ALLY McCoist is confident Rangers can score a vital away goal against Panathinaikos in Athens to keep their Uefa Cup dream alive.
SPL leaders Rangers were held to a 0-0 draw by Panathinaikos in the first leg of their Uefa Cup clash at Ibrox last Wednesday. But Rangers assistant manager McCoist, who jetted out yesterday with Walter Smith and the squad to Athens, insists they have shown on their European travels this season they can score away from home, having bagged three in Lyon and two against Stuttgart.

Rangers have kept eight successive clean sheets and McCoist believes their defensive form is the foundation for them to progress – as long as they rediscover their goalscoring touch.

McCoist said: "A lot of people were a little bit disappointed with the initial result at home but I think we can take a lot from it. We had chances to win the game but the most important thing if we didn't score was not to lose and we didn't concede.

"The lads have been looking quite solid, so if we can continue that defensive form then that'll be smashing. It allows us to be more offensive because we've got a clean sheet. Their coach got it spot on when he said the game is perfectly poised because with them not scoring an away goal it doesn't make it that great a result for them either.

"We've already shown we can score goals on our travels this season in Europe, so we're looking forward to it and I think we're more than capable of scoring over here. The Lyon result was arguably one of the clubs best performances in Europe, to score three goals over there was marvellous.

"But to score two goals against the German champions Stuttgart was also great. So that shows we can travel anywhere in Europe and we're confident of scoring goals."

Daniel Cousin was included in Smith's squad for tomorrow's match as the Gabon international waits on Fifa's verdict over whether his £3 million move to Fulham can go ahead.

Cousin came on as a second-half substitute against Panathinaikos last week and McCoist revealed he has been working on his fitness and could be used against the Greeks.

He said: "It's a bonus we've got Daniel available, the more players we have available means we've got a better chance.

"Daniel's fitness wasn't a concern but we're aware we have to keep it up and he's being doing extra training and his stuff with the lads. So I wouldn't imagine it'll be a problem."

The Gabon international, 31, has played for Lens and Rangers this season and needs permission from Fifa to join Fulham.

Manager Walter Smith said: "We thought we would get a decision this week but it seems they have asked for more time to consider all the details.

"Cousin will be travelling with us to Athens and we will have a look at things in terms of who will line up once we are over there and the players have been checked for any problems."

Big Ally McCoist will be able to get some great kebabs over in Greece - better than the crap he used to eat with Durranty and wee Baz's big brar.

Coisty needs to eat more kebabs. No enough chins yet.

Fine photo of Cousin on this story - if a picture ever said "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here", this is it...

9 - I think Boyd was lining up a hair augmentation. He looks like a prime candidate for late twenties 'hair issues'....

come off the glue, you're ootae europe
soon followed by the scottish cup
and a free fall in the league

that all seems more likely than you getting even 1 goal over there.

However i will have my fingers crossed and hope for a Scottish win, even though you all don't want to be scottish when you go to europe

Grab a goal???? Come on Ally - we'll get 2 or 3. Big Boydie will get amongst them, and wee Nacho will be running off him all night. the Greeks won't be able to handle us.

Easy 2 or 3 nil.

I am not sure I agree with WS regarding Cousin.
Kris Boyd is an out and out goal scorer who will get you a goal if he has some support up there! He is also a player who has committed himself to Rangers, whereas Cousin has not!
How can Walter Smith play Cousin before Darcheville,Beasley,Novo,Boyd or any other player is beyond me.
I know Walter Smith knows his football, he also knows his team, but it seems strange to play a player who isnt sure where he is at the moment, especially in such a high profile game.
Rangers dont get results with one up front, it isnt working, so they may as well try something new...

Interestingly, while the Celtic threads are getting hundreds of posts, the Gers are scraping together a few dozen! Does this show up the on-line Rangers supporters as extremely fickle, or is Donald Findlay on his hols?

As usual the MOPE's show their true self by hating Rangers more than they love Cynical FC.

The Usual Suspects can't help talking about the big club in Scotland all the time.

Only one week after Kooooh-Saaaaaahn joined Ragz he made it abundantly clear he wanted away from The S.W.A.M.P.

Just in case any team colleagues, management or fanz were left in any doubt at his desperation to be rid of them, here we can see him exuberantly lining up for this photo shoot as they prepare to leave Glasgow airport en route to Athens.

And just in case the readers here missed it,Koooooh-Saaaaahn rubs salt into the wounds by sporting his head gear with the famous Champions Celtics sponsors motive stuck right up in front.

A Ragz player advertising Champions Celtics sponsors, whilst en route to an all important Ragz european game !!
Thats a Nike tic sign, that Ragz at this time do not need.

Still, you can never get too much of the tic!

No doubt Umbro will be wanting to say something about that just the same.
Poor player management that....sloppy.

Sad.
Isn`t it.

#32 - in English please?!

However I think you are trying to make some petty link between Cousin, Nike and Sellick. Can I firstly point out to you that Nike are not Sellick's sponsor, Carling is. Secondly, players can arrange deals with any manufacturers for boots, shinpads, HATS, etc etc. You'll even find this true of Sellick players - but I'm sure you'd rather believe that Aids and co. give all their spare cash to charity. Thirdly, where were you when Rangers were lambasted by Sellick-minded folk for having a shirt deal with Nike (several years ago)?? I thought all Nike gear was made in sweatshops and this went against the Sellick ethos. Or only when it suits you?

Only sad thing here is you.

Oh, and who's top of the league? Need a clue?

Given that this is probably Ragz last match in Europe this season,Ragz fanz really would be hoping to have been going into this with a bit more pizzaz.

Walter "TT"`s Smiling Ass(assistant) seems to be making it quite clear that he would go with want-away Kooooh-Saaaahn.
He seems to be Wallys mouth-piece since 7,000 Ibrox heaving hordes booed Koooo-Saaaahn ONTO the pitch last Wednesday.
When Walter "TT" was questioned on that in his after match telly interview he smirked quote,"I thought they were booing me" end of quote.
A clear indication of Walter "TT"`s contempt and views on Ragz fanz feelings.
Or is it !

Very next game big Boydy starts in his first from the getgo since Abraham was a boy.

Would you Adam and Eve it !!

Ragz` manager rockin mid season simply because of crowd pressure and displeasure of Watties team choices is a worry for Ragz fanz that they could be doing without prior to the game tomorrow.

I reckon that Walter "TT" will feel safe in the knowledge that at 3000 miles distant,he feels far enough away from the Ibrox baying hordes to brass neck it with Kooooh-Saaaahn.

Sad.
Isn`t it.

Sure he is.
