Frail shares fans' frustrations as he admits Hearts need 'characters'

STEPHEN Frail, the interim manager of Hearts, has admitted the current side lacks characters and too many first team players retreated into their shells during the course of a miserable season when the club slumped to eighth place in the SPL.
Unsure what the future holds for himself and whether or not he will have a position on the coaching staff at Tynecastle next season, Frail believes there are too many nice lads on the books at present and the club needs to recruit players with a hard
er edge. Asked if the Hearts' supporters were right to question the attitude of certain players who appear to lack motivation, Frail replied: "I can see where that comes from. That's always been labelled at us because of the nationalities we have and we can only do so much. When they cross the line they'll say, yeah, we're up for it. But whether they are or not is another thing.

"Sometimes things will go against you in games or you don't start games well. And what I said to them is that I felt too many of them have been in their shells throughout the season. You need characters and big players and some of them were happy even when they weren't (taking part] in the game. Even before I took charge very rarely did I see anyone going up and knocking on the manager's door and asking why they weren't playing? You want that, especially when you are going through a bad time. I can understand the frustrations because the supporters are the lifeblood. They are the only constant at any football club and they'll be feeling it more than anyone."

Ever since the departure of Scottish internationalists Steven Pressley, Paul Hartley and Craig Gordon, it's clear Hearts have lacked clear leadership on the pitch. The players rarely seem to encourage one another or complain when standards dip. When things go wrong, the attitude is often one of meek acceptance rather than stern resistance.

"We're a relatively inexperienced team in the SPL and I think we could have done with more characters," admitted Frail. "When the chips are really down and it's backs against the wall, sometimes a manager shouldn't have to say anything. I've got a squad of players who, in my opinion, are as good as anyone outside the Old Firm. But they haven't shown it this season.Yes, we need to add quality to make it better. But they are just nice boys. When something happens in training, it's looked upon as a negative or a rare occurrence.

"It takes people aback when they see someone pointing the finger or grabbing someone and telling them they're not doing it or they're not working hard enough. You need that because after the training session you should be able to have a shower, have a bit of lunch and have a laugh about it.

"We all should have the same goal. But we also need to be on the same path going to that goal. Some of us are on different paths, just outside distractions, and we need them all to be focused. If we had more characters, they would drag the rest through.

"They are nice boys and sometimes you just need a wee bit of nastiness, but in the right way. It's clear to see that is one of the things we lack."

As to Frail's own position, he doesn't know what lies ahead but will continue to work diligently for the club and lay the foundations for a possible successor. "At the minute I have no holiday planned," he said. "It's going to be a long summer and whatever decision is made I'll deal with.

"At the end of the day I am still culpable for things that are going on at the club. I said to the players that every single player and every single member of staff has to take responsibility for what has happened this season. I can only keep preparing for the new season. I can't stop because there are no more games.

"I've not been told if I am going to be the manager or here in any capacity so I need to make sure everything is right. If I am not here and I lose my job I want someone to walk in and see the preparation is right and carry it on."

Bearing in mind that Hearts, according to their last published accounts, spent £12.5 million on wages, the gap between expenditure and achievement over the past couple of seasons has become an embarrassment.

Last month Hearts non-executive director Sergejus Fedotovas appeared to backtrack on a previous commitment to recruiting a British manager for season 2008-09 when he said a skilful candidate would work irrespective of nationality.

"you need a wee bit of nastiness".

Does you a lot of good when Glen gets sent off for displaying it against Gretna.

Mikey Stewart gets sent off for displaying his.

Has Frail finally lost it or can he just not resist getting in Evening news with stupid quotes.

Win the next 6, still best to date.

When is the real manager joining?

Hearts don't nee 'characters'! They need quality players with the desire to produce their best for the team, week in, week out, and they need a corporate/mgmt structure that supports them & provides the wherewithall to get the quality players to start with! No more, no less

I read that Zenit cost £20m to put together. The inadequate Moronov has spent £10m to achieve defeat by Gretna.

""I've got a squad of players who, in my opinion, are as good as anyone outside the Old Firm""

I'm fed up hearing this. I'll agree that with your waged budget you SHOULD have the best squad outside the OF.

