SCOTTISH Rugby bosses will today mark an expansion of grass roots coaching by taking their number of development officers to an unprecedented high.
With the addition of an official covering the Midlothian area – one of seven added in the past year – Scottish Rugby will now boast a network of 56 youth coaches covering the length and breadth of the country.

Celebrations are due to be led by Nic
k Rennie, business partnership manager, who is responsible for negotiating the partnerships involving local authorities and sponsors who help pave the way for providing access to players at grass roots.

FERGUS PRINGLE, the only club player in the Scotland A rugby squad which has arrived home from a successful venture to the Barclays Churchill Cup in North America where they reached the final before losing to England Saxons, says he will be happy to spend his immediate future with Boroughmuir.

"I really enjoyed the tour while obviously very, very disappointed to lose in the final as we were really up for it.

"I'll be taking things one game at a time when I return from holiday and will be at Boroughmuir next season."

And the South African-born second row, who previously played for Edinburgh before helping 'Muir lift the Premiership title last season, added: "I see my immediate future here."

How could anyone ever trust these crapulous cringe-inducing SRU sleazeballs? Nauseating numpties, indeed.

Only thing they've achieved is a GRAND SLAM of let-downs and lies! You wouldn't want any of that bunch holding the rope......

Let us put this into perspective. The S1 team that I had an involvement with had 6 qualified coaches who had all played rugby at a level above most DOs experience, each age group from P4 to U-18 had a minimum of 3. We regularly played Stirling County who had at least 4 good coaches per team (and should still be held up as a template for others to follow), Dalziel were similarly blessed and Stew/Mel Lions teams had ex District & International players or better involved in number with each team. 56 DOs to cover the country. But what are their standard, as certainly many in the West are not rated by those coaching youth rugby or having to attend DO run coaching clinics. While journalists constantly harp back to the 70s and the fact that Jim Renwick hadn't been in a winning away team until his ?? cap and that we weren't that good a team, one outstanding thing from those days was the coaching courses structure. This was run at Heriot Watt University over a weekend involving 3 levels (years)of coaching, referees and U21 players from all over Scotland. The tuition was by top experts in their area with International coaches and referees brought in provide extra expertise. Nowadays you attend local course where DOs (in the West) are more interested in the nights out than imparting any new information to a coach that had to attend the same course 3 years before due to SRU License renewal requirements, George Graham excepted of course! Funny how the rules laid down by the SRU don't apply to SRU employees.

It's very easy to knock the SRU for their shambolic decision making. However, I would applaud any initiative which encourages the growth of youth rugby and helps to take the load off the many volunteer coaches across the country.
One question, can anyone tell me if included in these numbers are the local club DO's who may get some funding from the SRU? If this is the case, the numbers are not quite so impressive.

#4 - take a reality check, old chap! The Dreaded Silver Croc appears to be "snappily" spot on at #1 & #2, above.

The pinheads cringing below the parapets along at the Murrayfield Numptorium will certainly have dredged up any tenuous tiny connection or involvement in order to get their "D.O. numbers" arithmetic to the quite extraordinary figure of 56....

A "network of 56 SRU youth coaches", indeed! Best laugh today.

More to come - that's for sure.
