Published Date: 20 August 2008
HIBS were handed a massive boost today with the news that Moroccan playmaker Merouane Zemmama is in line to be back in action within a month.
The midfield star has been sidelined since breaking a bone in his right foot, an injury which forced him to miss the final matches of last season and the opening games of the new campaign.

But Zemmama is now back in full training with Mixu Paatelainen's squad, the Hibs boss believing he could return after next month's international break for Scotland's first World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Iceland, with the visit of Dundee United on September 13 ringed as a possible comeback date.

And today Paatelainen admitted he couldn't wait to see Zouma return to action. He said: "It will be absolutely fantastic to get him back because he is a terrific football player. You always miss quality players and Merouane certainly falls into that category. He's someone who makes things happen and I have to say I can't wait to see him back."

Zemmama's return will further heighten competition for a midfield berth in Paatelainen's side with a rejuvenated Alan O'Brien adding to the summer arrivals of Steven Thicot and Joe Keenan to fight it out with the likes of John Rankin, Ian Murray, Dean Shiels, Lewis Stevenson and Ross Chisholm for a jersey.

Paatelainen said: "It will be a big headache for me but a welcome one.

That's what I always wanted and I've been given the opportunity to build the squad and that will continue but now it is a matter of making sure the boys gel together as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen today admitted he was becoming increasingly frustrated at the time it is taking to obtain international clearance for French star Steve Pinau following his arrival on a season-long loan deal from Italian club Genoa.

Hibs asked the SFA to obtain the necessary paperwork from their Italian counterparts almost a fortnight ago but, as yet, it has not been completed.

Paatelainen was hoping he'd get the green light today but admitted the matter was out of the club's hands.

He said: "It is not our fault, the issue has to be dealt with between the national associations.

"There's been daily contact between ourselves and the SFA and I am sure they've been doing likewise with the Italians. We should finally get the clearance today but we'll have to wait and see.

"It's taken a long time, longer than usual and it does become frustrating. There's no point in having a player if he is not able to play."

Paatelainen had hoped to include Pinau in his squad for last weekend's win over Falkirk and provided he's given the go-ahead in time, the 20-year-old will make the trip to Inverness on Saturday.

He said: "Steve is not fully match fit but he'll only get that through playing games. He can't even take part in reserve matches at the moment. I can't understand that because trialists can play in these games and yet Steve isn't allowed to do so."

Hibs goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay missed out on the chance of an Olympic gold medal as Belgium were beaten 4-1 by Nigeria in the semi-final as the Easter Road star was again confined to the bench.

Belgium will now face Brazil, who beat them 1-0 in their opening match in the competition, to decide the bronze medals on Friday while Argentina, having beaten their South American neighbours 3-0, will fight it out with the African nation for gold the following day.

With all the competition in there, Kerr better not get a look in!!

Whats the deal with the rumour Gow is destined for Easter road, that would be a good aqusition!

If Pinau had been signed by the old firm bigots his international clearence would be completed by now. Typical SFA. It does not hinder the flute blowers or the tattie farmers so who cares.

Good player but is injured more often than not. Also goes into hiding during the winter months.

OOOOH Zemmama!

Sometimes tries a bit too much, but the type of player that you pay to watch. Cannae wait to see him back playing either, was really coming on to a game before his injury.

Private Pike,

#8 "Sometimes he tries a bit too much".
"Type of player you pay to watch" "Really coming on to a game". Too many cliches but but Roscoe is the type of poster who's worth the admission money alone .

Lenny,

Great news, one of our best players imo. With Zouma back, O'Brian actually hitting form and Shiels its starting to look like we have a strong midfield.

We should now make moves to get Banks. A good solid keeper who could only help our young keepers. If Hearts dont want him...
11

Rolland,

20/08/2008 13:55:53
#10 Sorry Lenny old mate and mucka, I doubt you could meet Bankies wages. Would be a good improvement on your current lot, but he has looked shakey this season so far.
12

Lenny,

20/08/2008 14:04:05
Hey Rolland dude, how are you? You may be right re wages. Although at his age he may take a cut to play some last top flight football.

He may have looked shakey but we have McNiell and Zibby!!!! (I like big Maka)

Reading back, maybe a cliche in there, but its true in this instance.

I'd prefer to have Benji back in Edinbuurgh to make sure the little man didn't get lonely and want to leave. When's Ramadan?
16

Who's it gonna be? ,

20/08/2008 14:42:01
Ramadan is cancelled this year due to employment commitments. The carry on that occurred last year better not be repeated. Damn sure my boss would not let me take a fortnight off because I stopped eating. (unless it was written into my contract I suppose...)
17

Neutral Observer,

20/08/2008 14:48:27
Cannot fathom out the possibility that Hibs are trying to sign Alan Gow. He would be another attacking midfield player to add to Zemmama, Shiels, Yantorno, Rankin, Morais, O'Brien. Can't play them all!

