Published Date: 23 August 2008
Hearts - Mole 45, Stewart pen 74

St Mirren - Mehmet 69
ST MIRREN were given a chasing by Hearts for the majority of this match as Csaba Laszlo's side delivered a commanding performance not properly reflected in the scoreline. Goals from Jamie Mole and Michael Stewart were sufficient against the ten-man visitors, who had Tonet Guerao dismissed in the first half.

In terms of possession there was only one side on the pitch, but a second-half equaliser from Billy Mehmet momentarily frightened the dominant hosts before Stewart converted a penalty which proved the difference. The midfielder then saw a second spot-kick saved by Mark Howard, the visiting goalkeeper, in injury time.

After his midweek international return, Stewart was peerless against St Mirren with a man-of-the-match display as he fed Mole for the opener before showing commendable mettle to score the decisive second from 12 yards. His late aberration deserved forgiveness given his earlier exploits.

David Obua, the Ugandan midfielder, made his Hearts debut alonside Slovakian Marian Kello. The presence of the on-loan FBK Kaunas goalkeeper means Laszlo has fielded three different men in goal in the opening three SPL fixtures, but in truth this had little effect on the hosts. Kello was reliable when called upon, which was rare, and in front of him some of Hearts' intricate passing was a joy to watch.

Obua began wide on the left of midfield as Andy Driver took up position on the right. With Larry Kingston supporting striker Mole, the attacking impetus quickly kicked in for the hosts. An adventurous gallop from Lee Wallace two minutes in saw him wind up in the penalty area collecting Mole's pass but Howard emerged quickly to save at the full-back's feet.

Five minutes later a mesmerising Stewart pass aimed at Mole carved the visiting defence wide open. The Englishman's effort eluded howard but Will Haining was well positioned to preserve the blank scoreline. Stewart, indeed, dominated midfield during the opening exchanges, his range of passing sublime in the extreme as he initiated attacking moves sometimes from just beyond the Hearts 18-yard line.

The hitherto quiet Kingston forced Howard into a splendid save on 17 minutes with a powerful 25-yard shot following some intricate passing from the hosts. It was evidence of their superiority at that stage with St Mirren toiling to gain a foothold in midfield.

Perhaps exasperation contributed to Gus MacPherson's side being reduced to ten men on 25 minutes. Tonet Gureao, the Spanish midfielder, executed late tackles on Driver and Stewart within the space of two minutes and was promptly dismissed by referee Calum Murray for two cautions. He could have little complaint, and it was refreshing to see an official granting Hearts justice, although Murray then blotted his copybook somewhat by booking Lee Wallace for what seemed an innocuous challenge on Gary Mason.

Despite their continual monopoly of possession the Edinburgh side did not convert control into goals until first-half stoppage time when Mole, again from Stewart's pass, sent an unstoppable drive soaring into the St Mirren net. Howard got a hand to it but was beaten by the shot's ferocity.

Hearts remained in the ascendency when the second half began with Kello exercised so infrequently that he must have pondered which was the easier league, the SPL or Lithuania's A Lyga. The Slovakian received a rude awakening on 69 minutes, however, when St Mirren fashioned an unlikely equaliser that left referee Murray's decision making open to serious question.

Kingston was penalised for tripping visiting substitute Hugh Murray despite appearing to make no contact whatsoever. The free-kick resulted in Murray teeing up Billy Mehmet at the back post for a simple tap-in. A few months ago this Hearts team would have imploded at the sense of unfairness surrounding the set-piece which preceded the goal, but inside five minutes their advantage was restored.

Driver collected the ball following a corner kick and, whilst attempting to evade full-back Franco Miranda, was tripped for a clear penalty which Stewart slotted beyond Howard.

In stoppage time, Jack Ross' wild lunge on Ksanavicius brought a second penalty for Hearts but Stewart's effort was this time saved by Howard low at the left post. Mehmet's last-gasp header from Miranda's free-kick bounced wide, allowing the Gorgie natives to breathe easy.

Hearts (4-4-1-1): Kello; Thomson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Driver, Karipidis, Stewart, Obua; Kingston; Mole. Subs: MacDonald, Glen, Nade 69 (for Mole), Ksanavicius 84 (for Kingston), Cesnauskis 49 (for Wallace), Palazuelos, Rapnik.

