offload him in January.

Eddie Henderson
www.hibs.net

INVERNESS CT

THIS is turning out to be the best SPL relegation battle ever and we are playing our part right to the end. Yet again the home fans were treated to another lacklustre performance full of poor passes, lack of ideas and very poor finishing.

The flow of the game against Hamilton wasn't helped by their continual time-wasting, but we should be professional enough to deal with this.

Their goal came from a free-kick straight from the training ground and they deservedly went in at half-time a goal up. The paint on the home dressing room walls must have peeled off during Terry Butcher's team talk but it only resulted in a slightly better performance in the second half.

It took us until the final few minutes to rescue a valuable point. We are going to struggle to remain in the top flight on this performance.

Dave 'Gringo' Wilson

KILMARNOCK

WE DON'T like making it easy for ourselves at Kilmarnock, but sometimes that is out of our hands. Our hat-trick hero from last week, Kevin Kyle, already scheduled for a suspension for the first game after the split, was a late casualty and never started at Tannadice.

As expected, the goals did not come, but that is not to say we didn't put in a good performance and as well as coming away from a difficult venue with a point, we actually shaded it on the day and could well have taken all three… especially had Willie Collum gone to Specsavers.

As long as the players continue to show this kind of application we should steer clear of the drop, fingers crossed. The Killie Fans For Change open meeting is in the Grand Hall this Thursday night at 7:30pm. All fans welcome.

Barry Richmond
www.killiefc.com

MOTHERWELL

AFTER weeks of hanging on, the agony of this season was finally ended with a dismal performance at home to St Mirren.

Of course for Motherwell it is harsh to say finishing seventh, or at least comfortably in mid-table, is a disappointment. Nonetheless we look at how poor everyone else is, especially from fourth down, and think what might have been. It is questionable how long the city clubs will continue to be within reach of our resources.

At least Mark McGhee will probably be here next season but sadly he is one of the reasons for our relative failure. All too often he has picked a one-off team for one-off games and it fails nearly every time. He may be friends with Sir Alex Ferguson but he needs to stop acting like him if we are to enjoy more success next term!

Derek Wilson
www.firparkcorner.com

RANGERS

ANOTHER tricky away fixture knocked over, courtesy of two out of three exceptional goals scored at Easter Road going to Rangers players. Steven Whittaker doesn't score routine goals and his early goal should have settled Rangers down. In the end, Gers were worthy winners and are now putting together a decent run at the perfect time.

The John Rankin screamer, good strike though it was, showed why having 11 men in our box to defend corners is at best unwise.

Putting quick players upfield to occupy two defenders is tried and tested pub league tactics we should revisit.

Finally, a Player of the Year shortlist not including Rangers central defender Madjid Bougherra is laughable.

Stephen Smith
www.rangerssupporterstrust.co.uk

ST MIRREN

AFTER more than three months, we finally have our first league win of 2009. It couldn't have come at a better time – it's given us a much-needed boost ahead of the split and also means confidence is high ahead of Saturday's trip to Hampden in the Scottish Cup. Results elsewhere now give us a great chance of avoiding the drop.

We didn't look particularly great against Motherwell, but the result was all that mattered. Andy Dorman's goal was a thing of beauty and his current goalscoring form – in terms of quantity and quality – is unbelievable.

Hopefully he has another cracker up his sleeve for Saturday, although a goal off his backside from two yards will do if it turns out to be the winner.

It's hardly surprising that the Celtic fan liked referee Dougie McDonald's decision not to send off Scott McDonald. Scott McDonald was very fortunate indeed (to put it kindly) not to get his marching orders. Hey, they're not related are they? ;0)

As for the split it always produces oddities but it has helped provode interest throughout the league. If the clubs want to get rid of it they can do so.

The split involves the six best teams in the SPL and so none of them should have any fear of playing at any ground and getting points. That is why they are the six best or am I missing something here?

