Mirsad Beslija to grit teeth in 'cold wet Scotland' for return to Hearts

MIRSAD BESLIJA has confirmed his imminent return to Hearts from the Belgian side Sint- Truiden but admitted only gritting his teeth will enable him to complete the final year of his Tynecastle contract.
The Bosnian winger stressed that he and his family find life in Scotland difficult, citing the cold and rain as particularly unpleasant, although he expects to receive more game time next season following Hearts' recent trimming of their first-team squad.

Persistent injury problems prevented him imposing himself during his season-long loan at Sint-Truiden. The Belgian side have been relegated and the player is due to report back to Riccarton next month when pre-season training begins.

A club record £800,000 signing from Racing Genk in 2006, Beslija has appeared only 13 times for Hearts in two years and intends to move on when his £9000-a-week contract expires next summer. Until then, he claims living in Edinburgh will be an arduous task. "It's not an option for me to stay with Sint-Truiden in the second division. I'm going back to Scotland," he said. "I still have a one-year contract and I will serve it out.

"It's true that my family and I don't think living in Scotland is really nice. It's always cold there and it's often raining. In Genk, people are much friendlier. But everybody knows I have a very nice contract at Hearts. I have to grit my teeth and stay one more year.

"I think I will get more opportunities to play next season. Hearts will not play in Europe and have omitted some players from their squad. The situation over there is getting more normal now. After Scotland, I'll be going back to Bosnia or maybe to Croatia. I hope I'll be able to play some more years over there before I quit."

The 26-year-old feels relentless injuries prevented him showcasing his true potential with Sint-Truiden last season despite feeling more at home in Belgium. "I couldn't help Sint-Truiden because of some injuries and I regret this," he continued.

"At coming back to Belgium, I had great memories of my time in Genk and of living in this country.

"It was perfect. Therefore I had no doubts when Sint-Truiden asked me to come back to Belgium.

"It didn't work out. I was injured most of the time and couldn't play at my own strength. I couldn't help the team. I understand people at Staaien are disappointed because of this."

Meanwhile, Hearts were today credited with an interest in Gretna striker Mickael Buscher and Kilmarnock's Mehdi Taouil, with Buscher's agent claiming his client has been granted a trial at Riccarton.

Yeah, and Belgium is constantly bathed in glorious sunshine.

HATE this kind of attitude: "I still have a one-year contract and I will serve it out."

Really? That's awfully kind of you to EARN your £450k per annum salary!! You offer me that kind of money and i'll stand in Baghdad town centre wearing a stars and atripes top hat with a beacon on top.

Here's an idea. Why don't you agree to quit Hearts, with NO compensation paid, and see if you can get a better offer?

I can see this guy spending his last year constantly out due to various niggles and it will seriously get on my wick.

This is the kind of attitude that has almost killed this club and the likes of him MUST be told: "earn your wages or sod off" (he can pass that message onto Nade whilst he's at it)

Makes me sick.

GrahamL,

Aye. Welcome back Mirsad.
You hate Scotland, cos it's cold and wet. But you're going to do us the honour of pocketing £9k a week, since your just that much of a true profressional aren't you?
That's really big of you, honouring the contract you signed even though it's a bit chilly. Cheers. Bloody footballers, the rest of us have to get on with our jobs if it's cold what does he want? A f*cking medal??

Had a lot of sympathy for his treatment at Tynie - he's never really been given a chance. But whining about the weather in Edinburgh ain't going to ingratiate him with the fans is it?
4

Graham Rix ate my hamster,

As much as I agree with the sentiment, mate - I dont think there are many players in the modern game when earning good money will rip up their contract.

End of the day, he is a perfect example of some of the madness that has gone on at Hearts in recent years.

Pay a clubs record fee
Put him on big money
Dont play him

I hate to think of the money he has made at Hearts for one cross ball against United in return.

