Published Date: 03 December 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today brushed off an astonishing attack by Moroccan striker Abdessalam Benjelloun, who claimed the Finn's tactics are 40 years out of date.
Benji, currently on loan to Belgian club Royal Charleroi, launched his stinging criticism of Paatelainen from the sanctuary of a newspaper in the North African country. But today Paatelainen insisted the 23-year-old's outburst was borne out of frustration as the player's temporary move to Belgium hadn't worked out as planned. As a result, he has fallen out of the Moroccan national squad.

The Hibs manager was adamant there would be no hard feelings on his part should Benji return to Easter Road next month if Charleroi don't take up an option to make the loan deal permanent by January 10.

Benji, however, claimed that he'll go where he feels happiest even if Hibs and Charleroi don't reach an agreement, conveniently overlooking the fact he remains under contract to the Easter Road outfit.

In a rambling Moroccan newspaper interview, Benji was quoted as saying: "Mixu plays football in the style of the English game in the 1960s. He very much favours a long-ball system.

"But, with this style, technically skilled players like myself don't have too much of a chance."

Of his situation he said: "Maybe I will stay at Charleroi in January or maybe I will leave. They have an option to buy me then but if I want to go I'll go. It's a complicated transfer.

"It is possible that I will return to Hibs or even join another club. I will go where I feel happiest and most want to play. Even if the two clubs reach an agreement, I will choose to go elsewhere if I am not satisfied."

Paatelainen, however, insisted he'd happily have Benji back at Easter Road but admitted the talented striker would have to improve his work-rate considerably if he was to challenge Steven Fletcher, Colin Nish, Derek Riordan and the incoming Jonatan Johansson for a first-team place.

He said: "Benji is a good player and if he applies the work-rate to that talent he can be a fantastic player for any club. We value his talent but unfortunately the work-rate and effort has not been there."

As for the personal criticism, Paatelainen added: "I can understand his frustration. He went to Belgium looking to play regularly and that has not happened. He is concerned and I can understand that. The loan deal runs to the end of this year and we are looking to have him back unless something else happens. I don't have any hard feelings or negative feelings towards him, he is a fantastic player who has done well at times."

Paatelainen admitted, though, he was surprised Benji, who has in the past claimed he wants to play for Real Madrid, had turned his sights on him.

He said: "I believe it is totally and utterly borne out of frustration. We tried to do him a favour by giving him a chance to go on loan, to play and to play for his national team.

"It hasn't worked out as he hoped, he has fallen out of the picture, is frustrated and concerned but I am surprised he has chosen to channel it all towards me."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen was today highly optimistic that both Dean Shiels and Sol Bamba will have overcome the knocks which prevented them training at the start of this week in time to face Celtic on Sunday.

He said: "They've been spending time with the physio but it's looking good and they should be okay for the weekend."

Sounds like he is trying to engineer a move away from the leith nou tramp but by effectivly saying he will do what he wants when he wants possibly isnt the right way of doing it.

He is trying to engineer a move away from ER for whatever reason but he must be a complete idiot if he thinks this is the best way to do it, TM managed to get the best out of him with the style of play and the quality players around him, once TM left, JC and MP both seen the same thing "the work-rate and effort has not been there."

Get a grip Benji or you will find yourself in football wilderness with no decent club willing to take you, cue hearts! ;-)

I was always supportive of benji and was angry at mixu foor letting him leave as i think he's got real talent, but considering we already have a 4 strikers, one in riordan who bears an uncanny resemblance to benji at times, i just dont see a place for him anymore. I would still like to see zemmama back as i think we could do with someone more creative than shiels in midfield, but benji's dug his own grave as far as im concerned

What a tube Benji is!

Had he been a success at Charleroi and said he wasn't happy at Hibs, he might have a leg to stand on. You ran hot and cold at Hibs and you're not getting a game with Charleroi - next you'll be saying Charleroi's managers style doesn't suit your play.

Wake up and smell the Nescafe chump. If you don't have the attitude, your skill will only take you so far.

Real Madrid, maybe as a ball boy wee sacks!

how can you expect people to watch guys that cant get a game in the lowest league in england when along the m8 they are watching our players develop

English football in the 60's? 4 - 4 - 2 a formation we all know Mixu doesn't play.