From my point of view it is great to take points from the OF at their grounds. They are normally expected to win at home and therefore if anyone stops that not only are points dropped by the OF but it puts more pressure on them for the next game especially if it is away.

No bring it on I say and this year I would bet that because the OF have been pretty poor overall more twists and turns beckon before we get an outright winner.

Mr Leonard, Hearts Correspondent, it should be the fans of Celtic that you be moaning about following their bad behaviour at Celtic park during the league decider back in 1999. Their behaviour that night was shocking. So please dont forget it. The Sellick PR machine and their mhates in the media have conveniently airbrushed it out of history. Typical isn't it

Boydchenko's simulation tactics are about the worst to have ever disgraced the game. Yon dive he did against Dundee United a year or two ago is now notorious and I'm sure a big brand might use the footage at some point for a television commercial as its comical value is top notch...if boydchenko ever got POTY, there could be a wee pause on the podium as he collects the award, and the master of ceremonies could then tell the audience "let's have a quick look at some moment's from Kris's season...."
The lights are dimmed, the audience is hushed, and on a large screen appears a few clips of boydchenko divin' and actin' it all over the place....with his Dundee U special thrown in furra laugh ev en though it wiz from a previous season.
A few sniggers escape...a giggle...then a coupla laughs...and by the time the lights come back oan, the whole audience is rollin' aboot the deck and big boydchenko takes his trophy 'n' wi' a big riddy, marches striaght oo' the door.

The bhoyz are out in La Manga enjoying the sunshine and training in conditions where the wind isn't blowin' a gail.

Strachan was saying that the winds were so strong durinf training last week that you couldn't hear someone shouting 30 yards away...so it's great that the champions are getting the ideal conditions to work on their shape and strengthen the understanding between the players as we prepare for the last 5 games.

If you asked me would I prefer to be in rangers' position right now, the answer would be yes.
But, I also think that we are a better team than rangers and that we can win all of our 5 remaining games.

Thing is, raninjurz played 4-5-1 most of last season with the midfield sitting quite deep and Cuellar wasn't much tested through the middle to be quite honest. He was good at intercepting crosses into the box from wide areas, could carry the ball forward on occassion (very occassionally).

But his main contribution to rangers last season methinks was kicking/heading the ball clear, and anyone who thinks that is good enough for POTY needs to get their red, white and blue specs surgically removed.

#33, a wee bit of friendly advice: it is better to be thought of as ignorant, than to write something completely inane which proves beyond doubt that you are.

Cuellar has been excellent down here this season, Villa fans love him - and so does your very own St Martin the Perpetually Offended.

Why do you have to be so bitter all the time?

Were you bullied at school?
36

stefano,

Sandy Leonard, the end of season fixtures are a mess because of two reasons: the SPL's incompetence; and the apalling behaviour of TGFITW on 2 May 1999 at the Piggery.

Three pitch invasions by Yahoos, the referee bleeding and dazed from coins thrown at him, the Rangers players showered with coins as they left the pitch, one eejit falling out of the upper stand in a fit of sectarian rage, £68 worth of coins recovered........those are the facts.

36

Ahhhh....but MON plays him as a full back doth he not ?
Like I said, he wasn't much tested as a central defender in Scotland beacuase of the deep-sitting 4-5-1 shape that walter used to horrific effect last season.

MON saw good defensive box work (which I've acknowledged in post 33) and also , an ability to carry the ball forward (again, which I acknowledged at 33) and thought that at £6m it was worth a punt to see if he was any good as a full back.

But the fawning laptop media gave him POTY primarily on the basis that he was very effective at intercepting crosses....he didn't do a helluva lot else for rainjurz. That is off-course a quality which is very important to any team...but there isn't much of a 'wow' factor which I think should be part of he criteria. Last year, McGeady was sensational and some of his tricks and flicks were world class...I think he was a clear winner last season. This season, I don't really see any players in Scotland that reached the standards of Maloney , Nakamura and McGeady when they won POTY. This season, noone has been really special IMHO. Noone has 'wowed' with anything like the consistency that we've come to expect from the last three POTY winners.

