Published Date: 23 May 2008
CELTIC'S third successive Scottish Premier League championship, secured by a 1-0 victory over Dundee United at Tannadice last night, would have a deeper emotional impact than either of the previous two under the managership of Gordon Strachan.
Just two days after the funeral of Tommy Burns, Strachan and his players would be released from the strain of a painful week by the goal from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink which brought the title-clinching three points.

With their closest rivals, Rangers, faltering once again with a 2-0 defeat by Aberdeen at Pittodrie, the widely anticipated goal difference was not required to separate two teams who have been engaged in a neck-and-neck race for the line over the past two months.

The ecstatic Celtic supporters chanted Burns's name before, during and after the 38th and final match of a nine-month campaign, clearly aware that the late player, manager and coach had scored the winning goal that brought the championship at the same venue 27 years ago.

For Strachan, however, it would be a personal triumph over those 'fans' who had called for his sacking as recently as seven weeks ago, on the day the team lost 1-0 to Motherwell at Celtic Park, sliding six points behind Rangers, who had two matches in hand.

The manager had also endured some criticism in the media, although he has always claimed to have been unaffected, on the grounds that he does not read papers or tune into sports programmes.

Nonetheless, his future at Celtic has been the subject of speculation for two of the three seasons he has been in the job since he succeeded the widely revered Martin O'Neill in the summer of 2005.

In the immediate aftermath of last night's momentous events, he remained characteristically reluctant to dwell on the personal significance of an achievement – three successive championships – that had last been recorded under the legendary Jock Stein more than 40 years ago.

Instead, he preferred to deliver a brief resume of "an incredible season" and leave the media with a barely disguised put-down, the inference from which was that, despite his claim not to be a reader, he was aware of some of the criticism directed towards him.

"It's been an incredible night," said Strachan, "and it has been an incredible season. I want to thank our players for their character, their belief and their ability. It has been the most incredible season of my career.

"We've achieved what we set out to achieve, and now it's only right that I should go and be with people who have believed in us and supported us throughout the season." That pay-off line was a clear suggestion that, at that moment, he felt he was not in the presence of the people he had described.

It was the first indication Strachan had given in public that all the speculation over his future, the sometimes relentless questioning of his managerial abilities, had affected him. It seemed unarguable that this latest championship, and especially the manner in which it was won, presented him with an unmissable opportunity to declare his dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the campaign.

Strachan was still on the field with his players, waiting to receive the trophy that had been delivered by a helicopter that had hovered in the Dundee area, when his counterpart last night, Craig Levein, gave his own admiring appraisal of the Celtic manager.

"When you look at the league table at the end of the season, it doesn't lie," said the Dundee United manager. "Celtic deserve to win the title because they have had the resilience throughout the season.

"I'm especially pleased for Gordon. He has taken a lot of stick at various time throughout the season, but he kept faith in his players and in himself."

A tremendous performance from Celtic and a fitting end to a great season. It was very nervy at 0-0 until the Celtic fans started cheering the first Aberdeen goal. I knew then it was just a matter of time before Celtic got the goal their play deserved.

How typical of BTO to throw the dummy out of the pram, and then to say "this is my final word on the matter" coming as it does from a man who litters every Scotsman thread with his inane drivel 24 hours a day.

BTO, I doubt that was your last word.

To the likes of Fayneant NZ and other decent and honest Gers fans - hard luck and it has been a great season in the SPL.

To the likes of The Boke, Dabulamanzi, Mabawza and others - GIRUY.

And in MY case, that really is my last word on the matter.

See you all next season.

PS. Come on the Doonhamers.

Although this might be sound like sour grapes I cannot congratulate Celtic on seemingly winning the SPL.

Listening to the games tonight I could clearly make out the Celtic fans chanting sectarian songs which should I believe mean that points are deducted from their team's total.

Not that I have any faith that Gordon Smith will do anything but ignore this outrage. I shall be writing to him personaly to complain. Points should be taken off for this travesty.

Walter and Ally have achieved great things this season.

They should recieve not a word of criticism.

David Murray, though, cannot hold his head high. Forcing out Alan Hutton was one of the most despicable acts to ever to disgrace the history of Rangers Football Club.

The money you gained from this sale (£9,000,000) has possibly just been lost because of this utter folly as RFC miss out on an automatic Champions League Group place. Does anybody imagine Rangers tonight being beaten tonight with Alan in our team?

This past week or so has been one of the worst in my life. Rangers losing the UEFA Cup and then the League while Chelsea lost out in the Champions League have been devastating to me.

