Published Date: 19 March 2008
EGGERT JONSSON'S agent will fly to Edinburgh next week for critical talks with Hearts on his client's protracted contract extension.
Reykjavik-based Olafur Gardarsson has so far received three offers of a new deal from Tynecastle but has yet to complete negotiations on behalf of the 19-year-old Icelander. He explained today that the situation has reached the "make or break" stage.

Jonsson's current contract runs to 2010 but Hearts are obliged to grant him an extension after he triggered an appearance clause by playing against Aberdeen in January. The club wish to secure his services until 2012 but Gardarsson is not keen for his player to sign for that length of time.

"They want Eggert to sign for four and a half years, until 2012, but I would like a shorter contract. That's one of the things we are not agreeing on," Gardarsson told the Evening News.

"The discussions are moving in the right direction but they are not finished. I received an offer on Sunday from Hearts, which was their third offer. I've discussed it with their representative, Mr Mindaugas, who I think is from the company that owns Hearts (Ukio Bankas Investment Group].

"The plan is to meet in Edinburgh next week. There are a couple of things unsolved but if we move ahead we hope to finish it next week. It's make or break now."

Gardarsson claims Hearts have yet to grant Jonsson several payments which are now overdue from his existing contract. However, the player stressed today that he is keen to remain in Edinburgh.

Jonsson said: "I'm happy at Hearts, I'm still very young and this is my first season in the first team. Hopefully I can stay here and keep improving. Obviously, you think about the contract talks off the pitch, about what's going to happen, but I still have two years left on my contract at the moment.

"We are in talks to extend that and they are going good. They probably expect me to sign a new contract some time soon."

Jonsson has been included in the full Iceland squad for next week's friendly in Slovakia and is expected to win his second international cap, recognition of his impressive form at club level this season. Gardarsson is aware he must schedule any trip to Scotland around his client's international commitments.

He added: "I will have to come over when Eggert is around so we will plan the contract talks accordingly. He is enjoying life as a footballer and making progress. He is in the Iceland national squad for next week's match with Slovakia and, in terms of football, everything is fine. We hope his new contract can be finished soon." Meanwhile, a strong Hearts reserve side went down 4-2 to Dundee United at Station Park yesterday.

Neil McCann, Jose Goncalves, Deividas Cesnauskis and Audrius Ksanavicius all featured for the Jambos, whose two goals both came from Finnish striker Juho Makela.

At least his agent isnt Willie McKay, wee bit concerned about the overdue payments tho. Don't know if I would sign a contract extension if I wasn't getting paid as agreed

Another voice,

Agents prefer shorter contracts as they can earn more money from negotiating contracts or moving people on. A happy player with a long term contract doesn't make an agent rich.

I think that Makela has been a regular scorer at reserve level this season, while i know thats short of spl standard the forwards who are currently getting into the first 11 have continually failed to score during their reserve team outings. Makela should have been give 3-5 games on the bounce to show what he can do a couple of months ago. The fact he's never been on the bench shows how frail has little to no say in team selection/ substitutions etc.

10

GrahamL,

So, the facts are:
-Jonsson has a contract to 2010
-Hearts want him to sign one to 2012
-The agent wants a shorter contract than the one on offer

Now, I am occassionally too cynical for my own good. But would I be alone in thinking the agent maybe wants Eggy to sign a contract the same length as his existing one, but being paid more money? And maybe getting a nice little signing on fee while he's at it??

Our resreves have had 1 victory in the league since November and Frail quotes how well people are performing there. Not been many games but illustrates lack of depth.

I agree that Makela has never been given a chance at Hearts. Why he has never been given a run of games as a striker, not wide on the right for goodness sake, I'll never know. Played OK against Barcelona and scored our goal!!

C'mon give the guy a chance. If he can't cut it after 5/6 games then fair enough move him on but let's see what he can do.
13

Lion-O "Lord Of The ThunderCats,

19/03/2008 12:52:31
How can it be "critical talks" or "make or brake" time when his contract runs until 2010?

