Motherwell 2 - 1 Aberdeen: Motherwell cap dramatic return from the depths with Uefa spot

Published Date: 12 May 2008
TWENTY-FIVE years to the day since the highlight of his own playing career when he set up John Hewitt for the decisive goal in Gothenburg which helped Aberdeen win the European Cup Winners' Cup, Mark McGhee savoured his finest achievement as a manager yesterday when Motherwell clinched third place in the SPL.
After taking a seat in the main stand at Parkhead where he watched Celtic defeat Hibernian 2-0, McGhee also knew the shift put in by his own players on Saturday against Aberdeen had been sufficient to earn the Lanarkshire club a berth in European fo
otball for the first time since 1995.

While plenty of Motherwell's players are deserving of a pat on the back for the part they've played in a remarkable return to prominence, perhaps the most influential beneficiary of Motherwell's transformation from relegation candidates to European hopefuls – they finished tenth with 38 points a year ago, 18 fewer than they've already accumulated this term – is their manager.

While McGhee is understandably quick to highlight the contribution of his staff, particularly in coping with the numbing loss of Phil O'Donnell, the truth is the former Reading, Wolves and Brighton manager showed the others the way by giving the Fir Park side a fresh context in which to play.

"The players have had to deal with a lot and they helped each other by showing a tremendous spirit to get through it," recalled McGhee. "There are boys who are still quite disturbed and emotional about the events around Christmas and they have done well to produce performances and win points."

If his acquisitions were shrewd – Stephen Hughes added guile in midfield throughout the season, while Chris Porter, as happened against Aberdeen, scores goals even when he doesn't contribute much else – McGhee's talent for getting more out of the footballers who were already on the books when he arrived is bound to make the manager a summer target for clubs with much deeper pockets than Motherwell.

What's been particularly impressive about the manner in which McGhee has managed a relatively small squad of players is his willingness to adapt.

In the aftermath of O'Donnell's loss, the Fir Park pitch became a quagmire. On the rare occasions in the dark of winter when the surface was playable, it was no longer possible for Motherwell to produce the subtle, one-touch style of play which characterised the first half of their campaign.

McGhee had to adapt, and the success of his re-design was again evident against Aberdeen when Motherwell played a lot of long, diagonal balls into the corners of the pitch and launched attacks from wider areas.

"It was a game where Aberdeen had nothing to lose," he reflected. "It wasn't always pretty because we all know about this pitch. We had to play in a direct manner and hit a lot of diagonal balls to Chris Porter. He didn't win many early on, but it opened up a bit after Darren Smith came on and he got the first goal which was fantastic."

As is so often the case for Motherwell, Hughes was the instigator. He broke down the right, turned onto his left foot and crossed for Porter to set up Smith. Up until then, Aberdeen had performed adequately without showing a cutting edge. The introduction of Sone Aluko changed all that. Darren Mackie showed good composure on the ball and set up the winger with a nicely judged ball over the top of Motherwell's defence. Aluko's stinging left-foot volley flew past Graeme Smith.

Having got back on level terms, Aberdeen could have won the match when Stuart Duff's cross was missed by Aluko and fell nicely for Barry Nicholson at the back post. The midfielder's stabbed shot was clawed out of the goal by Smith. Nicholson immediately claimed the ball was over the line and TV pictures would later demonstrate the goal should have stood. In what's been an appalling season for Scottish referees and assistants, the Pittodrie club are entitled to feel as if their quest for European football was sabotaged just as badly as Dundee United's campaign.

Thanks to that let-off, Motherwell re-grouped and Hughes and David Clarkson set-up Porter for the winning goal eight minutes from time. Attracted by an admission price of £5, the ebullient home crowd of 8,500 hailed a victory which brooked no argument about the imminent return of Uefa Cup football. By 2.15pm yesterday afternoon, Motherwell's mood of optimism was converted into celebration.

Yet another controversial refereeing decision. Of course, referees don't have the benefit of multiple action replays.

Yes, as it turns out, it was over the line. Motherwell should have had a penalty before that as well, but it wasn't given. The best team still won on the day.

This is in fact is the real contentious refereeing decision of the weekend but the media only encourage the anti- Rangers angle and fuel the paranoia of the serial deniers from the eastend !

Have Celtic had more favourable decisions than Rangers or any other SPL team this season ? This is for credibility if you can`t answer the question truthfully then you do not have the power of reason and are therefore unable tae debate !

Levein is a fool and only looking for excuses as his team blew the Uefa spot over the last few weeks ! The penalty claim was dubious but if given it would have been soft and the deflected off side goal was in fact off side as the player ran across the ball and was active ! End of ! Face the truth and embrace reason !

