RANGERS fans will be able to watch next week's UEFA Cup Final in Manchester on outdoor screens, it was announced today.
Manchester City Council had been under pressure to promise "fan zones" ahead of Wednesday's match against FC Zenit St Petersburg. Councillor Pat Karney of Manchester City Council today said: "In the light of Rangers qualifying for the final and the massive reported demand from fans, we've arranged for big outdoor screens for fans to watch the match.

"I'm confident that Manchester will give a very warm welcome to fans from Rangers and from Zenit and that all fans will have a fabulous day."

Anyone get the feeling Manchester's intransigent cop, Uber Gerry, has been forced into this? From local pubs, clubs and hotels to Rangers, UEFA, the SFA and even the First Minister. It's an amazing U turn on what Uber Gerry was saying not a week ago.

I'm very confident that there will be lots of drunken fans throwing chairs at each other, smashing windows, and fighting with each other, as always happens with a sucky sport like soccer.

But the game is so boring it's almost hard to blame them.

Oh, anything where fans don't get drunk, stab each other, whack each other over the head, get drunk, spit at each other, smash things up, get drunk, taunt the police, sing tasteless songs about people dying, and get drunk.

Must admit, I'm also partial to any sport that doesn't end 0-0 and is settled by some gimmicky shoot-off thing.

Well Manchester, host the fecking match and everything that comes with it!!

Why doesn't the City of Manchester hire Manchester United's ground and put the big screens there?

Better crowd control, better comfort for the crowd.

You can make all the insipid comments you want about cows and CNN, but the fact is that soccer fans are pretty much the lowest of the low - and soccer is the most boring sport on the face of the earth. That's why the fans are always getting drunk and rioting. Give them a game that doesn't end 0-0 and maybe there'd be some hope.

I spot a trend in the structure of your sentences which match that of an insipid bigot.
Pleases rest assured there will be no breaking of windows as it is Rangers fans attending the game.
Follow with pride!

I take it from your repeated of the term soccer that you're a yank?

A quote from a Guardian article.

"Whenever American football fans riot or ice hockey fans beat the hell out of one another, whenever the supporters of basketball or baseball teams go on a cop-taunting, car-torching, window-smashing victory spree, the violence is invariably treated as a local disturbance or an historical anomaly. And whenever college football fans engage in riotous behaviour that would be considered a national scandal if it happened in Britain (as they frequently do), no one seems terribly inclined to call it hooliganism.

Meanwhile lazy US satirists compare rioting French Islamic youth to soccer hooligans, Bucky the monkey-hating cat in the nationally syndicated Get Fuzzy strip raises a chuckle by dressing up as a Hartlepool FC "English hooligan", and the Simpsons scriptwriters seem unable to mention soccer without inserting a gag about how the sport turns its supporters into mindless thugs.

The truth is that both Bill Buford and Frodo Baggins could have stayed at home to get their slumming hoolie kicks.

Meantime, I think it's time for the pot to shut the fcuk up."

"... an insipid bigot"?

"American football fans" were not at Hillsborough.
"ice hockey fans" did not cause the Heysel disaster.
I have been to plenty of college football games. The vast majority of fans are well-behaved and sober. I can have a drink in a nearby bar without someone in a tattoo and an earring throwing a chair at me or threatening me with a broken beer bottle.

But best of all, I don't have to sit through something that ends "nil-nil".

An insipid bigot? A bit of a tautology there, I think.

So is "Bemused and above it all".

Or, come to that, "intelligent life form at Ibrox".

I'll never forget the day Rangers played a pre-season friendly with my team - and 600 of their drunken, foul-mouthed "supporters" leaped over the barricades and "took" the main stand.

If you have never forgotten that then I suggest you stay well away from Parc De Prince when PSG are in town.
Never seen so many policeman on duty as for one of their matches.Loved the net protecting the away section from missiles.
Better off watching from the safety of the Auld Alliance.

#18 - Arm in the back of a cow - People who reside in the State that spawned the infamous mass murderer and cannibal, Ed Gein, should probably shut up about a wee bit of bother at a football match.
20

Finbarr Saunders,

But, saying that, Old Firm supporters are the lowest of the low and will probably bring shame to Scotland with their antics.

I hope Manchester's finest have cancelled all leave and have the riot gear, Tasers and tear gas at the ready to keep the Weegie neds in check.
21

John Blackley,

Florida 08/05/2008 18:05:40
I hope and expect Rangers fans to behave well in Manchester and will be disappointed if they do.

I also hope and expect the City of Manchester - and its police force to provide a welcome to the fans and the hospitality that bringing all that money to the city deserves. (I do not hope and do not expect a return to the bad days when the local police were tooled up before the fans arrived and seemed to provoke the fans at every turn.)

Although I'm not a fan of Rangers I am delighted at their success and certain that regular Ibrox attendees will conduct themselves in a civilised fashion and have a great time - win or lose.

Finbarr Saunders,

I can already picture the hoards of gap-toothed, over-tattooed, mono-browed, weasel-faced louts, with fake Rangers tops or Ulster flags tied around their waists, supping Buckfast, Super Brew or suchlike, whilst grunting snippets of their hate-filled, tuneless dirges about anything anti-Catholic or anti-Irish.

Innocent Mancunians will be subjected to their drunken, unintelligible rants or threats of violence, and the sight of grown men openly urinating and vomiting in public.

I suspect that they won't be welcomed back to Manchester!

These threads will grow ever-increasingly bitter and desperate over the next few days as the media-machine cranks up the Manchester-mania, and the days and hours until the UEFA Cup Final 2008 are counted down.

Forget the myriad league titles and domestic baubles. Ask any Celtic fan worth his salt what his club's single greatest achievement has been, and they will point you to 1967. Ask any Rangers fan, and they will point you to 1972. Such is the aura that accompanies the winning of a major European trophy, an achievement that resonates far beyond our parochial little backyard. The delicate balance that has persisted for 36 years, due to the OF having only the one European triumph each, is now under threat. A second major European trophy for Rangers in the early part of the 21st Century, especially in a competition where Celtic failed at the last hurdle only 5 years ago, will bring with it long term bragging rights and will result in Celtic living in the shadow of their bitter rivals until such times as they can emulate the feat. Little surprise that they are so desperate for RFC to fail.

Welcome to the new order, bhoys.

For a Scottish team to reach a European final is a terrific achievement and RFC are to be congratulated for making the final. Hope everyone enjoys their trip to Manchester, and the Gers can bring the cup to Scotland.

AJ Fife,

Best of luck to the Gers and let us all hope the day passes without incident. However the reality is:-

All staff leave banned at the Manchester A&E departments, Glescae shoplifting teams at the ready, extra Riot Police brought in and emergency glazing firms on standby!

It could be a day to remember for the Manchester public alright!

We are there! and so far only #27 has got whats really going on.
They just cant handle it, now or in the past!
As for the violent fans thing, remind me again how we cant have an old firm title decider in scotland at a normal kick off time at the weekend?