Tell me, does any Hearts supporter agree with Frail's above assessment?

In the main, you will find that players of genuine quality are, "characters".
They want to win things, they don't like losing.
I have watched Hearts players troop of in many of the games we have lost this season and last, who didn't seem to be bothered at all.
As I've said, over and over again, "IT COMES DOWN".
Shaggy is NOT a leader, NOT a tactician and has NOT got an eye for a player.
NEW MANAGER please Mr Romanov, not a clown like Korobotchup, not a disaster as was Mentalheid, and not a hero, like the sex offender.
Shaggy did his best, but he is not competent enough to manage a first team in this division.
The lack of judgement by Vlad in appointing all of the above is mind bending.

'£20 million is unaccounted for'

'Missing transfer fees?'

Are you claiming that Romanov/Ukio are corrupt?

Are you claiming that transfer fees are being misappropriated?

If so you are on very dangerous ground. You are making allegations of corruption that you cannot substantiate.

Frail this....Frail that.....when he took over we were 11th and 9 points clear of Gretna. We were in danger of going down.

Not saying he is Mourinho but i'm saying he deserves respect.

Any problems with his squad should be directed at the idiot who sold Velicka and Pospisil, let Makela leave, ostracised Bednar.

Any problems with discipline can be aimed at a number of folk - of which Frail was one - but I get the impression from talking to folk more 'in the know' than me that Korobochka is the real problem in the dressing room.

What guarantees do we have that the next manager will have more control? None.

What guarantees do we have that the next manager will be able to identify, and buy, his own players? None.

What guarantees do we have that we will not see another plane load of Liths? None.

What guarantees do we have that players will no longer be dropped because they have not signed a new contract? None.

Until we have the above points written in stone then the performances since New Year are as good as we're gonna get.

Mcghee's 15m war chest............LOL!!!!

It's not exactlty a revalation is it? Why are characters who are quality players who hate to lose like Webster, Pressley, Hartley, Brellier, Bednar and Pospsil no longer at the club? Because they can't stand the Romanov regime and being treated like pawns in his game. The vastly inferior squad that has been assembled are just what Romanov wants - annoymous nobodies who wouldn't say boo to a goose and will do exactly what they are told like good boys. It's all going exactly to Romanov's plan. All the enemies within and traitors have gone and it's onwards and, er, downwards all the way.

This is the same squad that got beat on Tues by GRETNA, Fail should remain manager at The PBS as it will keep one half of Edinburgh happy. Never mind next season HMFC will have their super-duper new stand, Mark Mcghee at the helm, multi million pound world cup players, Champion's League final etc

Steve Frail said "blah blah blah, the players aren't good enough and I can't motivate them". No sh!t Sherlock. Took you 5 months to figure that one out did it?
Look, the season's over, are we going to have to put up with this rubbish every day?
For future reference, we know or assume the following things:
- The players aren't good enough
- The players don't care
- There's still a discipline problem
- Vlads still interfering in team selection
- SF will be manager next season
- No new players of note will come in
- The following players will be sold: Kingston, Berra, Driver
If and when any of these change feel free to update us. Until then: Shhhhhh!

As usual we have a bunch of Hibbies droning on about Hearts. Does nothing of interest happen at ER or is it because Hearts are the big club that they find us so inetersting.
Yes Hearts had a bad season and Frail is stating the obvious but we'll soon be back challenging for the top 3. Something that Hibs can only dream about.

If Frail has any self resepect he'll quit. Who would want to work under those circumstances anyway? He has an inferior squad with no say in who is sold or signed, no backroom staff and he reports to a fax machine. Time to go while he can still get a coaching job in the lower leagues or with an SPL youth team. The longer he stays the less credibility he will have in the long run.
20

GrahamL,

15/05/2008 09:31:59
#23 If Frail has any self respect he won't take the managers job. If Frail's happy to spend his career as a coach, I see no reason for him to leave the club. He's a coach, acting as manager until - supposedly - a new one is found. If he's happy to go back to coaching under the new guy then fair play to him.
Noone with self respect would be the manager at Hearts unless Vlad agreed to stop meddling. SF included.

