ALTHOUGH THE long wait may be almost over, Hearts' followers have a legitimate fear that what lies ahead could be even more turbulent than what has come before. A new manager should be in place at Tynecastle by next weekend, with the club in the process of speaking to candidates.
Mark McGhee and Vladimir Weiss rejected the chance to take over at Gorgie, Gudjon Thordarson talked himself out of contention without even taking part in an interview, while the likes of Jacques Santini, Billy Davies and Lothar Matthaus always appear
ed outwith Hearts' financial grasp.

Insiders insist there remain at least three realistic contenders to replace Stephen Frail, the caretaker manager who was put on gardening leave last week. German Jürgen Röben is on the short-list but whether the former Borussia Dortmund coach is prepared to work for Vladimir Romanov remains to be seen.

The removal of Frail leaves the club with a coaching staff which makes a skeleton look obese. Anatoly Korobochka, whose role has never been defined, is currently working alongside Tom Ritchie, the fitness coach, and sports scientist Andy Murray in preparing a dispirited playing staff for the new season. Optimism, once the order of the day for supporters of the Romanov Revolution, has gradually seeped away.

The new manager will have to deal with a series of personnel issues. Christophe Berra, Lee Wallace, Andy Driver and Calum Elliot are attracting admiring glances from elsewhere, Christian Nade is absent without leave and Fernando Screpis has returned to Riccarton despite an unwillingness on the club's part to extend the Argentine's contract. New players, desperately needed to supplement an understrength and underachieving squad, will only arrive if the next manager has a more detailed scouting dossier than Hearts have at present. The entire structure at the club, Riccarton itself aside, has been allowed to collapse to a level which would be sneered at in the First Division. In addition, the striking lack of leadership has seen an erosion of discipline.

Romanov's decision to end his association with Charlie Mann, his spokesman of the last four years, is seen by many as tacit admission that there will be little in the way of positive news to emanate from Gorgie in the near future. Hearts insiders contest that Mann's removal was a business decision, aimed at saving Romanov the £60,000 annual retainer paid to PR firm Weber Shandwick. Either way, it is accepted by Mann and Tynecastle employees alike that the owner is more reluctant than ever to listen to alternative opinion from this country. Such a policy remains dangerous. The wrong managerial appointment now would set Hearts back years.

Supporter unrest is starting to foment. Iain MacLeod, a leading member of the Save Our Hearts campaign, warned on Friday that even Romanov's hitherto most staunch backers are teetering towards revolt. MacLeod's comments have foundation; an informal meeting of prominent fans will take place in Edinburgh this afternoon, aimed at gauging opinion on the malaise.

The Hearts support have already proved they have the stomach for a fight when they opposed the Chris Robinson regime. Romanov must now show he has the willingness to avoid one.

I'm interested in knowing more about this afternoons meeting.

I feel helpless and would like to get involved in any exercise that would reflect my displeasure and gauge the strength of feeling.

I thought Screpis signed on a 3.5 year contract - not sure why it would be extended before he's even established himself in the team.

Romanov has been tolerated long enough. It's time for protests and action.

Wonder who wrote this story, sounds as they want Hearts to go to the wall !! as for players leaving then anyone who watched the Heart of Midlothian last season will know we need a clear out, the lot can go for me. We will be ready for the new season, the 'Heart of Midlothianw will be there',

C'mon the Gorgie !!!

In almost every article written by the Scotsman, regarding HMFC, the focus is always on the negative.
Most Hearts supporters are more than frustrated with the time it's taken to actually sign up a NEW MANAGER; However we have offered the job to at least two targets.
As for the "lack of leadership" issue...Shaggy certainly never demonstrated any leadership abilities in my view, so his imminent departure will not make a blind bit of difference on that front.
Supporter Unrest!!!! Geez a break. Supporter Unrest is akin to a permanent lodger, there will always be some kind of "unrest", look at the "unrest" amongst the Ibrox faithfull about Wattie.
I can not believe for one minute that the NEW MANAGER, will fail us as much as Shaggy & co. did last term.
Over to you Vlad.

