Published Date: 07 May 2008
VALDAS IVANAUSKAS spent months at Hearts trying to cajole Mauricio Pinilla into showcasing his tantalising South American flair. News of the Chilean's new contract concerns his former head coach, who is urging the player to change his mindset or risk wasting his inimitable talent.
As revealed in yesterday's Evening News, Pinilla has signed a new three-year deal tying him to Tynecastle until 2011. The agreement perplexed some fans, who have watched the striker appear in maroon just eight times in two years due to a combination
of illness and injury. Most of those outings, including two goals, came in autumn 2006 during Ivanauskas' tenure.

The Lithuanian would later bemoan Pinilla's depression and general attitude but, at the time, Hearts appeared to have uncovered the proverbial gem; a player who looked truly capable of shouldering the mantle of a cult hero like Rudi Skacel or Drew Busby. A physical presence, two good feet, an impressive turn of pace and a ferocious shot had Scotland's footballing community in awe. But then, ability has never been Pinilla's hindrance.

Depression followed injury and, early in 2007, he returned to Santiago complaining he wasn't mentally attuned to Scottish football. Ivanauskas believes he still isn't.

Earlier this season, the 24-year-old was dispatched to Spain by Vladimir Romanov and Pedro Lopez for £35,000 worth of psychiatric treatment paid for by the majority shareholder. He has managed only two substitute appearances since but finds himself rewarded with a three-year contract.

Ivanauskas has implored him to maximise the opportunity given to him by Hearts and show the club the true depth of his dedication.

"Pinilla is capable of playing in Scotland and being successful but he must want it. I think he needs to show more commitment to Hearts," said Ivanauskas, speaking from his home in Lithuania. "He is a good player, he has real quality. I would not say he is one of the best I have coached but he is very talented.

"It's very difficult to speak about his ability because his mentality is not okay. He must change his life.

"In my time at Hearts he was injured a lot. He played six games and scored two goals and looked a real football player. He can play much better but, mentally, he is not ready for Scottish football. I could see he was an excellent player but his mind was not 100 per cent. If he is staying he must think about the future.

"He is still young and the situation is not easy for him being so far from home. If he wants to continue playing and prove himself as a good player, he must change mentally."

Frequent socialising was one vice Ivanauskas strove to steer Pinilla away from in Edinburgh, yet his best efforts were in vain. He was left seething in January 2007 when the striker flew home to South America, saying at the time: "I am very disappointed with Pinilla, with how he was when he was here, with how he worked and with his attitude. It makes me very angry.

"He is not mentally ready to be here just now and he has gone back to Chile. We are waiting to hear from him."

With Romanov's permission, Pinilla negotiated a loan deal with Universidiad de Chile but managed only a handful of games before being kicked out of the Santiago club following a nightclub incident.

Concurrently, he also incurred the wrath of the Chilean public after a hotel-room liaison with Maria Jose Lopez, the model wife of national team captain Luis Jimenez. Ivanauskas explained the difficulty in managing a player who is occasionally brilliant but often wayward.

"Pinilla arrived at Hearts as an international player with a big reputation. He isn't an easy footballer to coach and every manager must look after him.

"Every manager has his own qualities and you must use everything with Pinilla.

"You must speak with him, include him in the team and understand the Chilean and South American mentality.

"He played some excellent games in the beginning and showed true class.

"He was great for supporters because he isn't a normal player, he can produce something different and unexpected. I can understand how the fans feel now.

"They know he is a good player but he hasn't shown what was expected."

Romanov can usually point to method in his inherent madness. Having negotiated Pinilla's new contract personally, he clearly believes having a 21-cap Chilean internationalist at Tynecastle will bear fruit. Even with the expected side issues.

Part of the Russian businessman's summer schedule will involve travelling Europe, and perhaps beyond, in search of striking reinforcements for next season.

Provided he is managed properly, Ivanauskas argues that Pinilla remains capable of filling voids left by Andrius Velicka, Roman Bednar and Michal Pospisil.

"There is always a chance for Pinilla to be a regular in the team. If he is ready and focused he can be very important for Hearts and the supporters," said Ivanauskas.

"If he changes his mind and his way of life, he can even get back in his national team if that is what he wants.

"This would be good for Hearts because they would then have a top striker playing at his best."

Pinilla is now exclusively Hearts' property.

For a player previously owned 50 per cent by Inter Milan, the time for half measures is well and truly over.

cannot understand why this guy has been given a contract unless its to punt him on right away. he is at the top of a long list of players i would get rid of. i thought we were meant to be cost cutting. nothing makes any sense!

#1 Just depresses me and is the reason why I have yet to renew.

Wish somebody would pin Vlad up against a wall and tell him in no uncertain terms to concentrate on business and leave football to football people.

I blame Championship Manager. Can we sue SI Games??