I have a ticket for Saturday but I now feel like giving it away. David Murray you should hang your head in shame. Hopefully you realise your mistake but you are now an absolute shadow of the man who signed the brilliance of Gazza and others to our club. If you sold up tomorrow I couldn't claim that I would be sorry.

To all those who made accusation concerning the two Jimmie's Aberdeen side lying down to Rangers, hopefully now you realise the utter stupidity of your slurs.

To Celtic fans: hopefully you will be gracious enough to apologise for your harrassment of your manager. Your treatment of him has yet again reflected badly on the already far from wonderful reputation of your club, who suffered multiple embarrassments this year from the antics of Artur Boruc to the final indignity of the fan who

Just watched Rangers game on the tv and there was plenty defiant chanting when the game was a bogey at 2-0!! Still at least Nacho Novo kissed the badge when he was walking off in disgrace, how you must be proud of him!!

Hutton wouldn't have made a difference tonight, he would have been off before nacho, as he should have been in the last game at Pittodrie.

No need to congratulate Celtic on winning the league, we won't exactly lose any sleep over it. Time for another drink!!

For Tommy!!

As I have stated in another post, you may have been 'awarded' the league but in reality your club has little to celebrate.

I would though like to give limited praise the Celtic fans who apparently pointed out to stewards their colleague who threw the object onto the Tannadice pitch.

Tremendous fight back by Celtic and at the end of the day Rangers did not deserve to win the league especially if they cannot get a result against Aberdeen on the last game of the season. Just an opinion,

On the outside looking in, tremendous guts showed by Celtic when they slumped behind a couple of months back.
Hate to say I told you so, but I criticised the Celtic fans who called for Strachan's blood back then.
As for Rangers, if truth were told, at the pace of to-day's game, they were always in danger of running out of steam.
I think any reasonable neutral would agree to that and whether Strachan said he had no sympathy because it happened to him at Aberdeen is not the point.
It was wrong then, it is wrong now, and it will be wrong if Celtic are on the wrong end of the incompetent Scottish Premier League next year.
The one thing that is constant in life is change - the SPL need to absorb that fact.
As for the Hutton factor - it happened, get on with it Rangers fans, it matters not a whit now, it is purely conjecture.
But what a finale to the league.

THreepeat, threepeat, threepeat! How sweet it is after being barraged for weeks by Scotland's shame(SS)insisting they were about to do an unprecedented quadruple ( didn't the Bhoys do the Quintuple in 67 - and I believe the reserves won everything that year too). Now the Bhoys can have a relaxing summer, rest up, enjoy our automatic spot in the CL groups while SS get ready to play their qualifying rounds before the end of July. That gives our European neighbours time to get their emergency preparedness plans in place before that "tiny minority" of fans who aren't even associated with the club, descend like locusts with a bad attitude to wreak havoc for another season. CL group qualification will be a bridge too far for SS, so enjoy the UEFA group but I doubt you'll qualify from it - hope you get AC MIlan. And by the way, Zenit were decent , no more than that. Do you really think they'll win the CL next year as Porto did.

Fayneant,

Congratulations to WGS and Celtic. They dug in when it looked beyond them and deserve to be Champions.

I hope once the dust settles all football fans will see what a fantastic season this has been for Scottish football - near qualification for the Euros by the national side from a group including France Italy and Ukraine, 2 Scottish teams in the CL, 3 Scottish teams in Europe beyond Xmas, a Scottish team in a European Final and a league that went right down to the wire.

Let's hope this is only the start and we'll do even better next season - hopefully with Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell, Aberdeen and Dundee Utd making a consistent and concerted effort to take the League title off of the Old Firm....

Got to hand it to GS. I was a big doubter back at the transfer window and again at the Rangers 1-0 defeat that he wasn't up to it but he did it. ANd he did it with 3 of those signings on the park. I do think there is a little sprinkling of Lennon dust in the air so that bodes well for next season.
Rangers... well too bad. They gave a good challenge and hats off to the UEFA run. But boy you are a boring team to watch. Commiserations to all decent bears and to those on here who were wallowing in the quadruple and posting of league victory last month...get it up ye.

#16 who complained about sectarian songs:

This is as good a place as any to say this. I'm a Glasgow-born Catholic (now living in the US). Because of memories of my Protestant father and grandfather taking me to Rangers games as well as a boy, I boot for Rangers in Europe; there's patriotic and UEFA coefficient reasons as well, so I also boot for the Dons this year and any other Scottish team. I took off work last week, and not for the first time this season, to see Rangers play in the UEFA Cup final at a Washington sports pub.

But right at kickoff, a bunch of Rangers fans began singing the Billy Boys song and if they hadn't stopped before getting to the third line, I would left the place and made sure the management knew why.