Here's a good idea - let's turn the comments section on a Motherwell vs Aberdeen report into another wonderfully exciting Old Firm Paranoid Delusional's debate - yipee! The best thing about commenting being suspended on Rangers and Celtic stories is that the worst oxygen thieves on this website have one less outlet for their repetitive nonesense.

On Topic: Great achievement by Motherwell - to finish 3rd with the smallest squad and one of the smallest budgets in the league is just staggering - until the deterioration of the pitch, 'Well were arguably the best footballing team in the league. The mini-league with Hibs, Utd and 'Well for the Uefa spot has been excellent and played in a good spirit - credit to all 3 teams and hopefully the farce of the cup losers getting a place in europe over the league's 4th team is sorted out before next season.

The paranoid bears are always good for a laugh. Absolutely everyone in possession of eyes and a brain knows the hierarchy of refereeing decisions in Scottiah football.

1. Rangers
2. Celtic
3. Rangers again
4. everyone else

Gutted for the Dons today, if Nicholson's goal had stood, we'd have won the game and been in pole position for a miraculous UEFA Cup spot and one of the most tense, exciting final days ever, as Rangers would have had to come to Pittodrie and beat a team in great form with everything to play for. But we've been robbed by the officials, just like we were at Parkhead a couple of weeks ago.

Scottish refereeing is a joke, both corrupt AND incompetent, and the only reason we don't have video evidence is that the SFA and SPL both know that the main losers if Scottish football was fairer would be the Old Firm.
15

Rev. S. Campbell,

Bath 12/05/2008 09:58:13
#13 It's most ungracious of you to exclude Aberdeen from your "mini-league". If not for the ref and linesman yesterday, the Dons would have been joint 3rd with Motherwell this morning, and more than played their part in making the UEFA Cup race exciting.

(Indeed, if we had refs worth a damn in this country, Dundee Utd would probably have been level with them both on 53pts too, with Hibs only a point behind and all four teams very much in it on the last day.)

13 You have a point, and congratulations to Motherwell for their achievment. Mark mc Ghee has them good attractive football.

As for the other games a good performance by Celtic and considering where hey were a month or so ago a great achievment to take this league down to the wire.

As for the Right Rev Mc Curry, hang your head in shame you cheat.

Magnet if you cannot admit that both those decisions were wrong then you are either blind or deluded. Celtic have had a few fortunate decisions, but on most of them there was an element of doubt either way, such as Mc Donald's first against Rangers. There was no doubt on either of those decisions. As for booking De vries for dissent, another disgrace to further compound his (Mc Curry's) awful performance.

Craig Levein was right in his comments, and I for one would gradually contribute to a fund for paying the very large fine that will be heading his way. I am sure this will all be subject to the usual SPL and Media whitewash.

I wonder if they will be foolish enough to appoint Mc Curry to the game in Pittodrie next week, or even worse our game at Tannadice.

17 No I don't believe they have and outside of the Rangers fraternity I don't believe that anyone else does either.

There has been over this season a huge camapaign amongst the Rangers fans, trying to point out a bias towards Celtic. Every game is trawled through with fingers pointing at this tackle and that goal and this decision. And you call us paranoid and persecuted.

I have admitted all along this season that we have had a few contentious decisions, but blatant cheating, was never part of it. Mc Curry is a disgrace. Levein is an honest manager who expressed his disgust in an eloquent, if emotional way. He did not resort to foul or abusive language, he just called it as the rest of the viewing public, outside of the Rangers fans see it.

You might not like it but it is TRUE.

#17..in a mind that thinks dundee utds penalty claim should not be given and that their goal was really offside ..and that the worse decision this season was celtic being awarded a soft corner..then a mind like that will see celtic as getting more decisions..but to call the conclusions of such a mind fact is dubious to say the least..x

#17 You're an idiot who doesn't understand the laws of the game. Alexander was totally visibly moving in the opposite direction to Robertson, who was 20 yards away from him. According to the laws of the game, Robertson was therefore in no way interfering with the keeper and the goal should have stood. (The fact that the linesman changed his story about it is telling.)

And if you think that penalty was dubious in ANY way, you've just utterly destroyed any tiny lingering shreds of credibility you ever had. Here's the BBC commentary:

"Weir brings him crashing to the ground, surely a penalty... [replays shown] well that's a certain penalty, there's no question about that, David Weir is a lucky man. Clear contact with the player there."

I disagree with Levein that it was a definite red card, there was another defender beyond Weir who MIGHT possibly have made an interception, but every other word he said was true.

Well done to Motherwell in winning the race for 3rd. Naturally dissapointed for my own club but overall the team that deserved the place the most got it.

As for the refeering at Ibrox on Saturday... Nothing short of disgraceful, the only people on the planet who will try and tell you there is no bias towards BOTH sides of the OF from match officials & leauge officals are Rangers & Celtic supporters.