Johnny Jambo,

Character is what we need, lets sign up the contestants from Britains got Talent, they have a lot of it, what a load of nonsense, we need a Board of Directors who know how to run a legitame business, we need a coah and coaching staff who have knowledge of the game and allowed to run the playing side and we need a load of players who have some Quality, Grit, determination and a passion for the jersey, until we get that we will have al the excuses under the sun and still slip further away from what we were promised.

I can put up with the team being poor, lets face it we have been there many times before andstuck with it, but I cannot put up with us being the butt of every other team in Britains Jokes.

I agree with you on this one. All the 'characters' showed their character by not taking the rubbish from Romanov. They knew the 'managers' were not picking the team and they either spoke out (Pressley, Hartley, Gordon) or engineered a move (Bednar) or ran down their contracts (Tall, Brellier, Fyssas).

As a consequence we are left with kids and players on too good contracts in comparrison to their skill to make a fuss. In other words players without the 'character' to really care about what is happening to Hearts.

I used think people were mad when they suggested Jim Jeffries as our new manager. I now think he is precisely the sort of character needed to sift through the rubbish at Tynecastle.

He would clear out the guys who are not performing to the standard that wages suggests they should and he would make sure Hearts gets its money's worth from our players and he would get rid of the folk masquerading as Hearts players. At this point i don't think we can ask for anything else.

Of course this is just a stupid comment as there is no way Romanov will let someone like JJ control the playing squad at Hearts.
23

Who?,

15/05/2008 09:52:51
The problem for hearts is that vlad and his merry band of muppets gave too many average player long term lucrative contracts. Under managers such as levein young players were on 1-2 year contracts which kept them hungry. Ok some players who were decent left for minimal money but others who failed to make the grade were shipped out when they were found out.

Who in their right mind is going to match the salary of mole, miko, elliot, goncalves, stewart, pinilla, etc? The only was to bin them is to payup their contracts which would affect the remaining player budget.

Before vlad took over hearts were run by a bufoon but they had reasonably good people running the football side. Now we have a neurotic dictator (little stalin) who really doesn't have a clue and the football side is run by two annonamous sports directors who are not accountable for their actions.

No football manager who has genuine alternatives will touch hearts with the senior management structure that is currently in place. No player with a decent alternative is going to sign for a club who refuse to appoint a football manager with full control. I've not renewed my season ticket and those who have need their heads read!

Gorgie Forever,

Frail has done a solid job and steadied the ship after an absolutely terrible start to this season so he does deserve some credit for that.

I think he has so much flak directed at him because he is always in the press stating the obvious and churning out nothing stories, we are pretty bored at the moment and its the same p*sh repeated again and again.

I think he is a good coach but tactically naive at the moment and still has lots to learn. Yes he is being made a scapegoat but maybe he should sit tight instead of talking nonsense in the paper every day. Its not like we need to be told the same thing seven days a week!

25

Johnny Jambo,

15/05/2008 09:59:11
#29, I will agree with you that when Frail took over he did steady the ship but the end of the season has been a disater, albeit they were meaningless matches, they are matches we should be winning and if he cannot motivate the squad to win against the so called poor teams of the SPL when they should be playing for their places and futures, then what chance has he got against the top six.

He must go from the role, although I think there may well be a place for him in the set up.

Fedetovas said there would be a British STYLE manager, as far as I'm aware there's never been a statement that we'de get a British manager (not that nationality counts at all, eh Mr Aitken?)
27

Newcastle Jambo,

15/05/2008 10:15:23
I agree with all the comments above. Atlast everyone agrees what the problems are at Hearts. It's taken a long time and a dramatic fall from October 2005 when these policies were implemented (as soon as Romanov had total control) for everyone to admit to themselves that his running of the club is a disaster. It's not Frail's fault of course.
28

#32 NJ - Unfortunately I think there are still some who "believe". I, as you know have been saying this along with you and a number of other posters for a long time.
There needs to be an organised campaign to get things changed and I think somehow we would need a figurehead for the campaign an explayer who has a great deal of respect and a committee to organise the meetings and get something done about:-
a. getting Romanov out, or
b. getting Romanov to announce his plans, show us what he wants to do, with the evidence, and agree to keep his nose out of the team selection and allow a good manager to get on with the job.