The question for Walter Smith is does he risk his first team regulars against Saint Mirren this weekend ?

What if Davis or Bougherra took a knock...the title could be over or as good as in three weeks time, so even a minor injury that takes 2-3 weeks recovery could be very, very costly.

At the same time, defeat to Saint Mirren puts leaves walter facing the wooden spoon should Celtic take the title. That could add to the anxiety as we go into the last 5 games.

Sounds like this is a semi where any manager in walter's position will want to have his cake and eat it. Tough decisions.
Saint Mirren are playing with a bit of confidence at the moment and if rangers field a weakened side , they could well knock them out.

So Mr Henderson, Kris Boyd is a "useless, moaning waste of space". I think his 28 goals, while not even playing in a good few games this year, making him by far Scotland's leading scorer this season, demonstrates just how much you know about football.

As for diving, anyone who say McGeady's dying swan act in the LCF (how wasn't he sent off for simulation - he had already been booked)knows that Boyd doesn't even come close.

The league season has been extended numerous times. Maybe you should get your memory checked. :0)

As for refereeing mistakes you should check all those that Celtic happen to have benefited from this season, especially early in the season. McDonald escaping a red card last Saturday is just the latest. These things happen.

And as for the timing of the next Old Firm game it was not "moved" as it was never set for any other date. Police advice was involved in setting the date. Do you reckon the police are conspiring against poor, wee, persecuted Celtic too? :0)

I think if you asked the tic players they would not say that going to Easter Rd. was that easy.

Both OF sides play the same amount of home and away fixtures by seasons end and the moaning still goes on.

Your team is top of the league, have the best squad according to most tic posters, what have you to fear?

Later.

It's not just the avoidance of a trip to tynecastle...that's only part of the story.

Celtic have been scheduled to play their two most difficult matches immediately after the split. It will be more difficult for the team that drops points during the first two or three games...once a gap opens up , the team with its nose in front will gather momentum, whilst a bit of doubt could start to creep into the minds of the other team....I'd rather the first two games were us at home to Hearts and Dundee United whilst Rangers were away to the same two. That's roughly the eqivalent of what we are faced with in the opening salvo whilst rangers enjoy home advantage in both.

On top of that, one of Celtic's two home ties has been scheduled for midweek. Many thousands of Celtic fans travel from all over the uk and the island of ireland and midweek matches are very difficult to attend. Rangers have a similar support that comes from all over the UK....all 3 of rangers home matches are scheduled for weekends.

#100 have rangers fans ever invaded a park...have rangers fans ever thrown coins ?/
i have said celtic fans behaviour 10 years ago was deplorable...but should a decade later that still be a reason to avoid an old firm title decider ?/
and if you think it does then my point in post #6 stands...xxx

#103, ask Strathclyde Polis - or perhaps they're part of this grand conspiracy you're all so fond of?

You know, inviolving the Masons, the BBC, the Orange Order, the Girl Guides, the CIA, the Co-Op etc, to stop the bold Celts win the league which is rightfully theirs.

Rangers played 4 games in 8 days last season.

Our first four fixtures this season involved three away ties.

And Rangers have played three away games against the same clubs post-split; something that Sellik never have to date.

But let's not bother with those pesky facts, eh?

#132 I'm intrigued. How many Celtic fans are subject to banning orders?

Where can I obtain this information for all British clubs?

You clearly have the information so please share.

Uneducated: You'er not Findlay Sideburns are you?

'I think', 'I believe'

Doesn't quite cut it in underpinning specific assertions now doees it.

Go to the bottom of the class. Must do better.

I would suggest you wear a pointy hat but you would probably like that.

Invictager, I have no idea what the figures are however I do have an issue with ramdom facts being bandied about by individuals without any substantiation.

That's all. Oh and when you see an open goal you have to shoot. (Unless you are called Van Vossen in which case.....)