St Mirren (4-4-1-1): Howard; Ross, Potter, Haining, Miranda; O'Donnell, Mason, Brady, Tonet; Dorman; Mehmet. Subs: Smith, Murray 53 (for O'Donnell), Wyness, Hamilton 65 (for Brady), McAusland, McGinn 57 (for Dorman), Cuthbert.

Referee: Calum Murray.

Attendance: 13,357.

Evenin guys hows things

Just back from Tynie, what did you guys think?

Thought we played really well today, some really slick passing and moving Stewarts passing was great, dont think he should have taken the second penalty though. but hindsights a good thing. Obua was quietly effective might take him a few games to adjust, and get settled in, certainly looks like he has talent about him though, but playing him on the left might be a good idea as he doubles as good cover for wallace, who i thought had a good game today as well, better than what driver can.

Can't really say a lot about Kello, he didnt really have much to do, certainly not his fault the St Mirren goal.

Have to say though with a good striker the scoreline would have been 5 or 6 today, we created loads of chances, and totally dominated the game.

Bsed on the evidence of the 2 games played there so far is very possible, thats 2 games where we have been pegged back on level terms and on occasion we have shown fight and character to go in front again. We all know this would not have happened last season.

Graham H. my m8 said he heard a rumour about a striker, Mitchell Schet of Feyenoord on loan. his coach wants him to get some 1st team experience. i belive he also played for the dutch under 16,17,20. could be some truth in it cos its quite obscure to be complete rumour!! Im sure pundit will be on wiki or something and give us his complete stats. bigfannymac will also be at hand to tell us he's ,and i quote "unheard of. he must have a rank agent if he couldnt get him a loan at an english 2nd div team" unquote.

BTO. correct, nobody should be getting too excited as we are only three games in to a 38 schedule! things do look promising although the 11 game yardstick is better to make our preliminary jugements on how teams are doing. Also agree that vlad's being a bit of a petrie when it comes to signing players although hearst dont have a huge turnover such as rangers and celtic so i suppose we have to live within our means for the time being

The emphasise on team work and passing movement is evident in this Hearts side, the will to stick together and win stands out.
A tough match against bottom 6 side and 3 points in the bag.

Only complaint is the amount of success in front of goal,
once the killer touch is settled everything will happen.

Well done Hearts

Brilliant homecoming for wee Shaun-it's like he was never away. Great to be back at the top of the league where we belong. Feel though we should play a five in midfield to combat the opposition who always do this. Would also allow us to get McGeady, Maloney, Brown, Hartley and Naka playing together.
The Spanish lad looked a player when he came on too. Hope he can build on a promising start.

Shall we look at Hibs opening Fixures and results?

Killie 1-0 Hibs
Hibs 3-2 Falkirk
ICT 1-1 Hibs

All 3 teams Hibs finished above in the league last season, 1 win a draw and a defeat.

Now Hearts

Hearts 3-2 Motherwell
Rangers 2-0 Hearts
Hearts 2-1 St Mirren

of the 3 teams we have played 2 finished above us in the league, 2 wins and a loss. From basically the same set of players as last year.

Whos the trumpet now...forget that your not a trumpet your just an utter phanny.

Sorry i must have missed something, since when did this become a rangers/aberdeen or celtic/falkirk thread

But since the subject of maloney is raised, how many times do you think that dirty little unwashed piece of garbage will dive before he is booked? Im guessing as many times as he likes. Mcgeady diving on one side of the pitch Maloney on the other, it'll be like watching the syncronised diving at the olympics. Heard yet more referre decisions go celtics away again, first goal was seemingly a hand ball.

I think WGS has a dilemma on his hands. We regularly struggle to boss games where we play 4 in the middle, yet we usually win the games. Rangers OTOH boss games, but often struggle to score. If we played five in the middle, we wouldn't have seen Falkirk over-running our midfield at times during the match-but we still scored thrice, so what am I complaining about?!

The EN/Scotsman has closed all OF threads due to the constant Sectarian and bigotted comments, the filth cant be trusted anywhere to hold a decent debate about football without bringing religion into it. Admittedly not all are like that but the vast majority, thats why the threads are always closed now.

Hearts are opening forums on the Hearts site soon, just waiting for them to open then they are welcome to discuss whatever they like without us as the majority of people on here are joining hearts forums

Not the brightest are you son?

Ill explain for the last time, please read slowly.

