GEORGIOS Samaras insists he "closed the doors" on all other clubs to fulfil his wish to sign a permanent deal with Celtic.
The Greece international has signed a three-year contract with the Scottish champions having scored six times in 21 appearances during a four-month loan spell from Manchester City last season. Samaras, 23, who made one substitute appearance for Greec
e in the European Championships this summer, is believed to have cost Celtic around £1million.

However, the former Heerenveen striker was swift to stress his desire to remain in Glasgow.

"It was my first choice to stay here," he said. "I didn't want to stay at Manchester City and the door was closed to other clubs. I never spoke officially or unofficially to any other clubs, my priority was Celtic and I was focused on them. I had a beautiful four months last season. I enjoyed the football and the attitude and mentality of the club is exactly how I think about football – always attacking. And of course, the gaffer (Gordon Strachan], my team-mates and supporters are also positives.

"Celtic is one of the biggest clubs in Europe, winning trophies and playing in the Champions League and that's also why I'm here."

Samaras was rarely handed a starting jersey during his loan spell at Celtic, with manager Gordon Strachan preferring a forward line of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Scott McDonald, who scored 51 goals between them as the Hoops captured their third Clydesdale Bank Premier League title in succession.

The Greece striker, though, is determined to break that partnership up this season. "Jan and Scott scored a lot of goals last season but I will try to push them hard," he said. "I will push for them and me to give more and try and make the attack more competitive. It's up to the gaffer who starts next season, he will see who is better, fitter in training and working harder. But I'm here because Celtic want me, they respect me and they trust me."

Last season, Celtic also qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League for the second year in a row, and Samaras believes the Hoops fans will be happy with similar success in the forthcoming campaign.

"If we do the same, everyone will be happy again," he said. "The supporters will want to see us make it four in a row but it won't be easy. Rangers have the same mentality as us, they want to win everything."

A 'no lose' signing if ever there was one.
23 years old Greek Internationalist, who cost Man. City a price of £6m., is certainly worth taking a chance on for a fee variously reported at £1m. to £2m.
His 6 goals for Celtic show that he can handle the Scottish game & went a long way to deciding the title.
I am not sure he will be a regular starter initially, but has shown he can make a big impact coming on to change the pattern of a game, as he did several times already.
Hard to see any down-side to this one.

#2 - JVOH and McDonald were indeed Gordon's first choice strikers last season, but you know as well as I do that can change very quickly. Celtic play with two strikers. It would be a foolish manager indeed who only had two top-class strikers on the books.

You should know better.

Samaras I liked when he first went to Man City, young striker with decent movement who could score goals.
I think the pressure of the goals drying up the big fee paid for him and at the time playing in a fairly poor side effected his confidence. I think the lad will be a good signing.

Lafferty is one for the future, I think we all know that, and as I said in the past if both WS and WGS fancied signing the lad, they know more about the game than the punters on these threads.

Sami is a strange one.You rightly cite the price tag/expectations/poor team environment as reasons for his dip in form.I genuinely believe this guy could be the real deal..fast,mobile,good feet and at 6'4' a handful for most defenders, and my wife fancies him too...Means we get to watch the game if he's playing..RESULT!

But if he was still playing he would be one of the first names down on my team sheet if I were his boss.

False assertion.

The Gers went 2 season with out silverware finishing behind the tic in the league by double figures each year.

Playing a defensive system, that was boring for the fans, WS got us to 3 finals winning 2 and losing the league by 3 points. He got results when compared to the 2 previous seasons.

We are far from the finished article football wise, but WS has stabilised what was a floundering team with no identity into a team that will compete.

WS I am sure will bring in more players to Ibrox and I expect him to have at least one top notch signing for midfield.

