Raith Rovers 1-2 Rangers: Cuellar blow as Gers limp to tepid win

THE sight of Carlos Cuellar hirpling from the field only 27 minutes into his first appearance of pre-season would have proved as painful for Walter Smith as the horribly limp victory his team produced in their final warm-up game before their midweek Champions League tie against Kaunus. Over-stretching in a challenge, the Spaniard immediately gestured that he could not go on.

Smith must be fearing the old Ibrox ailments curse is descending once more. In addition to a host of long-term casualties – most notably captain Barry Ferguson – Kevin Thomson did not figure against Raith after twisting his ankle in training and Lee McCulloch was not involved because of a throat infection.

But the condition of the club's player of the year Cuellar is of greatest concern, with a calf problem sustained yesterday now likely to keep him out for a fortnight.

"He will miss Wednesday and could miss the second leg," Smith admitted. "He was an excellent player for us last season and of course we will miss him, particularly after losing Barry Ferguson for so long. But we have strength in depth and cover for him."

At Kirkcaldy that was provided by Kirk Broadfoot, who moved inside from right-back as Christian Dailly was brought on to fill the berth he vacated. Rangers conceded a goal only two minutes later. And for an hour, the trip to Stark's Park was a grizzly affair for Rangers in every possible respect. And to Smith's credit he didn't skirt round that fact. "There were no plus points apart from the fact that now means pre-season is over," he said.

The Ibrox men seem far from being in a state of readiness for their midweek curtain raiser. They were devoid of invention or drive against opponents cuffed 4-0 by Dundee United only last week. Alarmingly, even before Cuellar was forced off, they seemed strangely soft and get-at-able in defence. His withdrawal may well have contributed to Raith's strike, but not as much as Allan McGregor did. He caught a header from Iain Davidson in the air, then saw it squirm from his grasp as he landed and was helpless as Kevin Smith tapped in from close range.

The Rangers manager consistently defended his one man up front formation last season by maintaining that it was not numbers in attacking areas that dictated a team's potency. Yesterday, his forwards proved that point. Kris Boyd partnered Jean-Claude Darcheville and Kenny Miller pushed up from the left but the trio appeared completely out of sorts.

The encounter turned when Boyd and Darcheville gave way to Nacho Novo and Andrius Velicka and further life was breathed into the visitors' ranks when Kyle Lafferty and Daniel Cousin replaced Charlie Adam and Miller in the 76th minute.

Novo made an instant impact when, eight minutes after appearing against his first Scottish club, he fastened on to a through ball from Miller that followed a neat flick from Velicka and beat David McGurn with a confident drive which the keeper got his body in the way of but could not prevent going under him. Lafferty made an even quicker impact. He had only been on the field for little more than a minute when he thundered down the left flank before sending a ball to the back post that Cousin scrambled in. "He showed good pace and helped lift us," noted Smith.

However, there seemed something cursed about the day for Rangers from the moment the teams stepped on to the field. You could hardly tell which side was which… a theme that was to develop over the two hours that followed. Rarely, indeed, can there have been a more blatant example of a colour clash. It was a white-out. With their other change kit yet to arrive, Rangers sported their second strip of white jersey with aubergine arms while Raith Rovers, in their wisdom and to the chagrin of referee Steve Conroy, chose to kit themselves out in half-white, half navy blue strip with navy-blue arms. Conroy swithered about delaying kick-off and asking Raith to sport a suitably different outfit, before reluctantly agreeing to let the issue go. Only until the interval, though, after which Raith re-emerged in an all-navy top.

Off the field too, demarcation proved problematic after the Kirkcaldy club sold tickets for the home end to Rangers supporters on the understanding they would not display colours. That was never going to last and quarter of an hour in, under police instruction, there began an exodus from the home end as Rangers supporters were shepherded to the other side of the ground.

Within minutes, however, the passageways and perimeter areas of the stand were clogged up with bodies as it seemed half the end wanted re-housed. Matters turned farcical when a couple of Rangers supporters being led round got into a shouting match with fans in the main stand and it was decided to order all visiting fans in the home stands back to their seats. Rangers fans could be sitting uncomfortably in their own home stands over the coming weeks.

There is plenty of cover for Cuellar and Thomson and McCulloch should be fit for the Kaunas game. Hopefully the team can up their game a bit when it comes to the real thing.

