McManus insists United will test Celtic's resolve

Published Date: 22 May 2008
TEN years ago a teenaged Stephen McManus turned up at Celtic Park expecting his favourite team to sweep to victory over St Johnstone and secure their first title win for a decade.
And that's exactly as it seemed to pan out, as Henrik Larsson and his team-mates secured a 3-0 triumph that is etched in the memories of Celtic fans.

Celtic will almost certainly win another title, with McManus as captain, if they beat Dundee U
nited at Tannadice tonight.

They hold a four-goal advantage at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League over Rangers, who face Aberdeen.

However, unlike his teenage self, he knows it is not as simple as turning up at Tannadice and winning.

"Just being a fan you think when the team play St Johnstone to win the league it would be easy," the 25-year-old said.

"It is not until you are in this situation you realise that these teams can be tough going.

"Dundee United are a very good side and it is going to be a very tough game. Everybody is expecting both teams to win their games but sometimes it doesn't work out like that.

"Pittodrie and Tannadice are two of the hardest places to go. I think it will be one of those times when you can go into the history books.

"It is times like these you really relish. We have a chance to win the league but it is important not to rule anything out."

While Celtic face a difficult match against a team who have not lost an SPL match at Tannadice since their Boxing Day defeat against the Hoops, the players also face the tough task of lifting themselves following the death of Tommy Burns.

The squad attended their first-team coach's funeral on Tuesday after his death from cancer at the age of 51. But McManus is determined to use Burns' memory as a factor to rally his troops together.

"It is about keeping composed and not allowing your emotions to get the better of you," McManus said.

"It has been a helluva week for everyone. It will probably add an extra 50 per cent motivation. In life you just have to deal with these things and that's the way it has been for us.

"The one person we can do it for is Tommy Burns and, even if that is a bit of cliche, that is what we will try to do."

Sean Dillon insists the controversy surrounding Dundee United's recent defeat to Rangers has made the Tannadice players even more determined to win tonight's clash.

The Tangerines felt they were robbed by a series of contentious decisions against the Gers by referee Mike McCurry, who failed to award them a certain penalty, chalked off a legitimate goal and also refused to red card Daniel Cousin for a blatant headbutt.

That provoked furious reactions from United boss Craig Levein and chairman Eddie Thompson, who lodged an official complaint with the SFA on Tuesday.

United have had to wait 12 days to pull their boots on again but, contrary to some of the crazy conspiracy theories which are being circulated, Dillon insists the Ibrox injustice has only served to heighten their desire to end the season on a high by beating Celtic.

The Irish right-back said: "We were not happy about what happened at Ibrox and we felt a sense of injustice so we're glad to have this game so we can get it out of our system.

"It has been a long time waiting for it to come around because of the season being extended.

"It's often hard to keep people focused when there's a long period between games but I can honestly say that the lads have been on their toes. We're well up for it, we have been buzzing in training and we just can't wait to play."

Dillon insists the title race is of no interest to his side.

"All the talk has been about what the game means to Celtic but we're not interested in that.

"If we get beaten and I have to go away for my summer holidays on Friday with that hanging over me I won't like it.

"The rest of the lads are the same, we're in it for ourselves and we want to win.

"It's going to be a full house and there is big interest in the game so it's the kind of occasion we want to be involved in.

"Last season we finished by playing Motherwell in a meaningless game on the final day but this season there's a lot at stake for both teams – I know what I'd rather."

It's Dundee United that we're going to play, not barcelona for pete's sake.

Yes, it will be a tough contest, but let's not lose all sense of perspective. Off-course getting all three points will require a top performance, but Celtic have the goods to produce that level of performance.

We have the better players and we are going for a title...all the talk is how difficult this will be for Celtic, but none of the press reports that I've read have paid much attention to the scale of the task that United face in stopping us winning.

Quite simply , United will have to be at the top of their game to do that and a big slice of luck into the bargain.

You could put the mortgage on Celtic creating more scoring opportunities...the quality of the finishing will determine which team wins.

I`d rather be playing Aberdeen than DU at the minute as Utd are well organised and have some handy players in Flood, Swanson and Hunt may even replicate skippy !
The Dons are poor although they can raise their game against us. Going down the local turf accountants for a correct score double !

Celtic beat St Johnstone 2-0 in 1998 to clinch the title, so the match obviously isn't etched in the memory of Gavin McCafferty!

I guess when you look at Rangers record at Tannadice over the dozen visits or so....it's easy to see why you would rather be at Pittodrie than Tannadice!

If you look at our record at Tannadice and that of Pittodrie.....our Tannadice record is far superior....

It will depend on how many Utd players are in beach mode that will determine the scale of the task we face!

Either way a 1-0 win for Celtic will see the job done as a 5-0 win for Rangers is beyond them!

Never mind....enjoy the fun!

It will be a hard game but Celtic have shown that they can handle it in the last month and will probably win.Any team who can win in games they know may be their last chance deserve credit for having the bottle to see it through.

