CAPTAIN John Terry atoned for a costly error to earn England's makeshift team a deserved victory against Germany in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

The Chelsea defender headed home an 84th-minute free-kick from Stewart Downing to make amends for his mix-up with goalkeeper Scott Carson which had gifted Patrick Helmes an equaliser early in the second half.

Matthew Upson had scored his first goal for England to give Fabio Capello's side a half-time lead and they looked assured and composed despite fielding only three first-choice players.

England made a positive start and Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, making his England debut, quickly played in Jermain Defoe with a clear run at the German goal. The Portsmouth striker saw his shot blocked by the feet of Rene Adler, but was ruled offside in any case.

Capello's side did most of the early pressing even though Terry, Gareth Barry and David James were the only first-choice players in the side, and Agbonlahor got to the byline but saw his low cross cut out by Per Mertesacker.

Germany threatened for the first time when Poitr Trochowski whipped in a dangerous low centre which James was unable to cling on to, but managed to parry clear of the danger area.

Agbonlahor was not looking overawed on his debut and was not afraid to barge Adler out of the way when attempting to reach a reverse pass from Downing, although he was adjudged to have fouled the German keeper.

There was a hunger about England's play that was unsurprising given the opportunity for the fringe players on display to stake a claim for a place in the World Cup qualifiers.

Germany started to knock the ball around in more confident fashion although neither side was looking particularly threatening in front of goal.

England then enjoyed their own spell of pressure which culminated in Upson putting them ahead after 24 minutes.

Shaun Wright-Phillips had a shot deflected wide and, then from his resulting corner, Upson had a header deflected behind.

This time Downing curled in the corner which Adler failed to reach and, after Agbonlahor had been unable to make a clean contact, Upson was on hand to poke the ball over the line from close range. It was the first goal for his country by the West Ham defender in what was his 12th appearance.

Germany retaliated and forced two corners in quick succession but they did not trouble the England back four.

Wright-Phillips became the first player to be yellow-carded after 29 minutes for a challenge on Jermaine Jones.

Trochowski's resulting free-kick picked out Miroslav Klose but his header was just too high. James was then relieved to see a flashing header from Heiko Westermann go just past the post from a Bastian Schweinsteiger free-kick.

England looked assured and well organised and Mertesacker did well to cut out a dangerous low centre from Wright-Phillips with Defoe waiting to pounce behind him.

Capello made a double half-time switch, bringing on West Brom goalkeeper Carson and Tottenham striker Darren Bent in place of James and Defoe. It was Carson's first cap since his ill-fated blunder in the Euro 2008 qualifier with Croatia at Wembley 12 months ago.

The home side made three switches with Tim Wiese, Marko Marin and Patrick Helmes replacing Adler, Jones and Klose respectively.

There was a quiet start to the half but England looked assured and composed. Downing found himself in plenty of space 25 yards out to line up a shot and would have been disappointed to drag his effort several yards wide of the far post.

Bent should have made it 2-0 when he took advantage of some hesitancy by the Germans, slipped the ball wide of Wiese but then screwed his shot wide.

It proved costly as a mix-up between Terry and Carson handed a gift equaliser to Helmes after 63 minutes.

Terry tried to shepherd the ball back to Carson, despite the close attention of Helmes, but the German player nipped in ahead of Carson and poked the ball past him before rolling it into an empty net.

England tried to retaliate and Agbonlahor found himself with a clear run at goal on the right but drilled his shot into the side netting.

Marin was not afraid to shoot with Upson blocking one drive and then Carson parrying another from the same player.

Wright-Phillips came close to restoring England's lead when his powerful shot was turned onto the post by Wiese.

With six minutes left Terry made amends for his earlier error when he headed in a curling free-kick from Downing for the winner.

Germany: Adler (Wiese 46), Friedrich (Tasci 68), Mertesacker, Westermann, Compper (Schafer 77), Schweinsteiger, Rolfes, Jones (Marin 46), Trochowski, Gomez (Podolski 57), Klose (Helmes 46). Subs not used: Hinkel, Hitzlsperger, Weis.

England: James (Carson 46), Johnson, Terry, Upson, Bridge, Wright-Phillips (Crouch 90), Carrick, Barry, Downing, Defoe (Bent 46), Agbonlahor (Young 77). Subs not used: Robinson, Lescott, Richards, Mancienne, Davies, Parker, Bullard. Booked: Wright-Phillips.

A great result for England. They must be contenders for the World Cup and as soon as Scotland's and Australia's interests end, I will be backing the English. I don't go in for this "little man" attitude where Scots are expected to supoort anyone who is playing England. But what can you expect from a parochial and bigoted little backwater?

Had to laugh after England's winner. The commentator said the English just love to beat Germany. Enter co-commentater Lou Macari, "After Scotland that is."

I could almost hear 20 million Englishmen screaming at their TV sets - "We don't care about you Jocks. You mean nothing to us."

We really do like to exaggerate our own importance in the world don't we?

Did macari really say that ? How embarressing.

This is their most impressive result yet under the new boss ...Germany haven't lost in berlin since 1973, which puts the significance into perspective. Although a 'friendly' , it seemed pretty much full-on to me... both teams gave 100%.

The itv commentators seemed to apportion most of the blame for the goal on Carson, but tp my mind it was 100% Terry's fault...he had an opportunity to just boot the ball away, but chose to try and shield the ball with the german striker bearing down ...it was the wrong decision : he should have kicked the ball clear and the resultant goal was no fault of Carson.