#41..not sure I can comment on the tactical ability of both in the same sentence as both had different tasks/agendas last season...WGS to retain the title and get to the last 16 in the CL,WS to steady a floundering ship and get some self belief back into a demoralised squad.
Both were fairly successful, but I know who I'd rather watch play football. As for the quality of players bought, dare I say that Celtic could afford to "Gamble" a wee bit more in the market.Wattie knew that Honest Journeymen who would run through brick walls was what he needed and bought accordingly (and, incidentally fitted his plan for a style of play that was more about NOT losing games than winning them)

When he Gers were ahead in the league by 5 or 7 points (I may be wrong on the points total) and had a couple of games in hand on Celtic, you're clubs supporters who used the radio phone in shows were screaming for WGS's head.

And the first time I heard the expression "not Celtic minded" was on one of those radio shows.

It might be difficult to admit that some supporters, not all, wanted him out, but it did happen.

I think one of the best managers who was involved in Scottish football (exclude SAF) was Jim McLean at United, where WS assisted him.

He developed a great youth system, bought wisely, and brought through some terrific pros.

They should have won more during his tenure, and were unlucky not to go through to the European Cup final losing 3-2 to Roma in the semis. Then they Lost the UEFA Cup final 2-1.

Yes he bought Flo after Mols got injured.

It was really a shame about Mols, I had gotten seats in the directors box for the group match against Bayern, and Rangers should have hammered them that night and Mols turned the central defenders inside out.

To this day I have yet to see a striker with his back to goal, being marked tightly feign a turn one way then go the other with lightening speed.

That was Mols. over 5 yards in tight quarters I have yet to see anyone better. It was such a shame with his injury he was never the same when he came back.

The equaliser came near the final whistle.

Our naivety in European football really showed on that free kick, instead of getting Gers player in front of the ball to allow the wall to set up everyone backed off, the wall was slack, keeper out of position, the ball deflected of one of the defenders in the loose wall and went in.

Watch the Euro teams when setting a defensive wall up to defend a free kick, they have one of their players nearly on top of the ball, slowly backing off when everyone has their assignments for defending done.

Dont know if Samaras will be a 20+ season man but anything is better than VoH. He is quick, good in the air and most of all he is hungry to prove he can handle it at the top level, that much was evident from his Celtic performances last season.

What i will say is if my team had just bought
Kenny ( i like you but your shi*e) Miller i would probably be a tad reluctant to slag off the forwards of other clubs.

Poor Kenny is useless and he is in for a very difficult period at Ibrox were sinister indivudals such as Mr Edgar will be almost wishing him to fail.

A promising player by all means. My only gripe is that all the players we are being linked with are defenders when midfield should be the priority.
Still, ages left of the transfer window and recent interviews suggest Walter knows fine well we need at least 2 midfielders.
I reckon he will sign one and try to get someone on loan to cover Barry's injury.

Don't generally contribute to conversations re others' teams, I'll make an exception on this occasion. The guy is not much of a player. Occasional decent game v weak attacking sides, against pace, he is a disaster. I'll attach a few comments from our website and from Steve Claridge. This is what you will be buying. He'll maybe help you against lowly SPL sides, but against Celtic, Dundee Utd and the likes, and in the Uefa or CL, forget it. Good luck with him. The comments below are only highlighting errorsof course, and as I say, he is sometimes decent, but he is one of these players who always seems to be giving the fans heart-attack moments with his bad positioning and rash challenges.

Incedentally he was booked in 1 in 3 of our games last season, always because he was caught for pace or positionally.

Stick with Shittu, believe me, he is better than Glenn.

There were one or two things that showed he was still learning the art of defending and at times he was too far apart from his central defensive partner, Glenn Loovens. I hesitate to blame him for this, though, as Loovens had a very poor game positionally. He was all over the place and Johnson had to cover for him by making two great recovery tackles. (Steve Claridge)

"Kanu should have fired Pompey ahead in the 22nd minute, though, putting both Glenn Loovens and Enckelman on their backsides with a shimmy of his hips, only to roll a shot against the post when it seemed impossible to miss"

"Cardiff defender Glenn Loovens allowed Neal's pass to reach Gallagher"

I could post dozens of these examples from archived match reports, but you'll get the picture.

