INJURY MAY have limited Deividas Cesnauskis's role at Tynecastle in recent times to that of bit-part, but the Lithuanian winger may inadvertently have a large say in the identity of Heart of Midlothian's long-awaited next manager. As Vladimir Weiss continues his latest round of talks with Vladimir Romanov this weekend, Cesnauskis's brother and fellow Lithuania internationalist, Edgaras, has provided advice to the Slovakian coach.
Weiss and Edgaras Cesnauskis worked together during season 2006/7 at the Moscow club Saturn, and the midfielder retains a strong affection for his former manager.

"When Weiss got the proposal to go to Hearts, he called me," explained Cesnauskis. "
He knew that Romanov was from Lithuania, he checked the roster and new my brother was on the team. So Weiss called asking me about Hearts, what kind of team it is and what I thought he should do. I told him, of course he should go to Hearts."

Cesnauskis, three years younger than Deividas, spoke partly in jest when revealing he ordered Weiss to bring him to Edinburgh, should Hearts ultimately appoint the manager who is currently amid a second spell in charge of Artmedia Bratislava. Yet the possibility may have substance; Cesnauskis is actively seeking a move from Saturn after a disagreement with Weiss' replacement, Gadzi Gadzijev.

"He told me he would take me if Romanov was okay with that," said Cesnauskis, who clearly respects Weiss both professionally and personally.

"It would be a big step for him in his career to go to Hearts. The Scottish league is a much higher level competition than the Slovakian league. Weiss is a good coach but more than that, he is a great person. Sometimes he is too good. For instance, in practices he would never yell at his players. He is not a dictator."

The Weiss style therefore appears markedly different to that of Gudjon Thordarson, with reports in midweek emphasising his "hairdryer" approach to dealing with errant players. Thordarson, currently manager of struggling IA Akranes in Iceland, is understood to have annoyed Hearts officials with his strikingly public approach during the last seven days. Romanov, who has been made aware of the ex-Stoke City manager's comments, has never favoured those with a loquacious touch in the past. Weiss, by comparison, has largely kept his own counsel. Andrei Zygmantovich, another being considered for the Hearts post and one-time stand-out USSR defender, lacks the necessary coaching credentials to be handed the role full-time.

Given Romanov's history for preparing plans p, q, r and s, let alone a plan b, it would be dangerous to assume that any of the three supposed frontrunners will be appointed. Still smarting from the sudden U-turn of Mark McGhee, Hearts' owner has largely gone back to his eastern European football roots in attempting to stick to his statement of 1 January. At that time, Romanov assured supporters he was seeking a manager who will "preferably have experience of management in British football." Weiss lacks such a credential, but Champions League group stage exploits against the likes of Porto and Internazionale represent a viable alternative. He has also tasted endless domestic silverware success; only a single present manager in the SPL outside the Old Firm, Jim Jefferies, has won a single such trophy.

Fluent in Russian and with at least a basic grasp of English, the 43-year-old should, on paper, appeal to Romanov. Whether Campbell Ogilvie, Hearts' managing director, has a meaningful say on the situation is another matter entirely. Ogilvie, who it is understood had sounded out at least one other SPL manager other than McGhee via a third party, is likely to have preferred a coach based closer to home.

If Weiss is to be appointed, weeks after guiding Artmedia to a Slovakian league and cup double, Cesnauskis believes counter-attacking play will ensue in Gorgie. "Weiss liked the defensive type of game," added the former Dynamo Kiev player. "After you defend well you can get the ball and go on fast attack. I memorised one thing he used to tell us: First we have to 'not lose' and afterwards we can learn to win." And what of a potential alliance with the controversial Romanov? "Hopefully they will be on the same page," said Cesnauskis. "Romanov takes care of finances and he (Weiss] takes care of football. It's important that Weiss is flexible, he has got a versatile mind."

That final quality may be the most vital of all.

THE CANDIDATES

VLADIMIR WEISS

In his second spell in charge of Artmedia Bratislava, and regarded as one of the finest coaches in Slovakian history despite his tender age of 43. Weiss gained 19 caps for Czechoslovakia and 12 for Slovakia, representing the former at the 1990 World Cup.

Most famous in Scotland for defeating Celtic en route to the group phase of the 2005/6 Champions League – in which Artmedia held Rangers to two draws – he managed Russian outfit Saturn the following year, guiding them to an impressive fifth in the league, before opting to return home.

