FORMER Hibs manager Alex McLeish has backed under-fire Mixu Paatelainen to turn things around at Easter Road following the club's troubled pre-season campaign, writes Barry Johnston.
McLeish, who spent three years in Leith before leaving to manage Rangers and then Scotland, said: "I have a soft spot for Hibs after my time there.

"There's no doubt it will be a tough season, because the expectations at Easter Road are always high. But you have to bear in mind the calibre of players Hibs have lost in the past couple of seasons.

"It won't have been easy for Mixu during pre-season because the pressure is on you whether it's a friendly or not.

"But I really hope things pick up for the big man and I'm sure it will. He's an honest guy and I'm sure the players will start to respond to that."

Hibs kick off their SPL campaign against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Saturday.

Mixu will be feeling soooo much better after reading Big Eck's testimony.

Taxi for the Baby Face Finlayson lookalike!

Let's wait until the season is at least a month old, before we point any bones in Mixu's direction, for the sake of Hibs he needs to see the season out..

I think he should look to sign a goalkeeper. The team is quite strong otherwise and could challenge for third with the right blend, plus the training facility should help.

Yes, the training facility will help this winter, but not, apparently, to improve our goalkeepers.

If the Hibs board are looking for any success this season why not give the manager some money to spend.

They have after all pulled in a few quid over the last 18 months.

Mixu should have been given some money for players that he wants to bring in and add to the squad he inherited. That is if the boys upstairs care about improving their team.

Saw a decent young(23) left sided midfield player last night playing for Peterborough United against Man Utd, called George Boyd. Would not be out of place in most SPL sides going on his performance last night.

I thought the movement from Miller and Novo in the first 45mins was good considering the quality of the opposition. Lafferty had some decent moments as well at times. The second half was a complete embarrassment.

I would rather not get beat from anyone 4-0 at home,, friendly or not. As for the tic who cares.

Just going on our history of signing players carrying knocks. I suspect the lad was tired, back and forth from London a couple of times laye last week, as well as maybe being behind the rest of the players in fitness.

Hopefully Hibs can sign a couple of players before Friday too..

I wonder who else will pop out of the woodwork to support Mixu. Who's next? Alex Salmond?

Then when you think about it the only thing we want is for the squad to do their bit.

Give the man a break; it's a new season; he's made a few changes and would like to have been able to make a lot more.

#26 i agree, Mixu has to be given time to prove what he can or cannot do, bringing in a new Manager at any time during this season would not benefit Hibs, Petrie needs to release some of those millions and sign some quality players

What does McLeish know anyway.

He left 2nd bottom Motherwell
Got Hibs relegated
Rangers didn't renew hsio contract
Was Average at Scotland
Got Birmingham relegated

The mans credentials are not exactly gleaming

Mixu is bookie fav to be first SPL manager to be sacked. Could even happen before saturday, the man is a legend as a player and a JOKE as a manager

#32 I think you will find that Hibs were pretty much relegated by the time McLeish was appointed Hibs manager thanks to Duff Jim.

It pains me to say it but he did OK at Rangers considering Dick Advocaat spent every penny Rangers had before he was appointed.

I also think he was a decent manager for Scotland and he was certainly an improvement on Berti Vogts.

Quote from Wattie after Saturdays game.....

"it was 4-0 and could have been a lot more"

You were thoroughly battered at HOME...

Never mind....Kaunus tonight....are your finger nails down to yer knucles yet?

"As Rangers are the major force in the game, I think it is useful to post here"

Lol, good one. Out of Europe tonight, Celtic will wrap up the league by Christmas.

Dear oh dear, you must be simply depressed.

McLeish has nipped and tucked...bobbed and weaved...ducked and dived...and jumped ship at every occasion, when it appeared that his inadequacies were going to be pared to the bone for all to see. In that resect, the boy done good, saving his own skin; the boy's a survivor, but he'll be caught out pretty quicksticks, I feel.
He's unable to cut it at top level, and needn't try to deflect attention from his own shortcomings by claiming that someone as equally inept as he will make the grade.
