Published Date: 22 November 2008
THE reactions to Scotland's 1-0 defeat by Argentina on Wednesday were predictably varied, ranging from disapproval of George Burley and his team to the view that it was, in the circumstances, an acceptably spirited performance. But, of all the criticisms directed at Burley, the most misguided and ill-founded was the one made by a former player let loose on a newspaper column.
He did not so much accuse as find the national team manager guilty of being "a soft touch" and easily manipulated, on the grounds that he had readily acquiesced to the SFA's decision to contract a fixture that was nothing more than a potential money-
making exercise.

Burley, he insisted, had been forced to take a match he would not have wanted, at home to opponents whose style of play would not approximate to that which the Scots are likely to face in their next World Cup qualifier, away to the Netherlands at the end of March. This is a rather flimsy base from which to launch such an attack on his target's moral fibre.

Had the former player given the matter proper thought, he may have realised that he would have to level the same criticism at every manager in the game, including those he once played for and the two who are currently in charge of the champions of Scotland and England, Gordon Strachan and Sir Alex Ferguson.

No manager is exempt from the financial imperatives of a game that is as much a business as it is a sport, no board of directors free of the obligation to maximise income and minimise outgoings at every opportunity. Does anyone – including Burley's defamer – seriously believe that Ferguson and Harry Redknapp, the latter then in charge of Portsmouth, were really keen on playing each other in an exhibition match in Abuja, Nigeria, in July? Or that the Manchester United manager relishes the global expeditions made annually by his team in the cause of springing new revenue streams?

Similarly, Gordon Strachan knew that, when Celtic signed Shunsuke Nakamura, the deal would include energy-testing visits to Japan at awkward times of the year that would not be made simply for the purpose of spreading goodwill. As with the Scottish champions' fixtures-crammed tours of North America, these lengthy excursions are made specifically to promote the "brand" and to generate substantial sponsorship fees.

Strachan's "enthusiasm" for such odysseys may be gauged from his comment on returning from the one in 2006, in which the matches in the United States were so close to each other on the calendar and so distant geographically that the time between them was filled mainly by flying from one city to the next. "Never again", would be an appropriately concise precis of his feelings.

Because of economic necessity, of course, there was not the slightest chance of his wish being granted, and the Parkhead club duly returned to America the following year. It was noticeable, however, on that occasion, that a compromise of sorts had been reached, as they played only two games, one in Denver, the other in Chicago.

At a less lucrative, but no less relevant level, Mixu Paatelainen surely would not have welcomed the news that Hibernian would be involved in an Intertoto Cup tie as early as 6 July this year. The big Finn, too, might have experienced that sinking feeling on discovering that his team's opponents would be the Swedes of Elfsborg, at the time in the middle of their domestic championship, fully wound up and ready for the two victories – 2-0 in each leg – they would secure against the Easter Road side. As several managers of my acquaintance have confirmed, a competitive European fixture at that time of year disrupts pre-season schedules and kills the possibility of the manager enjoying ideal preparation for the forthcoming domestic programme. Most significantly in terms of their prospects in the tests that lie ahead, a full recovery from the destabilisation can take months. They also agreed that managers everywhere are subject to directives from their board, based entirely on either the making or the saving of money, that, from a purely sporting perspective, they could do without.

As for the notion that Burley on Wednesday should have been playing a friendly away from home against opposition similar in style to Holland, it is difficult to think of a weaker argument. Simulation of forthcoming events is not the purpose of "challenge" matches, since it is clearly impossible to predict with any certainty that the form will be reproduced. In international football, even more than in the club game, it is inevitable that the personnel involved will be significantly different.

In effectively accusing Burley of spinelessness, the "columnist" should surely have laid the same charge against Diego Maradona and, for instance, every manager who has ever held the post with Brazil. Argentina's next World Cup qualifier – it should be remembered that Maradona was appointed to revitalise a campaign that has been flagging alarmingly – is to be played in South America, almost certainly under a hot southern hemisphere sun. For what possible reason, apart from their £800,000 fee, could the Argentine FA agree to a match in Scotland on a cold, wet and windy November night?

As for Brazil, they are the Harlem Globetrotters of football. The general populace rarely see their national team play friendlies in the flesh, since they are almost invariably played abroad. This is entirely attributable to the fact that they command the highest appearance money of any country in the world. There is no known example of one of their managers opposing the practice.

Isn't it? Many managers would disagree. Many international bosses pick friendly opponents whose style corresponds to that of forthcoming competitive opponents.

Sanity prevails!!!!
After some of the criticisms levelled at Burley, this piece is like an oasis in the desert.
On top of all the financial considerations, a depleted Scotland side was the end result, and thus there should be very little to gripe about.
And it was big money for Argentine over here with it on the South American TV.
Presumably the SFA got a kick back for TV rights, so it has nothing to do with Burley and more to do with the greenbacks - the first priority for football these days.

