TICKET-LESS Rangers fans hoping to find a way into the UEFA Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg were dealt a fresh blow today when the Russian club claimed they would taking up their full allocation.
A scramble for tickets for the May 14 final at the City of Manchester Stadium began immediately after Nacho Novo scored the penalty shoot-out winner for the Light Blues against Fiorentina in Florence last Thursday.

Due mainly to political reasons,
there has been no tradition of Russian football fans travelling outside their country to follow their clubs.

When Rangers beat Moscow Dynamo in the European Cup Winners' Cup final in the Nou Camp in 1972, there were only a handful of Dynamo supporters in the stadium.

Despite a relaxation in rules surrounding travel in and out of Russia in recent years, Zenit manager Dick Advocaat feared there might only be around 5,000 Zenit fans making the journey to England.

Consequently, many Rangers fans hoped that the St Petersburg club might send back part of their 13,000 allocation to be reissued.

However, a spokesman for Zenit told PA Sport that all their tickets will be snapped up.

The spokesman said: "We will sell all our tickets, there is no doubt about that.

"We had 3,000 in Munich for the first leg of our semi-final against Bayern and many more want to go to Manchester.

"We have had our first allocation of 7,000 tickets from UEFA and they are gone.

"We are waiting for the second part of 4,000 and I have no doubt that they will be sold too, as will the rest we get.

"Our fans will have no problems travelling to Britain.

"They do need a special passport that allows them to leave the country but many of our 16,000 season-ticket holders and our other fans, already have it.

"They also need a visa to travel to Britain but the British Consulate will open offices in St Petersburg and Moscow to allow those to be rushed through."

Zenit will be appearing in their first European final and it appears that the Russian club's fans are equally as keen to get to Manchester as their Ibrox counterparts.

The spokesman continued: "Some of our fans will be flying from St Petersburg to Riga, then to Manchester.

"Others will be flying from St Petersburg to London then getting a train to Manchester.

"The average salary for our fans is around 500 euro (£390) per month and some of the air fares are 600 euro (£470) so it is an expensive trip and it means that not many of our young fans will be able to afford it.

"But we will have a very enthusiastic support in Manchester."

Good luck with the search lads.

So the Scotsman closes one set of comments then opens up another one. Hmm.

Bad news about the tickets but that's the way it goes. Any Bears hunting outside official channels should look out for scams e.g. fake ebay emails and scams which use Western Union in an inappropriate way.

Touts will be selling tickets at £500 a throw in Manchester.

Personally I'd advise all ticketless Rangers fans to stay at home - there is no point in getting caught up inthe after match riot is there?

No Gers fans arrested in Barcelona this season. Two Celtic fans arrested, one for hitting a police officer and the other for beating up a taxi driver, 60 other Celtic fans fined for such things as soliciting prostitutes. Are you sure you don't want the thread closed?

Teary / James

Here's a refelctive piece from the Times on Rangers behaviour that night - check out Rangers manager Waddells comments.

-------------------------------------------------------

The problem was that a significant cross-section of them were drunk and had behaved abominably – and frightened the local people – in the build-up to the final. And it was this fact which, to this day, remains in my mind as the cause of the most startling and intemperate outburst I have ever come across by a football manager.

Willie Waddell was the Rangers manager back then. Apparently, he was a good man, though he could be sour and grumpy – or “crabbit” as the old Scottish word has it. Waddell was also given to fits of snobbery, in that strange, quite unwarranted way of many old working-class Scots. He openly detested what he viewed as the unsavoury ways of the sort of underclass that followed football (Waddell himself wouldn’t have used the term “underclass” but it was often his clear inference).

In the aftermath of the 1972 Nou Camp riot, while Rangers were busy pleading with Uefa not to come down heavily on the club, Waddell was still beside himself with rage at his club’s supporters when he aimed the following piece of invective at them: “It is to these tikes, hooligans, louts and drunkards that I pinpoint my message – it is because of your gutter-rat behaviour that we [Rangers FC] are being publicly tarred and feathered . . . ”

From today’s perspective, this is eyewatering stuff. Note also, amid all his other opprobrium, Waddell’s pejorative use of such words as “tikes” and “gutter-rat”, clear evidence of the sort of snobbery to which I referred. And can anyone today ever imagine a Rangers manager brazenly using such language? Imagine Walter Smith coming away with this “tikes” and “gutter-rat” stuff: it would be the end of the world, the phone-ins and websites would be in meltdown.

Were you at both Rapid Vienna games in the UK, Tim?

As for Barcelona 1972, whatever Waddell's emotional comments at the time, the trouble was caused by a police over-reaction to fans coming on the pitch to celebrate - as was very common in those days.

There was a little over-reaction I agree - but Spanish police had seen these same Rangers fans, intimidate the local community, urinate on the steps of their great cathedral, and generally create a public nuisance in the town during the day - naturally they were wound up.

After the game the Rangers fans did behave despicably, even Rangers players such as DJ and Doddie and Jardine told the horror stories afterwards.

#26,

Funny then that Rangers were invited back to Barcelona shortly afterwards for a prestigious pre-season tournament. Indeed many locals appreciated the Rangers fans standing up to Franco's police goons.

