Published Date: 27 March 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen was today convinced Scotland striker Steven Fletcher will be fit to face Motherwell in Saturday's Euro showdown despite picking up a chest injury on his Hampden debut.
The Easter Road youngster's 21st-birthday celebrations were cut short as he was forced to quit the friendly against Croatia at half-time, immediately raising concerns over his fitness for the trip to Fir Park.

But, while Scotland coach George Burley, who saw his first match in charge of the national side end in a creditable 1-1 draw, described the blow Fletcher had taken to his chest as "painful", Paatelainen believes his 14-goal hitman will be desperate to play against Motherwell.

He said: "For any player, even if it isn't your first time, it is fantastic to play for your national team. It's a real confidence booster and hopefully Steven will return with a spring in his step." Before being replaced by Gavin Rae, Fletcher had a hand in Scotland's equaliser, threading a pass through for Kenny Miller to claim his 11th international goal – and afterwards Burley admitted the Hibs youngster had caught his eye. He said: "I thought he did well. He is a young player who has been doing very well for Hibs and he deserved his call-up. I am sure he will play a big part in the next few years for Scotland."

Another whom Paatelainen believes will be back at Easter Road desperate to be involved at the weekend is Moroccan striker Abdessalam Benjelloun, who stepped off the bench to score his country's last goal in their 4-1 win over Belgium in Brussels.

Like Fletcher, it was Benji's first full cap and again Paatelainen hopes the experience will prove beneficial for Hibs with the former Moghreb Fes forward having only this week expressed his frustration at a lack of starting opportunities at Easter Road.

The Hibs manager said: "It's fantastic for Benji. He's been unfortunate with injuries this season and others have taken the chance to play and do well but to come off the bench and score in your first full international is a wonderful boost for the confidence."

Paatelainen took in Finland's under-21 European Championship qualifying match against Scotland at Pittodrie last night, a match which the young Scots won 2-1 with Hibs' Ross Campbell who, like Benji, has been on the periphery for much of the season, playing the first 56 minutes.

But Paatelainen revealed Yves Ma-Kalambay hadn't travelled as intended for Belgium's under-21 clash with Cyprus in Paphos, instead staying in Edinburgh to receive treatment for the groin problem which has troubled him since Hibs' win over Falkirk a month ago.

However, Paatelainen believes the big keeper will be ready for the trip to Lanarkshire.

The Finn also insisted he has no intentions of carrying out his own inspection of the Fir Park pitch.

He said: "If the pitch is playable and we can pass the ball then there is no problem."

Haven't seen the goal yet but It's been obvious for some time how good the young fella is. Good to see Benji has got on the score sheet for the Maroc boys too...
There's plenty of goals in this Hibs side as long as we can keep everyone happy. That looks a lot more likely with Mixu in charge than it ever did with Chocolate Jonny, bright future lies ahead on the green side of Embra. Although i must say it would appear an even brighter future lies ahead for Fletch though not too soon i hope...

The lad is a quality player and his game seems ideally suited for international football. Would like to see him play up front as a partner for miller, i think they two could work well off each other.

Prof,

Fletcher merited a 4 out of 10 in the Times. In my view that is very generous. The reality is he should not have been in the team, he's done precisely he-haw so far. Can't see him coming even close to Robbo's goal record.

Christ your hatred towards Hibs holds no bounds! Fletcher played 45 minutes, playing in a totally alien left midfield role and set up Scotlands only goal. And you think he should get less than 4/10? This would have nothing to do with him being a Hibs player I guess.

I try to give you the benefit of the doubt but Im sorry, your just a d#ck. (and Im still sure your Ronaldo...)

Prof you really are a sad Yam Fud of the highest order. Your hatred of Hibs now reaches to any Hibs player who represents his country. Fletcher may not have set the the heather on alight last night playing in an alien position, but hey he provided the assist pass in which Miller equalised with.
Fletcher is in the Scotland team on merit at present, how many Yam players this season can come close to the amount of goals he has scored?

#10 Sorry lenny, mine is a perfectly valid comment not based on any supposed hatred you think I have of Hibs.
As I said yesterday neither Fletcher or Berra merited a cap. Fletcher is not a proven goal scorer, he's a youngster in a fairly poor Hibs team. It is incredible that there are Hibs supporters out there that think that a few good games for Hibs merits a full Scottish Cap.

Lenny,

Prof

Stevie Wonder could see you have a hatred for Hibs and its complete nonsense to suggest otherwise. Like it or not, this DOES affect your judgement and is completely transparent in all your posts.