But the big man didn't half make amends.

Are you a Terry Atona?

Que 50 posts below which go something along the lines of "I bet all the English will now be thinking they can win the world cup" etc etc....

because of course that must be how it is!

Good game anyway, from basically a 2nd or 3rd string England team, passing was crisp and most accurate, defence (apart from that one error) was top notch.

For someone who does not give a care about Scotland, you seem pretty hyped over England winning.

Did the English not win on German soil 5-1 a few years back, why mention Berlin?

A well deserved victory for England. Although a kind of makeshift when you consider all the call-offs, the team seemed settled and coherent.

My German pals were embarrassed by their own team's performance. The worst they've seen for years, they said.

But then again, credit to the English team. Your opponents always are as good as you allow them to be.

#1 Harlem Tam - what's with the "we" when referring to Scotland? You are about as Scottish as your mate BTO/ASN. - if fact you spout the same sort of Colin Nish that you could be same person.

Most Scottish people prefer England and English teams over your beloved west Coast bigot brothers. Fact.

Great stuff. Tommy displayed the true 'Dunkirk' spirit and Jerry had no answers.

The two pronged offensive by England's wide men, down the flanks, reminded me of Jerry's own tactics against Belguim and France in 1940.

Whatever you do though, don't mention the war......

These unusually restrained, objective, mature, almost friendly, comments regarding England have today totally disarmed me. I was going to mention Pies Salmond, Argentina, HBoS, those two WORLD CLASS banking experts) forgotten their names)etc etc, especially after having learned of the adulation of ¨the hand of God¨Madonna and caught sight of some immatures in the crowd last night wearing kilts and Argentine flags. Scotland and Argentina together! But disarmed I am and find myself very pro Scottish, which is what I prefer by far. Normally I either get completely ignored) can´t understand why) or the schizoprhenics curse the day I was born.

#12,

With the Italian manager melding with the traditional 'Bulldog' and 'up and at 'em' spirit, the World Cup is as good as won!

Street parties, bunting and dancing Pearly Kings and Queens, will be the order of the day in old Blighty.

Ther only sour note is the England manager hailing from a former Axis power. It doesn't seem right somehow!

The England performance last night was quite good.I think England have reasonable players that have a fair chance of success. It seems they´ve got the master in Copello. As for Scotland I thinkthe SFA are totally useless.Their choices of coach have been laughable. The German,Mcleish and certainly Walter Smith haven´t a clue. Ofcourse Scotland don´t have the players and this I do find sad when in my 50 years of watching football down south I´ve feasted on Charlie Cooke, Denis Law, Souness. No the list is endless and I´m talking world class. Never the less , perhaps Scotland need to break the bank by hiring a world class coach as a first step. Maybe a way could be found for Scottish clubs to join English leagues allowing access to cash and the fostering of youth. Certainly something needs to be done. There should be no easy victories for such as Argentina in Glasgow, as it once was.

AS Fife. You were correct to point out Capello does come from a former axis power. That does disturb me too. I think we should investigate his past. That Vokes fellow was a bit dodgy too. That Jap at Celtic might have, well, leanings. Don´t forget Pearl Harbor!

Makes you wonder who won the war. Only last week I bought a Japanese telly after resisting for the last 40 years. Then I found my self watching my Japanese telly with a bottle of Pils in my hand, whilst wearing a top designer Italian cardigan!

The Japs, Jerries and Tallies have won through stealth in the end.

Its all a bit tight in here where banter is now considered racist, biggoted etc. Well speaking as a true Scottish nationalist I think the English are a bunch of jumped up bams who play hoofball just like us, although there are 10 times more of you and you still achieve bugge- all!

Pistol Pete,

And yes I cheer for any team playing England and would prefer to support Hearts in Europe as they are the other Edinburgh team (where I live) and I support Hibs. I still have a Brazil top that I bought, well if I bought a England one, I would have been pummelled and why would I? As Strachan was asked on SKYSPORTS - "What would you do if you were English"
Strachan - "I would shoot masel"
Now if an Englishman said that about Scotland I would laugh and class this as banter.

Hi Peter,

Credit where credit is due!:)

Using words like 'Bosche' seems to be very naughty in the eyes of some(yes I'm talking about you #20)! Fritz would be just as bad and jokes about Italian tanks are a complete no no!

Anyway it's not my fault I read Victor and Commando comics 35+ years ago!:)

Great result on the back of a good performance. The thing is now is for the English not to do what they nearly always do and over extrapliate what this means.
No, your not world beaters and not certs for the next WC but you have got a decent bunch of players to choose from who should at least make a semi final considering the other teams out there.

Getting Cappelo was vital as he looks like he is in the process of re-educating these prima donnas who make up the English national tam and who usually underachieve into players who might actually not bottle it come the next tournie.

England are not Brasil but they do have the players with the right management and tactics who could take them all the way.

I think your bitter hatred of the English makes you look a little obsessed.. When are you gonna come up with something original? the 'Morris Dancing' thing is old hat now

Highly amusing just the same :-)

They played well, got a result and despite a lot of 'big names' being missing showed what kind of a performance they are capable of. We mustn't get carried away. They've made a great start in the World Cup qualifiers, but qualifying for the tournament and winning the tournament couldn't be further apart.
Well done England....keep up the good work!!!
