Bruno set for Hearts return after reserve clash

Published Date: 21 April 2008
HEARTS midfielder Bruno Aguiar was due to return from injury today in a reserve outing against Dundee United following a year-long absence with a persistent ankle problem.
The 27-year-old has completed his rehabilitation programme under the watchful eyes of club medical staff. Stephen Frail, Hearts' interim manager, revealed that Aguiar is now free to augment his fitness at reserve level, starting this afternoon at Forthbank Stadium, before a possible first-team return before the end of the season.

A training-ground tackle from former team-mate Julien Brellier last year left the Portuguese midfielder requiring two operations on the damaged ankle. He also underwent a third procedure to remove a tumour from his foot, further delaying his recovery.

His last appearance in a Hearts shirt was exactly a year ago today in a 2-1 defeat by Rangers at Ibrox, and Frail is heartened to see such an integral player finally ready to return. "Bruno's in line to play some part of the reserve match," he told the Evening News. "He'll probably come on and get involved later on when the game is stretched and I'm delighted he's now at this stage of being ready to play games.

"He's been out for such a long time and the recovery has been difficult for him. He is an influential type who we've missed in midfield and hopefully we might see him in the first team before the season finishes, although there won't be any additional pressure put on him."

Frail's central midfield options remain plentiful with Michael Stewart, Eggert Jonsson, Ruben Palazuelos and Fernando Screpis all favouring the middle of the park. However, he believes Aguiar's return could be akin to signing a new player.

"He was a big player for us in the past and it might be like having a new signing at the club because he's been out for so long. He has good technique, passing ability and awareness so we're looking forward to seeing how he progresses in the next few weeks."

Screpis was also expected to face United today in a strong reserve line-up also including Marius Zaliukas, Juho Makela and Jamie Mole. Frail is keen to keep players' fitness at a premium following Saturday's 3-2 victory over St Mirren at Tynecastle. Goals from Jonsson, Gary Glen and Larry Kingston secured the three points and Frail declared himself delighted with Hearts' scoring prowess following a mere two goals in their previous four matches. "We were maybe a bit fortuitous with the deflection for Eggert's goal but the second was well worked, the young lad Glen chipped in with the second and Kingston chipped in with a fantastic free kick," he said.

Asked about 18-year-old Glen, who scored his first top-team goal on his first start, he added: "A lot of big clubs, including Manchester United, were courting his signature when he came here but he chose us and I think that he has shown that he is a clever player.

"He should probably have scored with his first touch but he was bright enough to follow it in and get the finish in the end. He had a big smile on his face in the dressing room after the game."

27 posts and maybe 3 of them are about Bruno. This place really is going downhill.

Good to see Bruno stepping up his fitness. Dont think we will see him in SPL action before the end of the season, but some reserve games is the ideal preperation for him before next pre-season.

Mikey
Ruben
Stewart
Eggert
Larry

Competition is obviously a good thing - its a long season but IMO we need to trim that area down a bit.

TheMoth,

Back to the story though, I think that Bruno will need to play a much bigger role next season if we are to do anything but with the emergence of Glen etc then we may be able to get a decent team on the park... Or Vlad will make a late dash to Lithuania and fill up the spaces these boys could be competing for with more Beniusis', Ivaskevicius' and Barasas

Oh yeah. Good to hear Bruno's back playing again, but after a year out I'd be surprised to see him in the 1st team this season - it's not like there's anything to play for anyway... Reserve games, then the pre-season and he should be able to make a proper return next season.
We are quite well off for midfielders, and I suspect we'll see one of the midfielders go in the summer. But hey, once Bruno's fit it just means we're less likely to have to play a defender in midfield - and that's got to be a good thing!

JT&T no one is saying that yesterdays game was free flowing football, far from it but who knows if that has anything to do with the closeness of both teams and the fact they are fighting for 3rd. Clearly you will not know that...Dad?? You sure have many sons?

