Man Utd 4 Hull 3: Vidic vows United will keep foot on gas in Glasgow after Hull scare

NEMANJA Vidic has warned his Manchester United team-mates there must be no repeat of the defensive shambles that almost caused total humiliation against Hull City at Old Trafford on Saturday.
When Vidic side-footed home Wayne Rooney's corner an hour into the Premier League encounter to stretch their lead to three goals, no-one imagined United would end up clinging on for a 4-3 win.

Yet that is exactly what transpired as Bernard Mendy h
auled the Tigers back into it with a well-taken effort before earning the penalty Geovanni rammed home to test United's nerves, and Celtic will hope that they can expose similar gaps in the visitors' defence when they come calling on Champions League duty on Wednesday evening.

In the end, the damage at Old Trafford was no greater than a failure to give their goal difference a shove in the right direction. But Vidic knows United were perilously close to a draw that would have been disastrous for their title aspirations.

"That must not happen again," he said. "Nobody could believe it. I wouldn't say the last few minutes were hard, but we were under pressure.

"We should not be losing goals like that. There is no need to worry but we have to think about it because we must erase the mistakes."

Vidic denied United had allowed an element of complacency to creep into their play, even though, for the third time in a week, Sir Alex Ferguson was critical of the number of chances that went begging.

"We knew Hull were a good team," said Vidic. "They have surprised Arsenal already this season and they have 20 points, which says something about them."

Ferguson could take some of the blame for a cavalier attitude which had his three £30million strikers, plus Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs on the field at the same time. In piling forward, United left big holes at the back, offering Mendy in particular enough space to cause mayhem.

By the final whistle, a breathless crowd had been treated to a contest that will live long in the memory and provided further evidence that Hull might be around for a good while yet.

The visitors had already served notice they would not be shaken off easily when former Rangers striker Daniel Cousin levelled Ronaldo's third-minute opener.

But when Michael Carrick and Ronaldo, whose four goals in two games takes him on to seven for the season and 99 career goals for United, struck before half-time there seemed only one winner, a position Vidic's strike only reinforced.

"It was a strange game," admitted Carrick. "Being so close at the end did not really fit with how the game went. We created so many chances and played some extremely good football but we shot ourselves in the foot with a few errors. In the end it was a bit crazy really." It was the first time a visiting team had scored three times at Old Trafford since Chelsea in 2005 and the first time anyone managed three and ended up on the losing side since Brazilian striker Ronaldo's famous hat-trick for Real Madrid two years before that.

However, given the downfalls of Arsenal and previous leaders Liverpool, winning was imperative, with Carrick doubly delighted given he marked his return to Ferguson's line-up for the first time in seven weeks by getting on the scoresheet.

"It was nice to score and get off the mark," he said. "It was the longest I have played in three months so hopefully that is going to get my fitness up ready for the coming weeks."

However, Carrick may find himself back on the bench this Wednesday, with Scotland international Darren Fletcher pencilled in for a return to United's starting line-up on "home" soil against Celtic at Parkhead.

A more notable inclusion could be England international Ben Foster who is expected to finally make his Champions League bow after a catalogue of injuries over the past 18 months.

With seven points from three games, victory would see the defending champions into the knock-out phase with two games to spare, although, as United discovered to their cost two years ago, Celtic can never be discounted in the east end of Glasgow

"When you step away from it, we have won the game and got three points," mused Carrick. "Now we can move on to Celtic."

We saw their power , but they are not without a degree of vulnerability.

Can The Scottish Champions do them again ? Noone gave us any chance the last time, and in the end we not only beat them but trumped them on the head to heads.

I can't see us winning 4v0, but I don't think they'll be as cocky as they were the last time they game to Glasgow.

If all our players hit their best form, we certainly have a chance, a good chance, of taking all three points. Our players will be well prepared by the most successful coaching staff in Scotland and they will have the backing of 50 odd thousand fans ensuring that the bhoys do not walk alone.

And we'll have learned a thing or two about them from OT, in particular, Neville's pace down our left hand side, and how Rooney is often looking for Neville when he picks the ball up in the middle of the park : as soon as we see the ball heading in rooney's direction, our left back should be tracking Neville's movement as we were caught out a few times by that kind of movement.

Possibly Donati for Hartley...he's come on as a sub the last couple of games and looks as though he's coming onto a game...it wouldn't surprise me a hell of a lot if he gets the shout.

Football is a strange game and the best team doesn't always win... indeed if that were true, we'd all be millionaires and the bookies would be bust.

Look at what happened at OT ...supposing McGEADY'S strike had sneaked in and Van Der Sar failed to touch Caldwell's over the bar and the two berbatov goals had been correctly disallowed ?

These are the margins which turn a game one way or the other....I don't think Chelsea could recover from 2v0 down at OT...at least, 9 times out of 10 they wouldn't.

Sir Awex is no mug, and although Man U were run away winners in the end, he will be accutely aware of the tight balance that existed until they went 2v0 up.

They got the breaks at OT, who's to say we won't get the breaks in Glasgow ? We might get a couple of off-side goals, and Artur could pull off a string of top drawer saves. That's the way football goes.