Another loyal Jambo signing returns to take the club to even MORE greatness than this years "Stars".
Must be re-assuring that he's SO, SO keen to join you all in times of trouble.......time the fans showed the the same degree of loyalty intit.
C'mon, get yer cheque books out, ...that famous yellow Lambo will be due an MOT soon....no point in slumming it in cauld wet Edinburgh (as I Marlin fish off Key West...Yes VIC..the REAL Key West!!)when you could've atayed in tropical Belgium.
Just think £800,000 to buy him and £936,000 in salary over two years means that you guys paid him about £135,000-ish PER GAME.........and you wonder whwre the money is going guys..........DUH !!!!
6

GrahamL,

In fact, given Vlads well publicised "freeze them out if they're not signing a new contract" policy, he's not even going to get a game next season after this statement is he?
Why not just send him somewhere sunny to work on his tan for a year at our expense?

Under a proper manager and with the correct attitude Beslija could have a fantastic final season with hearts, lets face it he has all of the attributes to be a success in the spl.

Beslija probably gets the feeling like the majority of the hearts support that next season could follow the path of the previous two: poor coaching, poor tactics, strange selections, strange substitutions- basically a complete waste of time. When faced working day in/ day out in an enviroment like that no wonder he only wants to collect a years salary and leave.

Hardly any games in two years - constant niggling injuries (just like Nade) - what is it with young professionals now a days - why cant they get fit?

Agree with many above, with an attitude like this he would be better not coming back, going home and living of the memory of being the fastest player in Belgium at the point we signed him - LOL - never saw him run past anyone in the SPL in the few games he played - he crossed that ball against Utd cause he was nackered even though it was the first half.

What an absolute loser Beslija is, fat, injury prone and no desire. He is just Pinilla with a bigger belly. Vlad's scouting system is trully awful. He has blown millions of pounds on wages for players that are duds, injury prone and hate being at Hearts. Beslija will not play for us next season even if he keeps himself fit.

You could not do worse in the transfer market if you deliberately set out to commit sabotage. Can you imagine where we would be if we allowed Craig Levein to hand out £10k a week wage packets - considering we have witnessed the worst Rangers and Celtic teams in living memory this season, I think we probably would have won the league.

The guy did show touches of quality, but the question to be answered is why pay that money out for a guy you don't intend to use. I don't like his attitude but I think he could have been treated better and given more chances. I would offer him half of his salary for next 12 months and tell him he is free to find another club.

I look back at the season and look at the players who I would give a pass mark for the season.

Banks, Berra, Jonnson, Karipidis, Driver and Palazeulos. Include Velisca too.

Disappointments are Stewart who started well, Chesney who I expected more from. Kingston who has been a let down since African Cup. Nade who has the ability but lazy.

I see a lot of promise in Glen, McGowan, Wallace and Thompson. Miko has improved and hope for more from him.

Screpis well will have to wait and see

Neilson steady enough but not my idea of a good full back. Goncalves he can do better, he is a bit erratic and a good coach will make an improvement.

I don't know who is to blame but Mole and Elliot I am afraid you don't cut it with me. Maybe the coaching staff has let you down.

Bit bemused by his assertion that Edinburgh is too cold and wet, but he would like to return to Bosnia. Having done a 6 month tour in Bosnia (over winter), I can confirm it is bloody freezing there, with the added bonus that at least 3 different ethnic groups would love to kill each other! I guess it must be tough missing out on all the fun in Bosnia to stay in Edinburgh on a measly 9k per week.....

Shame though, as he looked a player when he first came into the side, but has since failed to stay fit for more than about a day at a time by the sounds of things. We should probably be looking to boot this guy out the door, as we do have other options for the right wing. Unless of course he was mis-quoted, and what he actually meant to say was 'I really want to try hard next season at Hearts to help them win some trophies and to earn myself a new contract extension.'
33

Indie Rep Kid,

20/05/2008 12:49:49
#30 I know what you mean but I can't help it!

Seriously, why could he not just come out - and tell his agent to say this publicly - that he is looking forward to coming back, getting fit, fighting for his place and showing the fans what he is capable of.

If he had said THAT, followed by "but it's so cold in Scotland", as a joke, nobody would have minded.

34

The Hallucinist,

35

hibbyspurs,

20/05/2008 12:55:52
What a joker...

Best thing to do would be to release him and pay off the rest of his contract (this is most likely what he's hoping for anyway) or make him train with the youths and dont even give him a game for the reserves, then he'll maybe no find a lot of clubs from sunnier climes queing up to sign him.

