Mixu: I won't sign up duds for Hibs

Published Date: 08 July 2008
MIXU PAATELAINEN vowed today that he won't be pressured into buying players who aren't up to the job just to appease fans desperate to see new faces at Hibs.
The Easter Road manager has only signed David van Zanten from St Mirren this summer and admitted that he has missed out on others over the last few weeks.

He now has just a few weeks left before the start of the new SPL campaign to add to his squad and, following Sunday's defeat to Elfsborg in the InterToto Cup, supporters have been calling for the club to splash out to replace the likes of Guillaume Beuzelin, who signed for Coventry last month.

However, Paatelainen stressed that there will be no panic buying at the club and that he will only sign players if he is certain they will raise the standards.

He said: "I want, just as much as everyone else, to be able to come out and announce new signings and we are continuing to work on bringing players in. But I don't want to be signing players who I don't think are up to the job just for the sake of it.

"There are plenty of players out there who are available but I will only bring players to Easter Road who I think can add something to the team.

"We have had a couple of setbacks with players that we have targeted already but there are others that we are working on at the moment.

"We have a wage structure at the club and we have to stick to that and it is important that the deal is right for Hibs, for the players we are targeting – and indeed for the club that they are currently playing for. It might take us a little time but hopefully we will get the players we want."

Meanwhile Paatelainen faces a wait to find out if captain Rob Jones will be available for this weekend's away leg against Elfsborg.

The big defender went over on his ankle in the first half at Easter Road on Sunday afternoon and the joint is still swollen. And Paatelainen insists he won't risk Jones, particularly with the Swedish side playing on an artificial surface.

He added: "On the injury front we have a concern about Rob Jones after he went over on his ankle, but we are hoping that it is nothing too serious. We will have to wait and see though because we are still waiting for the swelling to go down before we can assess it properly.

"One thing that is certain though is that I won't risk him unless he is 100 per cent because Elfsborg play on an artificial surface and that can lead to some problems with injuries.

"It's important at this stage of the season that we sustain as few injuries as possible, although now that we are in competitive action again and there is a real pace and tempo to games, we are obviously going to get a few."

Hibs travel to Sweden on the back of a two-goal deficit, but Paatelainen felt that there were still plenty of positives to be taken from what was their first competitive action of the season.

"Having looked back at the tape, I think that there were lots of positives to take from the game, although there are lots of areas that we would also be looking to improve on," said Paatelainen.

"In the first half there were plenty of good moves, but our legs went in the final half hour, which I think is understandable given the stage we are at in our pre-season schedule."

Uh oh! Is Mixu a Petrie clone? I hope not. This is a worrying turn of events... NOT!

I fear for this season, and its still weeks away.

Hibernia,

Mixu please sign a decent midfielder and get Kerr punted as far away from Easter Road as possible. Thank you.

hibbyspurs,

Sighs...

The old "wage structure" line trotted out again...

A word to the wise for Rod & Mixu..... 6th place was unacceptable last season and the current state of the playing squad as far as I'm concerned is not up to finishing 3rd....

Take your time by all means Mixu to get "the right players" but please dont take too long or we could all be in for a long season.....

#2 Hibernia

I suspect that it will be difficult to dislodge Kerr from Easter Road. If my memory serves me correctly, he signed a 3 year contract 12 months ago and the unenthusiastic way he plays means he is just there for his salary. Talk from him 12 months ago was of 'forcing' his way back into the Scotland squad. Really, based on his performances who would want him other than an SFL club.
5

Neutral Observer,

08/07/2008 12:11:54
Hibs definately need to find better players than Zarabi, Canning, Rankin and Nish. If those players were stopgap signings in the January transfer window (Canning excepted) then please take your time Mixu to bring in better players this window.

Who has he been knocked back on so far? Johansson maybe?
6

Eighteen Seventy-Four,

More Rank and Nish please Mixu.
7

Hibernianinc,

08/07/2008 12:20:07
To me, Mixu is talking sense.