Off-course, they are the better side, but then I would conceed, just, that rearrangerz are a better side than Saint Mirren....anyone agree with that ?

Hey Paul, what's with the new moniker? Have you been tracked down in Dormansland?

Tough game for Celtc FC but I think they will finally break their scoring duck in this season's CL. My prediction 1-1.

Oh and HS I see you think WGS will go for the patented Wattie 4-5-1 formation. Maybe he should call him to get the low down on how to play it as it hasn't worked so far.

Helter Skelter,

There is no such thing as 'the' 4-5-1.

It is a basic description of a team lines up, but each team will have different emphasis as regards, pace, skill, height, strength, defensive quality, attacking quality, adaptability to 4-3-3....it goes on and on.

'Walta' drew a lot of criticism from around europe because his 4-5-1 had no flexibility at all...it was simply 5 defenders playing in front of the back 4.
It took reqrrangerz to the uefa final, but quite honestly there was so much luck involved that it could not be relied upon as an effective model....time and time again rearrangerz got the rub of the green, and it's not always true to say you make your own luck : sometimes you just get lucky, and it was that more than anything else that took rearrangerz to manchester...they were off-course taken apart in the final by a team that is finding life very difficult in the champions league.

Strachan's approach to 4-5-1 is much more dynamic, much more flexible, and it only sits as a 4-5-1 when the opponents are approaching our final third.
As soon as Artur gets his hands on the ball our wide men are sprinting forward so that it becomes a 4-1-2-2-1 , and if we get over the halfway line , the middle two move up quickly to form a 4-1-4-1 , if we lose the ball on the flanks, the middle two sprint back, if we lose the ball in the middle, the flankers do likewise.

It's much, much, more technical than Walta's drudgery. It requires great discipline, fitness and awareness at all times to operate effectively. Against a team like Man U, there is no margin for errror, and operating a 4-5-1 as Strachan likes to means that the concentration levels have to be intense at all times...we don't just sit back and try to stop them in the hope that we get a lucky break...as rearrangerz showed, if you are very lucky, you might just get away with that at uefa level, but at Champions League level you need to have a helluva lot more in the locker to survive.

Hugh, Sheridan ?

I've swithered over it, but he didn't do enough against Hearts to persuade me. Having said that, he was run off his feet in the first half running on to through balls which weren't that great, and he did well on a few occassions to force a shy inside their final third...against hibs, when the through ball was good, he showed good composure...after rounding the goalie, the angle was ok but there was a defender sprinting for the goal line and a young head might easily have over-compensated for that and blown the chance...and it was on his left foot.

I think I'd rather start with SM because of his ezxperience, but after 60 minutes , bring on the fresh legs of Sheridan.
McD has good pace, and he will, if nothing else, keep their back 4 busy running around, and they will be starting to tire at around the 60 minute mark.
He's also a poacher par excellence, and if there is a stray ball in the box, I'd rather he was on the end of it more than anyone else.

Lots of players get caps when younger ? I don't buy that really...but when you seem to suggest lots of young players get 19 caps for Germany, well, it's so rediculous it's scarcely worthy of retort.

I said on these threads myself last week that since coming back into the team, Hinkel seems a changed man : better pace and more confident on the ball.
Looks like he could be another Caldwell in the sense that Strachan has kept the faith when others around had lost hope, and he has been proven right again...I think you'd have to look long and hard to find a Celtic fan who wouldn't want Hinkel to start on Wednesday night based on recent displays.

Minty is simply trying to defelect away attention from Scotland's Shame.

He is trying to equalise ordinary abusive exchange with racism and sectarianism.

For example, aberdeen fans are known as the sheepsheggers...abusive yes, but actually the eberdeen fans don't bother all that much about it : Neil Lennon referred to them as such over the PA sytem at CP after his final match at Celtic, and there were no official complaints.

But that is just a bit of larks. They call us wedgie soap dodgin' bassas, and so whit...it's just a bit of banter.

But Minty wants to muddy the waters and promote the idea that racism and sectarianism , what Scotland's Shame are notorious for, should be seen in the same light.

His plants in the scottish media, the ones that son of the manse Graham Spiers has warned us all about, will do what they can to assist minty in this endeavour.

However, it just won't wash. UEFA don't run 'stop bad language' campaigns', or 'stop slagging each other off' campaigns.

UEFA run 'drive racism out of football campaigns', and it is to that end that minty should apply himself.

Mabey had Walter tried to be a bit more imaginative with 4-5-1, he'd have made the last 16, got hammered in the last 16, and then wouldn't have asked for two league extensions.

Celtic Football Club are a historically important outfit - world renowned and famous for their attacking football. A brand of football that makes all Scots proud.
Unfortunately, they are also the reason that sectarianism is rife in Scottish football, their religious bigotry knows no bounds - and before you think they are alone in such disgusting behaviour, they are not - Their rival fan base is almost as shocking, there is no good side and bad side their is only the divide -
Nevertheless, it is Europe this week and therefore those Celtic fans who like the divide may sing about other issues other than the IRA and terror - thankfully Rangers arent playing or it would be broken bus windows and problematic experiences for police...
Celtic 2 vs Man Unt 0
May the vast majority of decent Celtic fans enjoy the game