I think all of romanovs signings have been with one thing in mind and thats making money, not about who is best for hearts. the sooner we are given a manager who has full control of the team the better. i mean how can someone like roman bednar be injured constantly at hearts and go off down south score 18 goals in 26 matches and never have so much as cramp?? fair enough we are making money but why was he never fit at hearts?
7

huggs,

07/05/2008 12:44:10
#6 The same reason Nade will never be fit at Hearts
Frail has not got a clue its a case of the tail wagging the dog
Nade pulls up whenever he likes in training dares the manager to take him off
Elliot tells him to play him or he will leave
All the players reffer to him as Shaggy he lies to the fans and no one has any respect for the man
8

Mells,

I think Frail has been put in a position no-one else will take and to be honest is taking the bullet for Romanovs mistakes. Yes, we know his tactical knowledge is poor and his team selections are lacking but i personally dont blame him! The players are robbing the club blind and it should be they who stand up and show the fans they deserve to wear the maroon jersey!

#7 Rubbish. I have a lot of respect for Frail who has done a decent job in impossible circumstances. When he took over we were seriously threatened by relegation and were thanking Gretna for being hopeless.

His position is untenable as Vlad cannot stop interfering and presenting him with unfit players who know the only boss they need to answer to is 2000 miles away in Kaunas. It will be the same for the next manager whether its McGhee, Davies or even Mourinho.

Personally, I hope Frail quits and leaves us in the sh**, gets a job at a regular club and comes back to haunt us.

Of course, if Frail walked now he would get labelled a Judas!

Sorry Huggs cos I know you're echoing the views of many but for too long too many Jambos have been directing their anger at the wrong people. Only one man deserves the abuse.
10

huggs,

07/05/2008 12:52:40
If the players are robbing the club blind why are they being picked ?
Because Vlad still picks the team even though Frail stated he was in charge of team selection
Sooner Frail leaves happier i will be

Indie Rep Kid,

#7 Can I retract my "rubbish" comment from post #9 because everything you say is actually correct, apart from Frail not having a clue when he clearly has stabilised the team and made us (usually) hard to beat.

The point is, Frail is not the issue here.

It sickens me to think Roman Romanov can walk into Tynie without being surrounded by a dozen bodyguards.

Why? He will be replaced by another puppet, probably of eastern european origin.

IMO Hearts fans need to focus their efforts on influencing one or two men in power.

#11 I agree that Romanov should be getting more stick

Maybe you think i am too strong on Frail but playing 2 young lads up front against St Mirren then not beating Falkirk at home and now being beaten away with a far stronger squad
Still points to him i am afraid

#13 Everyone I talk to knows they are the problem and the only way things will change is if they are confronted directly.

Burley was sacked on October 2005. In two and a half years since we knew the club was rotten yet we have tippy-toed around facing up to it. Every time Vlad has pulled another blinder out the bag (Malofeev, Rix etc) we have accepted it and that has given him the go-ahead to go further. We then get Federation reps standing at the airport waving pieces of paper proclaiming "peace in our time".

It's all lies and we should have struck hard when Burley was sacked.

That's in the past but if we let his 1st Jan statement go by without being fulfilled then we stand guilty of ruining this club.
19

Indie Rep Kid,

#15 So Frail picked that team? Or did Vlad?

Okay, probably Frail but what alternatives did he have up front? Whose idea was it to sell Velicka, Pospisil, Bednar?

By the way, we beat St Mirren and ICT with those players and lost two creative players at Falkirk due to awful tackles in the first half hour.

It WAS an end of season game so I would expect any player to take their foot off the gas a bit (annoys me but it's a fact). However, playing Hearts is still a big event for Falkirk these days, what with them being a bunch of small-town @rses and they were clearly more up for it.
20

#18 I completely agree, I have long said that nobody is asking the right questions of the romanovs. Why has he signed all these duds? Why can't players stay fit? Why when Nade is consussed is he out partying in Shanghai the same night? Why wont he stop running the club as a business?
21

huggs,

07/05/2008 13:12:28
#19 He had the chance to play Makela who had scored 2 goals in the reserves but i beleive Vlad picked that team
End of season game is no excuse the players dont seem to give a sh1t and i put that down to bad management
22

Indie Rep Kid,

07/05/2008 13:12:33
#20 Well, he SHOULD run the club as a business but I get your point.

He wouldn't allow Frail to manage his Bosnia steel plant so why does he think he can run a football team?

Seriously, can we sue Championship Manager?!?!?
23

Indie Rep Kid,

07/05/2008 13:15:29
#21 And Makela showed in half an hour against St Mirren why he has not been getting picked.

End of season is no excuse, agreed, but it's a sad fact of football. Portsmouth are playing for time until the cup final so are you saying Harry Redknapp is a bad manager for not getting better performances out of much more highly paid players than even Nade?
24

Mells,

Edinburgh 07/05/2008 13:17:43
Well i suppose it would be a start!

