Published Date: 06 May 2008
MAURICIO PINILLA has signed a new three-year contract with Hearts after the club invoked their option to buy him outright from the Italian side Inter Milan.
The Chilean internationalist was owned jointly by Hearts and Inter with each club paying 50 per cent of his £12,000-a-week wage, but the Evening News can reveal that the Tynecastle side now own him exclusively. The new deal is understood to be on similar terms to Pinilla's previous one but with a more performance-related structure. It could also be extended for a fourth year if Hearts desire.

Vladimir Romanov and the club hierarchy have invested serious money in helping the striker overcome a series of physical injuries and mental problems and still believe he could offer a worthwhile return.

Pinilla has had a rethink on his future after recently declaring a wish to return to Chile to spend more time with his two-year-old daughter, Agustina. He has managed just eight appearances, scoring twice, in two injury-plagued years in Scotland but has now committed himself to Hearts until 2011. The story was confirmed today by Pinilla's agent in Santiago, Hugo Rubio. "Mauricio has signed for another three years, he is happy and is looking forward to staying in Scotland," he said.

The 24-year-old forward has recovered from knee ligament damage sustained during a training session in January but is likely to undergo a rigorous pre-season this summer before appearing for the first team again.

I just hope this is all some kind of scam for Vlad to get Pinilla on the cheap....realtively. Now he really proves himself and then gets sold on for big bucks.

Otherwise Vlad is either off his little rocker or its something else...none of the above?

Will be interesting to see if this is going to work out like the Skacel purchase with an immediate sale at profit, or whether they really want to keep him at Tynie...

Pinilla has showed enormous potential, but his mental and physical state leaves me in considerable doubt as to wether this will ever be realised at Hearts...

As much as he is potentially a great player, Im sick fed up of reading about his comeback and latest setbacks and would be happier he left for good.

Even if he has one great year and is sold on, how much profit would be actually make given the money already thrown at the guy. It is at least good news that Inter had been paying 50% of his salary, hopefully the new wage structure will give him a kick up the jacksy but I aint holding my breath.

#11 Exactly, not the kind of attitude we want to encourage in the dressing room is it?

Allowing over paid, under performing players to remain at the club suggests the current proforma is acceptable. A total re-shake is required to force the mildly talented ones to actually knuckle down and perform.

GrahamL,

The actual fee involved would be a useful bit of information, but provided his new contract needs him to turn up, play and score to get anywhere close to £12k a week then I guess fair enough. Based on what I've heard I still have my doubts that he'll ever get his head straight, but there must be a reason why we've signed him - and I can only hope it's because the management structure still think he can do the job.

Oh, and a reprise of the old cry of "new manager, THEN signings".

No shades of grey here, this is either going to go really badly, or if if ever grows up, really well.
Being a betting man, I'm not going to wager too much of my hard earned he will form the dream team with Gary Glen.

Further proof that Vlad really has lost his marbles. Pinilla must be the most expensive footballer on the planet in relation to cost per minute 'performing' on the pitch.

Cue another 'wrist injury' during pre-season and thus the cycle will start all over again. Can anyone spare me a quid for the gas meter - I can't take any more of this.

Another mind boggingly stupid piece of business by Vlad and Hearts...at a time when we are supposed to be cost cutting?!

I only pray he has been bought by Vlad so he can be sold a la Skacel... preferably before the new season starts.

Romanov obviously has a willing buyer in the wings to punt Pinilla at a tidy profit (ala Skacel).

Basically it looks like nobody has a clue how much Hearts WERE paying Pinilla in the last two years, how much Hearts paid Inter for the registration, how much Hearts are now paying Pinilla, whether Pinilla wants to stay or had no choice and whether Pinilla will be here in August or sold on.

Cracking investigative journalism.
24

GrahamL,

#21,22 - Must admit, I have difficulty believing there's many clubs out there that would wanting to sign up Pinilla. He's never settled at any club he's been at, and his behaviour while he's been at Hearts isn't exactly comforting. It's not that long ago that he, basically, said he couldn't be bothered playing for us and wanted to go home. Can't imagine many clubs willing to open the chequebook for him if thats his attitude.
Maybe a chilean side might be tempted to give him a shot, but would they be willing to pay enough for him? Buying Inter out will have cost Vlad a few bob.
And would they have bothered negotiating a performance related contract if he was going to get moved on in the next wee while?

Probably be a good deal if we could just punt him for a profit, but everything I can see is suggesting he's going to be a Hearts player next season. I'm just hoping that "player" means "bloke whos out on the pitch, running his @rse off and scoring goals", rather than "whiny ungrateful money grabbing permanently injured waste of space"...

