Hibs sign up midfield playmaker

Fabian Yantorno has signed a two-year deal with Hibernian.
The midfielder, 25, has been training with the Easter Road club after being released by Gretna in March.

The Uruguayan impressed for the Borders outfit before being ruled out for the remainder of the season with a long-term knee injury.

Gretna's financial situation meant they could not afford his rehabilitation and Hibs stepped in with a view to signing the player once fit again.

Yantorno trained with the Edinburgh club this summer and featured as a trialist in pre-season games before finally putting pen to paper.
Manager Mixu Paatelainen told www.hibernianfc.co.uk: "Fabian is a technically gifted player with good game awareness.

"He is an exciting footballer and we look forward to Fabian giving his best in the coming weeks as he becomes fully match-fit."

Yantorno is the fourth new arrival of the summer, along with Joe Keenan, Steven Thicot and David van Zanten, ahead of Hibs' Clydesdale Bank Premier League opener at Kilmarnock tomorrow.

I have to admit I think this is a decent signing for Hibs, if they can ge the guy fully fit and keep him that way. Unfortunately too many of Mixu's signings have not been decent and I think they will need more than just Yantorno to boost their hopes ahead of the new season.

Pleased with this signing. Thought he was Gretna's best player whenever I saw them last season. A bit of positive news at last. Lets get this French trialist confirmed too.

It's a good signing for Hibs, though he may take a while to regain the quality he showed last season.

Slowly, the Hibs squad is taking shape - as always it seems a last minute thing with this club. That's 4 new signings this summer, but they are struggling to move on other current players (rumours suggest Benji is off on loan).

Sorry, but 4 is right. Hibs really are a second division-type team. Maybe first division, but certainly lower-level. We signed the lad Murray a couple of years ago, to see if he could make the step up to Ibrox, but he didn't last long. Fair enough the guy tried, but to be honest he embarassed himself in a Rangers jersey. He ended up going back to Hibs, which was more his level, as he was constantly letting the team down over at Ibrox. Useless.

I don't mean to be nasty, but your players are hopeless, and your stadium is a midden. You have done enough to stay in the SPL, but teams like yous and Hamilton just down the level of the League.

I think you will find I know more about Rangers than you think. But me personally I am happy to support my local team. Yes, we may not win much or play in Europe much but they are OUR team. Which means something to people with integrity.

It would be easy to cop out and be a glory hunter like many of the people that leave Edinburgh for Glasgow every week. But nah, not for me ta. Ibrox leavers a bad taste in the mouth even when we come through and beat you. Which is often enough. (and yes, boy did we laugh at these games)

17 - Lenny. I am from Edinburgh too, but support Celtic. Reason for this is my late father supported them, and his father before him. No other reason at all - I was taken when i was small and it is quite easy at that age to be overawed by the crowd etc, and become wrapped up in that particular team.

I just wonder what your thought are re this? Is a family tradition also a case of 'bottling it'?? I would argue that while support for your local team is admirable, it isn't mandatory. There are certainly reasons where other alternatives are perfectly acceptable too. If someone from Glasgow/Fife/Aberdeen moved to Leith and began supporting Hibs, would you lambast them for not following their local team?

Incidentally, I should also say that as a Leith resident I have also been to many many Hibs matches, have a soft spot for them (and their football) and despise h-n bigots like kenny mac, but please.... I know Celtic have a good few bandwagon jumpers, but please don't bracket us in the same group as lowlifes like bluenose.

I may be biased, but I truly believe they are a breed unto themselves.

Big kenny mac, You are obviously not the brightest lad in town but you should really try and read a book or listen to someone who can and let them tell you about the history of Scottish football.
Rangers are not "the "team for unionists it just so happens that some bigoted orangemen have picked them as a team to follow. originaly most teams in Scotland were either aligned to a workplace or for catholic/prodestant people of that area. None of these teams were anything to do with either Scottish Nationalism or Irish Republicanism. Of the three main cities there were two main teams each one for Prodestants and one for Catholics of these only one ever had a sectarian policy and that was Dundee United which was then known as Dundee Hibernian.
It was only really with the resurgance of the troubles in Northern Ireland in the latter half of the 20th century that the main paramilitaries aligned themselves with the Glasgow clubs.
Although None pof the clubs accept this and certainly would not entertain the notion that they were for queen and country or indeed for the Vatican.
So If you are a Prodestant in either Edinburgh, Dundee or the surrounding counties then you should really support either Hearts or Dundee. There are others obvously in the lower leagues but they are the main ones, so yes going from the east to watch rangers IS glory hunting, Just a shame for you that most times Hibs go they beat you.

Well, you do have a point actually. I admit that on this subject I am very hyporcritical in that I would have no issue with Folks moving to Leith and supporting Hibs.

Also agree that there are circumstances such as your own where it is natural you would support Fathers team.

It does just do my nut in the amount of buses from Leith etc going to Glasgow. I'm sure that with you having attended Hibs games and living in Leith you do know where I am coming from.

I will say, that I dont actually have a hatred for Old Firm fans, some of my mates support them. We do have banter about them being glory hunters of course! People like BigKennyMac just bring out the worst in me!

Lenny - I guess a similar analogy would be you moving somewhere else, but still encouraging your son to support Hibs. Again, perfectly normal and natural.

