Falkirk 2-1 Hearts: Falkirk favoured by defensive blips

IT MIGHT lack the glamour and tension of the title race but the battle for seventh place in the Scottish Premier League remains alive after Falkirk took advantage of a poor defensive display from Hearts last night. Two goals either side of half-time were enough to take Falkirk to within two points of their opponents, with two games to play.
Tam Scobbie and Carl Finnigan were the ones to feast on the lapses of concentration in the Hearts box and although substitute Deividas Cesnauskis pulled one goal back with 14 minutes remaining the Tynecastle side could not recover from these earlier setbacks. Little went right for Hearts, who lost both Gary Glen and Saulius Mikoliunas to injury in the first half. However, neither of these changes impacted on the defence, and it is this department which cost Hearts dear last night.

Falkirk manager John Hughes was delighted that on a firm, slick surface his side were able to re-discover their fluent passing game. Stephen Frail, the Hearts caretaker manager, questioned his side's desire. "Falkirk wanted it more," he said. "I hoped to finish the season with five wins but we'll just have to finish it with four wins now. It's important that we win against Kilmarnock and then Gretna and finish this season on a tiny, tiny high."

In an atmosphere that was predictably downbeat, Falkirk were first to threaten when Scott Arfield's shot was deflected just wide of the post. Relieved of the tension which can stifle the ambition of players both teams combined to produce an end-to-end opening, with only a fine covering tackle from Chris Mitchell preventing Hearts' Mikoliunas from playing in team-mate Glen. While keen to see Falkirk make the most of a campaign in which his side has played some fine football, Hughes' thoughts had already drifted to next season, and he dropped skipper Jack Ross from the squad. The defender has just signed a pre-contract agreement with St Mirren and will see out what remains of his Falkirk career in the stand.

Mitchell, his replacement, looked comfortable at the back although Hearts were granted a chance to test the Falkirk rearguard when Gerard Aafjes bundled Glen over just outside the box. The away side failed to capitalise on the opportunity and there was further cause for regret when Glen was forced off after 34 minutes, with the striker labouring with a leg injury. Jamie Mole was sent on to replace him, and this was only the first alteration forced upon Frail before half-time.

Mikoliunas was another who had picked up an injury which had failed to respond to on-field treatment. Lee Wallace came on for the Lithuanian and the changes evidently unsettled Hearts, who slipped a goal behind a minute into first-half injury time. Steve Banks had been forced to make a good save from an overhead kick by Michael Higdon but Hearts were caught cold by Pedro Moutinho's resultant corner. Scobbie had all the time in the world to direct a volley beyond Banks from the edge of the six-yard box, with the Hearts defence posted missing.

While saving the match was a valid prospect when only a goal behind, Hearts were dealt a decisive blow just six minutes after the re-start. Again questions had to be asked of the away side's defence. A long ball from Patrick Cregg found Scobbie on the fringe of the box and while it was obvious the midfielder would seek to play a header back across the box, no-one in the Hearts rearguard seemed prepared for it. Instead they stood like statues and watched Finnigan react first with an artful header which found the net.

With only one substitution left there was little Frail could do to alter the flow of the game, although he did at least attempt to add some spice to the Hearts attack when replacing the ineffectual Calum Elliot with Cesnauskis after 66 minutes.

Falkirk, for their part, brought on Russell Latapy and Hughes hoped the addition of his class to the midfield would help the home side see out the victory in untroubled style.

Cesnauskis, however, was keen to catch the eye. This urge led to him picking up a booking for simulation after he fell to the ground in theatrical fashion following a light challenge from Mitchell. But the Lithuanian made his mark in more laudable fashion after 76 minutes when finishing well from a tight angle after a solo run in the box.

Falkirk: Supple, Mitchell, Scobbie, Aafjes, Barr, McBride, Moutinho (Latapy 72), Arfield, Cregg, Finnigan, Higdon. Subs not used: Olejnik, Clarke, Barrett, Bradley, Stewart, Staunton. Booked: Aafjes.

Hearts: Banks, Thomson, Goncalves, Berra, Karipidis, Kingston, Jonsson, Mikoliunas (Wallace 39), Elliot (Cesnauskis 67), Palazuelos, Glen (Mole 34). Subs not used: Ridgers, Stewart, Zaliukas, Screpis. Booked: Thomson, Mole, Cesnauskis, Palazuelos.