Can any Hearts fan say they want an idiot like this playing for their club after the above statements? Didnt think so.

If he was a Hibs player I'd be infuraited by his comments and hope he never played for the club again.

The man obviously has no scruples and is nothing short of a mercenary although a mercenary generally has to do something to earn his wages, unlike this fool).

Makes you wonder just how stupidly much over the odds we're paying him, if he's happy to spend some of his best footballing years kicking around the reserves. Much like Makela's decision to stay and fight for his place in January. Too many players happy to sit around and take the money for nothing. As far as I'm concerned, pay up their contracts now and clear the space in the squad for players who give two hoots.Oh, and - y'know - get a proper manager and all that wishful thinking malarkey.

There's plenty of other things that make living in Edinburgh hellish... one of them is putting up with people like you who are taking 9 grand a week from a team that used to resemble Heart of Midlothian Football Club.

Weekly wages of some five of our "stars".
Total £57,000 a week ..........£3,000,000 per year FFS.

Tall has gone , but how much value for money have the others given us ? Larrye - sometimes.

The question is , would a decent manager have invested all that money on so little return ?
The budget for these five salaries in place over the past season , is more than many SPL clubs have for TWO seasons for their FULL squads.

Get a manager in Vlad....you know it makes sense

Why are we even looking at players at the moment if Frail is not going to be in charge next season. Everything is back to front at Hearts. : ) There has been talk of the game but it is only rumour at the moment and its not been mentioned where it would be played. But as was pointed out above, there is no way on earth Petrie would sanction a game unless Hibs are guaranteed to not make a loss.

No big deal anyway, we have already beaten Barca. And not in a friendly either.

You forgot to mention that Hibs got to the Semi final of that competition. We also got to the semi final of the Fairs (UEFA Cup) with needing an invite. Although Im sure the big team have done better than that yes?

Do we not say things like sometimes its not nice living in Scotland and it is cold and wet and the contract statement could that not be taken to mean I have a "good" contract and I will grit my teeth work hard and get into the team. Victorian, there may well be reasons why he has been welcomed back into the fold, maybe someone has had a word in his shell like and if he knuckles down there could be a lucrative move on the cards for him and another high earner is off the payroll.

Or maybe not eh.

Victorian, what is with you mate? Humiliated by Vlad yet again, and still you turn your guns on the Hibs? You're like an abused wife who shouts at their neighbour for asking if anything's wrong.

Seek help. Be strong. Seek help and repeat to self, "This is not my fault. I am a strong woman!"

Actually, neither of the above statements is necessarily true.

#80 why would there be wails of anguish from me if he is sold on, at no time did I say I rated him or thought he was worth keeping, all I said was that maybe what he said to the press was not exactly how it was translated. You must learn to read the posts properly.

Incidentally before you come back at me with more crap I never said that I did not rate him or that he was not worth keeping either. I have never at any time commented on his ability.

I thought that Hibs didn't want to play at Murrayfield when there was the Hearts vs Hibs semi-final as it was now viewed as more a Hearts ground?

He used to post some good stuff but recently he has changed all that, maybe its a different person posting under his name, I know someone tried that a couple of weeks ago.

Vic, we used to have some good posts between us, I am talking about 10-12 months ago, maybe Vlad has got to us mate and we have become a bit bitter and twisted.

We need to get some truth out of Vlad, get a Manager in place and also be told some of the future plans, that would help us get back to the good stuff.

Victorian,

Then why post this re: rumoured Hibs-Barca friendly?

"i'm sorry but i'm going to require full disclosure of all documentation and bank records to show a full audit trail for where the proceeds end from this match.

fair's fair."

What on earth are you going on about? After regressing to past glories, I think the Jambos are now projecting their inner-most fears onto Hibs. It's all very weird.

#2 Well there's not much more you can add to that! Spot on there and I agree with every word!

This club means a lot to a lot of people and the values of hard work, commitment and dedication are often bypassed by these prima donna! It's up to him to prove differently of course - and I hope he does!

What made Elvis, CG, Hartley and Skacel such crowd favourites? All of the above in abundance, plus plenty of skill and talent to go with it! Pinilla, Miko, Nade & co should take note what it means to be a Jambo!

Id get your facts right if I was you before spouting off.