The rest of us know it happens and e get on with trying to contend against it but heven help anyone if a contentious decision goes against one of the ugly sisters eh? Then its conspiracies, bias towards the other half of the OF, paranoia..... I wish both would just get lost and play somewhere else. Our leauges prestige may suffer from their loss but in terms of a fair & competitive leauge our game would advance in leaps & bounds.

Only problem is that no one else wants the two of them... When asked hypothetically if they would like to see the OF in the Premiership the votes were returned 20-0. A unanimous NO. Tells its own story that... Therefore we are sadly stuck with you both.

Couldn't agree more Swello. It's beggars belief that some people could stoop so low but they do, and they will and it's his problem. It's hard not to be pleased for Motherwell though, nobody else really deserves 3rd.

Thats a bit much I think but I would agree the decision in the Motherwell game was a shocker also.

I'm a 'Well fan so I'm biased, but I've just seen the highlights of the "goal" on Setanta for the first time.

I was expecting it to be obvious from comments afterwards that Nicholson's shot had completely crossed the line, but if those were the only two TV angles of the incident, then it was anything but that. I even went through it frame by frame, and there's never any clear daylight between the post and the ball. I know there wouldn't be at that not-quite-goal-line angle even if it was *just* over the line, but that's how close it was, nothing like a foot or a yard or whatever Dons fans are claiming this morning.

Even if the linesman was the same yard or two from the goal-line (in the opposite direction) as the camera, there's no way he'd have been able to say for sure, given one full-speed look at it, that it was completely over the line, unless he had an idiot savant-like grasp of geometry.

So it seems to me it would have been just as controversial to give it as not. Refs shouldn't be giving goals they're not 100% certain about, so until we allow TV evidence it was the correct decision IMHO.
26

numpty,

Dublin 12/05/2008 13:04:57
(Whilst not wishing to trot out the "these things even themselves out" cliché, Motherwell did also have a clear penalty shout overlooked when Porter had the shirt almost ripped off his back at a corner...)
27

Rev. S. Campbell,

Bath 12/05/2008 13:28:34
#9 You must feel a complete idiot now that McCurry has openly admitted getting both decisions wrong on this very website. Though in fairness, it looks like they were both the linesman's fault. If you watch the highlights on the BBC site, the second replay of the penalty incident clearly shows that McCurry was totally unsighted (for which he gives a fair and reasonable explanation in his interview), and it's the linesman who should have spotted the blatant foul. And it was the linesman who flagged against Swanson's goal too.

To the Rev S Cambell.

Aberdeen only got to the top 6 by a "goal" scored by McGuire against Inverness in the last minute which even Jimmy Jaffa said was 5 yards offside and a dubious decison in the last minute against Falkirk when the ball was out for a goal kick. Selective memory loss ?

29

Rev. S. Campbell,

Bath 12/05/2008 13:36:41
Ooh, a bitter Hearts fan. How are you enjoying your season climax against Gretna, St Mirren and Inverness? I'm sure, after all, that Hearts didn't have a single decision go their way all season.

Selective memory loss is the norm on these threads M8...where have you been?

Well done to the 'Well! Looking forward to my hometown boys rally Europe next season. I hope McGhee realizes how good he has there in Lanarkshire and takes a crack at the UEFA Cup next season.

#32 I saw your full name, but figured that like so many Hearts fans, you're so bitter about Aberdeen - for so long the usurpers of what deluded Jambos see as their rightful place as Scotland's third force - that you were simply delighted to see Motherwell claim the UEFA spot at the expense of the Dandy Dons. If you want to avoid confusion, you might want to think about changing that "Jambo" part to something less stupid. I mean, what sort of an adult still calls themselves by a silly playground nickname anyway? Grow up, laddie.

Good luck to Motherwell in Europe, they have certainly deserved their 3rd place spot, all a bit sour grapes from tango man, sooner we get rid of this tube the better - for all the jc apologists res squad size etc, look at Motherwell - wish i had some optimism for next season...

#33 coming from someone called the Rev. S. Campbell I will take that as a compliment. Mind say your prayers before bedtime. Oh what a lovely day up here in Dandy Don land as all your compatriots are spitting feathers about the "goal". Oh happy days (is that gospel enough for you Reverend?). Oh by the way here is a wee song for you;

#35: Do your research before trying to be clever, not all of Motherwell's five changes against Celtic were unenforced. Quinn is out injured until next season, Hughes hadn't trained all week (having had to be taken off the weekend before), and McCormack has just been mince since Christmas so has spent his fair share of time on the sub's bench recently.

Really, the only one of those five changes that was any surprise to anyone who watches Motherwell regularly was bringing in the young keeper-- and even that was always going to happen at some point, as Smith's a great shot-stopper but his indecisiveness at crosses and corners had been costing vital goals in recent games.
