ST MIRREN 0

RANGERS 3
Boyd (4), Darcheville (24, 69)
RANGERS last night ensured they remain firmly in the race for the SPL title going into the final act of this dramatic season but were unable to tip the odds back in their favour.

While their first away victory in the championship since the end of February pulled them level on points with Celtic at the top of the table, it is the reigning champions who retain the initiative with a goal difference now superior by four to that of their great rivals.

It means if Celtic defeat Dundee United at Tannadice on Thursday night, the only way Rangers can prevent them winning a third successive title is by defeating Aberdeen at Pittodrie by four more goals.

It is the unlikeliest of scenarios for Walter Smith's team who surely now need Gordon Strachan's men to slip up on Tayside if the prize they have cherished most this season is not to elude them.

Rangers, playing their 66th match of the campaign last night, had enough chances in an ultimately one-sided match to make the goal-difference issue more intriguing, but were frustrated by their own poor finishing and some dogged defending by a St Mirren side who have ended the season in tenth place in the table.

Against opponents who had kept six clean sheets in their previous eight matches, including four consecutively in their more recent outings, Smith had clearly been wise to counsel against the notion Rangers would be able to roll up at Love Street with their primary focus on achieving victory by a glut of goals.

While simply securing three points was his priority, however, he was nonetheless aware of the need to maximise his team's attacking options. He did so by switching to a 4-3-3 formation with the scarcely used Kris Boyd deployed as the spearhead between Nacho Novo and Jean-Claude Darcheville.

It was an adventurous approach born more of necessity than invention and although Rangers did not have things all their own way in the opening exchanges, it reaped an encouraging dividend for the Ibrox side.

Their fourth-minute opener re-ignited belief among their supporters that the initiative might just be reclaimed in the title race. St Mirren could only clear a Steven Davis corner as far as Kevin Thomson who returned it quickly to the Northern Ireland international. Davis floated a pass wide to Kirk Broadfoot, who had found space on the right side of the box. The former captain of St Mirren, who had been jeered by the home supporters, cut the ball back in behind a central defence who had been slow to react. Novo, the initial target of the pass, failed to connect but the ball ran on into the path of Boyd, who was never likely to miss the opportunity to slot in his 23rd goal of the season from close range.

There was no appreciable surge of immediate momentum in Rangers' play following the goal and St Mirren defender Will Haining might have done better than direct a free header straight at Neil Alexander after being picked out by Franco Miranda's free-kick.

A more difficult headed chance fell to Boyd at the other end and, while Darcheville did well to find his team-mate with a sharp cross from the right, the pace on the ball contributed to Boyd only succeeding in guiding his effort wide of Mark Howard's right-hand post.

Rangers were again fortunate not to concede an equaliser when Stephen McGinn somehow managed to outjump Broadfoot and nod the ball narrowly over the crossbar with Alexander beaten.

There was fresh encouragement for the visitors, however, when they took a firmer grip on the match with a second goal in the 24th minute. While it was finished stylishly by Darcheville, it owed much to some wretched defending by St Mirren.

Stephen O'Donnell dithered on the ball after receiving a pass from Haining just outside the home penalty area. He was dispossessed by Davis who fed it on to Darcheville. The French striker steadied himself before driving an excellent right-foot shot low beyond Howard's left hand into the corner of the net.

Anyone doubting St Mirren's competitive edge in the match would have been persuaded otherwise by the touchline fracas which saw four players booked as a result of one incident by referee Craig Thomson. An off-the-ball clash involving Thomson and Murray sparked a melee which, when order was restored, saw the two instigators cautioned along with Billy Mehmet and Steven Whittaker.

Rangers came agonisingly close to a third goal two minutes before half-time, Darcheville striking Howard's right-hand post with an overhead kick after Boyd had knocked down a Davis cross, but Smith could only be satisfied with the outcome of their endeavours in the opening 45 minutes.

Rangers' attempts to make further inroads on Celtic's superior goal difference were far from cultured, but they managed to create chances nonetheless against a St Mirren side who appeared increasingly as if they were longing for the end of the season.

Novo managed to beat Howard with a curling shot from 16 yards after energetic work from Broadfoot on the right, but Haining was well placed to make a fairly comfortable clearance over his own crossbar.

Darcheville then created a far more straightforward opportunity for Novo which the little Spaniard sliced wastefully wide of Howard's left-hand post.