At a Rangers-Celtic game or in Glasgow, I can at least half-understand certain pressure-cooker behavior. But this was a European game (against an Eastern Orthodox team, no less) and it was being watched in North America. Since I wasn't wearing Celtic gear or anything else visible to mark myself as Catholic, as far as anybody knew, there weren't even any Catholics in the joint.

And. Still. That. Sh*te. Song. Happens.

Congratutlations Celtic. If they are to be Scotland's principle representative in the champions' league next year can he please train his team passing and keeping possession? There was no excuse for the display against Barca. No Spanish team would have surrendered possession the way Celtic did. And there is no excuse about eh Scottish league cause this was abject and would be parralleled by any second division English or Spanish team...

Can't wait till next year when I can cheer on Scotland again;) In the age of mercenaries - that's all that really matters...

Shame on SPL, failing to orchestrate a scenario in which Rangers could win. It seems 12 points with 7 weeks to go -- with games in hand, no less -- wasnae enough for Rangers to overcome the SPL's treachery. Then again, mebbe the better team won on merit. Probably so!

The SFA convened an extraordinary meeting after last night's games and determined that as it was the last game of the season 3 points should be awarded for a loss and no points for a win.

C H A M P I O N E E E S !!!

After losing 1V0 to Motherwell at CP , I thought that the title was lost and all I wanted was to see the back of Strachan.

I am not in the least ashamed to admit that at that point I wanted Strachan to go.

But my misjudgement of what GS is capable of couldn't have been more off the mark. That he has managed to turn this season around and pull it out of the fire is the measure of his greatness both as a manager and as a human being.

Strachan has , so far as I am concerned, a job for life at Celtic. He has, beyond any question, proved himself a great manager. He has achieved something which no Celtic manager has since Jock Stein, whilst simultaneously taking Celtic into the lasy 16 of the Champions League in consecutive seasons, both of which eluded Martin O'Neil who had far more money placed at his disposal.

And on top of that, last year Celtic posted a record profit of over £16m, whereas under O'Neil Celtic invariably made a loss because of the crippling wage bill.

So, as far as I am concerned, the debate about which of Strachan or O'Neil has been the more successful manager is now over, and whilst I will for ever cherish the memories of the MON era, I am in no doubt at all that we now live in even greater times.

Three in a row has only been managed twice before in Celtic's history, spanning three centuries. It is a very rare event and after Strachan's reign is over, we might very well be waiting another 40 years before it happens again.

So this is a very special time for Celtic. We are the champions. We are in the Chamions League. Life is beautiful.

#64 BTO, as for your sentiments on the bigger picture this week, don't you think that Sir David and Bain should have been there? I think their presence would have sent out a long lasting message to alot of people on both side's. Opportunity missed I think!

three in a row and counting. Great to see the leaugue staying where it belongs.
Still there is a wee "got out of jail" feeling to it.
Well done Rangers amazing taking it to the last game.
Big improvement on the point side but surly you'll have to get the 5-4-1 or is it 9-1 sorted out. You were an accident waiting to happen. It just took a wee bit longer than everyone expected.

As for Novo getting sent off. It couldn't happen to a nicer person. Looks like he'll miss the final. Hope it doesn't influence the Spanish coach. That Spanish team was built round the man. Euro 2008 wouldn't be the same without him.

66 Championees don't see why you think SDM should have been there; didn't see Gordan Brown either do you think he should have been there? Had to take my hat of to Smith and Ally. fair dues to them.

What's this I'm hearing? What is wrong with my ear's? there is this continuous noise in my ear's and it just won't go away and it keeps getting louder.
Oh wait a minute it's it's just the fat Lady singing and how sweet she sing's.
Gentelmen sI now must go to bed. To all of the decent gers I did thank you on an earlier thread, BE, Colin P and Dailyman, well done and I can assure you all this is the last of the windups.
Good night.

Congratulations to Celtic on winning the league and congratulations to Rangers on winning the CIS Cup and possibly the Scottish Cup. But they know that, since the Souness "revolution", both have wasted hundreds of millions of pounds simply to compete with each other. The true test of success ie a European trophy remains a pipedream.

Well done Celtic I honestly thought you lot were dead in the water six weeks ago but you didn't give up and with that you have my congratulations from a Gers daft fan in Toronto. This not sour grapes but the amount of games Rangers had to play in such a short span caught up to them, still they'll only get better,Walter Smith is no dummey and he'll fix a few things in the off season. Go easy on the Irun Bru. I think if at the start of the season Gers were grabbing two trophies and a finalists medal in Europe we would have been over the moon(no disrespect to Queen of the South) so to all the Gers fans out there don't hang your heads to low we've come a long way, roll on August.