According to you Samaras is "show pony that failed at the higher level in the Premiership".

Where as Kenny Miller failed at both the Premiership and SPL levels and cost significantly more.

From a Celtic point of view we are really happy as to who got the better deal.

I see you didnt answer the question.

Do you see h--u--n as sectarian?

The reason im asking is that i was out in 'mixed' company earlier this week and the tims and bears had a conversation re the merits of labelling h--u--n and WATP sectarian.

What was interesting in amongst this well balanced and reasonable bunch of individuals was that all the tims saw WATP as sectarian and equally all the bears saw
h--u--n as unacceptable.

People and their perceptions eh?

The standard of yer average bears contribution on this forum in recent months has sunk considerably.

Too many angry and bitter about the new status quo and how the lanscape of Scottish football has been for recent years dominated by the mighty Celtic.

Maybe if my team were the 'establishment' club and had all the benefits that went with that i also would be frustrated at how we could be living in the shadows of a club that should really know their place.

I know a bit about Boyd. My sister is married to a Rangers supporter and lives in Bearsden. He has taken me to a few games (well 3 in total), so I have seen Boyd play although he didn't start 2 of the games I seen but came off he bench, and I agree he is far from the finished article, but if you think he'll get us a lot of goals despite his shortcomings, I can live with that. The problem with Glenn is that he is liable to cost you a few goals. Odd situation really, that s few of the supporters that sit near me were in constant arguments about him. Some slating him, but others always rushing to defend him, so he did have some support. (In fact in 1 supporters association poll he was runner up for player of the year, which was a bit bizarre to some of us).

I liked Cuellor the Rangers defender and maybe he can bring Glenn on a bit in the sense of his positional play. He has a terrible habit of being caught ball watching or getting dragged out of position. There were gaping holes in our defence in a lot of games last season.

All said and done though he's only young, and may come on for having some European experience assuming he can get in the team.

WGS is on record as stating that if you can't get a player to do something after consistently telling them, then punt them. Kenny Misser WAS punted by the hoops. Check out his quotes at the time. He didny want to leave. Poor diddums.

We got 2.5m for someone who was told wasn't good enough and would have been a squad player. Fair piece of business. ReaRangers buy him and throw him right into their first team.

On the other hand, Celtic sign big Sammi who will score more goals that Kenny for less.

Re Robbie Fowler, everything went wrong for him here. He had a lot of injury problems and didn't get many starts. I think he played just 9 times for us. Got 3 or 4 goals in those games, but as I say, bit unfair to judge him on that season.

Very surprised he looks like signing for Blackburn, given his injury plagued season, but maybe he'll be on a pay as you play deal or something.

Glad he's gone because we can use the wages elsewhere. Kris Boyd??

"Now Walter's stuck with aboot 10 strikers none of whom could lace Big Sami's boots, and Big Sami is , at the moment, Champions Celtic's no. 2 striker."

is a ridiculous thing to say.

Funny how you lot decry the media at every turn yet as soon a something negative about Rangers is printed it becomes gospel.

A championship player with relatively little interest from the premiership has no place demanding that his wages are doubled from 10 to 20 grand a week.

So proud to be a Celt and so proud that more often than i dare to say that on these forums its nearly always yhe boys from Govan who take us down to the gutter.

No chance of decent fibta chat with these numpties as they are so full of hate.

"he is nothing to shout about"

IMHO this will apply to many CFC/RFC signings in the next few years but the real issues will be the price and can they do a job for us in the SPL and maybe offer something for the CL.

The modest finances that are dictated by Scottish football mean we will find it harder and harder to get those type of exciting players that would enable fans to 'shout' about them.

Who is universally derided as the biggest tw*t on here? - a clue - he ain't one of us (Idee, Pax & cohorts).

Typical dhim statement - full of misplaced moral paiety - like your Scotland shame banner after you're broadcast on TV papping coins at the Rangers physio tending to an injured player - only surprise is that wasn't a giro book.