It was hardly sustained pressure from Rangers, with much of the play scrappy and contained to the middle third of the pitch, but there remained a sense that they could increase their tally.

Darcheville's low shot from the edge of the penalty area was turned behind by Howard, who then comfortably held David Weir's header from a Thomson free-kick, before Rangers were finally rewarded with a third goal in the 69th minute.

Boyd did well to hold the ball up for Barry Ferguson who split the St Mirren defence with a beautifully executed diagonal through ball which picked out Darcheville.

The striker showed great composure to slot a low shot beyond the exposed Howard from around 14 yards.

Good result for the Gers. Whether it's enough, we'll soon know.

Strange that Rangers who have been accused by certain people of being negative, anti-football, etc are now the top scorers in the SPL!

This was the poorest team I have seen in the SPL, Gretna included. I could barely believe I was watching a team of SPL quality . The football was an embarassment to watch. Even more so for the supporters.

I expected this team to give rangers a fright, but they could hardly string two passes together. Mehmet looked the only St Mirren player trying to win this game. I hope he gets his move. He deserves it.

A half decent Rangers team would have easily wiped out the seven goal advantage enjoyed by Celtic. The Celtic fans could probably not believe their luck that the advantage enjoyed by their team was only reduced by 3 goals.

Anyway, all to play for on Thursday on what will be an exciting evening as far as the outcome of the SPL title.

The momentum is with the team in Green but anything can happen in 90 mins of football. Nobody knows this more than Walter, given the good fortune enjoyed by his team in Europe.

Raskolnikov,

So it comes down to the last games yet again.

I am quietly confident Celtic will triumph purely down to the fact that they have come back from the dead with 6 wins on the trot, and won't throw it away now. Effectively, a win at Tannadice will crown us champions for an amazing 3-in-a-row.

When Celtic lost at home to Motherwell in March, Rangers went to Tannadice the following day, 9 points in front with 3 games in hand. Rangers drew at Tannadice to go 10 points clear with 2 games in hand.

Based on those facts, if I hear another Gers fan pretending that they don't care if they lose the league, or that it doesn't really matter - like some were claiming yesterday, then they are bare-faced liars. It will be an unmitigated disaster for Rangers, especially after the debacle that was Manchester.

I won't get much sleep between now and 4:45 Friday morning - kick-off time in Australia. Setanta Australia have decided to broadcast the game from Tannadice, which suits me fine, as it suggests even they believe the title is Celtic's to lose.

Can't wait.

My towel is in the pool, I am ashamed of myself for letting self belief blur my vision. Celtic have it all to play for and only a disaster on Thursday will change things, or SLP/SFA cheating will happen.

Helicopter Thursday here we come....

Thrid time in recent years that the league has come down to the last game. Last 2 times Rangers have emerged triumphant.

Will it be 3 in a row?

Will Celtic hold their nerve at Tannadice?

Will Rangers' long-running Pittodrie hoodoo come back to haunt them?

What a great end to a fantastic season!

THE DAY SIR DAVID MURRAY PUT MONEY BEFORE THE LEAGUE TITLE.

In the four weeks before Sir David Murray convinced Alan Hutton to join Tottenham Hotspur, Rangers won three league games away from home. In the 14 weeks since they have won only two. This is why Celtic are now odds on to win three-in-a-row.

In the final days of the transfer window while Celtic were strengthening by signing Barry Robson and Giorgios Samaras, both of whom have scored crucial goals in the league race, Murray was working tirelessly to convince a player to reluctantly leave the club.

More than his defensive qualities, Rangers have missed the attacking options Hutton gave them; think back to the goal he created for Nacho Novo against Celtic in October. Since his departure they have become dependent on set-piece plays to score. Can you imagine what this transfer did to dressing-room morale?

Murray is keen to have the SPL answer some questions at the end of the season, but I wonder if he will answer the two fascinating questions his fans (sic) are asking:

Why did you sell your best player midway through the season?

Will that money for Hutton buy you enough PR to prevent the bitter truth that you literally sold the league, from being aired?

Managing a football club is all about judgement; all clubs take risks and none get them all right, but if Celtic ever so blatantly undermined the manager and team I would demand a resignation.

Sir David, 'Walter' and the players will take the heat for blowing that lead, but we know where the credit is due; thank you.