Zemmama coming back will be a real boost.

#7 Harold Bishop
Surprised that you are commenting on disappearing players given your record! Don't think your observation that Zemmama disappears in the winter is accurate. Admittedly ploughed field pitches are not his forte, but he still adds a lot even in those conditions and he has a big heart.

18

SouthSideHibs,

20/08/2008 15:04:25
I'm a big fan of our No 7 as is my son. Welcome back wee man - can't come soon enough.

However surprised that no-one else has questioned the fact that Pinau is STILL not available for Hibs. TOTAL and UTTER incompetence by the GFA...? Yeah I think so, sure Uncle Wattie wouldn't have to wait a forthnight, nor would Celtc.

The SFA, Scotland's shame.
19

Rolland,

20/08/2008 15:17:30
Well guys this Pinau transfer / registration does appear to be down to the SFA, I mean its not as if Cetlic have to wait a fortnight when dealing with Foreign FA's.

Just another slant on the old firm bias that exists in our game. New season, same old bias, same old, same old.
20

Silence of the Yams,

20. Dougal and Richmond may as well have been in blue and green hoops last week.

On Hibs.net there is a counter thread, with the intention of seeing if the dodgy ref decisions the Old Firm get really do 'Even Out'. I think we all already know the answer to this however!
22

Rolland,

20/08/2008 15:39:02
Aye Lenny that we do. The only "Even out" is that both get as many dodgy decisions as the other.

It us the punters that are getting short changed, no wonder they infirm can't compete in Europe without there "homer" refs.
23

Rolland,

20/08/2008 15:50:05
#24 - What about the Champions league ?

Yes it is a sign but then again QoS and Gretna (as a 2nd Divsion club) have both made the scottish cup final in last 3 years. These freaky thing can happen.
24

Lenny,

20/08/2008 15:53:22
Pundit,

Yes, but I think the point being that they dont get the dodgy decisions in Europe which they do here. Over here ALL 50-50's go to the Old Firm. You never know, with a Scottish Ref one of you may well have won the UEFA Cup. I remember Celtic fans were not exactly happy with the antics of the Porto players.
25

Rolland,

20/08/2008 16:03:05
Indeed Lenny, and the entire nation was unhappy at the antics of the "we are the peeepel" and the "followers" in Manchester.
26

SouthSideHibs,

20/08/2008 16:04:51
#19 Rollie, they put a second class stamp on the application by mistake, as I understand it. Easy enough mistake I guess.
27

Lenny,

20/08/2008 16:06:43
# 27

Or, in Rangers case last season you could play full games in your own half and 'bore' the opposition to defeat.

I will add that it was an achievement getting to the final and I did want Rangers to win. They are a Scottish team after all, even if the majority of the fans dont think that way!!
28

SouthSideHibs,

20/08/2008 16:06:54
Pundit - lets hope Glasgow Rioters don't make another final for another 30 years then.

Not just for what they did to Manchester but that turgid drivel they played, no advert whatsoever for the SPHell.
29

Lenny,

20/08/2008 16:08:18
Rolland, when we look back now however, it was hillarious tv!! Especially the 'big hard man' getting attacked by the dog!!!
30

Way Out West,

20/08/2008 16:08:26
Just noticed that the homepage of the EEN website says that additional security has been introduced to stop offensive/abusive comments being made.

Wonder if that means we've seen the last of Biley?
31

Rolland,

20/08/2008 16:13:59
#32 Aye now that was funny, as was the boy lying cattled on the ground but his mate had managed to light a fag for him.

Pundit - You may find given fair refs & officials that the other teams in Scotland could compete with you week in week out as well.
32

Lenny,

20/08/2008 16:18:39
Pundit

What have Hibs ever done? What apart from supplying several of your current team?

Well we were actually the first Scottish Team to play in the European Cup, reaching the Semi Final. I believe that is also as far as Rangers have ever reached in Europes Premier competition?
33

hibbyspurs,

20/08/2008 16:22:50
Just skipped through this and too my horror, I find myself agreeing with Rolly in the most part today.

Nice to see a sensible side to you my man instead of just the usual wind up......

Just shows that when it comes to dealing with the idiots in slumsville (all three of them) we edinburgh footbal fans have some common ground other than the fact we wash unlike our "cousins" along the M8.....
34

Rolland,

20/08/2008 16:24:33
I have no doubt it will be about the 30 mark, but how many will have been as a result of a dodgy pen, a sending off (which in turn results in a suspension so further weakens the other teams chances.)