Does that mean that every player who has a contract until 2010 is in "crunch talks" with their club?

Hate to see how the Scotsman will describe Boozy's contract talks seeing as how it ends this summer - probably life or death or similar over exaggeration.

Whether or not enyone else had been "bumped" for their money by anyone I was working for would be almost imaterial. It would be the monies due to me that would concern me.
I dont think I would be too willing to sign a further contract if my employers failed to honour the first.
21

Pedantic_Hibee,

Sounds like the agent has had his head turned with potential suitors offering him a decent cut of a transfer fee, hence his intention to get a shorter deal.

"shorter deal" being a byword for "Causing as much hassle as I can, culminating in my client getting a transfer somewhere else so I can build the conservatory of my dreams".

Unless I'm wrong of course......

I cannot comment on football financial matters but I can in other cases. Hearts paid my company an outstanding debt on Monday, the sum was for £3,200. I received the cheque 3 days before we were due to appear in court, as I started legal proceedings against HoMFC one month ago. The debt has been outstanding since August 2007! Late payment was not an oversight by Hearts accounts dept, as I am aware of another debt owed to a print company for £5,000 this debt is also long overdue. Maybe HoMFC need cash to pay internal expenses that's why 'Joe Public' is kept waiting.

We should do everything we can to keep him on a longer deal as he is only getting better
If the agaent doesnt like it tough we still have him untill 2010 anyway
The lad must look at what Nade Panilla and Kingston get week in week out for doing not a lot (apologies to Kingston) and he wants a slice
Who can blamr him
On another point cmon Frail give Makela a rin please

#11 good one.

#12 I think you've hit the nail on the heid.

If Eggy has a claus he has a claus I suppose so they are naturally following up on it, but I hope he doesn't get too greedy for his own sake - vlad has a nasty habit of hitting the NEXT button.

I agree with number 4 about the withheld payments - its very cheeky - its not like the players are self-employed.

My impression is that hmfc is just one of many concerns for Ubig and they are not spending anymore than they really have to on the playing side of things. They must have bigger marine vertebrates to fry than:
smelly hobo (107 year old wee) shrimp,
lanarkshire (served on a damp pitch) cod,
dundee (ya) bass
falkirk (mental) mackerel
....not to mention the flilthy Old Firm bad halibuts.

Yep, young Mr Jonnson will have to walk on egg shells over this one....but hopefully he'll get the few squid that he's due asap.

Some companies just wont pay until the time comes they have to, UBIG are one of these companies.
Why pay until the last minute is their motto, better in our account than theirs, quite annoying as I had to chase some of these f****rs on a regular basis, nothing sinister, just tight.

Yes number 48 but if you havent paid your tax by the 15th of April legal proceedings will begin if you are still on the road. I think that is the point here. The court date was set for 3 days and filed a month ago which means the payment was already later than the 60 days allowed, not just held until the last minute.

Everyone gets paid eventually, its not something I would recommend and its not morally right either suppose a new start up was owed money they could very well go to the wall as they need the cash flow (not just new starts up but any business really, although things are likely to be tighter with a start up). Not really fair is it, then Hearts would not have to pay the bill, Mr Romanov knows what he is doing alright.

I'm not a lawyer, but I reckon unless there are some unusual industry standards that allows football clubs to withhold payment on their employees; especially when it comes to payments arising from contractual clauses (which is possible) - Jonsson might be within his rights to claim that his contract has been breached and sue for constructive dismissal.

But I doubt Vlad will give a foxtrot about that possibility?

Oh and I have to do the dishes afterwards! And sign up for a season ticket for the next ten years.

#112, Dont worry Lenny, Hibs only play at Tynie twice a year usually, its not always boring!
I remember a 0-0 draw, think Burridge was in goal, when you actually just about did a lap of honour at this fine achievement despite only having 1 corner and no shots on target during the game.
That was a boring game only made bearable by glorious sunshine.
Actually I'm very bored today. Can you tell!?!?