I also think Rangers are due some credit for their season and believe they played well enough to have won at both hibs and motherwell but did not get the bounce of the ball. As for the boring defensive tag they are the top scorers in the league so something must be working.

Too close to call with any certainty.

I expect the Gers and tic to win by the single goal tonight, with the tic crowned champions on goal difference. Will be back after the matches to offer congrats to the champions.

Tick...tock...tick...tock...

Just a few hours until the destination of the 2007/08 SPL title is decided, and you can almost feel the apprehension on these threads, which are strangely silent.

My personal viewpoint is that Celtic will do enough, which probably means that Rangers won't win, since I've already stated that I don't believe that both OF teams will pick up a victory tonight.

Personally, I'm comfortable with Rangers position going into this one. I've basically accepted that we're probably not going to win this race, and in any case it's no longer in our own hands. Very much like 2005 in fact, which was a nice unexpected bonus. I was much more nervous in 2003, when the weight of expectation rested heavily on our shoulders.

For Celtic, tonight is all or nothing. A last chance to earn a tangible reward for their season, and to prevent a barren campaign. Rangers, conversely, go into tonight knowing that they've won the CIS Cup, will very probably add the Scottish Cup to it, have reached their first European final in 36 years, and have pushed Celtic to the very limit in the league race. By any objective measure, particularly when juxtaposed against the two previous seasons, that adds up to success.

Anyway, bhoys and bears, buckle down for a bumpy ride. If Celtic win they deserve the title. If Rangers are able to take advantage of any Celtic slip, then they too will deserve the title. Either way, let's remember that it's only a game of football.

Light up the darkness.
25

Brother Walfrid,

Getting back into the title race this season has been almost like winning a title.

To come back from the dead, when all appeared lost, has been tremendously satisfying. I've already gone through a lenghty period this season believing the title was over, which would dampen considerably the disappointment were it all to go awry tonight.

Still, it would be such a shot in the arm if we can pull this off.

Come on the Celts.
26

Daillyman,

Well done Celtic and Gordon Strachan...

Well done to Utd for making a good game of it and making us work our socks off to win the game...

To all the Rangers fans....enjoy yer hols...cause I know myself and every other Celtic fan will....

The score at Pittodrie suggests Aberdeen gave Rangers one helluva game....did Rangers get mugged or did Aberdeen deserve their victory?

Now...it just leaves me to say...

STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS!

Barnacle Bill,

Congrats to Celtic, you deserved it. To win your last 7 games on the bounce and under that pressure is an impressive achievement.

In answer to your question Paulmac. Rangers had more of the game but didn't really create many opportunities so didn't do enough to deserve the win. Two goals from dodgy defending of long freekicks. Cousin looked like a lazier version of Negri except without any goal threat and missing the happy-go-lucky easy- going charm of Negri (guess who didn't want to be there). ;-}

Anyway, congrats.

I'll repeat my post from the other thread here, since it has closed, and I don't want anyone turning up here and asking "Where is BE?"

My warmest congratulations to Celtic, who have gone to a difficult venue and won the SPL title in the most appropriate way, by winning the game.

As a Rangers fan, this is how I would have wanted the title won. Nothing would have felt worse than Celtic slipping up, but Rangers not being able to take advantage of it. At least I now know that nothing Rangers could have realistically done at Pittodrie would have made any difference, so there are no regrets.

A fine run of results at the end of the season means that Celtic's championship win is well merited, and did not depend on any fatigue on the part of Rangers. Celtic merely responded to the situation in the way that you would expect of champions, and have laid rest to the argument of who are Scotland's best side.

Well done to Gordon Strachan on achieving the much-coveted "three-in-a-row", a tremendous feat, and I trust that there will now remain no further questions regarding his future as Celtic manager.

From a Rangers viewpoint, I remain proud of a campaign that has brought a CIS Cup, with hopefully a Scottish Cup to follow, a tremendous UEFA campaign, and an SPL season that tested the current champions to the limit. Hopefully, we will return next season with a few new faces, and a little more by way of quality and skill.

In the meantime, enjoy yourself Bhoys. Your team has earned it.

You are giving that no-user too much credit. What has Boyd done to Wattie to merit missing out to such a bum as Cousin week after week.

Come on the gers. There is still a cup final to be won, hopefully with Cousin watching on the telly.

Roll on August. What will we all do with no interest in the Euro finals next month.

It certainly is a puzzle about Boyd......is he slipin it to somebody's daughter at Ibrox?

I said weeks ago...Boyd not gettin a game...when you look at the bad run of results Rangers had is more than a strange situation....there is something wrong behind the scenes!

It wouldn't surprise me if Boyd left!

Aye - well done to celtic.

They deserved it for there form in the run in..winning the two OF games under heavy pressure was a big ask,so you have to give them a lot of credit for that.

As for rangers... a heartening amount of perspiration, not enough inspiration..lets be honest, we've been running on empty for a while, and tynecastle away was the last time i thought we put in a good league performace..really our away form was the undoing.

I'm off to beat the dug, kick the wife etc ;-)