The bet was the Gers winning a double, 2 cups are a double my friend. (still have to wait until Saturday)

Who knows what can happen in this funny game, the tic could lose to United, the Gers draw with the dons, and a possible treble could still be on. LOL!!!
23

Daillyman,

20/05/2008 02:35:22
21

In the transfer window we added Davis and Dailly who have both contributed immensely to RFC winning the League Cup, reaching the UEFA Cup final, behind the tic on goal average in the league, in the Scottish Cup final.

We have closed the gap in the league this year as the tic walked it winning by 12 points last season.

And remember a draw by the tic and a win by the Gers gives them a great shot at the treble.

Hutton was a loss we all now that, but 9-10mil for a home grown player is to much to turn down, see what happens when an offer comes in Boruc for the same amount.

And as far as Robson, he should have been starting right after his transfer, he was one of Scotlands best midfield players at United, but it took him sitting on the touchline for 2 months and the tic injuries for WGS to look like a good manager by starting him.
24

Finnharp,

20/05/2008 02:35:44
ah Daillyman, that was funny. Don't see it happening that way, look at post #21 it totally makes sense. SDM gave up in January when ra tic were trying to win games, given up goals like their is no tomorrow.

But Hutton goes down south, Celtic gather some momentum and RFC cannot win away from home (until its to late). Title goes to the HOOPS 3 - In - A - Row.
25

Raskolnikov,

20/05/2008 02:39:59
#21 - Can you imagine the abuse the Scottish media would have dished out to Peter Lawwell and Gordon Strachan if they had forced the likes of Aiden McGeady out of Celtic PArk in January, against his wishes?

But no, because it is Rangers and the unimpeachable David Murray, it's all about "a great piece of business".

That this has come back to haunt the Gers will not be lost on Murray or the Gers fans or indeed the media, but will they admit it? Not on your Nelly.
26

Daillyman,

20/05/2008 02:43:46
Finnharp

Each team has a match left, the tic have a better goal difference, but to ensure the title goes to Celtic Park you must win.

So you think DM gave up in Jan., I love the tic logic, just a week ago the Gers were in the running for a quad, the bid failed, but the potential for a treble is still on until the final whistle on Thursday.
27

Daillyman,

20/05/2008 02:46:26
25

You will never know how the tic board would have reacted because not one club in Europe came to Celtic Park with a bid of 10 mil. for McGeady.

And by the way I don't think Hutton is to unhappy cashing a weekly cheque of 33 grand a week.

A single goal victory by Celtic on Thursday requires Rangers to win by five goals at Pittodrie to take the title.

Both Aberdeen and Dundee United have avoided defeat at home for over three months. Celtic won 1-5 at Pittodrie on 10 February, since when Aberdeen have played eight home games, seven in the league and Bayern Munich in the Uefa Cup, without defeat.

Dundee United lost at home to St Mirren in the Scottish Cup on 13 February and have since played five home games, all in the league without defeat.

Thursday is going to be an enormously difficult challenge for Celtic and Rangers. United have only lost one home league game since losing to Celtic on 26 December 2007; Aberdeen have lost only two league games since losing to Motherwell on 15 September 2007.

Celtic are worthy favourites for the title, but it will take concentration, patience and most of all, courage if they are to emerge champions on Thursday night.

Sectarianism remains a putrid, socially unacceptable, trait in most corners of British society, but a Sunday Times journalist today wrote that for "good sectarian reasons (I don't like Celtic) I was cheering on Rangers at first" during Rangers Uefa Cup final defeat.

Since its inception Celtic has been a non-sectarian club, open to all and supported by all. It has been supported by a large number of Roman Catholics throughout its history and today counts a huge number of fans right across the Scottish community and beyond.

Blatant sectarianism is a disgusting prejudice to be flaunted by a national newspaper. This bigotry has nothing to do with Celtic and the Sunday Times have no business dragging our club into it.

Some collapse, behind the tic on goal average, winners of the League Cup, will win the Scottish Cup, and the league to be decided on Thursday, yes some collapse.

Being so far behind the tic the last 2 seasons in the league with the tic winning most of the silverware, I for one will be happy if we have to settle for a domestic cup double, and Eufa Cup runners up. But then again the league is still not over, stranger things have happened in the past as you well know.

I hear it took minutes for the Scottish media to discover that Uefa are powerless to act if football fans misbehave or riot away from the stadium.