I have to say, as a Rangers fan, that Walter, IMO, has made a mess of improving last season's squad.

What was needed up front was the sale of Cousin and the purchase of a quality replacement. In midfield, a permanent deal for Davis and the addition of one more flair player. And in defence, an additional year for either Weir or Dailly (but NOT both), and an investment in a talented younger player.

What we have is a plethora of moderate strikers and one young man who's signing is difficult to understand; a gaping hole where our midfield should be; and the same defenders as last year, except they're all a year older.

Will I run up the white flag, Walter, or would you prefer to do it yourself?

Richardinho,

What happened to the 30 million pounds ragners supposedly got from Europe last season? Plus the Hutton money and the Setanta money, Rangers should have 40+million quid to spend on players.

Shouldn't they?
4

BEMUSED EXILE,

27/07/2008 00:27:15
I doubt if that's a serious question, but I'll make an attempt at an answer anyway.

RFC's total European income last season was probably a lot closer to £20 million. But income does not remotely equate to profit. The profit from Europe, after all overheads, is probably in single-figure millions. Even throwing the Hutton money into the pot probably only creates an actual "profit" figure of around, at most, £16 million.

£6 million of that has gone on three strikers, leaving £10 million for a club that started last season with official debts of £26 million, a figure that SDM surely wants to reduce.

So, I can't see there being very much left at all.

Rangers have spent a fair bit so far (more than Celtic, for example) and I have no doubt more will be spent.
6

KILBOWIE,

Amazingly downbeat posting, Bemused, considering that your team has still to kick a ball in anger. Pre-season kickabouts tell us absolutely nothing, & while we are all a bit BEMUSED by Walter's signing policies, we will know nothing until the real action starts.

bemused, you sound pure gutted, i am too, Smith has made the wrong choices again, he done it too last january, maybe last preseason as well, its becoming a habit, poor transfers and sticking with his pals dailly, mcculloch and adam.he said after today, the perfrmance was worse than previous games in germany, how bad must it have been today? coz i seen the other game on setanta and heard first 2 friendlies on Rangers World, and they were terrible. Now the big man is out, i fear that he goes with dailly and weir at centre, i thought broadfoot was good next to weir against better opposition than kaunas in schalke.its poor.

I would imagine it's the injuries to key players that are more concerning for Rangers fans....
10

chazbud,

27/07/2008 01:05:57
no not really, the poor standard of player in the squad is a concern, and the fact our manager has seen different priorities for the team from everyone else.
11

paulmac,

surrey 27/07/2008 01:18:19
It does seem odd to purchase 3 strikers.....when you already have 3 possibly 5 others on the books....

That would suggest...there are/were plans afoot to sell some of the strikers already on the books....

However the fact there has been no movement out so far before the CL game...and the league less then 2 weeks away....has shot any game plan to pieces to bring midfield players in....

The injuries being frequently picked up....has compounded the whole situation...

The 3 striker purchase....just doesn't make sense...especially the amount of money spent in doing so!
12

Richardinho,

27/07/2008 01:28:58
'RFC's total European income last season was probably a lot closer to £20 million'

That's odd given that the figure that was announced was 11 million.

'Rangers have spent a fair bit so far (more than Celtic, for example)'

Celtic don't need to spend as much money as Rangers this summer. They already have a strong squad in place.

Early season squeaky bum time is upon us again. Surely even a patched-up rusty mis-firing Rangers can dispose of Kaunas, hopefully buying us time and a kind draw for the 3rd round. If we get to the CL proper the cheque book will come out again, otherwise it's going to be a long, tough season and the heady optimism of last May will be a distant memory....

OK let's look at this way: You play a constantly boring, demoralising 4-5-1. Total anti-football the Ibrox way.

At the start of a new season you want to strengthen your squad-who do you buy given your plan of 'attack'- defenders? midfielders?, after all that is where you concentrate your players.

No!! you buy forwards!!! Doooh!!
26

Daillyman,

You are correct we got what we wanted and we will live with it.

WS got us to 3 finals, winning 2, and 2nd in the league in his first full season back as manager.

The off season has brought some new strikers in, but we are in need of some midfield reinforcements.

We must try to offload some of the surplus that we have in the squad to free up some money for wages, I think this will be done before the transfer market closes.