#8 Scorchio. It was a direct quoted interview saying they had a long meeting. I thought the most telling part was the reason Rober has knocked us back :- "But the trouble was I have my opinions on how to coach and he has his ideas."

So at interviews Romanov is telling candidates he is going to meddle in playing related affairs.

FFS - this is more than ridiculous now, how has this megalomaniac not got the message??????

scorchio,

West of the Pecos 29/06/2008 09:42:14
Vladimir Romanov now knows that his way is delivering nothing but rebbutal and refusal.
Why on earth he would want to see candidate after candidate, walk away is beyond me.
I know there are "ego's", but as a result of Vlads intransigence over these details, HMFC are suffering.
Somethings got to give!

#12. You think he would have understood his methods aren't working when we couldn't even get top of bottom 6. That you would think would have been climax of 18 months of decline.

However, Robers quotes show it still hasn't sunk in?

"In almost every article written by the Scotsman, regarding HMFC, the focus is always on the negative."

What, and just ignoring all the positive news stories that emanate from Tynie?

Encouraging to hear that Calum Elliot is "attracting admiring glances" I'd imagine ( insert own joke here ).

In all seriousness though, the longer this goes on the more likely that Ziggy is going to be installed as new manager.

Who's it gonna be? ,

If this paper was to have written about positive things coming out of Tynecastle it would have been lies.
That is why you will not find any. And probably will not until the protests that some of the more concerned fans are organizing kick in and bring about a change.
Alternatively, you could all just read the paper and find fault with everyone else and complain that the referees/fans/linesmen/ballboys/SFA and SPL are all against you. As usual.

St Mirren , Dundee Utd , FFFHibs , Aberdeen Falkirk - ALL complained about refs last season - Most on more than one ocassion - usually after a game against the ugly sisters.
I take it you think that ref's do not lean towards either side of the old firm. Ask Craig Levein for example.

#18 busby, unfortunately hearts fans are now labeled as serial complainers about match officials and the sfa. everyone else makes the same complaints but sadly complaints about bias and corruption are only deemed to be credible by people when it's their own team on the receiving end. the same seems to also apply to the clubs themselves and will ensure that nothings will change for the better.

most of these bams would scream about old firm bias against their teams and guffaw at hearts for their persistent complaints in the next breath.

*14* I heard that big mixu is looking to take Calum Elliot if Jonnotan Johanson tells him he'd be too embarassed to pull on the Hibs shirt. That would be a great signing for you, he would fit right in at ER, was going to say alongside Fletcher but he'll be off at the first sign of £££'s

The article about Rober - the German who turned Vlad down : ......GERMAN gaffer Jurgen Rober has become the latest coach to snub Hearts - after admitting he feared Vladimir Romanov would interfere in team affairs.

The man who took Hertha Berlin from the Bundesliga's Second Division into the Champions League spent all day Friday in Lithuania meeting the Jambos' owner.

But the 54-year-old - who also had spells in charge of Stuttgart, Partizan Belgrade, Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund - last night revealed he had knocked back the move to Edinburgh.

He's the third boss in a row after Mark McGhee and Vladimir Weiss to refuse Romanov.

And in a frank interview with MailSport, Rober revealed uncertainty over signing his own players set alarm bells ringing.

He said: "We had a really interesting meeting and I was impressed by Mr Romanov. He has some good ideas for his club.

"But the trouble was I have my opinions on how to coach and he has his ideas.

"Unfortunately these ideas would not come together.

"Romanov has a different thought on how to move a club forward.

"He's a businessman and I understand why he wants what he wants.

"But I have been 35 years as a professional in football.

"Don't get me wrong, I am not saying anything bad about Mr Romanov.

"He seemed like a nice guy, he treated me well and I was impressed by him during our meeting.