For the record Fletcher hasnt had a few good games for Hibs, he is consistently good. He is only 21 and has been a first team regular for years. the whole of Scottish football seems to rate him except a few Jambo's. Go figure.
14

the big team r hibs an u know it,

27/03/2008 15:33:13
prof AKA Muppetheid, fletcher has scored 15 goals this season. Bearing in mind he's missed 10 games thru injury. he was played out of position as he's a centre-forward. Of course you'd know better than the real madrid scouting team, think not!!! Jealousy, jealousy!!

goals dont lie, and you opinion really doesn't matter, again you assume your opinion is one which merits any sort of consideration,

you again think you know better than the scottish national manager, the majority of hearts fans, all hibs fans and most of the related press in this country......you epitomise all that is bad about the superiority complex held by some hearts fans.

Well done Fletch the first of many caps I'm sure.

The other big story today is that Ian Murray has finally signed until the end of season 09/10 good news for Hibs as he has been outstanding since returning.

8 and 9 you are a pair of little boys who have lost their way. Yes Fletch is only 21 but l think has scored more goals than anyone at Tynecastle this year, yes he is playing in a very poor Hibs team who are well above the big team in Edinburgh and last but not least he is Scottish. 3 strikes and you are out, grow up you pair or mummy will put you to bed without your cookies. Fletch is a super young player with plenty of tallent, but unfortunatly for hibs, wont be there next season as he will be going along the M8 to be with Thompson and Whitiker at Ibrox.

With that said, I think with mixu at the helm of hibs, you will be fighting for 3rd spot next season.

I would hope it would be for 2nd just behind the teddy bears but well, even a blue nose needs to look at it relisticly :p lol

Isn't the whole point here that if Fletcher does prove to be international class he will be sold.

Probably to Hearts!!!!

Settle down Brett. We probably have something in common. I don't know whether you hope Hearts will lose on Saturday but I certainly do. Also, although I am not remotely interested in who they are playing, I hope Hibs win.

The point you failed to address however is the cetainty that Fletcher will be out the door. That's where Hearts and Hibs are so different. If Vlad comes right again, we will have good players coming in, not going out.

Neutral Observer,

Interesting that there were sveral players in the Scotland team land night who were given their chance by Hibernian, the place for Scottish players to emerge. Ok, Hibs have their share of foreign players too, but things are in perspective.

Miller, Fletcher, Caldwell, Brown. I could mention Hartley but he did not manage to get up to the required standard in his time at Easter Road.

The comments by Ronaldo (Prof) and others about Fletcher not being up to Scotland standard - I would agree, but he will be with experience and it was good to see Burley giving him that experience. On the other hand, I will not hear that players like Gary Teale or Gavin Rae are up the standard we require if Scotland are rated 12 in the world.

That has to be your best ever post "If Vald comes right"
And what makes you think he will ??
sacking the manager for interfering with team selection
Selling the nucleus of a fair side ??
Selling on loan players at a critical part of the season ???
Yes - I can see where you are coming from. Get a lottery ticket this weekend, more chance of sucess there

IC,

Fletcher not a proven goalscorer? Considering he was the tournament top scorer when Scotland's U19 team were runners up in the European Championships (which was where he caught the eye of Real Madrid), got 10 goals in the 2005-6 season mostly from midfield, 12 goals last season, and has 15 so far in an injury-hit season, and I believe 4 in 4 games for Scotland U21s, it's enough proof for me to think he doesn't need a map to find the goal!

To be fair to Fletch though I think he's still learning the game, and probably would have been on the bench if we hadn't lost all the left-sided players from the squad. But good to see Burley being able to use his first friendly to get some of our best prospects involved and give them a bit of experience, while still getting a creditable result. Most successful national teams do this as it helps the players' development, but also means a less steep learning curve for them when they're at the stage of becoming 1st choice. So for example over half the Croatia team last night already have over 50 caps despite being a relatively young side, but in their last qualifying campaign all that earlier experience bore fruit for them (as England discovered to their cost).

This development of young players was almost non-existent in the Roxburgh and Brown eras, and look how low that led to us sinking under Vogts - when he came in, the last generation had all just retired, but we had virtually no one with any experience at all of international squads to replace them with. So all credit to Burley so far.

Sir Albertt x2,

So a few of the Yam fuds think Fletcher is not a goal scorer? Well compared to Calum Elliot, he's Ronaldo!!

kiwidoug,

22 In A Row 27/03/2008 23:06:20
Truth Wins - I have no idea whether he will come right or not - I expect not.

My point is that if he does we could well be back in the position of challenging for honours. If not, we will be like Hibs - assuming we are still in business.
28

Cabbage Heid,

Kiwidoug - haha - cheers for giving me a good laugh this morning. Fletch to Hertz?!? Not in a million years - maybe one of your competitors for next years Champions League - like Real Madrid (is it not next season that Vlad has you scheduled to win it? (LMAO)) - doubt it though. Fletcher has talent but his feet seem to be firmly enough on the ground to realise he's in the best place he can be to develop his talents over the next season or two.
Well done to Fletch for EARNING his first cap - many many more to come I think :0)