The coming CL qualifiers are a must win, even with the injuries the other players who will step in are expected to do a job for us. Hoping that we get past the Hearts 2nd 11, and that some midfield players can be brought in.

Our aim is to make the CL group stages, but the priority should be to win the SPL title this coming season

A narrow minded comment, but should we expect anything else.

BF is injured through no fault of his own, we just have to get on with playing the matches and using the players at the managers disposal for the time being.

Buffel ? Yes he was sold, good skills but injury prone, played what in last 2 seasons maybe 10 matches. I am sure in you're eyes he might have been the answer, but not for me.

The only thing certain about Rangers this season is that many fans are realising that the king has no clothes, Smith's jaikit is on a very shoogly nail.
He got a free ride on the back of a team ready made by Souness previously, my granny would have trophies with Souness's legacy, time for a clear out at Ibrox from Murray down............before it is to late, don't feed me the fairytale of all the money Murray has invested at Ibrox, I happen to think the opposite is nearer the truth, and he has done very well from Rangers.

Forget Murray, who has nothing to do with the players on the pitch.

Look at WS's record as a manager. I accept the fact that he is old school and sometimes the football is not pretty.

But, he gets the best out of players. He may not be a Shankly, but of the same mould.

When WS is in charge, no team thinks they will have an easy game.

Yesterday wasn't great to be honest and we seemed to have picked up where we left off at end of previous season - i.e devoid of attacking impetus. Admittedly its early days but signing policy looks imbalanced. Why go for Loovens/Shittu when its evident to everyone that we're desperate for some full backs. The fact that Broadfoot, an honest trier, is still getting a game bears this out.Up front i still believe Miller will be decent signing and always rated Velicka at Hearts. Lafferty who knows but better judges of player than me seem to think the guy has something. However what was evident yesterday, and indeed pretty much all of last season, was our glaring lack of creativity in middle of park. Ferguson being injured doesn't help but would much rather have seen us invest what money we had in some width in the team. Some supporters seem to think that Beasley is the answer but he's far too lightweight & McCulloch and Novo is not what is required. Davis is woefully overpriced but in a market where the spectacularly ordinary Andy Johnson can go for upwards of £10 mill then perhaps £4 mill is what is required. We just have to hopefully get Kaunas out of the way on Wednesday and hopefully get some reinforcements in.

Dhims on here crowing have short memories (no surprise really) as it was only after the point when Vinegar scored that they stopped calling for Strachans head . The glue addled post at #34 stating bright, attractive football is not what the peasants in our local think. If he'd have lost the league last year they'd have been hounding him out the door faster than they can claim their giros'.

Lest they forget their own preseason results haven't been stellar but listening to some of the usual suspects on here you'd think the Champions League final was on the cards.

Keep the faith!!
46

BOBO UMBONGONDO,

27/07/2008 09:31:32
BTO,did Scotland qualify, did Everton win anything, was it a job for the boys at Man. Utd, was Watties "success" despite Wattie and more to do with Souness's astute signings, as opposed to Seb, Prodan McCulloch and the cast of other diddies that are Watties signing record.
Your previous comment about forget Murray is a clear indication of your grasp on the reality of the situation......none. Rangers deserve better a lot better, failure in the transfer market because of £500,000, is in Rangers case a disgrace, how bad is it when you cannot negotiate a deal because of that amount, we are a big club aren't we ......??

Nelson at Trafalgar, Patton in North Africa, the Riot Survivor in the war against Raging Ranger Syndrome.

All great generals, all great leaders of men and all fully committed to their cause.

Every one of us could tell you that the key to victory is ensuring that every one of your people, to a man, hold the belief that any short term pain, no matter how great will fade into insignificance in comparison to the glory of victory.

By keeping this belief amongst your people, you build the foundation.

Compare this with Walter (no surname and in whom we trust), when his troops where losing heart, when they lost sight of the finishing line, when they needed their general to reinforce their overall vision - what did they get from Walter (no surname and in whom we trust), the deliverance of what is now referred to as "Walters Mantra" - "Its ok to fail cos yer tired". After this mantra was used daily, the battle was over and his army of the damned was left completely devastated. So devastated that their is clear evidence that a recovery is impossible.

Nelson,Patton and the Riot Survivor would have had Walter (no surname and in whom we trust) hanged for treason.