That must be the biggest 'pot kettle black' moment I'v seen on here mate.

I have lost track of the amount times Hearts got a late equaliser and celebrated like they won the Champions League.

Two goals for Makela! Why isn't he in the 1st team squad? Mind you with the likes of Jamie Mole and Eliot it will be hard to break into the 1st team!
110

Chas Niceass,

Come on, different when you score an equaliser, but to celebrate a goaless draw when you played anti football, theres a big difference there I'd say.

Get a grip Frail and get Makela and Nade up front on saturday
113

Chas Niceass,

19/03/2008 15:42:33
#119 Lenny it happened. Late equalisers do tend to be a relief though. 4-4 game for example. Know what your saying though, a draw is never enough.

115

JC_No7,

19/03/2008 15:48:05
why are Makela's 2 goals in the reserves better than Mole's 2 goals and Beni's 2 goals the week before?

As Frail said some time ago, sometimes players get better when they are not playing.

Just get behind the guys on the park and stop going on about the likes of Makela and Beslija who don't give as much effort to the cause as the guys actually out there on the pitch.
116

LyonHearts,

Effort ,I would run around mental for 90 minutes what does that prove ability confidence and someone who can finish is what we need

Hmmm, not blessed for strikers all of a sudden, they've all gone eh.
Dont think Makela has ever got a decent run, other than Velicka and Nade, Bednar and Jankauskas before them, no striker really has.
Pinilla might have but he's altogether - well different.
Perhaps its unfair to criticise the forwards too much when we play with, very good mind you, 2 holding types week in week out, whilst Mikey and Larry recover.
Driver is a bit injury prone and the other wing is usually a waste of space.
Screpis gets an honourable mention this week, can we look forward to his debut?

Big Rob - quite interesting but (hopefully) nothing that can;t be fixed with a bit of redesigning by the architects.

I would imagine that these are issues faced by any major development.

Also interesting re the counter terrorism aspects. I wonder how many existing grounds actually meet these criteria? I bet Tannadice doesn't for a start.

Seems a trifle over the top in that regard. Not downplaying the risk of terrorism but can anyone truly protect themselves against a suicide bomber?

I refer specifically to Eskbank's post #107 on the thread to which you referred.
So "WEIRD", "FIXATED" and "DESPERATE" are OK by your standards then VITRIOL ??
I guess that explains quite why Jambos are increasingly so vilified, inasmuch as double standards are the stock in trade of some of you, with the rest having a seeming yellow streak and unable to stand up to you (presumably with the pitiful few doing it out of some kind of bizarre loyalty to each other)..while at the same time, crying over the fragmentation WITHIN the club......it's not hard to see that the fanbase is already broken and lost to ever being a real cohesive force. Vlad's probably right...you lot are beyond redemption and are well stuffed...everybody else does, why should HE miss out !!

"Bile" and "Filth"???....Sorry, but these are words more often associated with you Muchacho.
Point at issue here is that YOU pronounced to all and sundry as recently as yesterday that I was a poster you call "Reily"/Riliy Hamish (or similar). I've said to you now many times that you are lying...or at it's kindest, very very mistaken... when you insist on this course of action. My challenge to your claim therefore was that you provide some proof...even a little bit might leave you with a scintilla of credibility Muchacho..instead what we get by return are a series of wild allegations about abuse to you, when in fact direct to you, and indirectly (OK...I'll play along for the moment) via VICTOR all I've done here is to ask you if you intend to pursue proving these allegations...or if an apology will be forthcoming. Simple and easy, Eh?..Now..what's the answer then Muchacho???

