Published Date: 02 July 2009
HIBERNIAN have signed former Hearts youngster Danny Galbraith from Manchester United, but have been told to forget about trying to sign Sunderland striker Anthony Stokes on loan.
Left-winger Galbraith has signed a two-year deal on the day that Alan O'Brien's contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

Galashiels-born Galbraith, 19, signed for United on his 16th birthday and has represented Scotland at several age levels.

He told Hibs' official website: "I really enjoyed my time at Manchester United but the time was right for me to seek a new challenge with first-team football my main aim.

"I know that will be a tough task in itself as there are a lot of quality players in my age group stepping up from the successful Hibernian under-19 side."

Hibs manager John Hughes, who lost striker Steven Fletcher to Burnley on Tuesday, said: "Daniel arrives at Hibernian with a great attitude and the best of his career ahead of him. He was unlucky with injuries at Manchester United, but is very young with good energy about the park. He has his whole career ahead of him and has shown he can play a variety of positions on the left-hand side."

Hughes had Stokes on loan when he was manager of Falkirk and the player was a huge success, scoring 16 goals in 18 appearances.

But Sunderland are only interested in a permanent deal for the 20-year-old, who has not been able to establish himself at the Stadium of Light.

The Republic of Ireland international arrived at Sunderland in a £2 million switch from Arsenal in January 2007, and the club will be looking to recoup much of that fee if Stokes was to move on. Celtic were interested in signing the player after his loan spell with Falkirk, and it is expected that Hibs would not be willing to enter an auction for the player's services.

It was a shock to me when I first heard. I imagine in years to come people will remember were they where when they first heard the news that O'Brian had been let go. :-).

What a difference it is to have someone who can see the problem that is right in front of their face, and then.......(wait for it).... simply just sorts it out.

Ah, A O'Brien let go, I hope they let go of him from height, I hope Keenan was holding his hand at the time as well. ;>)

I jokingly asked the question a couple of days ago "would he survive past Thursdays first training session" well done Yogi, it also means we don't need to kit him out, that will save a few quid as well!

Good luck to him anyway, maybe he could go to hearts, he is quick and can run on either wing, and with his scoring ability he would fit right in with their strike force.

#12 I think that Jamtart is trying to convince himself that we didn't just pick up a good signing.

If his memory comes back he'll remember that Man U came calling and the boy thought about it for a split sec and was off. Hearts did get a fee.

However, that movie probably plays differently in Jamtart's head. "He just wasn't good enough for us, so we palmed him off to Man U". :-)

I see that, quite rightly, there is a lot of cheering that O'Brien has gone. However, he will have been paid off to cancel his contract so its not all joy. I guess that's part of the Fletcher money gone already.

However, in Rankin Stevenson and now Galbraith, the squad is well endowed with left side players. Not sure if McBride also plays up the also - maybe not but for the full back position there is Hanlon, Booth and Murray.

QUOTE FROM FALKIK FAN LATE IN THE SEASON AFTER KEVIN MCBRIDE HIT BACK PUBLICLY AT THE BOO BOYS

WHY ARE WE SIGNING HIM?

''Given the current league placing of Falkirk, fans as paying customers are entitled to question the competence of the manager and the ability of certain players.
Bringing in older players has been a failure with one or two exceptions.
Some criticism of McBride may have been over the top but believe me the majority of fans do not rate him.Neither did Celtic,Motherwell or Darlington.
Criticising Kevin McBride has nothing to do with wanting the team to stay in the SPL. Come on ye Bairns.''

I don't think he'll stay in Scotland.

I do think he has the makings of a good player but his wages were too high and could be better spent. We are having to resume responsibility for Benjis' wages and, hopefully, Zemmamas.

Truthfully now, do you not fear, just a little bit, for Hearts' chances this season? You've lost decent players and have not replaced them.

Csaba, don't lets forget was criticised by Hearts fans for most of last season and will be toiling to achieve a top six place. I think he will be found out this season.

The transfer window lasts to the end of August but I can't imagine that Hearts will buy anyone of quality.

I could be wrong of course.