When was the last time a pen was awarded against Celtic or Rangers at home ?
35

Johnny Jambo,

20/08/2008 16:27:41
Come on Lenny be fair it was an invitation and only a few teams we invited, yes Hibs were one and should be proud of it but to claim they got further than a team who actually had to play a number of teams to get that far is a little bit below the belt. If I am right I think both Dunfermline and Dundee have reached the Semi (of one of the European comps), someone will correct me if I am wrong I am sure
36

Johnny Jambo,

20/08/2008 16:36:50
#42 you just can't help yourself can you???????
37

Lenny,

20/08/2008 16:39:45
JJ

Yes, yes, yes, I know this mate. And you are completely correct, Dunfermline and Dundee have both reached the Semi Final. Although Hibs have went one better and also reached the Semi of the UEFA Fairs Cup.... ; )

In my defence, I was replying to the Pundits comment asking what Hibs have ever done. I was mearly stating that they have reached the same stage of the European Cup as Rangers have.

So stay out of it pesky Jambo... : )
38

Johnny Jambo,

20/08/2008 16:43:09
Lenny,
Yes I know and I know you were replying to thepundit and after seeing his comments regarding the european cup in his post 42 I wish I had stayed out of it now.
39

Lenny,

20/08/2008 16:44:07
Pundit, again your lack of knowledge is letting you down.

The beaten finalists that year were Stade Reims, the French Champions who had Raymond Kopa playing for them. If you dont know who he is look him up. In addition Hibs knocked out the German Champions Rot Weiss who had several World Cup winners in their team.

Not exactly diddy teams!
40

Lenny,

20/08/2008 16:46:56
Pundit,

I assume the German Champions are not quality in your opinion then?

Fact is Rangers fans see themselves as a huge team. But you cant ever be considered really big until you win the European Cup, like Celtic have. As it stands you have got no further than Hibs, Dunfermline, Dundee & Dundee Utd. Even Aberdeen have won more European Trophies than you.
41

Gungareesh,

20/08/2008 16:48:25
Hibs are going from strenth to strenth, the other mob from edinburgh are bottom six.
42

Lenny,

JJ

I wish I had stayed out of it too. I cant really be bothered arguing with someone whose only reply is a simplistic answer which shows they have very little knowledge of football.
43

Gungareesh,

20/08/2008 16:49:15
strength sorry lads.
getting carried away with zamma news.

ggtth..
44

Lenny,

20/08/2008 16:50:07
Pundit,

Diddy Team now they may be, but there is no way on earth that the German and French Champions were Diddy Teams back then. And if a team made up of mostly World Cup Winners is diddy then I have no idea what you would class Rangers as?
45

Rolland,

20/08/2008 16:51:32
#53 I would get tech support to check your "G" key.

Your right, they are considered Scotlands Shame instead.
47

Johnny Jambo,

20/08/2008 16:55:14
#56 pundit this is my last post for the day and i felt I had to resond to your silly comment, but I have lived and worked in other european countries and the majority of football clubs are rubbing their hands when drawn against scottish opposition, the OF included. Yes they have some good results sometimes but in the main they all come out second best.
48

John H,

edinburgh 20/08/2008 17:03:28
Delay in registration of a player should never happen unless there are some underhand moves afoot. The SFA have a record of failure in this field and it even cost the main man Jim Farry his job. He had lost his credibility long before that but it just proved it happened and the reasoning behind it.
Scotland's shame, based in Glasgow working for the Old Firm.
49

Franck,

#56 The Pundit

You are right. The other teams are regarded as minnows. While your lot are known as scotlands disgrace anf football hooligans.

Truth Hurts don't it.
50

Rolland,

20/08/2008 17:51:48
Ahem, where does your squads come from ? The converyor belt of talent at Murray park ? My er$e it does, you try and get the decent talent on the cheap from other SPL teams those you refer to as diddy. Just how many of the current team that started on Saturday came through the ranks at Ranagers ?

Aye yous would be up the creek without the diddy teams ya plum.
51

JPF,

20/08/2008 18:12:45
#63 - As a Celtic fan, I feel insulted to be bracketed with you lot. We don't get respect throughout Europe at all. European (and thankfully English too) teams realise that Celtic park is a difficult stadium to win at, but I am certain that the quality champions league outfits still see us an easy 3 points at home. There are many reasons for this, but the upshot is, we are still not quite good enough for top level european football.

Rangers on the other hand, I struggle to see how ôn earth anyone respects them throughout Europe. Your last 2 European tournaments have resulted in you being thrown out of the first round of one, and despite getting to the final of another, a thousands strong "minority" of your supporters ramapaged through the host city, smashing it to bits. You really really do not generate much respect throughout europe with actions like those.

And here endeth the futile debate!!

You cannot argue these things. Times move on, economics and technology changes. Its like trying to compare Jack Nicholas with Tiger woods or Rocky Marciano with Mohamed Ali or maybe Pele with D'Archeville - they are both black after all but there the similarity ends!