Fact is that you had a nerve accusing ME of being wotsisname, while you'n'VICTOR continue with daily banal game of answering each others emails often within a VERY few minutes to a quite unprecedented degree, and it therefore ill befits you sir, to then make spurious allegations in similar fashion about me, when you abuse the spirit of these posts in this fashion, particularly when you use it to berate anyone.Let me repeat what I said to VICTOR (this pretence that you're two people is SO tiresome, but if that's your wish..)yesterday. Sorry my friend,i was just trying to prove to everyone and myself that you are NOT the imfamous Biley Hamish. As you are aware oor Biley stated that he was a Motherwell supporter and i thought you would exonerate yourself by telling us what team you support.Obviousy it would be to big a coincidence if you to where a Well supporter also.
I reckon you being a man of great integrity and morals would not lie about supporting another team so if you tell me who you support i will tell you who i support ???

#231. Erm in a word NO. You sir are way off the mark there and realy must try harder. Facts as you say are facts. Some might say indisputable?? Your whole basis for talking, typing, being here is not based on that theory. Its based on your train of thought, your ideas, your mentality. I however do not play by your rules, I play by mine:0)

So Riley what nationality is Screpis?? You been saying all weeek that he's Chiliean?? Sorry but he's Argentinian:0) OH how the mighty fall.

Everybody knows that LAJ is Biley, that means he claimed to support Motherwell and that he is based in the luxurious surrounding of Lanarkshire, which he claimed was better than Edinburgh!

We also know that at every opportunity he joins his bigot mates at Rangers games.

All you need to know is that I am a fan of EVERY scottish football team when they play the OF. I believe that a good strong HOMFC would be a good thing for the domestic game, and frankly I reckon you guys are allowing the owner to f*ck things up to the extent th\a I have concerns for the future viability of Scotland's third largest club which SHOULD,( if they weren't totally looply run) be our collective best chance to diminish OF on-going domination. However, the club is supported by a number of morons (N.B NOT all Hearst fans are morons, but a small number continually choke these posts with unmitigated drivel)who are frankly both too thick and too lazy to do anything positive to support their club beyond the usual "we're bigger than the hibby's mentality" and I have NO PROBLEM whatever in confronting these dummies who get so, so irritated by my ripostes, that frankly it becomes a serious hoot to noise them up.
That's about all YOU need to know muchacho..OK?

Oh, I'm SO , SO glad you made that last contribution, which illustrates what a boneheid you really are. Irony is so totally lost on you intit?? As for the Screpsis thing, frankly, I didn't know WHO he was far less where he came from until you droned on about this, and I realised eventually that he is claimed to be a player at your midden.....as for his nationality.....ask Reily.....he might know.
You totally missed the born mid-air between Chile and Argie and is now a naturalised Italian etc...boneheid !!
But c'mon......what's Bremen like Muchacho???

Well, it's nice to know that finding enough vitriol and bile keeps you up so late......mind you, its not like you'll have work in the morning.
I'm amazed that you of all people want to raise the "Reily" allegation again, after your abjest and complete failure to prove even a JOT of the drivel that you've been spouting of late on that one. Let me ask you again bigmouth...put up or shut up.
As for what team I support....that's MY business is it not? All I'll tell you is that I'm a fan of any club in Scotland palying either of the OF, inc. HMFC. That's all YOU need to know you nosey Barsteward !!

Oop....didn't realise your diahorrea filled a second post there. It's clear from youtr tone that you are having GREAT difficulty keeping the lid on your sanity and the thought of the effect I'm having on your blood pressure brings me quite enormous pleasure......and secure in the knowledge that there is ABSOLUTELY nothing you can do to stop me having a go at you, and that you're increasingly unable to match or handle it. That MUST hurt Muchacho!!
I mean, even if you WERE able to have me moderated, (and I'm no more guilty of lambasting YOU than you are of me) then you have to believe that like you do, I'd re-surface as AN Other somehwhere.....but THE GORGY CORGY thing really annoyed you greatly didn't it. I permitted myself a wee smug smile at that one sonny.
SO....you don't like my posts...TOUGH..get over it!!