Why were we so tolerant of AOB ?

Since day one when he came in as "Ivan with brains" we were all desperate for him to do well - even although it was obvious he was totally, totally useless. We all prayed that he would improve with every come back, but it never happened. Now we celebrate that he is no more. Was there ever a Hibs player who got so much slack from the support ?

Amazing.

John Hughes has already proved himself as a manager with some kudos. Mixu clearly missed the point and failed to sign any midfielders. Yogi's first signings indicate that he identified the midfield as a priority and he has acted quickly. Therein lies the difference between a clueless buffoon and a manager who actually knows how to build a team.

Still one or two positions needing filled but the initial signs are promising. Carry on the good work Yogi.

Ahh and therein lies the difference between the Hearts and Hibs support.

See i was talking football as that is what we pay our money to go and watch. You lot are talking balance sheets again.

You should pay RBS £20 on a saturday afternoon and ask if you can spectate whilst their accountants try and find their lost billions. Then you can all go to the pub at 5pm and discuss who was the best accountant that day........life can also be enjoyable you know

Who signed Galbraith ?
It was NOT John (The Mask) Hughes
He had been lined up by Petrie weeks ago. Pantyliner wasn't getting a say either (as he was still boss)

Strachan said freely that all the time he was at parkhead he gave a list of players he wanted at each "window opening" and the board took the shopping list and got him the players that were best value (if any at all).

David Murray was open (for once) about the fact that HE signed Basil Boli and the more recent Andy Webster.

The point I'm trying to make is that my lot aren't the only ones whos manager has only partial say in which players are BOUGHT.

More examples for the non believers - Try Nish and Rankin - they were both purchased while FFFHibs didn't have a manager in place......who chose them ???????????????????????
45

Laird O'Gorgie,

02/07/2009 10:52:33
#37 And therein lies the problem for Hibs.
Being debt free hasn't helped your team one iota - in fact the reverse is true. Now Hibs face dwindling crowds, a team built up with rejects and regularly coming in between 5-7th place in SPL.
As for owning yoiur own training ground - a comoplete red herring. Where would you rather train at Riccarton on a University site or Ormiston with only a pig farm for company.

I was merely asking the poster to talk about football rather than finances as I have that info.

If you want to deal in facts, then I'd try to make your examples relevant.

John Rankin was a Mixu signing, signed for Hibs over a week after Mixu was given the Hibs job.

Colin Nish had been looked at by the previous Hibs regime and a pre-contract agreement was put on the table. Mixu then decided that HE wanted Nish straight away and Hibs therefore paid cash to Killie for the Player that MIXU wanted.

With regard to Galbraith, Mixu identified him. As he did the Moroccan defender and the laddie from Blackburn. Mixu left, Hughes came in. Hughes decided that he didn't fancy the latter two and cancelled the arrangement. He did fancy Galbraith and kept that agreement in place.

Sorry to confuse you with FACTS.

Instead of asking questions of Hibs who have clearly managed the fans money wisely. You should be asking questions of Vlad. Putting this 'nutter' in charge is akin to putting a starving polar bear in charge of the seal cubs. Laszlo has given him a list of five signing targets, not one has been secured so far. It's a one-way street with Vlad, transfer money, interest payments, now strip sales, ST sales. Vlad smiles and just scopes it up, meanwhile over in Lithuania Vlad is spending the equivalent of a small country's annual output on his favorite basket ball team. Wisen up.

Yet again you make the mistake of thinking that Hibs training ground is something to brag about.
For the record, the site was originally a coal pit, then a dairy. The dairy was demolished and few grass pitches laid on top soil that was spread on the rubble. In the localle, you will find a grain merchant, a pig farm, an animal experimental station and Ormiston/Tranent.

Not sure if this has been clarified as I cant be bothered reading all the posts but to answer post 11. Danny Galbraith was always going to Man Utd but only when he was 16. He went to Hearts by agreement with Man U so he could finish school etc, then down to Manchester. He is not a Hearts reject, more accurate, Hearts were babysitting him.
He has recently had a problem with his groin which required surgery and has struggled at United since. He is an excellent player, used to play for Hutchy Vale in the same team as Paul Hanlon, quick winger with a definite eye for goal.