I'm happy with the wage structure. Let's not forget this allowed us to spend over £1m on buying players last year - somethinge we've not done since McLeish.

We need new players, and we need some of the dross to move on. I'm not panicing yet (and we're at least a million miles better off than the Fringe show going on in darkest gorgie).

But then, I'm a 'Happy Clapper' so what do I know.
8

Hibernia,

#4 Neutral........I have a cunning plan, we could ambush Kerr after a match, lets face it he doesnt run that fast at the best of times. Bundle him into a car and then drop him off somewhere like Tommy Craigs house and hope he cant find his way back to ER.
9

Hibernia,

08/07/2008 12:23:30
#6 remind us all on the Hibs thread of the World Cup Superstars that Vlad signed for Hearts?

Nade? Panilla? Barasa? Beslija? and the list could go on and on and on.
10

We love fitba,

google! 08/07/2008 12:25:32
The best "signing" Hibs could make this summer would be to hang on to Fletcher for another season.

It's inevitable that he will move away at some point but I don't see why it has to be right now. He signed a new deal recently and Hibs desperately need his quality.
11

The Hallucinist,

08/07/2008 12:26:50
Do you think hibs would be more successful if they had no manager??

Remember, hibs 0-2 Swedish Shepherds XI

9. Id be more concerend at Mixu's signing targets than whats going on at the big team.

Gretna, Inverness and St Mirren players, next stop the Bells Challenge cup.
13

Al Berkid,

Edinburgh 08/07/2008 12:32:00
Too late Mixu - we need a better standard of player than Rankin and Canning which brings into question Donald Parks eye for a player as surely he recommended those two.

Minimum of 3 players to go straight into first eleven.
Surely there must have been targets in mind for months now?? Or are we holding off till we know if Flecther is going as that will enable us to go after better?

Dont start on "his hands are tied because of wage restrictions", Motherwell and United seem to have found decent players for well within our budget.

Still it could be worse....Jambos!!!!!

The Hallucinist, I know you atre on the wind up but try a little bit of research. Two of the team that played Sunday were a part of Sweden's Euro 08 squad, you know the team that were unlucky to lose to eventual winners Spain. so to write of anyone as shepherds is like describing Hearts players as gypsys. Untrue and offensive.
Ther are so many other accurate ways to slag off Hibs(but you won't get any help from me.

We lost a game of football, you've just had confirmation Vlad is in for the long haul. who is the happier do you think given his progressive interference having an inverse effect on the league position?

So what, 2 weeks back training, we got beat in our first game of pre season against a team half way through their season, 13 games unbeaten and only 3 goals conceded, so what is your point? Who do you guys play in your first pre season game? we will all be waiting with baited breaths for Nade & Elliot to score 3 each in a 10 - 0 score line against a team that is (or will be) of far superior quality than Elfsburg.
What a bunch of idiotic hearts fools posting idiotic comments on a trully crepe web site.

What would be interesting would be some sort of indication of potential signings... Usually by this point in the close season the runour mills in overdrive & whilst most of it is p1sh at least it gets you thinking.

We've had the usual ones trotted out but it would nice to see some activity sooner rather than later.

I hope that we're playing a shrewd game here and really playing our cards close to our chest and sign some pleasant surprises which when unveieled will become apparent that if the club had gone shouting its mouth off that another club from the say the Championship would have nipped in and had away from under our noses.

Thats my theory anyway.... Just hope theres a grain of truth in it.
40

Dragonlord,

Mixu won't sign duds. There are enough there already.
41

Vincent Vega,

This was on football rumours website, although there is more chance in Vlad letting a manager pick the team than this happening.

"Hibernian are on the verge of securing a stunning deal to secure the services of Derek Riordan and Scott Brown on season long loan deals from Celtic as both look to engineer moves away from "Paradise". Mixu Paatelainen is also looking to persuade old Finnish pals Jari Litmanen and Sami Hyypia to Easter Road to see out their careers. Both are giving it serious consideration."