"Wespoke most of the day and went to watch the Kaunas second team at night.

"But I had this feeling we couldn't come together."

Rober's pedigree for the job was mixed.

His success with Hertha peaked when he led them to third place in the Bundesliga in 1999 and into the Champions League.

But his most recent job with Dortmund last year lasted just three months and he resigned saying he wasn't able "to reach the team".

In Germany his methods are viewed as old fashioned but he is hugely respected for his ability to build a team.

Rober admits that's where his strength

Continued ...Rober admits that's where his strength lies and where the biggest clash of cultures came with Romanov.

He said: "I have strong ideas on how to build teams and build players.

"I did it with Hertha over many years when we came from the Second Division to the Champions League.

"I like to work with the players and build a team together. I like to bring young players up.

"I know Romanov's idea is to take players from Kaunas and his other club in Minsk (MTZ Ripo).

"Some of this I liked but some of it I was not so sure about. Listen, I know Hearts is a good club and Edinburgh is a great city.

"I have been to the ground to watch games as a coach before and I enjoyed it.

"However, this offer was just not for me."

Rober's revelations will confirm Jambo fans' worst fears about the search for a new boss.

Despite Romanov's pledge in January to opt for a "British-style" manager, his six-month quest has still been hampered by his reputation for interfering.

Sounds bad but remember this is from the paper that stated the Icelander was certain to become manager within "24 hours" - guaranteed. (I partially believe this one though)

Spain to win 4-3 tonight, Aaragones to then quit, be in talks with Vlad about becoming the next Hearts manager only to refuse the offer the next day due to no guarantee of Vlad interference.
Maybe it's the German manager who has his shirt wide open, gold medalion type coach, forget his name, and are waiting until after the final before making the announcement.
Going to happen this week who ever the new man may be and i hope it's a good choice and not someone weak.

#33 mcaitchi, respect to you for posting a relevant comment on this occasion because you have been known in the past for just moaning for the sake of moaning.

anyway, about your call for hearts fans to "stand up now" and "do something" (x2).

has it not crossed your mind that hearts fans have actually thought about the possible things that they can do? believe it not not, us hearts fans have thought about this and suggested all feasible routes in order to get romanov to do the right thing by hearts and nobody has yet come up with a radical plan that would somehow make romanov change his ways.

saying stuff like "do something" is simply a ridiculous, lazy, self indulgent cop-out way of trying to pass yourself off as a concerned onlooker, without actually spelling out what YOU think people should do.

many, many people have done the same thing. if you want people to treat your post with credence, do something to outline what you think should be done. talk about protests are simply too vague and, to be honest too lazy.

i know you don't like me but i'm really not having a go at you, just your lack of substance. if you don't have any radical ideas, please don't perpetrate the tired old line of "do something".

I have e-mailed Hearts today to ask about how I would go about claiming a refund on my season ticket. I bought mine in May in the hope (Yes I had hope) that the club could move forward over the summer. Christ, we couldn't move back could we?. My greatest hope was that Hearts quest (and it is a quest) to find a respectable manager would prove fruitful. However, I'm growing so tired of the stories coming out of Tynecastle and every week I become more disillusioned. I fear now that we'll still see strings on whatever manager is sitting in the dugout come the start if the season. I'll only have myself to blame if I've thrown the best part of £400 down the drain.

#33 The weeteam would be delighted at losing the Edinburgh Derby as Hobs have the worst derby record in europe!! Hearts could fold tomorrow yet still would have won twice as much as the inferior wee mob from Leith!!

That aside,I really think it's time to take a stance and everybody who has bought season tickets should demand a refund!! Also the friendly with Hull City coming up should be boycotted in protest which is being shown on Setanta sports!!

The difference when Hearts complain about refs is HMFC are so paranoid it's just a plot to get you, and you alone. When the rest of us complain, it's because we think the refs are just garbage.