Oh Great, What a cracking piece of news that is YIPEE, so we have just signed the mentally unstable one for another 3 years and we can parnter him up with mr clinically depressed elliott next season. i only hope that his wage structure will be £5 per week and the rest made up from win bonus and appearance fee's that should sort the crackpot out (he would be fighting his way onto the pitch next season).
26

Disco Drisco,

06/05/2008 13:14:02
I though Hearts were in the process of sorting out the finacial side of things.

This guys has made £624,000 of Hearts in the last two years (and another £624k from Milan).

That's £78,000 per game and £312,000 per goal.

Surely now was the time to cut your losses?

30

OJP,

06/05/2008 13:19:17
I think hearts are learning from some of the mistakes they have made in the past, when they paid big wages to players whose workrate and commitment tailed off (e.g. Jankauskas)

After the initial shenanigans, Pinilla has shown a willingness to come back to us and work to revive his career so we should give him more chances.

Is the contract actually with Hearts or is it another contract where Hearts pay the wages but when it is time for Pinilla to be sold on , we find that Vlad himself acually owns the contract therefore the "profit".

And - talking of selling players for profit - Should Kingston actually be sold , as I cannot remember the last time he played a full game and looked interested........He certainly wasn't last night.

One risky signing, after all he has "been through" and to give him a 3 year contract is very risky in my opinion. Has it in his game to be a player but only if the head is screwed on. Under a proper manager we might just get to see the real pinilla although i have my doubts about that.

Dont really know much about this guy, seems to be a nomad in fitba terms. There's a bit of footage on youtube but he only looks ordinary at best for a five figure a week kinda player. Wikipedia stats dont look too crashhot either, not that they are always reliable right enough.

Since signing for Inter, who he has never played for, btw, he has played for 6 teams in 5 years, amassed 51 club games and 21 internationals for Chile who rank 40th in the world, scoring 10 and 5 goals respectively.

So my question is this, why exactely do Hearts fans rate him as a good player? Is it really just cos he scored twice in 3 games for you? Is he really worth all this hassle?

Oh and why on earth is he gettin a big ol 3 year contract when yu're supposed to be cutting the dead wood out of the side. If he is indeed, and all things point to this, dead wood?

As for the others, you mean the players we loaned from Kaunas? I assumed victor was after some info on these shadowy "players not owned by hearts" which maybe wasn't quite as obvious. You know, like your startling revelation about Kingston. Or have you given up on that one now?

Think its time to wipe the slate clean for Pinilla, hopefully the new contract gives Hearts more protection against the risk of him not playing, but if and its a big if he gets his act together then he could make a real difference next season.

#61 Unfortunately, we're at the whim of the wilder speculators here. They can claim any player is signed to any club/agency they want, regardless of the lunacy of it all and just sit back with a smug grin and say "we'll find out when the accounts come out".
Personally, a mate of my mums manicurists sisters chaffeurs uncles ex-wifes ping pong partner reckons that Vlad secretly owns Lionel Messi's contract, so could be in for a £70m windfall come the summer.

#57 He looked good and genuinely exciting when he played, that's why. He's obviously skillful but temperamentally and physically unsuited to playing for a Scottish team IMO so strange to sign him. Must be a deal in the offing a la Skacel and Bednar as someone said- Vlad does trade in players remember and looks on them as commodities.

On the other hand, Mark Viduka had some "head" problems, and he turned out well. Hibs signed well-renowned wallflower and teatotaller George Best for a spell, not to mention Chic Charnely. Dziekanovski was a playboy and he was all right for Celtic. Gazza had his moments. There's space in football for the rapscallions. Who cares, so long as they perform when played, and Pinilla looked the part when he made a rare appearance.

I would've punted him personally as he is someone who will desert you in a battle - thats the football perspective but then again we have bought him cheap and sell him on at a profit then it makes business sense........would be really interesting to hear how much he is actually on and how that is made up of performance related bonuses. If its £12k for sitting on his erky I have my reservations

To compare and contrast, Hearts have been paying, allegedly, 6 grand a week for Pinilla. O'Brien at Hibs is on, allegedly, 5 grand a week. At least we got a couple of goals from Pinilla and gave Hibees something else to read and flap their gums about.

Just an accounting point fyi - money coming in wouldn't show up on a balance sheet, it would show (if anywhere) on the Profit & Loss statement. There would be an adjustment to fixed assets on the BS, perhaps impacting the revaluation reserve, but a BS is a 'snapshot' of a company's asset and liability position on a given date and thus does not show flows directly.

Pedantry I know, but if you're going to have a go at being a hoboconomist wind-up merchant at least get some basic knowledge.

Oh and find a new 'disguise'. Just a wee bit of advice for free there.

#1 If he scores 15 goals or more a season, money well spent, especially if we get 1m or so back for him down the line.