The entire Barcelona charade against Celtic fans in March was nothing short of a Rangers-supporting media sham; a blatant attempt to bring Celtic down to the level they exist at. Some Scottish journalists are on a personal crusade against Celtic and carry agendas again Gordon Strachan and Peter Lawwell.

Only Graham Speirs has had the guts to call it how it is: a total disgrace and a poison at the heart of Scottish society perpetuated by the people in power at Ibrox who simply will not admit to the problem and weed it out.

They would need to do a considerable amount of social climbing to be termed Caesar's whoores.

Whichever team emerges from Thursday night victorious, the other can have no complaints. It's been a ding dong battle all season long, with Rangers now going through the wee dip in form that Celtic experienced in March.

Overall I have to say Rangers are in this position purely because of the Xmas signings by Smith. Had we not picked up Davis, Dailly and Alexander, the SPL would have been long since at Parkhead and the UEFA Cup dream dead before the semis. I'll be hacked off if Rangers lose out, but it's been a hell of a ride and I've really enjoyed this season for the first time in a long time.

Great run by Celtic. Rangers have simply played too many games for a limited squad.

Hutton was a massive loss, and was very possibly the best player in the SPL.

Rangers can have no excuses though and it would have been very easy for Celtic to have packed it in weeks ago. Wee Gordie has to get alot credit for keeping the lads going. Especially with the run Rangers were on in Europe. Like politics. What a difference a week makes.

It will be tough for both the OF this week. Personally I would like to see both Aberdeen and Dundee Utd win.

Rasky,

The wee 3-0 (as I predicted), was a good effort from a team that have had so much on their minds in the past few days.

Which board is that?

This is a true story. I personally know Jack (John) McGinn. Never meet a nicer guy, and bigger football fan.

Just a pity he supports Celtic.

No doubt this thread will be shut down by thescotsman again. I never get to read the posts anymore. By 7am EST its shut down. Anyway for what its worth it was fun reading these posts apart from all the bigoted crap posted. Wondering too where the likes of Boke etc have disappeared to since there team got found out. Still its all up in the air. Celtic are capable of snatching defeat from... but hope they pull it off. At the same time the problems are still there and if we have to suffer WGS for another season then hopefully the presence that is Neil Lennon will help out. It seems that his arrival has certainly helped. If Rangers win then well done. You have played some of the worst football ever seen but but you're still hanging in there. True justice however is a celtic title and QoS winning on penalties. At least when we were getting horsed in the 90s you could admire Laudrup and co but this shower deserve nothing and even truer justice would be the CIS cup being taken off them for their fans performance in Manchester.

2-0 celtic on thursday

2-0 might not be enough for Celtic.

If it's not, and we DO get the result required it will all be wrapped up by then.

BTO - If Rangers beat the Dandies 7 - 0, I'll be doing a happy dance, even if Celtic beat the Arabs by 3. I watched too many games at Pittodrie where we suffered at the hands of the Dons. I was there on the famous day that Davie Cooper was felled by a Pittodrie Pie. Ironic that you can't get into games with darts, knoves or bottles when they sell lethal weapons inside the ground....

Davie Cooper.....

Some say John Collins was a better free-kicker than Davie, but for me Davie will always be the man with the wee bender.

72 - Ha ha! Was lucky enough to be back in Aberdeen a couple of weeks ago - just in time to see the team of '83 back together for the 25th anniversary of the Cup win. Some of the boys have worn well (Eric Black), but some have aged badly (naming no names, but Stuart Kennedy - Jaysus!).
Bandy Jim was there, complete with his beer bottle specs. How he ever became an international 'keeper is beyond the realms of logic

Met Uncle Jim when he came to Japan in 1995 for the Kirin Cup. I think he got his 98th cap then. Nice guy.

Best save by Jim? Against Greece, at Hampden, in the European Championship.

Just wanted to mention that one as Ally McCoist came on in the 64th minute and scored the winning goal with a wee back head flick, with his first touch of the ball (at the Rangers end) that sent the punters wild.

You always try to spoil my stories.... Yes, it was in front of the Celtic end.

What a goal, what a player.

For me, that tells you the importance of the 64th minute tactical substitution

I was at that game with two young nephews. Behind us was a Mediterranean looking guy with tanned complexion, black hair and black bushy beard, obviously Greek. He was on his own and asked myself and my nephews who certain Scottish players were. When Super Ally scored, we were all going crazy, including the Greek. I turned to him and said, "Why are YOU cheering?"