Anyway its clear your "match report" comes straight from a bitter old man with lots of history on your mind and no future ahead of you.
61

Maroon tinted glasses,

21/04/2008 14:39:08
#59 It wasnt the greatest game, but what would you expect when they have nothing left in the season to play for, maybe they should have taken the walter smith route and blamed the pitch for the fact they played pash.
62

Lenny,

21/04/2008 14:53:44
JT&T

Whilst I would agree that Hibs didnt play very well I think you are a wee bit over the top with your appraisal. Hibs were away from home and playing a form team. I dont think many teams would have been pleased to have left with a point. And after the hammerings Dun Utd have handed out to Hearts recently you should know fine well Und are a decent team.
63

Prof,

21/04/2008 15:18:18
#62 Both teams were very very poor. As for dishing out hammerings. Seem to remember a few demolition derbies recently.
64

Lenny,

21/04/2008 15:23:40
Ah, I too have witnessed Hibs beat Heats 6-2. What exactly is your point Prof?

My referring to the Hearts v Dun Utd game had relevance seeing as this is about a Dun Utd game. Exactly what does it have to do with derby matches?
65

#1GGTTH,

21/04/2008 15:33:04
Prof has been on self destruct long before Friday's AGM. He is really beginning to get quite worried it is clear to see from his postings.
66

Prof,

21/04/2008 15:33:14
#64 The point is the two teams were very very poor and JT&T's comments should be seen in that context.
Your reference to hammerings was completely unnecssary. If we go down that route it will simply end up with a lot of stats showing Hearts beating Hibs more times than vice versa.
67

GrahamL,

21/04/2008 15:37:17
#66 Prof - calm down. I think Lenny was making a fair point that we shouldn't be sitting around saying Dundee Utd are a poor team. Because a) they're in the top 6 and b) they've given us some royal humpings in the last couple of seasons.
For the love of god don't try to turn this into a "yah boo sucks, we're better than you" thing, we've been over this about a million times. And everyone else is bored to tears with it...

Prof, no the reference to hammerings was relevant as Hibs took a draw at Tannadice against what I would call a decent team. The hammerings against Hearts mearly point to that.

JT&T, who I was replying to doesnt seem to have issue with what I said. Then, he does have a brain.

GrahamL, spot on mate, I would have thought the point I was making was obvious though.
70

#1GGTTH,

21/04/2008 15:48:48
JT&T Your points at 57 and 59 are still there you know? Why the backtracking now? The penalty was a penalty simple as, Gatheussi landed accidentaly on Hunt in my opinion but I still took great pleasure in it. The only people posting about the flair football on here are the Jambos nowadays? Saying that though still saw some tidy link up play in midfield yesterday moslty from Zemmama. You say you watched the game but I dont believe you.
71

Prof,

21/04/2008 15:49:12
#67 Think you'll find the original comment from JT&T was about the game and not the teams.

I watched the game - it was poor. So fair comment from JT&T.
Lenny brought up the hammerings.
72

Lenny,

JT&T

I am fully aware that Hearts beat Dun Utd, however the big wins they achieved against you do point towards them being a decent team. I could have refered to the way the played in the cup final, but they still got beat their.

I have also agreed that I didnt think Hibs played well. I just think a 1-1 draw at Dun Utd should be put in context. A result most would take.

Re Free Flowing football. It seems to be Hearts fans that mention this more than Hibees these days. I agree that the style has changes since Mixu took over, but we have been picking up more points. And the Jambo's always told us it was points that matter. FWIW, I personally would be happiest with somewhere in between.

73

Not relevant to the point I was making I'm afraid. Unless you would like to twist it and say that as Hearts are so bad then Dun Utd must be terrible since Hearts beat them? ; )

Jam Tarts 1874,

On the Rebound 21/04/2008 16:07:04
Well guys, I'm afraid I have to report a 3-1 defeat in the reserves. Mackle scored late on for Hearts.

The team was:

Ridgers, Ivaskevicius, Divine, Zaliukas, Rapnik, Mearns, Husband, Screpis, Makela, Mole, Mackle.

Yes, that is Ivaskevicius at right back! And I have to say that he is even worse in that position than the others he has been tried at. He was at fault for 2 if not all 3 of United's goals, the rest of the defence was pretty poor as well though.