Aside from the fact that the article states performance-related pay and, in any case, it's likely he's been forced to take a pay cut after two years not playing, you could look at it this way - One year at 12,000 a week for about 500,000, 15 goals, sold for 1.5m = 1m profit. Worked with Bednar.

Or how about two years at 17,000 a week like Gordon (1.5m or so) sold for 9m. Profit of more than 7m. Or Skacel...Or Hartley... all of whom also provided value for money while playing and helped the team win something. Meanwhile I refer you back to Alan O'Brien who cost you 5,000 a week plus a transfer fee, and has zero resale value and has contributed nothing.

If read properly - I did not state that any have been sold in this manner though since you ask - Velicka and two of the lesser Lithuanians (including Barasa ?) were punted in this contracted type of way. The two "lesser" Liths for very small fees , Velicka for more.
My statement implied that there are a number of players about to possibly be sold that will bring in money to Vlad - not Hearts ......Makela , Goncalves , Miko etc (Though I do not believe the Miko sale to the Swedes)
Another example ? Who actually owns Kingston's contract ???? I genuinely don't know and would not care to bet on it.

Hearts only exist as a money-making venture for the Romanovs, hence the telling quote here is that they think Pinilla could still achieve a good return - not a quote from a manager saying that he could make a contribution to the team.

The problem is that the Romanov regime has been woefully inept in identifying players to sell on for a profit. Look at the players sold:

Skacel - Burley identified and signed him
Harltey - Levein signed him
Gordon - came through the youth ranks under Jeffries
Bednar - Burley identified and signed him

What about the big money Romanov signings? Beslija (£825,000), Makela (£500,000), Kingston (£500,000 and the only decent one) and now Pinilla?

The other main Romanov signings of course have been all the Lithuanians who are in the team regardless of ability or form, presumably to be sold on. But to who? Cowdenbeath??

Very happy we have kept Panilla! We have invested a lot of time and money into him and we are due a return. He looks like a quality player when fit. Hopefully his wages are based heavily on participation and goals scored. Panilla and Glen/Nade up front would be a decent front line. Hopefully we have got him a sports phycologist to help with his mental state!

He's a fragile temperament but he has the skills to grace a Hearts team. I'm really proud that we have stuck by him, as a depression sufferer I know it's all about confidence so we should get behind the lad, if he wants to stay, and give him encouragement. Too often we have hounded the talent because they don't do it every game.

It's time that we realised that talent is mercurial to use a press cliche, but glad that him and Larry are still here and we can build on them to make a great Hearts side. "Some need a cuddle and some need a rocket, maybe Frail can't do that to the players but well done Stevie for rescuing us from deep despair to just Hearts usual despair.

Only in football are there 17,000 managers every week, and one guy who actually makes the decisions. Frail has done well given the circumstances but he's not going to take us on.

New manager please, new stand please, and a new attitude. I cancelled my season ticket for this year and I won't be buying a new one right now, but a good manager, a retention of our good players, and an incident free pre-season might tempt me.

Don't believe, but hope.

Over to you Vlad

I would greatly like Pinilla to prove us all wrong and turn up next season with his head screwed on and a good run of injury free football. Remember the only times we saw him was when he was unfit and needed games. He still looked quality though.
I still reckon Vlad is astute business wise(even though he needs to wisen up with the punters)so he must have been given VERY strong reassurances from Pinilla or he would have booted him.We might - just might see the player we all hoped for - I am just not holding my breath. The get partially paid as you play clause could be a winner ..........not just for Pinilla but a couple of others that could roll their sleeves up a bit more. (See 8 or 9 from last night)

From what I can work out the club is allready looking to next season. Deadwood is going out, new performance related pay scheme in place and the better players have been given new contracts. Glen, Panilla etc. Yes I class Panilla as a better player. Injury has kept him out.

Young players being blooded, Ogilvie pulling the strings behind the scene, season ticket sales on par from last year, a more consistant team selection so those deserving a place are getting it.

Been a bad season guys but things are more than looking up.

The futures bright. ITS MAROON AND WHITE!!

Ahh the once so mighty Serg is here. Scotlands answer to wish you were here!

Whats wrong Serg?? You used to be such a usefull member on here? Allways one for answers to questions? Allways one for providing information? These days you simply provide laughs.

Your mask has slipped and its on the floor. No recovery now. You will allways be remembered as the idiot who thought he could get away with being Lithuanian but could not speak a word of their language.

Contrary to most of these posts I think this might be very good news. If he and Aguair can consistently perform to a high level next season, we might start to have the makings of a competitive team again next season.

None of this alters my strong views expressed in previous posts that no-one should be renewing their season tickets until a credible plan is announced by Romanov.