I understand the money making side of the football business but he is letting this interfere with the playing side. I know we lost to falkirk but over the course of the last 6 weeks there has been a slight improvement due to younger, more hungry players coming in and showing all these so called big guns how its done!

IRK i agree that things are not rosey in our garden right now but if there is no plan in place for what to do if romanov packs it in then there will be no Hearts for us to support. Who would take on the debt and still have money to spend? i dont think there are too many abrahmovich's out there willing to pump that kind of cash into an SPL team outwith the OF.

We need to face up to the fact we are stuck with the romanov's for the current time.

What's Pinilla got to be depressed about ? A football career , 12k a week contract , playboy lifestyle , designer clothes , top of the range cars ,attracting beautiful women and has become a father .
What does it say for the rest of us , where did it all go wrong for the lad ?
I think Romanov has signed him on a lucrative contract to make a bigger fee on him when he is sold before the close of the transfer window

A good article from Mr Banderson in my view, and a reminder to the "romantics" that Pinnila has some real attitude problems.
I'm with "HUGGS" in that Frail is not taking us forward, and won't take us forward.
Our NEW manager will do that.
Our NEW manager will kick Pinnila in the baws after three or four weeks...GUARANTEED. And it will have nothing to do with his pecadillo.
30

Do you think that messer's Smith and Murray will get "investigated" for slagging off the SPL and SFA in the press. If i was in charge i would now say to them "WELL F*@% YOU, WE WONT EXTEND THE SEASON AT ALL NOW AND YOU CAN PLAY THE EXTRA GAME NEXT THURSDAY"

Why should any other teams bend over backwards to help them out, its not like they are going to share out the revenue they get.

wait for the weegie bite's now

i dont remember Smith saying to Murray "oh hold on david i cant manage your shambles as i have a contract for the national team"

#26 Oops, for the record I was not comparing Frail to Harry!! I was comparing two teams playing out the season with nothing to play for.

#25 MTG. If we try to get Vlad to stop interfering in the team and that causes him to fall into a major strop and try to close the club then it would happen eventually anyway. Sorry, but I can't see any reason for p*&&*y-footing around anymore.

#30 That's my point. We can ditch Frail and appoint McGhee. But who buys the players? Will Vlad still sell our top (only) scorer in March? Will McGhee still be able to play a player who is refusing to sign a contract?
33

Maroon tinted glasses,

07/05/2008 14:53:01
IRK, I do agree with what you say BUT i dont think it would work as Vlad seems to be stubborn enough to just sit it out, and since he never really comes to the games anymore a large protest would also be meaningless.

Well said, "Indie". You're quite correct to try and bring some focus to what should be concerning us most.

Too many fans are afraid of upsetting Romanov and imagine a worst-case scenario will inevitably follow.

It just proves that Romanov's climate of fear reaches well beyond his employees. Talk about a bully!

This pervasive fear is reinforced by Romanov's refusal to communicate with the fans. The fans are now riddled with doubts, uncertainties, and insecurities.

We are at odds within ourselves because we don't know what's going on and rely on supposition and guesswork. Opinions are split, we therefore lack unity of purpose, and this suits that b*****d very well.

And Pinilla? Romanov is clearly lining up a future "Rudi" deal (he hopes). Is this not clear evidence that any new manager will NOT be the person who decides whether or not to accept an offer for the player?

Apart from perhaps Steve Frail, who is going to put up with that..?

#37 I read your comment earlier, Biley.

So, you don't think I can accept criticism of Hearts from "outsiders"? I can, believe me.

There are conditions, though. I'll happily read criticism that's constructive and balanced. However, I'm inclined to challenge opinions masquerading as facts and blatant ill-will.

But if you're suggesting that YOU are in the former category, then you're deluding yourself.

In your case, I see little evidence of any such empathy - just scorn and personal abuse.

Someone said the other day that you irritated lots of people. Your joyous reply to this was "it's testemonials (sic) like that that make this all SO, SO worthwhile".

How revealing. Now that's the real you: someone who enjoys provoking, patronising, and trying to hurt.

My questions, Biley, remain the same as ever. Just what do you get out of doing this? Why do you behave in this way?

On another topic - I teach Chris McCart's (coach of Motherwell youth)son:
not only is his dad moving to Celtic at the end of the
season he also says his dad has said that if Celtic
WIN the league Strachan is going to quit and McGhee
will be going for the job BUT in the meantime he said Mark McGhee HAS "received an offer he will consider at the end of the season" from Romanov (well - Ogilvie to be exact)- the offer includes a "Guarantee" of NO interference in team or player selection - question is
will McGhee SERIOUSLY consider the offer or just use it
as a bargaining tool to renew his Motherwell contract or one for a move south?