Newcastle and Johnny Jambos, best of luck in your attempts to get your fellow supporters organised and motivated to do something about the farce that is Hearts.

I think too many Jambos are still living in hope that Romanov might turn things round - folks, he won't. He's a b*llshit artist who has consistently lied to the fans - don't make me list all the times this has happened. The now infamous January "we're looking for a British-style manager" statement should say it all. It's clear that they weren't. It doesn't take this long to appoint a manager.

Vlad clearly calculated that he could fob off the fans with New Year's PR release and then let this season drift on as before. And he was right. Doubtless season ticket sales will be down, but it seems not enough to really make a difference.

Frail - Seems a decent coach but no manager.
Most recent example - home against Killie - For most of the season arguably the second worst team in the league and we play a small 18 year old up front ON HIS OWN.
What kind of tactical set up was that ? His whole game plans have have been frail (Yep that was bad) with no contingency for changing style when things are going badly. Our last three games have totally proven that.

Last night was a victory for football not just Zenit.

#34. I think you should list all the times Romanov has lied to the fans, I can think of many times where the media has made up stories, Hearts fans themselves made up their own stories or put their own interpretation on events and times where the media has deliberately mis-quoted statements from Hearts - but lies straight from Romanov?

I have it on very good authority that Hearts were speaking to managerial candidates last week so perhaps you should calm down a bit before you go on spouting garbage.

#33. The Board's plans for the future are stated in the recent interview given by Fedotovas, the interview is available in full on the Hearts website, what more do you want? Romanov to come to your house?

#33 JJ, I agree with you. It needs guys like John Robertson, Gary Mackay, Donald Ford etc to get together to try to find investors to buy Romanov out and to get the fans behind them. That would have been more achievable if one of Romanov's main strategies had not been to massively increase the club's debt to his own private bank.

Unless the next accounnts show that all the Gordon fee and those for Bednar and others together with the drop in the wage bill has lowered the debt to something approaching waht it was 3 years ago, buying himn out will be impossible.

I'd love to think that there could be a respectable international consortium maybe headed by someone like Souness (a Hearts fans as we all know) who are prepared to invest in Scottish football but frankly I can't see it. That's why we ended up with Romanov after all.

Since Burley was sacked for trying to manage the playing side of Hearts football club we have had:

John McGlynn - 4 games. Caretaker manager.
Graham Rix - 19 games. Sacked after telling everyone he was no longer picking the team.
Valdas - 28 games. Then disapeared due to 'stress'.
Malofeev - 6 games. Didn't win any games.
Valdas - 14 games. Disapeared again.
Korobochka - 10 games. To the end of the season
Cervenkov - 23 games. Sacked after losing 5 in a row.
Frail - 21 games.

For practically all this time, 2.5 years, we have been searching for a 'permanent' manager. Only Valdas at the start of last season and Rix after Burley have been sold to us under the pretence of being a 'permanent' manager. We all know this was a pretence.

There is no logical reason to 'believe' that lessons have been learnt and that a proper permanent football manager will be employed.

#37 JT, I can't possibly list all of Vlad's lies here (it would take all day!) but, just for old time's sake, let's start at the beginning, with this quote from Oct 2004:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/h/heart_of_midlothian/3710698.stm

"Russian businessman Vladimir Romanov says Hearts' debt would be cleared by the end of the year if he become the major shareholder.

"I don't think they would have any debt by the end of this year," he said, estimating the current amount owed as £20m."

He promised the fans the League ,we would be in Europe,a new manager , new stand it goes on and on. I am sorry having been a fan for 50 odd years, I am sure we are going further dowm as Romanov has no interest in the well being of the Club. He wants the money for season tickets but put a good team on the field no chance. When he got rid of Burley that was the start. There was a time when I thought he had not identified the fact that we had nobody in the team who were prepared to win the battle before they won the game...this interview shows he did but for one reason or another has waited until now to speak ill of underperforming merceranies. I would like to see Frail kept on in a coaching capacity at least.