Interestingly, Walter Smith went on and on in his after match interview about the direct style of play employed by Hearts --let's face it a team renowned all over the planet for hoofball dedication (and in n this instance very effective) - so well done on the result).

No need to compare Mixus tactics to English football in the 60's. Benji should have made his comments more relative to all football fans by saying "Hearts style throughout their history"

Everyone would have known exactly what he meant then "Hoofball"!
35

MacHibee,

03/12/2008 14:33:19
#30 - having watched the game, I have to hand it to Hearts who tried to play football on the deck. It was Rangers who were forced to play hoofball.

We're not denying that Hibs don't play as fluently as they did under TM, however we certainly don't play hoofball. Very few of Hibs goals are from long balls. I actually say if points we given for scoring the most asthetically pleasing, we'd be top of the league!

Benji is the name of a fictitious dog who has been the focus of several movies from 1974 through the 2000s, and is also the title of the first film in the series. His character is a small, lovable mixed-breed dog with an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time, usually helping a person overcome a problem. Joe Camp is the creator and director of the Benji films. Wikipedi

so no comparison then ?

Benji has been a disaster at Charleroi. One good game, one goal, then nothing. He has spent most of the time injured and got sent off the first time he was back in their team. Last weekend he also got sent off in a reserve game for mouthing at the referee (showing a degree of commitment rarely seen by him at Hibs). The chances of Charleroi taking up the option to but are not good and the return to sender sticker will be applied any day now. He has had a hard time on the personal front (divorced and father died) but he's going to have to get his act together if his next loan is not to Livingston.

A wee snippet taken from the story on the bbc website.

The 23-year-old endured a miserable time at Easter Road last season, scoring just once and suffering from a series of injuries and a loss of form.

In the previous campaign, Benjelloun scored 14 goals, including a brace in the 5-1 League Cup final win over Kilmarnock.

But his fortunes have hardly improved during his loan move to Belgium, where he has found the net once during another injury-hit period.

The last paragraph sums it up for me and I really hope Charleroi take up the option to sign him.

He goes on to say.

"The Belgian league is skilful and strong, with a high standard. It's different to Scotland where they play at 100mph. Here the game is slower and more thoughtful.

Big Mixu is only acting with dignity and not stooping to the boys level by getting involved in a slagging match.

Find it really funny that Hearts fans talk about us burying our heads in the sands #23 when thats all you gunts do over the city! You talk like there's a crisis at Hibs just now?

We might be having an indifferent season this year but dont go thinking your world beaters again cos youve won a few games and are in 3rd. Your main aim this season is making sure the banking crisis doesnt swallow up your leaders business because Cala might no buy your ground anymore due to the construction slow down and where will you be then?

Nae money, nae leader and a massive bit of land that you cant sell. Oh and I almost forgot not a great deal of players on your books!

Gloat all you like yams but we all know who will have the last laugh!

GGTTH

Benji no doubt has talent but i've always viewed him as a moaner and very lazy, When he had a good game he was a different class but outwith those games he was below average.

Bascially saying i'll go where i want if i don't get in the 1st team at either club totally disregarding he is under contract to Hibs and insulting the manager with his comments for me just further increased my doubt on the player he is.

The Belgian outfit should & will empty him and if Hibs should follow suit, a player with potential or not he's more trouble than he's worth.

Mixu is not worried by comments because there is no hope that Benji will be returning to Easter Road. Fletch, Riordon, Nish, JJ, Pinau, Campbell, Shiels, Yantorno.... even if Fletch goes there is still no room for Benji.

Like others who have posted, I too believe Benji has real talent and was frustrated when Mixu loaned him out. Remember back to his form in the 07/08 pre-season. If he could play at that level consistently he would be in the team ahead of any of the others. My frustration actually stems back to Collins resting him throughout Ramadan, thats when he appeared to really drop the bundle and never regained form.

He has however done nothing to prove he deserves to come back and if anything his attitude seems to have got worse. Sorry Benji, my only hope is that you start to hit some form whilst on loan so you are worth something when Hibs sell you.