I note you use the phrase 'o-d f--m fans'.... Not a lot I can do about it, but trust me, from a Celtic perspective, we truly despise being bracketed with them. There are many many crucial differences between the two teams, but one in particular is that (a bit like you guys hating hearts) sure, we hate rangers. the big difference is they hate celtic, aberdeen, and then pretty much everyone else too. More and more Tic fans are usng the phrase 'Glasgow Derby' or 'Celtic-rangers match' as we no longer want to be shoved in with the fat bigots. A bit like the tartan army (like 'em or loathe 'em) we have built a reputation for travelling in big numbers and being good natured, and creatin a generally good impression. The sight of these 'old-firm' bigoted lunatics smashing up manchester and running amok like wild pigs with union jacks horrified us like it did anyone else, as we saw the damage done to Scotland's reputation. Please don't blindly bracket all fans of Glasgow teams in the same bin. As I say, Celtic have a good few glory-hunters, but they are generally harmless, and don't normally smash up places like manchester, barcelona, pamplona, tranmere, or sunderland.

Yantorno has talent, and certainly impressed last year. However, I can't help that they would be better adding a really steady keeper, and possibly a wee bit more spine to the team - there is already a good amount of talent and flair, but heavy SPL pitches and abysmal refereeing sometimes mean Hibs lack of 'plan B' can be exposed.

I was at Ibrox last Saturday (and watched the European game mid week) and find it funny that a Rangers fan has the bottle to make comments about another club letting their respective league down......

Well - if you were at Ibrox, you must have at least been impressed. Gers weren't concentrating on the park, and got caught out a couple of times. But the atmosphere was class, and as stadiums go, it is truly Britain's finest.

You say that Hibs are a 1st or second division team, but you lot (Old Firm) buy all the best players from other teams.... 99% of the time they sit in the stands or are injured on their arrival at Murray Park.

You weaken the rest of us to stay at the top. In rangers case just behind Celtic. You are ruining Scottish football and the careers of young lads that are promised the earth.

When these players get to the end of their contracts you let them go back to another scottish club and declare that these players were inept. Will the likes of Thompson, Webster, Whittaker all be called useless next season after helping you get to the UEFA cup final??

I support a team due to a family tradition. Religion has absolutely NOTHING to do with it. There is no problem with that - if that is the case, you can direct your rant at the northern irish bloke who supports liverpool, yourself (as living abroad, hearts are not your local team), and any hearts supporters not from the lothians - I hope you give them all some serious stick. As for your own son - well.... here's hoping he supports the local team wherever you live, and doesn't hope to follow in his dad's somewhat myopic footsteps, eh? I hope you give him dog's abuse if he tries to follow hearts.

People are free to support whatever team they like - it is only a sport after all. Sure, the guy from edinburgh on this site a few weeks ago who supports Barca seemed a bit of a saddo, but should everyone from south Glasgow support rangers? what if they detest bigotry?

Your one eyed viewpoint suits your own little world, but a lot of people have a varied background, different upbringings, take to a certain sport late etc etc. Try your best to think a wee bit before spouting total tripe next time. Otherwise you come across as almost as bigoted as fat Kenny Mac.

Jambo abroad is my User name.... because i am abroad, but you have no idea whether it is a day or 20yrs. It was a recent move and before that i was a regular at Tynie as a kid and as soon as i had a job (as a school leaver) bought my season ticket, so as a regular/season ticket holder for over 20yrs. I am obviously unable to make the games on a Sat, but whenever i am back i take the games in.

I now have a ticket for my new 'Local' Team Cartagena in the Spanish 2b division. Now that is in no way a Glory hunt, as in this country most are diveded by Barca or Real M.

If i was in Edinburgh i would expect my Kid or kids to decide on what team they would want to support. Hopefully between Hearts, Hibs or even Spartans. I remember the day i decided, between Hearts & Hibs... no influence from parents or religion, as thats not really an issue for the Ed teams (except for the east coast bigots... they do exist)I don't care, but why trapse all the way from Ed to Glasgow every weekend. If less of the buses left the lothians to see the Glasgow teams we may all be on an even keel and having a more exciting league than the 2 tier one that exists at the moment.

Before anyone says it. Most league in the world are the same. Look at Spain, England, France and Germany to name a few.

BTO, not all supportive by the sound of things. From the Times:

The images at the end of Rangers' calamity in Lithuania on Tuesday night said everything. As John McClelland, the club director and former chairman, walked away from the scene of his team's 2-1 defeat to FBK Kaunas, a knot of Ibrox fans who were gathered in a stand above him startled McClelland with their invective. For a few seconds it was highly unpleasant.

Walter Smith, the Rangers manager, was also the subject of the travelling fans' wrath, some of whom were openly calling for his head yesterday. Martin Bain, the Rangers chief executive, who attended the game in Kaunas with his young son, also came in for abuse, to the point where his little boy became visibly upset by the scene.

Such human emotions may be excused or not but the football point can't be ignored: it was wretched and humiliating for a club like Rangers to be evicted from the Champions League qualifiers in the way that they were. FBK Kaunas, with all due respect, remain a village shop of the European game, while Rangers, despite not having the wealth of teams in England's Premier League, are a superstore by comparison. For Rangers to lose to such a team can be recorded as one of the club's lowest points of the past 50 years.

The inquests were already under way yesterday, and Smith, a rightly respected manager, was not being spared. The summer surgery the manager has performed on his squad is looking suspect, and his team appears decidedly plodding and workman-like.