Glen hopes award boosts Tynecastle prospects

ANGUS WRIGHT

HEARTS striker Gary Glen hopes being named the SPL's young player of the month for April can help boost his chances of becoming a first-team regular next season.

The 18-year-old has made a massive impact since being drafted into the side in the wake of the Gorgie club's failure to make the top six.

Glen has scored two goals in two starts, against St Mirren and Inverness Caley Thistle, and started off leading the attack again in last night's meeting with Falkirk. However, it was a bad night for the youngster as he was forced to leave the field after just 34 minutes with a suspected leg injury.

The teenager, who came close to a big-time move to Manchester United two years ago, is desperate to prove he is capable of retaining his place for next term and, before last night's game, talked about his rise to date.

"It has been fantastic to win an award," he said. "I didn't expect it to happen as quickly. When I got the phone call I was delighted, it was a great feeling. I don't think things could have gone much better for me.

"I've had two starts and two goals, and then this award as well – it has been a good couple of weeks for me. Hopefully I can stay in the squad for next season. It's not my decision, but hopefully I can start the games that are remaining and show what I can do. I just need to get the head down and keep playing the way I'm playing."

Glen is aware that the Tynecastle outfit are likely to look to sign new strikers during the close season, with Andrius Velicka and Michal Pospisil's departures this season set to be followed by Roman Bednar's loan switch to West Brom being made permanent. However, the youngster is confident in his ability to maintain his rise to prominence, even if he has to take tips from fresh recruits to do so.

He added: "If the club bring in a new striker then I'll try and compete with him. It will also give me a chance to see how he plays and pick things up from him. Whatever happens, hopefully I can take my chance and be in the first team for next season."

We've had to endure some awful "stuff" this season and last night was as bad as our first home game against Hibs...nothing has improved it seems.
Sure the stats since shaggy took over look better, but we have scraped by all to often.
I firmly believe if John Hughes had been Hearts manager last night the players would at least have given 100%.
They didn't and guys like Kingston and Goncalves should take a look at themselves.
Still on the "rant", more evidence was produced to confirm what the vast mmajority of fans have been saying for over a year now...Elliot and Mole are not capable of playing in this division, even bottom six.
I shudder to think what next season will bring if last nights team, is the eleven we start with in '08-'09.

If Shaggy is still "manager" at Hearts next season and Moronov hasnt brought in any new decent players, Tynecastle is going to be an empty shell of a football stadium.

The opening paragraph reads "the battle for seventh place in the Scottish Premier League remains alive...".

Says it all really about the diabolical state of Hearts FC, the self-styled "third force in Scottish football"! And yet the Jambo "fans" still insist, in true Edinburgh stiff upper-lip fashion, that all is well and that this is a "blip" in their beloved team's path to glory - GET REAL GUYS!

While I am certainly no fan of the Jambo's. I do see a lot of realsic people on these threads, just because some of the posters defend the indefencable when Hibs fans or Weedgies talk about 'Carry On Tynecastle' doesn't mean they dont realise something is badly amiss with their team.

That said there is still a lot of seriously misplaced optimism, which in itself is understandable (who wants to think their team is in that much trouble), about the possibilities for next year.

Without substantial investment in both management and playing staff Hearts will struggle and as there has been not one jot of credible investment this year as the team has gotten steadily worse there is no reason to believe that anything will change in the close season.

To the Hearts fans reading this, sorry it's there for all to see. I'm not presenting opinion as fact just saying there is nothing to show your situation will change next season.

I do however sympathise with you, not about the state of affairs at your club, you're in no danger of going bust after all and there are many other clubs with smaller biscuit tins than you.

I am just truely, truely sorry that you have to put up with the insanity of that pillock Riley Hamish....

Course once again some of you will try to prove me wrong by pointing out that you're the big team and that you've beaten your closest rivals soundly over the years. That must mean that things are rosy in Gorgie after all...

12

Jambo-ree,

06/05/2008 08:36:14
Unusual in recent history for our defence to have a stinker and it's doubly troubling given our poor records of winning from behind. If they screw up twice then we really are done for these days.

#19 Albert - to be a football fan is to be an optimist. Especially in Scotland where the OF almost inevitably rule the roost and use their financial clout to keep it that way. The rest of the teams live more in hope than expectation. We had reason for expectation with Vlad's spending but looks like money wasted on mercenaries.