The game you mention was 2-2 draw with the return leg finishing 1-1, Hibs went out on away goals

Then we Beat AEK Athens (I seem to recall them humping a "big team") at ER and went out to an odd goal AET.

Then we drew 0-0 with dnipro at ER.

Not a bad home European record over recent times then really eh?

Its the Vlad affect. He has slowly but surely squeezed all the positiveness and humour out of your average Jambo.

Now here's a thought, why is it when someone is off work sick long term they get Statutory Sick pay which is a percentage of there normal salary, why should Hearts not adopt this with the players on their books, maybe the players would want to play more often if their wages were cut.

#98 Lenny - I still have positivity in life it's just that I struggle to be positive about the Management of my club.
The thing is I started "downing" Vlad a long time ago and then there were few people who supported me, I think the whole thing has reversed now and there are very few supporters.

The support for the team has never wained though. But it is a difficult situation we are in.

Newcastle Jambo,

Another dreaful signing by clues numpties who don't know what they're doing. An injury prone player with very limited ability, ill-suited to the Scottish game and with no desire or motivation to even live in Scotland let alone play football there. And for £800k and £9k per week on a 3.5 year deal, at a time when the club already had several right wingers (using the term very loosely in the case of MikoMouseis). Clowns.

#105 GrahamL is that not the case though and I know you wont find it funny as it was said by a Hobo but it is true nonetheless.

We all used to have some good banter before but it appears that we are now all twisted up and that has been caused by the Madman's running or otherwise of our club.

Two seasons ago second in the league, Cup Final and CL place and many promises of more to come, today 8th in the league debt doubled no communication at all and the Chairman making an ar*e of us at the AGM.

Beslija - just another example of a player being signed without anyone actually having watched him in the flesh - so to speak.

His attitude is terrible, but maybe he is just very bitter about being kept out the team by Miko.

It all seems rather negative, but just imagine if Beslija, Pinilla, Nade and Kingston all played as well as they can do week in week out, we might enjoy watching Hearts again - nah! it's not likely to happen unless we get a decent manager to sort them out, as it stands it still looks like Frail. Nooooooo!
112

Johnny Jambo,

20/05/2008 15:27:37
#112 JT1874 - very good point mate, we criticise these players all too often and at the end of the day they probably don't want to be at Hearts, somehow Vlad brings them in to Hearts and they don't put that much effort in.

I have always said that the Management of the Club needs sorted out before we can improve.

I don't particularly want to be working here either.

MY management is a shambles.

MY future is uncertain.

But I (like thousands of others) just have to get on with it.

It sickens me that I have more professional pride than a guy with real talent being paid £450k per year.

Sorry Hearts, you're all out of excuses.

#114 IRK - I was not making excuses mate, these players are not pulling their weight and we know it.

I would just like to ask about the situation in your case, you have sited, if all those situations are applicable to you, I have to ask why you are there then, is it because you have a "Nice Contract" and get paid anyway, or is it because you havent got the get up and go to get out of there. Dont give me the cr*p about professional pride, if you dont want to be there you cant be giving 100%. You don't have to "get on with it" as you put it, you can do something about it????

When i'm not wasting my time on here, I give 110%!Yes, I need to 'do something' about it so I am working hard, adding to my skills and making sure I am noticed.....maybe Beslija should try that?

Anyway, Beslija is paid 3 times as much as Gordon Brown. I think I can expect some sort of self-motivation to get up in the morning and do his job, no?

117

Roscoe P Coltrane,

20/05/2008 16:16:56
Goodness.

If Big Gordo only gets paid a third of what a third-rate footballer gets, no wonder he sold out his principles!
118

Johnny Jambo,

20/05/2008 16:18:44
#117 wasting your time on here (your words not mine) means that you are not giving 110% because some of your valuable work time is being used up doing it.

If you need to do something about it then why don't you.

Yes I agree with you that we should expect some self motivation from players who are paid some obscene salaries, but lets be honest, we don't get it and certainly at Tynecastle, there are players, a few of them, who are not interested in giving anything back for their wages, hence the fact that we are in 8th place in the league.

However being fair to the players, they have no guidance, theysee nothing from Management which motivates them so something must change. Or am I wrong.