As for Rapid Vienna, Celtic were made to replay the match because their fans threw bottles and other missiles at the Rapid players. Then they were ordered to play behind closed doors after their fans assaulted Rapid players at the replayed game.

We can also move onto various other aspects of Celtic fans' behaviour if you really want to, such as battling with Spanish police at Vigo airport, forcing an airliner into an emergency landing, various other instances of missile-throwing, various other assaults on opposition players (including the man whoo is now your manager!), pelting Mark Walters with bananas, stabbing each other in the pie queue at Firhill, various raids on the homes of players, referees, etc.....

Not many clubs can have been ordered to replay a game by UEFA beacuse of hooliganism then have to be punished again by UEFA because of more fan violence at the replayed game. Do you know of any?
39

Tim_MallÔy,

05/05/2008 16:40:41
Teary

Rapid Vienna panned out like this.

Celtic scored and Rapid complained to the linesman that Tommy Burns kicked the ball out of the keepers hands.

A few bottles were thrown from the jungle. No Rapid player was hit by a missile. However a Rapid player did emerge from Parkhead with a huge bandage on his head - no wound or injury was ever proven.

The tie was over and Celtic were through. Then Rapid appealed. Incredibly a replay was ordered and it had to be over 200 miles from Celtic Park - though still no injury to any Rapid player was proved.

The leg was played and Rapid scored. A few Celtic fans invaded the pitch when Rapid scored and the scorer attacked - but again no Rapid player was injured.

It was sad that frustration at being cheated caused a few emotional hooligans to react the way they did.

Now compare that with thousands of drunken Rangers fans going full blooded with the spanish police force right in the middle of Europe's biggest sporting venue.

You admit yourself bottles were thrown. Other missiles such as coins were thrown too. Whether they hit or missed, that was the hooliganism.

As for the game in Manchester, the Rapid players really were assaulted - one got kicked full-on in the groin for example.

As for Barcelona 72, I've already covered that.

I'm not trying to pretend that all Rangers fans are angels but Celtic fans have plenty to answer for too.

Let's move on as this will just become tit for tat with RAU the dullard chucking in abusive comments left right and centre to satisfy his rage at being banged up 23 hours a day.

Bottom line is this. Is it not better for RFC to put on their own show at Ibrox on the night rather than tens of thousands going to a city where they are unwelcome.

Two things.

Brian good afternoon,

Yes I realise several threads have been closed and yes I admit some of the culprits are Celtic fans.

55

Daillyman,

05/05/2008 17:14:55
James as said previously in 72 the Gers support wrongly invaded the park before the final whistle. A mistake.

Spanish police from the early days of British clubs playing ties there have been pretty hard on visiting supporters, and they have a tendency to swing first as questions on their conduct will not be asked by government officials.

In contrast when the Celtic beat Inter to win the EC. and the Celtic support invaded the parkat the final whistle the police in Lisbon handled it correctly and stood back.
56

Tim_MallÔy,

05/05/2008 17:18:35
69

Brian I think it was the Rangers fans anti-catholic behaviour in the lead up to the game that had the spanish police wound up. Celtic have always had a great reputation in Spain - ever since wee Jinky thrilled 120,000 spaniards in the Bernabau at Di Stefano's testimonial.

75 That's a funny one too, you're on form today. Talking of fans, I remember going to Firhill with a couple of mates who were Thistle fans. Throughout the whole game (which was pretty dire too) this old boy was giving Thistle players dog's abuse. The old guy left with 5 minutes to go and was shouting at the director's box "I'll never be back here"

I said to my mate "looks like the jags have lost another fan"

My mate replied "Naw that's auld Jimmy McLaren he does that every week"

These are all "if's and but's"

But to be the first Scottish team to win a European competition in 36 years would be fantastic.

I think if you asked the players would they prefer a European winners medal or an SPL league winners medal, if they were honest they would take the European medal, how many chances do you get to win one.

With the league medal, on average they have a 50/50 chance every year to win it.

I believe it will go down to the final day, one way or the other. Given that we were seemingly dead and buried a few weeks ago, I don't think we can ask for more than that.

James they must be a decent team to get to the final.

They certainly hammered Bayern at home. Aberdeen actually ran Bayern ragged for 45 minutes in their tie at home, who knows what will happen. The tournaments top scorer is banned from playing. Hoping the Gers win it 1-0, but not on penalties the heart can't take much more of these shoot outs.

16,000 Zenit fans ...jolly good...and perhaps a few more besides, some, curiously, with Glaswegian accents me thinks !

If they can put 4 past Bayern without reply, and umm, Rangers cannae buy a goal at the moment, on paper it reads as though it will be a pretty one sided affair.

By the time it comes along, Rangers could be all but out of the league race, and becoming increasingly twitchy about the prospect of QoS getting the rub of the green in the SC.

That would leave them with the CIS , and me quadrupled up on the floor laughing.

Celtic took the following year's CL winners to extra time , going down 3v2 to a late goal after Balde had been given his marching orders.

What if Rangers get tanked 6v1, and lose in the SC to QoS ? To my mind, such a humiliating end to the season would make Celtic's 2003 duck look positively heroic, even without the CIS.