"Me Turkish," he replied. "Me Turkish."

To all you OF supporters out there, how would you like a really competitive league, I doubt any of you could handle it, brought up in an environment of relative riches, buying up all the talent nurtured by the wee Scottish teams so that you can week in week out beat us.
the Rangers team last night had a former important Buddies player, another who could have been and briefly was, other players featured also came from other Scottish teams.
Celtic are no better and in fact worse, buying up talent and letting it go to waste on the bench. If you truly want competition stop decrying the wee teams trying to survive on limited budgets and let them keep the talent they develop. We might then have a better league than we currently have, better all round football anjd a genuine competition.

C,mon the Saints you had a good season.

Good on you, sir.

My best memory of St Mirren?

#86 - So who is Scotland's top scorer this season? Scott McDonald, who moved from Motherwell to Celtic and has hardly missed a game. Robson is also a first-team regular, as is Wilson, barring injury, Hartley, Brown etc so you haven't a clue what you are talking about.

Anyway, are you really saying you would want to stop Scottish players progressing their careers by moving from lower teams like Hibs, Hearts, St Mirren etc to Celtic and Rangers?

Apart from anything else, it's the only way those teams survive - through transfer fees. Get over it.
90

Raskolnikov,

20/05/2008 06:53:15
#88 - You mean like James Traynor claiming to be an Airdrie fan? That would be why for 20 years he travelled to watch Rangers every week with the local Airdrie Rangers supporters club then would it?

For me, we need more regulation over transfer fees.

It's stupid money that Celtic have been paying for some of these "players".

That money could better be used to build drawbridges in Tibet, or sparklers to give out to the needy children.

The year they contemplated changing their name to Paisley St Mirren when they represented Scotland in the UEFA Cup. Might as well changed their name to St Mirren Nil for all the impact they had.

I am not counting my chickens,Champions Celtic have a very difficult game against the team who were robbed in the CIS final and robbed of the chance of a European slot when trying to play Rearrangers on some sort of level playing field two weeks ago in their league game.....

.....BUT.....

Walter The Assaulter is every bit as guilty as Sir Wantaway in getting rid of Alan Hutton.

Remember those weeks when Hutton refused to be bullied out the Ibrox door...Walter "TA" was on TV giving interviews every other night with his face tripping him that Hutton was still on the Ibrox payroll.

Dont forget that Alan Hutton was so keen to stay with his boyhood heroes he even refused to speak to Spurs let alone go down south and discuss contractual terms.

Murray and Smith, and Smith dont forget, colluded behind Huttons back leaving the lad with no option.

At that point Murray and Smith were saying to the Ibrox hordez," look here supporters,Rearrangers winning trophies is NOT our priority this season.
If we can get near to Champions Celtic rather than them disappearing in the distance as they have over the last couple of seasons, then that will be good enough for you lot.You will have seen that we have progressed".
In other words Sir Wantaway gets the DOSH...Rearrangers fanz get the platitudes.....oh aye,and the wet hankiez....oh aye,and more promises for next season or should that be a moonbeam or two.

Now then, theres nothing wrong with a moonbeam or two now.
Is there.

Talkin of moonbeams..

I wonder how PSG have got on since PLG took over ?

Oh dear, would you look at that...

Monsieur Paul Le Guens PSG have just won the French League Cup,bagging a place in the next seasons UEFA cup in the very act.
Oh and wait a minute PLG has just ensured that PSG remain in Ligue 1 with a fighting win over Sochaux last Saturday night !!

Oh and wait another wee minute, whats that...and they compete in the Final of The Coupe de France against Lyon next weekend.

No bad for a Rangers considered duffer,eh.

If only...if only Monsieur Le Guen would have been allowed to keep Basket Ball in his place and manage his team in the way HE chose.....if only...

Thats Sir Wantaway for you .

I come from that part of the world. I know James Traynor personally. He was a diehard Rangers fan all through his youth and early twenties. Why is such a thing so stunningly unbelieveable? Or are you betraying a Freudian slip by reacting as if saying someone was/is a Rangers fan is some sort of shameful and scurrulos accusation?

St Mirren are a very poor side.

However, whatever the outcome on Thursday, the situation is that Rangers have gone to the very last match of every competition they entered with a chance of winning it. That's some achievement for Walter Smith and his team.
