JUHO MAKELA could earn a surprise recall to the Hearts squad after a virus forced Calum Elliot's withdrawal from Scotland under-21 duty last night and rendered him doubtful for Saturday's visit of Dundee United.
Stephen Frail, the club's interim manager, is hopeful of welcoming Frenchman Christian Nade back following a pelvic injury, but Elliot's absence from Scotland under-21s' victory over Finland leaves him toiling for fitness this weekend. Frail admitted today that may necessitate Makela's promotion, despite the Finnish forward having made only four first-team appearances this season, and none since last October.
"He'll have to come into my thoughts a little. I won't cut my nose off to spite my face when it comes to strikers and Juho has always shown himself to be a good professional in his time here. We'll wait and see how the striking situation looks," explained Frail.
Hearts attempted to offload Makela during January's transfer window but could not find a club willing to match his salary, which is in the region of £5000 per week. Now, he could be set for a timely recall with the club still striving to reach the SPL's top six.
The 24-year-old played in Tuesday's reserve defeat by Rangers after scoring both goals in the second string's 4-2 loss to Dundee United last week. Teenage striker Gary Glen is also likely to enter Frail's thoughts.
Lee Wallace played for Scotland under-21s, who defeated their Finnish counterparts 2-1 last night, while Larry Kingston, Saulius Mikoliunas, Audrius Ksanavicius and Eggert Jonsson were also on international duty.
Meanwhile, Eduardas Kurskis and Tomas Kancelskis have returned to FBK Kaunas with the Lithuanian season due to get underway this weekend.