I have also heard Hibs are trying to sign Riordan, Keenan, Yantorno, O'Dea, Johannson & Livesey how much truth there is in these, who knows.
42

Neutral Observer,

08/07/2008 13:57:04
The problem for Paatelainen and Park is thet they don't have the same experience of the recent English scene as the likes of Mowbray and Venus. There are lots of hungry young players playing at EPL and Championship clubs who are frustrated at the lack of opportunities there due to the high percentage of foreign players brought in for big money. Mowbray could tap into that market and brought Hibs the likes of Murphy and Shiels. The current Hibs management are bring in 2nd rate Scottish players from Gretna, Inverness and Kilmarnock. It is yet to be proved whether Mixu can spot a good young player. Maybe he would be better introducing the good young players that are already there in the reserves and under 19's.
43

Vinnie123,

Kirknewton 08/07/2008 14:00:42
What a joke Mixu.
Every player with the exception of Murray that he has signed are duds.

Our record in the transfer market is shocking.
The decent players we have have either came through the youth system or was bought by Mowbray.
44

Neutral Observer,

08/07/2008 14:04:02
#41 Rumours

These rumours are mostly nonsense I suspect. Celtic are reputed to be paying Scott Brown £24,000 per week - do we seriously believe thay would then loan him out to Hibs for a season. No, they will keep him and play him. His family had personal problems in the last half of last season and his form dipped. Watch him go this coming season for Scotland and Celtic. I think that Jari Litmanen has retired and I also think that Hyppia has signed for another season at Liverpool.

Only likely signing there is Yantorno - another Gretna star.
45

Vinnie123,

Kirknewton 08/07/2008 14:09:12
We would be better off signing no one.

Lets be honest Mixu has signed Van Zanten, Rankin and Nish.

Better of with McCann, Stevenson and Campbell.

Give the young players a chance.
Save some wages on poor second rate players, and pay the decent players a decent wage.

The money he will waste on more duds would be better spent on giving Deano a new and improved contract.

As far as i am concerned Mixu the jury is out on you.

46

Dragonlord,

08/07/2008 14:12:26
44# Rearend to hubs is a non starter. Not least due to wages. Celtic won't let him play in Scotland and his reluctance to move away will be his downfall. He was never a great player anyway and relied on G o'C to do the hard work for him. As for Yantorno, it was rumoured Hearts had placed him at Gretna to work him up for the move to Hearts. A move I would have welcomed. However his injury ruined that and Hibs have signed a donkey.
47

Hibernia,

08/07/2008 14:23:13
#46 Riordan can sign a pre contract with anyone he likes in 6 months or so and Smeltic will get pleasantly shafted for a fee which is nice.

As for saying he was talented your having a laugh, Riordan was one of the few modern day players I have seen that equally comfortable kicking the ball with his left as he was his right.

As for the Yantorno part Hibs havent signed him yet. You seem to have pretty rubbish sources or are just gash at typing either that or youve been hanging around Greggs too much this summer.
48

Lenny,

08/07/2008 14:23:28
# 46 Dragonlord

Riordon never a great player? Either you know nothing about football or you are letting your Jambo supporting influence your judgement. He is the most natural finisher I have ever seen at the club.

The guy scored over 20 goals a season. And not just for one season either. Mostly from midfield!!! How many Hearts players in the past 20 year or so have averaged over 20 a season? I can only think of Robbo.

And that is complete nonsense re Yantorno. You are trying to say that Hearts bought him and sent him to Grenta, but secretly!?!?
49

How is it that in 1991 just after nearly going into administration we managed to fork out £500k for Keith Wright - a signing that lifted the whole club but now we are reliant on Ebenezer Petrie's bargains?
Couple of questions - why is everyone on these threads so anti Nish? The guy is a good honest pro, a Hibee and a good partner for Fletcher. If you want to define dud look no further than every Manager's blue eyed boy Morais.
Does anyone know how many season or Barca tickets have been sold. I have heard 10k for seasons
