Team talk encourages Paatelainen

Published Date: 08 August 2008
THERE have been times in the recent past when a meeting of Hibernian players has spelled trouble for the manager, but the one presided over by Rob Jones last week produced only pleasure in Mixu Paatelainen.
The club captain convened the meeting after Hibs' defeat by Clyde, one of a series of disappointing pre-season results. Jones had been watching that match from the stand, and decided that the players needed to get together for an honest appraisal o
f what they had been doing wrong.

For Paatelainen, who is about to start his first full season in charge at Easter Road, it was an indication that his squad had the right attitude and were willing to work hard to put matters right. "I was delighted with that," the Finn said yesterday. "It was before training that big Rob came to me and said is it OK if he started training with a chat among the players.

"After the Clyde game, I wasn't too happy at all. He was in the stand at Clyde, so he saw the match. Sometimes when a player sees his team play he realises the weaknesses and the areas in which they need to do better.

"So Rob played a captain's role and took the boys aside and said let's roll our sleeves up and start working. The players realise every individual can and must work harder. That was the outcome from that meeting."

Besides that pre-season discussion, the players also went paintballing as a team-bonding exercise this week. They possibly needed some light relief after taking some flak from their fans over their run of losses, though Paatelainen is convinced the best way of shaking off that negativity is to get the new SPL season off to a victorious start when he takes his team to Kilmarnock tomorrow.

"I can't wait," he said. "It's been a long summer. The league starts on Saturday and hopefully we start winning.

"I can understand the supporters' concerns. Whenever they see their team get beaten, they are not happy. They expect to see their team win all the time, (but] unfortunately that does not happen.

"I expected us to win more pre-season games than we did, but it didn't happen. We've now analysed the games and hopefully learned one or two things from that.

"Of course, you must perform well to win, and in pre-season we haven't performed well at all. But in the last couple of matches the signs have been there that it is coming back together and hopefully we can carry on from there.

"I remember after some of my pre-season games I was embarrassed. I remember that from some of my league games as well – I said that before you did.

"The purpose of playing pre-season is to do well in the league. If we win the game (at Kilmarnock], pre-season has been great."

Winning at Rugby Park would certainly give Hibs a lift after a run which, besides their domestic defeats, has seen losses in the Intertoto Cup and to Barcelona, Middlesbrough and Wigan. They have only scored two goals in those games – both in the 3-2 defeat by Middlesbrough last weekend. Again, though, Paatelainen does not appear overly concerned by this defect, believing his players have the ability to rectify it.

"We should have scored on Tuesday," he said, referring to the 1-0 defeat by Wigan. "But I'm not worried. It will come."

The Finn has also had to be patient in the transfer market. In common with most SPL clubs, Hibs have not seen a great deal of movement in or out, and Paatelainen remains hopeful business will be done both ways before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

As of yesterday afternoon neither the trialist striker Steven Pinau nor the former Gretna player Fabian Yantorno had signed for Hibs, but both are expected to agree deals soon.

Meanwhile, another striker, Clayton Donaldson, could be on his way out of Easter Road, but Paatelainen restricted himself to saying that Crewe Alexandra had "shown an interest" in the player and would not say how close to agreement the two clubs were.

Who's it gonna be? ,

08/08/2008 02:01:09
Eh, You are not allowed to comment on the rear-angers stories because your fellow knuckle dragger fans cannot be trusted to keep their bile to themselves.
Simple as that.
If Scotland's Shame and Celtanda fans cannot grow up and get over a sad history of meaningless battles and decades of useless hatred then the rest of Scotland and perhaps even Europe may start to accept you as fans of a football team and not a religious and political idea that is completely irrelevant in todays society in Ireland let alone Scotland.
It really is pathetic now and holds Glasgow back from becoming a city that embraces change and pride with a respect for the past, instead it is stuck with a bitter taste of hate thy neighbor because he wears a different colour jersey from me. If 10% of all old firm match goers went to church on a Sunday it would shock everyone and yet they try to maintain that their beliefs are correct.
Friendly rivalry and banter is one thing but to take it to the limits that said fans do suggests a serious lack of intellect and backward thinking from the Glaswegian populace.
Apparently it is the minority who cause all the problems but when 50000 people are singing the same song it suggests that the problems will not go away soon.
So get used to not being allowed to post on your chosen team's 'news'.