What a finish, that is three last day title deciders in the last 5 years, slightly more exciting than the premiership! Most of the time that is...
We can all speculate as to how Celtic made a come back like that, personally, I would say that Rangers were too tired to go the distance in four tournaments, although they did come within 4 games of a quadruple, which in itself was quite impressive!
I look forward to next season, the new signings all over Scotland, the beginning of Scotland's campaign to make it to South Africa 2010 and the Champions League, which I am hoping brings us another 3 out of 4 English teams in the semi finals. I just love it that the UEFA hierachy are sick of the sight of English teams destroying their favourite Spanish and Italian giants!
Germany for the EURO

Oh well.

We will have a go again next year, but what a finish to the league. Let's hope it is as close again next year, obviously with the other team lifting the trophy.

Congratulations to Celtic, i hope it is not 4 in a row, I don't think i could take it.

Congratulations to celtic.
Congratulations also to Rangers for a mighty season beyond all expectations and beyond the achievements of even the saintly MON.

The only source of irritation for me is that a diddy, biscuit-tin team like celtic should find themselves in the CL group stages while a team of the grace, dignity, class and stature of Glasgow Rangers has to run through the formality of the qualifiers.

Rangers 'lost' the championship because they lost twice to Celtic, and the fixture pile-up caused mainly by their postponement of the Gretna game and two cup replays

Celtic desrved to win it!
They won all the games they needed to win and Rangers didnt!
It is true that Rangers played almost half a season more football than Celtic did this season, but that is the nature of the game, you want to be involved in as many games as possible.

It is now 52-42 and time to look forward to 2008/09
76

May I recommend painting. Wallpapering is a bit 70s - and of course, with the ever-neutral Fifer around, you always have the extra pleasure of watching the paint dry over a wee can of super lager.

Well done Celtic but the Dons did their bit to stop the horrible half of the OF so perhaps less of the sheep stuff in the future would be a good thing and let's stop singing any songs with a political agenda then Rangers can have no excuses or come backs when they are taken to task for singing their vile songs. I still find it impossible to believe that the club has escaped all punishment for the behaviour of their neanderthal fans in Manchester.

Congrats to the decent Celtc posters on here.

No doubt the huge amount of games had an impact but you wont hear me making excuses. We lost the league due to a loss of form and Celtc hittin form at the right time. For that Celtc deserve thier win.

Any Ranger's fan will know we lacked that extra bit of quality all season and the fact we have done so well is testamount to our fighting spirit and Walter's organisitional skills. 3 or 4 quality players in the summer please.

We will come back stronger next year as the next step of the rebuilding process kicks in.

Thanks to the Rangers for what has a great season and once again well done Celtc. (God i hate sayin that!)

BTO you must feel gutted. All yer spouting for months to no avail. Last week you never even knew what time Rangers played you were in such a state.

Well your luck ran out.

Cheats never prosper.

BTO you must be gutted but spare a thought for Mike McCurry - despite his corruption and cheating - Celtic still triumphed.

Hail Gordon Strachan.

Encephalon,

Make mine a double! 23/05/2008 08:22:40
I would really like to be magnanimous and offer my congratulations to Celtic.

I would like to- but cannot-because this league championship victory- more than so than any I can remember -is tainted. Enen the most blinkered celtic supporter must realise that Celtic only won because of the assistance they received from the SPL who did everything in their power to ensure that Rangers could not win and that Celtic would not go trophyless. That plus the circumstances surrounding the postponement of the January Old Firm match leave a very bitter taste that will be long remembered.

However Rangers can and will take great heart from our performances and if there is any justice we will still win a double and have next season to look forward to.

Also they can hardly sack the litle ginger whinger now that he has done three in a row-comparable to Jock Stein myanus-I just pray that Chesney does not decide to bow out on a high!

Keep the faith -the future is bright.

Smeato...

Standing in a crowd of 20 guys and polikce, he kicks a guy lying on the ground on fire fighting for his life. He then goes on TV and boasts about it. Rangers then invite him to training to boost the squad morale.

Later it's revealed that Smeato was hardly heroic and in fact some even say he wasn'tr even there at all!

Like his beloved RFC, Smeato is hollow.

Strachan must stay.

The wee guy is a footballing genius. He's also a man of enormous spirit, character and tenacity.

He is now a Celtic legend.

I said form day one that Gordon the Golden One will lead Celtic to greatness. Nezt year I predict we will get to at least the CL Quarters.

In the close season we will strengthen significantly.

The future is bright in the green and white.

Hail Gordon the genius, he must stay.