A quiet, unassuming individual, Weiss speaks fluent Russian and German, alongside basic English.

GUDJON THORDARSON

Linked with Hearts in the past, the 52-year-old Icelander has endured a troubled season with IA Arkanes in his homeland. Stoke City, Barnsley and Notts County have provided Thordarson with experience of British football, although his tenures at the latter two clubs were largely forgettable. Thordarson also managed the Icelandic national team for two years from 1997.

Famed for unorthodox training regimes and an occasional short fuse with players, Thordarson's friendship with Terry Butcher from the pair's time in England means the former England international, despite being a critic of Vladimir Romanov in the past, would be his Tynecastle assistant.

Won five titles and five Icelandic cups amid more than 400 playing appearances for Arkanes.

ANDREI ZYGMANTOVICH

The outside candidate of the favoured three, Zygmantovich enjoyed a distinguished career as a defender for Dinamo Minsk, FC Groningen and Racing Santander. He won 36 caps for the USSR, playing and scoring in the 1990 World Cup, before winning nine caps for Belarus.

Now 45, his coaching credentials have caught Romanov's eye in recent times. Zygmantovich coached MTZ Ripo, another part of the Romanov stable, before moving to become an assistant coach with FB Kaunas in Lithuania. However, his lack of UEFA coaching credentials ensure he cannot become the Kaunas manager at present, even though he holds such a post in all but name; such an obstacle would also mean he could only be employed on a caretaker basis at Hearts.

I for one would not be happy with any of these guys taking charge of Hearts.

What's wrong with trying to find a British manager?

We know that, for all these guys protest, they will still be Romanovs puppets.

Seems like Vlad is taking the easy option. I know for a fact if they don't win the first game of the season protest will begin instantly!

None of these managers will challenge the old firm, simple as that.

Who's to say a british manager would challenge the old firm.

Why does it seem like vlad is taking the easy option, he waited 6 months to try and get mark mcghee.

As for not winning the first game of the season and there will be protest instantly, what a load of rubbish.

#6 That is a real worry to me as well, Campbell Ogilvy, is the only person down there who has any integrity. I never felt that any of the guys mentioned above, were on his short leet.
As for my personal feelings about these three candidates. I won't be happy with any of them getting the job.Their names and history do nothing to inspire me, or to change my mind about renewing.
Romanov spoke about Hearts playing beautiful football, when he took over. Appointing Weiss should blow that "sound bite" out of the water.
Some fans are getting so desperate, they are making up "combos" to make each of these three look attractive.
I've seen Weiss & Robbo stated as a dream team!!!!
Also Weiss & Shaggy as a good balanced pairing!!!!
Aaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh.

This Vladimir Weiss advert is misleading. He has had 1 poor season in a decent league in Russia and Saturn got 8 no-score draws and ended 11th in the league (not 5th)and resigned due to poor performances. A quiet coach, using defensive eastern european tactics. i.e. not pressing the game in midfield. Patiently waiting for a mistake to make a counter attack. Sounds like more of the same to me. It was poor to watch last season and I'm not convinced enough to buy my season ticket again yet. I want to watch high tempo football like JJ or GB or CL would direct. We need a manager who understands the Scottish game, a manager who can be strong and lead the players and can scream at them if they ae not working hard enough. It is one thing playing defensive couter attacking football in Europe but it's not easy to master in the league. OK Rangers have just had a good season deploying it but they have a manager with a proven long term record but they still press the ball high up the park. The eastern Europeans don't understand pressing the ball.

On what information do you base your statement that "Cambell Ogilvie, is the only person down there who has any integrity" on, the fact that he is Scottish? I couldn't care if we played beautiful football or ugly football, I want winning football, and I don't care what the nationality of the players or manager is.

#1 - Instant protest is too late already. Romanovs business plan this year is not to get relegated, some bonus in top 6 but just keep in top league so can consolidate commercial business plans when UKIO is in a turbulent market.

This will not please the fans, all evidence is there that there is no real ambition for any significant on park or managerial investment and the only chance was for fans not to buy STs this year until Romanov made a proportional financial commitment.

The 9,000 have done HMFC and fans no favours!

#11 - CJ. You know my persuasion and I'll clarify firstly that I'm not on here to mischief make........

I'd not write off a decent and seemingly educated poster's comments as patronising drivel. By doing that, you lower yourself to that same level.....