After last week's defeat to Dundee United, the sight of the Rangers team sheet made me reach for the calculator, but how wrong I was. Lets not forget there were 2 teams on the park and Just as most people said Rangers played badly how much of that was down to Raith Rovers Playing well, give some credit where it's due. For 70 minutes we more than held our own against a top Rangers team, Davidson and Campbell snuffing out the Rangers strike force. If Kaunus had reps at yesterdays game I fear for Rangers in midweek.

69 - WIth QOtS in the Uefa cup this season, I am not sure that Scotlands co-efficient could handle ReaRangers failure against Kaunas.

However, it is evident that Walter (no surname and in whom we trust) wanted to have pre-season games against "fodder" to build up to the Kaunus games. The German amatuers, Clyde and Raith, were in his view the games in which ReaRangers would stroll through with Kenny Misser rattling in a few goals.

Unfortunately it has backfired spectacularly for him and he has understimated the effort those teams would apply.

His players still don't seem able to lift their effort against teams who make them work for their living (see "walters mantra"), he still gravitates towards the Wattenaccio for tactics and Kenny Misser is demonstrating 100% what we already know - he is a striker with an astonishingly poor strike rate.

There is now no more preparation time, and his chronic underestimation of Kaunas will see them fall at the first hurdle this time out.

It would appear that it has had the desired effect of keeping the most irrational, obscene and/or libellous posters away - at least for the moment.

Off to bed now - will this thread still be open in 8 hours time?

64 - its academic. The sooner both sides appreciate and acknowledge that the more - shall we say - 'traditional' members of the fan club have their heids up their pupeshutes and need to wake up and realise it's the 21st century, the better.

Neither side is innocent. Both are guilty.

The entrenched support of Old Firm are Scotland's shame.

Quick question to decent Rangers fans (so no bigots need reply)

How do feel your pre-season has gone? I mean don't you think Walter could have organised a few tougher tests against some top quality sides to prepare Rangers properly for the CL Qualifier?

Good result for Celtic last night thanks in no small measure to two great saves from Artur one of which was stunning.
For the last 20 minutes of the first half we could hardly get a foot on the ball after a very bright start.

The balance of play didn't change very much in the opening period of the second half, but the defending was much more assured and organised ...Mark Wilson looked great at left back and McManus was solid.

The goal was a corker : beautifully flighted left foot cross from Hartley and Venegoor lost his markers to bullet a header into the net , goalie absolutely no chance.

The game was pretty much full on, and if we can match that second half performance in our three away CL games, we WILL get points on the road this time around.

chazbud,

#96, no, as someone said before, these games should have been fodder, trying to help misser score goals, trying to get darche fit, trying to improve daillys skills etc etc, it has backfired horribly, do you know Walter said he was happy with preparations in Germany, unbelievable, we are playing Liverpool next week i think, that will be interesting without King Carlos.

chazbud,

#99 thank you

#102 "stunning save" does that make him 15m now? lol remember no top club wants him, hes not good enough, hes a good SPL keeper, probably second best in Scotland.

PS Porto Reserves. Can Vennegoor keep saving you in the last minutes?, thats a few times its happened.

I think your concenr is reasonable. Kaunas scored 7 over the two legs in the last round of CL qualifiers. Also Lithuania at this time of year will be baking and not an easy place to go and get a result.

Rangers have to do the business at Ibrox IMO. And I think they will get through this one but only just. The next round will be a stiffer test and I am not sure they will make it through that one with some of the injuries and the new signings yet to bed in.

#11 i couldnt have said it better, they are scoring goals for fun, they dont have injuries galore and they have a wee left foot magician who scores from free kicks(something we dont have at all), i think we will scrape through this and the next round will be like the champs league proper, it will be solid. With current squad im not confident, i think they are poor.

honestly, i think the gers will humpp kaunas home and away, sadly. the next qualifying round may be a banana skin. from celtic's point of view, will be good if yous get a good UEFA run again. not as good as last year though, obviously

Rangers go into the Kaunas tie without Ferguson and Cuellar, two players who would otherwise be first on the team sheet.

They have been spectacularly unimpressive in their friendlies and struggle to score even against the poorest of teams.

Previously I had thought that Rangers would edge it past Kaunas, but am far less convinced of that now.

If I was laying money on it, I'd probably still back rearrangers , but it would come as no surprise were they to go out.