There are some good youngsters starting to come thorugh but they will need good seasoned pros alongside them for a while yet (emphasis on 'good') and a proper manager to bring them on. Sad that our chances last night disapeared up the tunnel with an 18-year-old.

Ach well, it's the first game we've lost to a non-OF team since January 2 - and there's always next season!

Watched this game last night and it looked like a game of junior football. This is the WORST team I have ever seen in a maroon jersey.Yes I was there when they were in the first div but I`d say this lot are worse. There`s a wholesale clearance needed.I `d like to make a few obvious points.Firstly what I saw of Miko before he went off is he`s no better. His distribution of the ball is abject.Must go.Secondly Kingston is a waste of space. He flatters to decieve and really is not a team player or anything of substance.Should go to.Elloit is way out his depth.Contributed nil.Should be shipped to the 2nd division.Mole ..tries but I feel he`s another who won`t make it.Chesney,I`ve said before he`s a football player and is always worth a place,Goncalves, not a clue how to defend, should go.Glen I must say looked a prospect in the short time he was on.He seems to have a football brain which is lacking in the majority of them.
Next season there has to be a massive clear out and that includes Frail as first team coach.I`d keep him on but only as a reserve coach.Priority must be a manager with authority to clear out the deadwood. Will it happen, my guess is no.If that is the case we will be fighting relegation with this lot.

#20, CJ, As it is admired amongst the Hearts Fans on these threads to provide proof of opinion, I have backed my thoughts up with solid article.

Now, what on earth are these signs that you are talking about? One young player who is untested against any team of note. THe possibility of another ubtested youngster who might just possibly be ok, That is not any kind of positive sign I'd like to base my hopes for next season on...

Yes I am A hibs fan, I never denied that but I dont liken your side to mine, as your history is better and your future is worse so what would be the point...

As usual Jambo-ree @#23 is a voice of reason, able to converse in an adult way to reasonable points...

Shame you just cant shake off your hatred for my team while talking aobut your own CJ, Innit?

The most depressing thing about yesterday was going to Tyncastle and queing up for an hour beside the rest of the Jambo faithful who where renewing their season tickets. They where making the effort to support the club and also paying for the privelage. Then I went along to watch a bunch of lazzy, un-talented wasters pretending to be football players. From back to front there was not one player good enough or talented enough to pull on the club colours. The players, and I use that term very loosely, where wearing white tops. But someone should have told them that it didnt mean they should surrender before a ball was kicked. In hindsight most of them should have been wearing yellow because they bottled out of just about every tackle and in some cases, Elliot, in particular they even refused to run.
Frail you need to be a man and do the decent thing, you are no more a football manager than my 7 year old son is. In fact even he could see that the players you keep picking are crap.

More Lithuanian player will make Hearts very good team with big fight.

It is Cesnauskis who score goal after substitute with Scotland player Elliot (he is not favorite of victor), so we see that Lithuanian player can score goals to win game.

#42 I am glad you accept that there is no tangible evidence of what you say.

I think back to the AGM and wonder why nothing "Tangible" was discussed at the Forum all it did was belittle us even further.

We were promised a Manager nearly 5 months ago.
The interference, I still see evidence of it although in the last few games I guess SF has been allowed to chose his players as there is absolutely nothing at stake.
Youngsters, I agree we have a few, but we cannot afford to play them altogether without some Good expereinced players around them to bring them on, play them within the squad we have today and we will ruin them.
Results since Jan have been ok I admit, but are we really saying that these results against bvery poor opposition stand us in good stead for the future.

And finally regards debt, I see no evidence of the debt reducing or how that can happen, there are a lot of people who are not renewing ST's therefore less revenue into the club.

Oh yes and finally finally what is happening with the stadium we were promised, and if that comes to fruition what happens to the reducing debt???

Catholic Jambo, Honestly, come on.

`1. Has it? Really? Proof please.
2. Stated intention to win league, CL World cup stars yadda, yadda, yadda
3. cutting costs on the pitch just as i said,
R.E. without substantial investment etc.etc.
4. Fair enough, I pay no attention to hearts reserves and under 19's so cannot comment.
5. You can have that too, but is that what you want for hearts? As good as other teams outside the OF... So you're not a big club after all then...
6. Yes debt will reduce, slowly over many years of suffering the same garbage you've watched all season.