It really is embarrasing to admit that our country is based in such neanderthal mentalities.

Rangers have never shown the slightest inclination to help other teams when they were in a similar situation. Walter should really stop moaning and just get on with it.
Besides, if the Uefa really is far more important than the league, there's nothing stopping rangers saying 'feck it, we'll just rest our best players till the Uefa final, and to hell with the SPL.'

I don't think there are many RFC players that would enhance Celtic - maybe Cuellar, maybe Novo, maybe Whittaker, possibly Mad Dog McGregor but all would not be guaranteed a first team place - they'd be fringe players.

I'd take Cuellar over McManus, but , having been one of his greatest critics in the past, Caldwell is beginning to show a lot of quality, not just defencively, but turning defence into attack.

Cuellar is top drawer defensively, but not so clever with forward movement, and Caldwell almost matches him defensively on current form, but gives a lot more bringing the ball forward.

Good to find an open thread, although there does seem to be a fair amount of red on it. Without knowing the guilty parties, it does seem a shame at a time when The Scotsman is limiting the amount of OF stories available, that there still seem to be a number of posters with such a confrontational and often abusive attitude.

Anyway, great end to the season beckons. Rangers look to me like slight underdogs in the two big trophy chases, although even winning the two domestic cups and coming mighty close in the SPL and UEFA would seem like a great season to me. Like all on the RFC side, I'd love an extra week or so to lighten our load, but it ain't gonna happen, and let's be honest, the damage was done months ago with various postponements for myriad reasons, only one of which to my recollection was at Rangers request.

So, it's 7 cup finals, starting against Motherwell at Ibrox on Wednesday. The best we can hope for, in the SPL, is that we win our next 4 matches and that Celtic don't beat Hibs. That would render our last game against Aberdeen meaningless, and we could rest every significant player ahead of the Scottish Cup Final.

There does seem to be a number of desperate posters on both sides who can almost smell glory, but have that niggling fear that it could all go horribly wrong. It's putting them on edge, and turning some of their posts a little nasty. Personally, I'd choose every season to end like this. Romping to an easy title is just a little too boring for me, although, as a Rangers fan, I have some difficulty accurately recalling the feeling.

Increase the Peace.

James.

I think we all need to see through the nonsense with this season extension.

Rangers certainly aren't worried about Queen Of The South, so the only reason to seek an extension is to increase their chances of winning the SPL by spreading their remaining fixtures out a little more.

From a Celtic viewpoint, the "integrity" of the SPL is also a smokescreen. The SPL never had much to start with. Celtic want Rangers fixtures compressed for one simple reason, to maximise CFC's chances of retaining the title. Let nobody be fooled, and I can't blame either side for taking the stance that they have.

Two things I will say, though. Giving RFC a free week prior to the UEFA Final would have been right and proper, IMO. The authorities in a small and relatively unsuccessful country really should try to assist one of their teams when they reach the Final of the second most important tournament in European club football, particularly when no club from our country has ever won it before.

Secondly, if ever there was a case for a season extension to help a club, then this is it, given that Rangers will play more competitive games this season than any Scottish club ever has. However, it isn't about to happen now, so RFC just have to get on with it. Glory will just seem all the sweeter if it is still achieved.

"The literacy genius of the Irish is long and well established, and is beyond the scorn of ignorant Scotsmen"
He taunts us then he is given a fact and he can`t take it ! I will not tolerate idiots like him running down Scotland ! Sorry but I have to say it !

for "magnet" see plonker ,celtic minded the problem with a magnet is it attracts the same kind of thing

number 6 ,i love the way ur mob go on about spelling punctuation etc ,the most esteemed rangers poster"bemused exile" who claims to be an author picked me up last nite on my spelling and to his horror in that post he made the most glaring of mistakes writing i quote "i would advise anybody not to hold his breath " when to be politicaly and gramaticaly and jist to make proper sense should have wrote "i would advise anybody to hold his or her breath" u see number 6 even famous authors like bemused can get it wrong so stop and think, now i admit i can,t spell but comunicate i can, GET MY DRIFT

357 Tim. what exactly is your purpose asking such a daft question?
271

Boberto,

06/05/2008 06:57:13
A dangerous route to go down Tim (357), especially based on what was told as a humorous anecdote. Far more serious things have been done elsewhere. Some Celtic fans do talk a load of drivel. They seem to have no sense of embarrassment.

So the panic has begun over at snake Mountain....

"We haven't asked for an extension"..."and we will not be asking for one"

..2 defeats to the champions and a draw at Hibs later....

And we now have Wattie giving it both barrels at how the SPL, the SFA, all of Scottish football, Scottish society and anyone who is not Rangers minded is....wait for it....AGAINST THEM...for not providing them with every possible advantage they need to win the league?!

We now have Rangers asking for the United game to be shelved....

They can always bring it forward to the Friday night....to give them an extra 24 hours for the Zenit game!

What chance the dark arts will now be working overtime at Snake mountain.....

A possible bust pipe to flood the pitch maybe?
Floodlight failure on the night of the game perhaps?

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest!