As for Samaras - distinctly ordinary as he couldn't even displace Vinegar who none of the GFITW seem to like. The Bangkok chick boy has only been bought to appeal to a hitherto ignored demographic - middle aged sex tourists.

McNaughton has been the pick of the bunch simply because he has covered so many positions for us this season (well, last season). Has a rush of blood if he ever gets a scoring opportunity, but then so do a lot of defensive players.

Gav Rae is steady Eddie. Nothing flash but a "busy" player who does well for us. An ever present, (unlike Robbie!) so money well spent.

Big Stevie is a tough one to call. He missed the early part of the season so didn't play a lot. When he did come back he was not his usual self. The "hustling bustling" style had been tempered down, so he spent a fair amount of time on the bench and didn't contribute much in goals. Only 16 goals in nerly 3 seasons now so I think he needs to offer more this season or it will be his last in my opinion.

Well I'll make my excuses and return to my familiar hunting ground now. The boards are to discuss football and have a bit of crack are they not? Too much non football nonsense being spoken here which to an outsider such as myself is very strange indeed.Obviously I am not "in tune" with the Scottish football fan. Good luck to Rangers this season, hope you can win the title back and good luck to Celtic in the Champions League.

To messrs nineinro and nervous bear, you should be truly ashamed with yourselves, but no doubt don't even recognise you have issues to address. If in trying to respond to banter and leg pulling you find you need to resort to such a base level of language, and inappropriate subject matter, then it is clearly not about football for you lads and you have deep rooted prejudices that you surely need to leave behind for the good of Scotland and humanity?

Farewell. See you in the CL group sections in 3 years time when the Bluebirds soar into unknown territory and astonish the football world as the CL final result echoes around Europe-----Barcelona 1 Cardiff City 6.

How go's it mate?

Im starting to get a tad frustrated that the players we keep getting linked with are central defenders when everyone and his dug knows its midfielders we are crying out for.
We are saying we cant afford an extra 500,000 for Davis but are being linked with 2m bids for central defenders.
Plenty of time yet and Walter is on record acknowledging the sparcity on midfield but if it were me midfield would be the priority. Whats your take on it?

I am a little puzzled by WS chasing central defenders with Cuellar, Weir, Papac, Dailly and Webster who they signed to an extension on the books. And all can play in the middle at the back.

Samaras for the money could prove to be a decent signing and he is only 23.

As far as him setting a "moral precedent" in signing for lower wages at Celtic, I would think in today's mercenary world of footballers it may have come down to lack of interest or money offered by other clubs, rather than the moral issue.

There is plenty of time for signings my little cyber munchkin. It may have escaped your attention but the spl champions (thats the famous Glasgow celtic)go straight into the champions league group stages.
So there for no need to hit the panic button on the signing front.
I personally thought Big sammy was okay not brilliant, but at the knock down price we got him for i would say it was a good deal.
Maybe if i supported a lesser team that had to qualify for entry into the group stages, lets say rangers for talking sakes, then i would ofcourse be panic buying just like walter is doing now.Get ready for your Lou macari years.

Ranger have not.

Rangers have actually never been in a European Champion Clubs' Cup final.

Celtic have been in two.

Rangers will never win this title.

The lead they have in league titles is steadily being eroded during the first part of this centuary.

How many times do we have to educate you.....

It's not a new competition.....it is still called...the Champions of Europe cup....

Just ask UEFA....go to their web site....click on Champions League....then click on history....there it lists all previous winners of said Champions of Europe cup....and there you will find Celtic 1967....you will also find in the same list Man Utd 2008....

Now we understand your pathalogical need to try and remove this Celtic achievement from historical fact.....but sadly UEFA say otherwise......

Now.....what is it....you find difficult.....or should we just accept...you're thick and leave you alone?

"we don't wear flat caps and get lifted over the turn styles anymore"

That's fine league titles won prior to the creation of the SPL no longer count.....

All previous competitions have now been expunged from current statistics....