Anyone who wants to know why Makela doesn't get a game ought to have been at Forthbank today. It was the most inept performance I have ever seen from a centre forward at this level. He was offside every time Hearts had possession, the flag actually caught him about 8 or 9 times. He wasted every bit of possession he had, then to top it all right at the end he missed the biggest open goal ever. After some nice play Screpis was clean through and should have scored himself, but he squared it to Makela, dead centre of the 6 yard box, keeper was out of it, yet Makela sclaffed it yards wide.

On the positive side, Bruno came on for 25 minutes and looked sharp, Mackle and Screpis looked good. Once again Eddie Mearns was by far Hearts' best player, unlucky to be sacrified to allow Bruno on. It is a pity for Mearns that Hearts have so many central midfield players. He is solid, uses the ball well, rarely wastes possession and has a nice little burst of pace too, would get a game for many other SPL sides.

Gatheussi DID grab/touch the shoulder of De Vries when he should have stood a step back an walked him out toward the touchline. De Vries twirled round in a dramatic fashion before dumping himself on the ground. IMO it took more effort from De Vries to throw himself down than it would have to stay on his feet. Therefore he went down easily. Different from diving as that would mean he was not touched at all.

Are you saying that De Vries didnt go down easily? Regardless, Mixu still seems to say that the responsibility lies with Gatheussi. Mixu knows fine well he would have most likely gone down the same way.

That is what managers do though whether it be Mixu or Walter Smith Gordon Strachan! Arsene Wenger is one that also springs to mind as someone who will defend his players no matter what.

CJ

Yeah, I agree what you say about our full backs. I personally would rather play Hanlon at left back and McCann at right back.

re Frail, I imagine its becouse he has became something of a joke figure at the club. He is never going to be fully accepted by the Hearts fan, espec after top quality managers have been promised.

93 I have a funny feeling that the OF may spill more points than we expect! It'll go down to the wire, that much is for sure.

GGTTH - well, you would know all about diving from watching Zarabi's antics in the first half.

99 many still see frail as a puppet for vlad though. A "yes" man who does whatever he wants. PLus Vlad has constantly promised a full time reputable manager although it does seem as though the signs have been there all along that Frail has been in line for the role. His comments regarding the post almost seem scripted (by Vlad) at times, he is being put forward for his badges, asking the fans to back him etc etc...

Rod Petrie came out on the tv yesterday and said that at the time of meeting Mixu he thought he would be perfect to come into the hibs job in a couple more years after someone else but after deeper discussion he had belief in Mixu to take the reigns right away. Its clear to see from recent weeks that he is not the polished article but he has good team spirit and strong backing/support from the board.

Im not sure but was the main reason behind hearts fans wanting a new experienced manager not so that he would take full responsibility of transfers and team selection etc. As long as Frail is there you know exactly who is pulling the strings.

#77 Tried it once, not really my cup of tea to be honest. Made my head hurt.
I prefer just to jump in a start arguments based on an imagined slight against me or my football team. It's fun. You should try it some time...

#99 The reality is that there about 30 people who post here that includes the Hearts obsessed Hibs fans, like Lenny, Pedantic , etc.
So not really indicative of anything.

Just bought a couple of lottery tickets for which game Mixu Pantyliner gets his first sending off next season.
For all you FFFHibees that spend your time on here - did you see the rage and venom in his face when wanting De fries to walk off the pitch ?
In fact - what price Pantyliner getting sent to the stands before the season ends.

Tall , Larry and Goncalves - 3 certs to go during the summer as Vlad will actually keep his word for once and get rid of "big wage earners that could be doing more".
8k,15k & 7k a week............That's over 1.5m a year.
Almost forgot - It would also line Vlad's pockets handsomely as two will be sold for quite a bit of cash.
AND THEY ARE NOT ON "Hearts" BOOKS.(but their wages are)

#116 - Vic. A couple of weeks ago someone posted a link to some Eastern European Agency. It contained details of the players they had on their books, including Kingston. I have no idea what proportion of the contract they own - it didn't elaborate.

Can't remember what the website was, but it was posted on one of these threads. Don't shoot the messenger!!!

Will I be first to comment on story! What is happens today everybody? There is much war, and the crazys I see were posting very early I see (#1 and #2).

Player Aguiar is like new player for Hearts. This is good like new signing, so big salary bad player can leave. Kingston maybe? Has he score last goal for Hearts? If yes then I hope he leave with bottom six championship medallion.