The Daily Record, reports of a calamitous scene at Edmiston Dr earlier tonight as poor, unsuspecting Rangers players, too fat to move, were bludgeoned into oblivion as the new regime tried, desperately, to stem the slide from the upper echelons of the SPL by releasing them from their contracts.

In what has been billed as, the "Night of the Long Knives", scores of underachieving Rangers soccer players were mercilessly put to the sword in a last ditch attempt to save the career of Mr Walter "Wattie" Smith and his jolly sidekick "Alisdair".

From the blood drenched streets of Govan, faint cries of the unfortunate hoofers could be heard as far away as Kinning Park. One onlooker said that "It wiz awful, jist AWFUL! Ah saw a wee fat yin get dragged oot the door screaming...ah don't know his name but he looked like the Chef frae "south park...."

A Greenpeace spokesman tonight said that they are monitoring the situation and if any abuses of "professional" footballers are found,it would be contacting Mr Donald Findlay to mount a vociferous challenge to the Ibrox club...Sir David Muray was not available for comment........

Celtic, confidence rising as they havnae played any big teams for a while. Weekend game making them feel edgy.

Injuries taken away the goal scorers, no pace in mid-field, Rangers fans eager to rub salt.

The WS book of tactics is a collectors item. If Mixu's got a copy, he should sell it a buy a few players (first edition?)

In my view, Hibs should get a new strip. That one is just out of date. A few Eastern Bloc care centres are using them for pajamas.

As said very accurately by #1, all this stuff seems to be recycled but i found the last 2 paragraphs interesting. I have no problem with mixu bringing players in, we need some quality signing for sure, but do we need more midfielders? We already have morais, obrien, kerr, zemmama, thicot, keenan, murray, stevenson, shiels, rankin and chisholm who can all operate in midfield. Thats 11 i count, most of whom seem average a best, plus now 2 more.

Should we not be looking to move some players on ASAP in order to free up some space on the wage bill, maybe the 8 or 9 mixu himself suggested recently? Also, rather than sign more midfielders, i think most fans would see a quality goalkeeper and defenders, espec left back being the more important areas to strengthen

The Hoops’ preparations were thrown into disarray before a ball was even kicked when the football authorities informed Celtic that three foreign players, whom the club were led to believe would be allowed to play, were banned from taking to the field.

Yet it was the gers who scored 1st in the unlucky for some 13th minute, the the young Hoops put on the style undermanned as they were by scoring 3 in the 1st half!

Now how long do you give this thread after Indee's had his coffee?

Celtic can have their big day, and I hope it is a good one. Tommy will be asking, where are all the new signings.

TB was the picker of new Celtic talent for years (and the Scottish team, BTW). Now he has passed away, what will WGS do.

OK, says WGS, nae worries, says WGS, just sling oot the same losers again.

Hello Caledoniaco and BTO - mibbees the hibbees could help you out on the painting front as a few reports have them sighted at a paintballing incident shortly after Jones the Footballers "giddy up" chat the other day - call me old fashioned but, for mine, you simply can't beat a good bit of paintballing as your final preparation for a good shallacking - hats off to Rob Jones and very best of luck Hibs at Doursville tomorrow.

Hibs,, a great team.. as we all know...

New tactics this year, I heard.

Seven at the back, and a big hopeful punt.

Why change course now.. it works every year, said Mixu.

Laughter was heard from the press box.

Radge Roberto,

it does conjure up a certain image BTO - 7 at the back - at one end behind them wee McNeil the goalie jumping up to see what's going on and at the other end waiting for the punt, meep meep, dashing around not quite sure what to do when he gets the ball - it could make for the most enetertaining fitba all year !

As the famous Bill Shankly once said "if your not sure what to with the ball son - stick it in the back of the net and we'll discuss your options later!"

Neutral Observer,

Quite pathetic really! You make a post, go to sleep and when you next look a virus has destroyed most of the brain cells in the rest of the world. Anyone seen the recent Will Smith film on the same subject? Seems that its mostly the mutants who are posting now!
79

Lenny,

Is there not an 'ignore ugly sisters' option? Surely there is a place these people can go to discuss the the merits of rioting and fighting over a centurys old war that none of them actually know about.

The sheer ignorance and lack of knowledge re Pat Stanton shows how little they know about football.