Misplaced optimism/there is no reason to believe anything will change in the close season/sorry it is there for you all to see...
Absolutely true, you're the one making claims things will change, I say things will stay the same... which means I have an Inferiority complex how exactely???

You called yourselves the big team, not my words that come back to haunt you now. Again my complex, how???
...Things are rosy in Gorgie... Well as long as you can look at everything that's wrong with your club and blame it on me and a fanciful inferiority complex of your invention, yes I suppose they must be...

Yes CJ I'll admit it I'm worried about Hearts, that's why i make the points that i do, YOUR CLUB IS IN A HUGE MESS, do you not worry? Does this make you the proud owner of one of these inferiority complexes your so fond of bestowing on anyone that shows an interest n Hearts...
I'm glad you hold no ill will towards the supporters of other teams, I whole heartedly apologise for jumping to that conclusion about you.
It also makes two of us that feel that way, well as long as your not a 'fan' of either OF side...

Seriously, you need to get over yourself though, i am only patronising towards you because you yourself are a patronising fool that seems to think everyone has complexs' or rubs their hands at the sorry state your club is in,Of course I'll patronise a buff

Amazing how both Tommy Tommy and Albert Kidd can write so much and say so little.
Leaving these two cretins aside, last nights game was yet another disgrace. Its nothing to do with debt or Vlad, its all about attitude. How many players looked like they wanted to win last night? A traffic cone could have made more contribution than Elliot. Goncalves was again grim and the whole midfield failed to perform. Its all about man management. Frail is decent enough coach but clearly cannot cut it as a manager.

Johnny Jambo,

#67 Prof, I think the fact that we are playing the rest of the deadbeats in the SPL these games lack a bit of motivation, as for SF he has done as well as most managers/coaches outside the OF since he took over.

Dont take that as me wanting him to stay as the coach, I don't I want a good quality man in charge, but more importantly I want Romanov to Butt out and let the man do the job.

P.S. When Hearts start having positives again you will see how sincere I am about my utter lack of hatred for your team...

Wasting your time I'm afraid mate. A wee bit like banging your head of a wall. Some people just see no bad in their club, just the way it is.

The majority of players signed by Romanov are NOT fit to wear the Hearts jersey,They dont give a monkeys about their fans who follow them through bad and more bad games. They are paid far to much for what they do infact the majority wouldnt get a game for the reserves in the top teams in the leagues. Our discipline record is crap as well, when players get yellow cards it shows they are playing shi--. Get rid of them now. Get the new manager in and get it all sorted out for next season.

Catholic,

Not for the first time you have used the term parasite to attack a Hibs fan. Not quite sure how any fan commenting on any story on this website can be classed as such. The whole purpose of the comments section is for people to comment. This isnt kickback or Hibs.net, therefore, ANYONE is able to comment on any story, be that positive or negative, Hibs or Hearts, Football or Rugby etc etc. This most certainly does not mean the person commenting is a parasite.

I'm not sure if you are aware but you have a real nasty habit of speaking down to people on this site.

Is feeding of other peoples pain not the entire basis of football banter? In this case are Jambo's who mention 107 years or 22 in a row to Hibs fans also parasites?

I just think parasite is a bit strong a term to be given out to football fans. It would appear that you take insults to Hearts a bit too personally.

Anyway, as always agree to disagree.... : )

Not sure why the two threads on the Rangers extension request have been closed, freedom of speech is over I think.
Nevertheless, thankfully I can hi-jack this thread to have my say.

Rangers are having a laugh by asking for an extension. Remember Gretna before the Lyon game? Then they got humped 3-0. Rest doesnt work, it removes sharpness and makes you tired and lazy! Scotland vs Italy, another postponement of games and what happened? Scotland got humped.
Rangers know the score, you want to win all four, then play all four no excuses. Rangers had a choice, they could have dropped out the UEFA cup and wrapped the title up by now, but they wanted to go for it, so now they must go for it.
3 finals and a chance to win the league is remarkable no matter what happens, but now its time to go big or go home.
Rangers couldnt beat Hibs because they werent good enough. Will they be good enough to beat Motherwell? Personally, I see a draw on the cards, they dont appear to have the legs to wrap up these 4 trophies. It appears to be all over, but lets see what happens.