They were won under different formats...at at time when people still wore flat caps and got lifted over the turn styles.....

Sobber up ya clown!

It will vary throughout the season.....but he will stick with his....as long as we score more than them approach...

I do believe Gordon has a tendancy to stay loyal with the tried and tested....until something brings upon a change....injury....suspension....out of form..etc.

I think Hartley and Robson gave him the results he needed towards the end of last season and he will possibly stick with them.....although Scottie Brown..might be given the nod before Robson....

McGeady and Naka will start...no reason why they shouldn't....

Makes a change we are not playing Killie first game of the season.....the fact we are not travelling to the states or Japan....but closer to home....I think we will come out the traps a lot bette rthis season....so God help St. Mirren!

Winning the EC was a major achievement and I am sure made for lot of tic supporters smiling faces.

I felt the same way in 72 when the Gers won the ECWC. for Scottish sides to reach and win European finals was terrific. The Dons included.

Today we laud teams reaching the last 16 of the CL or being runners up in the UEFA Cup final, which both clubs have done within the last 5 years.

Interestng to note that in todays newspapers Alex Ferguson puts his Aberdeen team ahead of RFC 72 team as the second best club team in Scotland after the mighty Celtic team of 67 who Ferguson says had no equivalent in terms of class..

Bosco.....when I worked in Aberdeen about 24 years ago...I once had the mis-fortune to sit next Alex Ferguson in the Stakis Casino...playing Black Jack...

I know it might have been a bad night and I know there might have been all sorts of reasons.....but he was one miserable barsteward....

One guy at the table asked him....politely...hows things Alex.....his retort was typical Fergie....

I came here to pway sum cards...and have dinner wiff ma wife...I didn't come here to talk to you!....end of conversation!

Now I know the guy could have been anyone.....an ok would have done...but not fergie....not once did he smile....he just looked really fehucked off!

Dennis Rommel was the scorer for Lotterie.

Other stand-outs for the Germans are Poggenborg, Bowing-Schmalenbrock and Bugri, not for any skills you understand, but what great names!

Rangers start the 2nd half unchanged. Meanwhile Lotto, who dont seem to be taking the game too seriously, have made five substitution, very possibly due to injuries.

From official Rearrangers updates:

"62 min: Novo and Cousin break and the Gabonese chooses to cut back to McCulloch but the midfielder's effort ricochet's off an offside Kris Boyd."

Unlucky there lads.....

Thanks for the updates they are reminiscent of the tics past pre season losses to MLS opposition or even cup defeats by ICT or Clyde.

Again thanks for the information.

Goal sensation!

2 goals in a minute from Kris Krissy Boydie Boyd.

Rearrangers will be even keener to get shot of the one potent striker they have.

A third for Rearrangers from John Johnny Jocky Jakey Fleckie Fleck, the youngest Rearrangers player ever to score against German Div 4[West] opposition.

BEMUSED EXILE,

Samaras has the credentials to be a decent signing, but my understanding is that there is barely a Manchester City fan out there who mourns his loss.

My suspicion is that if he starts the season as first choice target man alongside McDonald, he could go from strength to strength. But if WGS chooses to select VoH ahead of him, then all may not stay rosy in the garden for long. But only time will tell.

Encouraging news that Cardiff may be prepared to accept Daniel Cousin as a straight exchange for their accomplished Dutch defender Glenn Loovens, a deal that would solve two problems at once. Now, if we can just seal the deal for Steven Davis, we'll be pretty much where we need to be in terms of squad strength, and ready to face the new season with some confidence.

Good workout in Germany tonight, by the way. Regardless of the quality of the opposition, it's crystal clear that Boyd definitely knows the road to goal, and it was also great to see young Fleck enjoy a full 90 minutes, and grab a fine goal at the death. The lad is a very exciting prospect.

Yes I know.

I also know you Gers like stuff like this which is why I'm sure you'll be chuffed that he is now also the youngest Rangers player ever to score against German Div 4[West] opposition.

Those records keep tumbling.