Is that why they paid us compensation to take him? £50k was a lot for 'babysitting' a player.

By all accounts he has lost a bit of pace and hasn't been anywhere near the same player since his injuries, but potentially a good signing by Hibs. certainly can't be any worse than O'Brien.

69...Yes I agree it is a lot of money, if that figure is accurate. But the fact is he was signed by Man Utd at 13 or 14 and they wanted him to play for an i initiative team as opposed to a boys club. I heard too that he'd lost some pace since his groin problems and was told by Man Utd that he would never make it at that level as a result. More than happy with him at Hibs I must say....1000 times the player O'Brien was!

One benefit is that we don't have to vacate our training centre at 2pm for the Uni to use it.

#75 Hearts have a Partnership with HWU, which is benefical to both and allows both parties to grow and progress. Now are the Hobos in partnership with a cow and some chickens down at the old cow shed your calling a training centre ? Hearts have a world class acemdey. The Hobos have stuck a new roof on an old cow shed so what you own it ? What will the sell on value be ? and please do tell who will want to purchase it ?

Where as Hearts and our world leading facilites in Partnership with HWU get all the benefits for a fraction of the cost, leaving you lot in our wake yet again.

In this instance "renting" has many more benefits to owning it out right.

On the signing of young Danny, he is a Jambo btw and I suspect will do a Mikey and come over to Tynie where the real moneys at.

Do tell who is likely to want to ;urchase your training centre, and what benefit do you get over owning it compared to being in Partnership with HWU ?
81

Rolland,

Should be purchase of course before some smarty pants highlights that too.

"Laszlo has given him a list of five signing targets, not one has been secured so far."

Maybe you would like to share this list with us since you are obviously privy to this information?

I can guess the list won't include Falkirk rejects as Hibs have signed most of them.

#89 Eh? Why would we want to sell it?

You sell everything else, Peewee would see his grandmother if he could.

Of course you will want to sell won't you want to move to state of the art training centre at somepoint ?

#92 Who cares we have a world class centre of excellence, with a leading University, you lot are in a converted barn, next to the pigs, no comparision really.

Lets talk about signing, Hobo's doing well on the Falkirk rejects front, Hearts casting the net further a field have signed Jesus.

Yogi must stay.

#90 No wonder you need a nurse. You guys have completely lost sight of the fact that Hibs are supposed to be a football club, where success is counted by league position, European games, cups etc. Next thing you'll be saying is that Hibs have a better swept car park than Hearts.

What is your point ?

Miller, Hartley and Hughes are all possibilities still.

Did Yogi honestly hand the tash, a list of Falkirk rejects, the Falkirk fans are delighted you lot have taken a gash manager and the worst of players of their books.

#105 - very good.

Hughes swithering on Aberdeen, Miller interested in Hearts and Hartley not going to Greece...

Vlad will be playing a waiting game, before signing at least two of these players.

We're generous at Hibernian FC. Let's let the wee lambs of Whinecastle have their moment.

Let Hearts be the big team, we will content ourselves being the better team.

Let Hearts be happy at having a manager at all after their previous string of pearls! Everyone else steals our managers, well apart from Mixu (who was good enough to gub the Jambos)!

Let Hearts bask in the glory of grinding their way to Europe (yawn for everyone else). We gubbed them last year, for what it's worth, and that was a laugh.

Let Hearts wallow in their huge wealth of -£30 million or whatever. We've got f*** all (well maybe a couple of million now), but hey!

Let Hearts go to the huge hotel behind their stand for a quick pint! We'd rather go to the local thanks.

Let Hearts are rely on a Black Jesus for next year. We have the young stars of Man U and Arsenal to help.

Let Hearts youngsters be 'really good'. Ours just win league and cup doubles. The future's green & white.

Let Jambos be Pat Mcginley fanatics. It's good to be loved. We love Mickey Stewart, he's great!!!!

etc etc...............