Ronaldo Stuffed Everyone,

#79 Couldn't agree more. I saw Pat Stanton many times playing against us. Without him we would have thumped Hibs many times. Like many players at Hearts and Hibs he was easily Scotland class, but was rarely picked because he didn't play for the bigot brothers.
81

The Falcon,

Above and watching 08/08/2008 10:06:48
For the record, Pat Stanton played 16 times for Scotland and was captain on 3 occasions.

Class act and should have had more caps but the Weegie Mafia were already at work

True true bud. Have had the pleasure of meeting him a few times too, a total gent. 16 caps he got, which wasn't actually so bad in those days. I think that it may even be more caps than Davie Cooper got.

Funny enough the above story also mentions....

Clyde
Wigan
Middlesborough
Crewe Alexandra
Barcalona
Kilmarnock
Gretna and the SPL

If you want a Hibs fans only forum.....then you're at the wrong place.....

This is a football forum for all fans of all clubs....

It's not a difficult theme to follow or understand.....

Of course you could always provide humour or light hearted contributions.....

Sorry forgot.....you prefer to post comments about how much you hate others.....the very same behaviour you suggest others are guilty of?

Now lighten up ya spanner!

Any ideas on how many adverse results it might take before the Hibs manager Mixed-up put-a-line-on is facing the sack?

Without trying to turn this thread into religious debate, you have to take account of Hearts and Hibs fans' views of the Glasgow teams re bigotry, religious hatred and religious divide.

Yes - you are not all tarred with the same brush, I have many colleagues who support Celtic orRangers and mostly are friendly and free of bigotry.

However the longstanding view of all Scottish fans is that Celtic and Rangers are divided by religion and a large following of each club are full of hatred for each other because of their respective religions, and that Glasgow is a dangerous place to be during Old Firm games
93

Rambo_the_Jambo,

Religion tends not to be an issue in Edinburgh between Hearts and Hibs

Surely the very mention that The Very Reverend The Mike McCurrpt is being allowed to pick up his referees whistle this season is enough to shock ALL fair minded football supporters right across the length and breadth of Scotland.

McCurrupt is not only willing to hand Rearrangerz points in their league quest,as was clearly caught on LIVE TV, but in that same action is willing to unjustifiably TAKE points from any other team who happen to be Rearrangerz opponents in the process.

There were many instances when McCurrupt made blatantly biased decisions entirely and singularly in favour of and to the benefit of Rearrangerz.

Gordon Smiths SFA are running to the tune of Rearrangerz F.C.
The SFA are in cahoots with Rearrangerz F.C.

It is a blatantly biased disgrace.

Scottish Football deserves better than this.
Doesn`t it.

#91 GTF This story is about Hibs not the Rioters or the Smeltic. The rest of Scotland is fed up with the bigoted antics of both the OF. No other club in the SPl comes even close to the mind numbing bigotry assocaited with them.

No one believes that Rearrangerz can win the league this year.

Not if the league is to be won fair and square at any rate !

Step forward The Very Reverend The Mike McCurrupts of this, our Scottish game!

Its a completely new ball game now.

As usual, all th pies will be eaten before kick-off.

Boyd, however, is on a 7-up diet plan.

How the Celtic few will hate those long hours that pass with Rangers top of the league, 4-0 goal difference.

I can see it now. The flag is rolled out. The cold wind brushes by. WGS looks lost....

What can I do to beat off this team that is about to rise, he mumbles to himself....

The rest is, as they say, going to be history...

Basket-Balls Semi was the worst corrupt and blatantly biased game in favour of Rearrangerz that I witnessed last season.

Hearts were the team punished by McCurrupt that day,in what is now commonly refered to as Basket-Balls-Semi.

Basket-Ball was inside the D with his back to Hearts goal when he received the ball.
Basket-Ball controlled the awkward ball with the top of his left arm in such a way that he rolled the ball down onto his left hand.
Very quickly he bounced the ball using his keft hand and on the half volley turned and hit the ball into the back of the net.
The Very Reverend stood facing the incident as he would his congregation, without any obstruction between him and Basket-Balls handy work,he blew his whistle and signalled....GOOD GOAL !!!

Hearts were The Very Reverends The Mike McCurrupts victim that day.
They were not to be the first victim and as we infamously came to learn,Hearts would not be his last.

Scottish Football deserves better than blatantly biased, inept and corrupt refereeing decisions.

Doesn`t it.