OK, quite a few call offs as usual. Nothing Burley could do about that.

What worries me it that Burley doen't seem to have his "best team" in his mind yet.

Bertie proved beyond a reasonable doubt that if you don't decide on your core players quickly you will end up with nae shoes on in the snow.

Burley should be more open about what his team is going to look like, if he has his first choice players available.

Confidence is the man is at an all time low.

#3 Nobody could argue with your very salient point.
But, what with the guys who throw their toys out of the pram, plus the injuries that come along, let us concede Burley has not had it easy.
There will always be critics - one of my favourites was 'Rita the Critic' in the Okedokey Club every week or two in the Weekly Bews.
NOTHING could be done to please her, and we have too many Scottish supporters nowadays with the same outlook.
I keep saying it, like Rangers and Celtic are discovering, we don't have home grown talent anynmore that even come close to England's.
And, despite their crowing this week, they are still a brick short of a load in world football.
That's all I am saying.

With the players we have available the manager's job is primarily to give the players confidence.

If the manager himself is lacking in it, it rubs off on them too.

Is Burley the man for the job?

It is a big test for the champions today. Robson, Hartley and Donati (who has been coming onto a game of late) have joined the injury list, and Sami lacks match fitness.

We were already down to the bare bones and these latest injuries must give strachan quite a headache.

We need to get a big parformance out of maloney today. His last few performances have been singularly unimpressive and he needs to get the bit between his teeth today and show a bit of form.

I cannot ever remember Celtic ever being so badly hit by injuries...we were holding on strongly, but after losing robbo, hartley and donati, life is about to get more difficult.

Nevertheless, I expect the champions to get out there today and show that winning mentality and get the three points...at least our back 4 is the one constant component of the team.

Donati is definitely out for 6 weeks, but hartley, robson and mcgeady are all possible starters today it seems.

Helter Skelter,

There seems to be some confusion over how long walter has to win the title.
Murray said the other day that if rearrangerz went for "2 to 3 years" without winning the title, then it would probably be the end of the walter/ally ticket.

Today walter speaks of rearrangerz winning the title PLUS holding onto it for a period as being the criteria for ally to take over, and seems to hint that if Celtic win 4 in a row , that will be the end of that.

I have to say that I was a bit taken aback when minty said the other day that walter will get another 2-3 years to win the title. That could all add up to a total of 5.5 years of failure before pulling the plug...would the rearrangerz hordes put up with that withoutr seeing walter being replaced ?

25

Helter Skelter,

22/11/2008 09:52:33
If the rearrangerz come close again this season, but ultimately fail, then I would expect Walter to get one more season.

I think that is primarily down to financial constraints : minty won't be able to get anyone better.

That will off-course mean another treacherous journey through the CL qualifiers, and I read some weeks ago that the format for the qualifiers is being revamped for next season as a result of which it will be even tougher for a scottish club to get through.

If rearrangerz fail to get through, I think it's expecting a bit much of the rearrangerz hordes not to seek walter's dismissal.
26

Helter Skelter,

22/11/2008 10:14:25
I still can't get over minty's insistence that when john reid said "we are not a selling club" and "we are financially strong" that this was a swipe at rearrangerz.

It really does begger belief. The fact that minty has taken these remarks so much to heart , and dwelt on them for so long, doesn't say a great deal about the man's mental health, and I'm quite serious about that.

It's as though he sits there and analyses every word that comes out of reid's mouth and then skews the meaning to derive an insult to the rearrangerz.

The guy is just not right in the head. He's been driven round the bend by the way things have turned out since he took over at the dark star, and his latest rant is clear evidence that the guy needs help.
27

Phil McGillivan,

Gortahork, Donegal 22/11/2008 10:19:39
As usual the childish posters on here rather name call and talk about "Rearangerz" rather than worry about the name of Celtic FC getting dragged through the mud one again.

This week pitch invader John Murphy, 18, of Glenavon Road, Glasgow, was jailed and given a 5 year banning order from football grounds, one of the longest ever impossed in Scotland.

Again I say lets worry about getting CP in order before going name calling and preaching.

We just need to keep it going and we should win...the quality of our play in the final third started well, became a bag of, and then towards the end of second half we looked more of a threat again.

I'd need to see the boruc incident again, but I think mcmanus had got beyond him before the contact with dargo , and in any case, it would be a bit too speculative as regards whether Dargo could have collected the ball...even if he had got to the ball, he would have been in a goal scoring opportunity.
Both these things weigh against a red card.

The best chance of the match fell to Loovens and he really should have been on target.
