Hearts 4 - 3 Hearts Select (1998/2006): Neilson clocks up ten years in style

THE feelgood factor returned to Tynecastle yesterday as Hearts players past and present joined a crowd of 7,919 to wallow in nostalgia and pay tribute to Robbie Neilson for his ten years of service to the club.

The occasion of the loyal right-back's testimonial match provided a refreshingly uplifting afternoon for a Hearts support beleaguered by the current predicament of their club, as most of the heroes from the Scottish Cup-winning teams of 1998 and
2006 returned to Gorgie to face the much-maligned present team. Unsurprisingly, given some of the waistlines and silver hair displayed by the '98 legends, the current crop won 4-3, much to the chagrin of the crowd, who clearly wanted to make a point against the current regime by supporting the old guard, who were managed by Jim Jefferies.

Neilson, 27, played the entire 90 minutes for the cup winners, with the team made up of '98 players and captained by the outstanding, but corpulent, Steve Fulton in the first half, before the more athletic 2006 side came on for the second half. By then they were 3-0 behind to a Kestutis Ivaskevicius goal and a Jamie Mole double which had been greeted with muted applause, but strikes from Michal Pospisil, Rudi Skacel, who was at his extravagant best as he played up to the crowd, and Neilson himself, from the penalty spot, brought raucous celebrations. Fernando Screpis scored what proved to be the winner.

Highlights of the day included Fulton's surging run and shot, Gary Mackay's reckless tackle on Christophe Berra, forward Jim Hamilton's cameo at centre-back and the glorious late chance legendary striker John Robertson spurned to make it 4-4.

But one of the biggest roars of the day was reserved for 2006 captain Steven Pressley, who stepped off the bench in the second half and, in typical fashion, cajoled his team-mates through the closing stages of the friendly match as if it were a cup final.

Sounds liek a good game played in the right spirit. Well done Robbie, your loyalty has been recognised by your peers and rewarded by your team mates old and new.

Shame the famously loyal Hearts supporters didn't turn up in biger numbers for it though...

#8 You don't think 7919 is good for a testimonial?

Vaders Uncle,

I had a great day and took my grandson along for his first game. For a kickabout game it was competative and sometimes everso funny, the "Taxi for Hamilton" comment brought tears to my eyes with laughter. However the thought of Mr Pressleys after match salute to the celtic fans whilst wearing the capains armband still sticks in my throat big time and somehow could not bring myself to applaud, he lost my respect for that. Still apart from that everyone in my group had a great day. Next season is not too long away, HHGH.

#10 Did you explain to your grandson why the fact Elvis was saluting celtic fans was such an issue?
Did you explain what he tried to do for Hearts?

I heard he got a tremendous reception, which was right (IMO blah blah)

#7 This was nice romantic meal with boyfriend. I hope nice kiss was good for making him happy.

It is good you are in love but why you wish me death?
13

Who?,

#10 - i agree with your comment regarding pressleys salute to the celtic fans whilst wearing the capains armband. I supported pressley throughout his dispute and felt quite betrayed by his actions.

However i feel that the time has come for a bit of give on either side. Hearts need more coaches and an experienced centre back to help progress and take some of the pressure off berra, pressely needs a club and is looking for a coaching role.

Somebody needs to bang heads together and help pave the way for pressley's return. If hearts want season tickets sales to improve the return of the king would be a start.

Great to see Elvis get a good reception yesterday. As a returning captain of a cup winning side, it was what he deserved. True Hearts fans should forget the badge thumping incident and focus on what he did for Hearts, and what he went through towards the end of his time at Tynecastle. He always give his all for Hearts, and I for one would always be happy to see Steven Pressley back with us, however, as long as Romanov remains in charge, that is very unlikely.

Trivial and tedious as per most of my posts but note that all three scorers for the "goodies" yesterday scored penalties in our '06 cup win. Only Elvis did not oblige.
Most fun I have had at Tynie since November. Stevie Fulton who I was not a great fan of , looked the best player on the pitch.

To be fair there can't be much else for unemployed Hibees to do of a daytime after cracking one off during the ad break between This Morning and Loose Women.

#8 considering both stands behind the goals were closed 7,000 is a good attendance for a testimonial anyway.

great day out. was good to see some of the old guard. baggio was superb!! 0get him back!!
flogel and adam showed the still had the class too.

good reception for elvis despite being booed by a few idiots. he turned up to tynie yesterday while the team who pays his wages was playing at home in a crucial title run in. speaks volumes for the mans passion for hearts and for his mate. strachan dumped elvis in it that day. i was there and it was awful the way he reacted. i hated it and lost a lot of respect for the guy at that time. but he was put in a position and he didnt do that to p**s hearts fans off....prob to try and get onside with the great unwashed. i can see past alll that now. we fired him after all. would love to see him back and would prob be a good shout to get in at coaching level. true legends shouldn't be forgotton so easily.

great day and congrats to robbie neilson (who i have slated for many a year for being one of the worst footballers ive seen!!!) but i turned up yesterday to honour a guy who despite having no technical ability has always given 100% and more.

#25. Bring Elvis back as manager and I will renew my season ticket immediately. Otherwise my Wheatfield seat will be available. Funding Vlad as things stand would be sheer lunacy.

Great day yesterday, personally my favourite wise crack was the quip regarding 6 1/2 mins of added time.

Great to see so many hero's return, every single one of them a cup winner and still able to run let alone breathe!

Serg and Denis, jealousy is a terrible thing.

Fantastic day out.

HHGH.

#26 i was thinking that manager would be fine with me too. just get the guy back to get some pride, belief back into the players. would be worth a shout and would inspire and command a bit more respect than frail. (not that im a big anti frail man....think he has done ok)

would be a show stopper if hibvermin could rustle up thier last scottish cup winning team to play in a testimonial.