From the outside looking in, I feel that the bottom line is that you can speculate all you want. See the negatives. See the positives. See whatever you want really. The bottom line is that you have no idea where this rollercoaster is going. No idea because the lack of communication is staggering. No idea because nobody really knows what the owner will do. No idea because the owner has not said anything with regard to his intentions.

Disagree??? Please refer to the AGM. Nuff said.

All sorts of stories, names, amounts etc etc etc get bandied about on a daily basis now but where do the stories come from??

As I said, it's a rollercoaster, get used to it.

#12 A bit sanctimonious, no?

Why are you singling out Hearts fans as particularly fascist when it comes to free speech? Have you tried criticizing Mixu on a Hibs story recently? I did it a couple of months back and was rounded on, even though I now hear similar views from hibees who are not that impressed with him.

It's a fact of football forum life that you can generally slag off your own club as much as you like....it's just different rules apply when it's an "outsider" taking part. There are all sorts of Jambos on here ranging from the optimistic to hyper-criticial and there is a place for them all but there is a general tiredness when it comes to fools like Riley, Old Firm etc etc who are just here to irritate folk.

These are the guys getting censored, and quite rightly. (Not that they bother me - all they do is highlight their own mental capacity)

I said it yesterday; the appointment of Vladimir Weiss as Head Coach of Hearts shows a total lack of respect for the club and to the fans of HMFC by Romanov, and I in no way mean that as a derodatory slight at Mr Weiss.

It shows Romanov to be yet again untrue to his word and more worryingly completely disassociated with any sentiment for what the club are trying to achieve. The statement made on January 1st was not worth the paper it was written on!

If Romanov's decision to go back on his word is based on MM's 11th hour decision to renege on a verbal agreeement to become the manager at Hearts (subject to a final meeting and certain assurances), then it shows that MM was merely a bone he was throwing the Hearts support and indeed would MM have ever been truly in control of team affairs??!

Hearts, the players at Hearts and the fans at Hearts need an English speaking manager REGARDLESS of nationality who has at least played in this country or preferably managed with some success in this country.

What we have learnt from Romanov's stable of below par coaches is that they simply do not have what it takes in the spl, they neither have the backing of the fans and in certain cases, the players.

Hearts are treading water right now and the sharks are circling ready to pick of our best players, youth team setup etc... all those who are of worth to the club and who make us what we are.

In order to go a long way to restoring our pride and identity Romanov has to appoint the right man to lead the team... another season like the last will see anarchy on the streets of Gorgie... the 9000 season ticket sign ups have merely bought him another season to toy with us some more!

Still not renewed my ST.

Although disappointed with Romanovs latest non decision(again),I cant help wondering who his football advisors are.He clearly,in my view, wants Hearts to be a success as he authorises pretty hefty contracts for players he has obviously been advised are pretty good. When he later finds out just how good they really are,or not,as is usually the case, then he throws a tantrum as he does not know who to trust for advice next time.He has spent a lot of money on Hearts and probably will spend more, but he needs to show a bit more humility and bring in the best advisors(British management)for his football business in Britain.A man with a business empire such as he has is not a stupid man, just confused like the rest of us Jambos.

Since Vlad's BS statement of January 1st , the communication and lack of respect shown by himself to us fans has been "doing my nuts in" , but credit where it is due.VR was not after MM to puppetise him.
If McGhee had turned down the Hearts job after the interview due to Vlad going to interfere too much you can bank on the papers "hearing" about the reason(we all -and Vlad knew that). For VR to want MM shows that at last he was going to follow the "British" way.He new he would not walk over MM therefore almost certainly was prepared to take a totally different stance.
It did not come off but what he tried to do - I did not think he would even attempt.
Unfortunately - what canditates are on offer don't exactly get the juices going.
Negatively though (for Vlad) - VR will not get himself the remaining £400k on the Velicka deal.....£600 down payment with the rest to come after 50 games played which he never will.
Once again Rangers are responsible for Vlad being out of pocket. Go on Romanov - plenty of out of commision Spetsnaz out there just waiting for a mission....... Demolish Ibrox.

The OF lost their threads becuase of religion/personal abuse commenting and Hibs and Hearts fans should not go the same way.

As for me getting personal in my post towards you, seriously? That comment was based on my interpretaion of posts from you just like #11. I've seen this kind of thing from you before and it gives neither you or your debating skills any credit at all.