Someone saying they have heard something is not the same as having an opinion. I did not make the comment based on an opinion, I made the comment based on hearsay if you like, albeit hearsay from commentators that have actually saw the incident. As i said i made a comment not an opinion, and was backed up by me saying "I HEARD" and "SEEMINGLY"

I suggest you look up opinion in the dictionary son. Because the only one making an idiot of themselves here is you.

By this report, hearts played well and deserved three points but I can't understand why they never play well at Ibrox.

I think they can beat anyone at home Hearts and have shown in recent seasons they can win at Paradise but Ibrox seems to be a place they always fail to turn it on - last week being yet another example.

When was the last time Hearts won at Ibrox? The last time I can remember them giving losers rangers a doing was when Alan Johnston scored a hat trick and that must be nearly ten years ago.

As for Maloney and champs? You aint seen nothing yet...wait until Aiden hits form and McD and Broonaldo also - we are going to take some stopping in Scotland and Europe.

Today, the Celts looked like champions for the first time this season.

Maloney, Naka,McGeady,Loovens,Hinkel(even him),Hartley, Boruc, Wilson all showing superb form.

Samaras didn't do a lot, but he bagged two goals and what else can you ask of a striker ? His link up play with Maloney, I have to say, was better than anything I've seen between Jan and McDonald.
The fact that these two had never played together in their puffs was jaw dropping.

Samaras' run for the first goal was far from obvious, but Maloney spotted it and weighted the perfect pass and Big Sami expertly rounded the keeper before drilling it in low.

The one-two they played off each other for the second was a joy to behold....we've never seen Jan and McDonald pulling something like that off...skill, vision, mutual understanding, lethal.

The Champions go into next week's match in very good order, and Strachan has a few tough choices, one being whether to start Crosas. He is the real deal and it's easy to see why barca have retained a right of preemption.

Crosas was an absolute pro.

Very assured and confident on the ball, never flustered , positionally aware, inch perfect with the pass....he was only on the park 20 minutes and got plenty of the ball.

He picked out Naka with a fifty yard pass with hair splitting accuracy...Naka was almost at the corner flag and killed the ball in one touch...we really looked like Barca at that point, and it wasn't just those two.

It is rarely easy to beat rearrangerz, and I don't for one minute think that three points are assured...we will have to play as we did today in the second half, showing our skill, verve, and imagination.

Strachan will be purring with delight tonight...that was as good an spl performance as I have ever seen from Celtic under his reign...in fact, I'm struggling to think of one to match it.

Falkirk must be gutted. They actually payed well, particularly in the first half. But as the game wore on, Celtic just turned the screw more and more , and by the end of the match, this decent Falkirk side were chasing shadows and fortunate not to be on the wrong end of an absolute hammering.

Stick to the bigotry, thats what your good at.

The Edinburgh Festival is a bit too arty farty for me.

Mind you, if you get laid with some nice bit of crumpet from Singapore or Hawaii, it would be well worth the bovver.

Bit unkind there.
Heard there had 3 full days of sunshine this year
I had some business in govan a few years ago and the taxi driver was not sure where to take me.
Hang your hand out the window and you will know.
Had my hand out the window and my watch had gone.
Your in Govan now he said.

My dear jambo,

You fail to recognise that my lapse into the vernacular was an ironic gesture and not to be taken literally.

Art farty types my dear is, for me, a reference to those who wish that they possessed some artistic talent but refuse to come to terms with the fact that they have none.

They are insufferable, and should be avoided.

Dear o dear, I think that king of comment just sums you up, bigotted and thick.

But i suppose the only festival your probably used to is one that involves a republican band marching through the streets, playing their filth, while you manky lot are sitting on the kerb swigging your buckie.

#89 Festival crumpet does tend to be exceptional.
Glasgow has loads of nice burdz too however.

You couldnt get laid in a masage parlour with a £50 note tied round your nob.

"Nice bits of crumpet" prefer a guy with a bit of class and obviously one that has heard of a bar of soap. I dont think shell suits and sovy rings will impress them.

So what about the 'types' that have had no desire to have any artistic talent, but simply want to appreciate the talent of others?

Am i correct in thinking that you find anyone with an interest in music, art or theatre 'insufferable, and to be avoided'?

Young Iraqi lad signs a pro contract with Celitc....scores a hat-trick on his debut, and gets carried off shoulder high...He rings home all excited to tell his mum the good news and asks how the family are...."How are we" says his mum...."The house has been bombed, your dads been shot, your sisters been raped, the cars been burnt to a crisp, and i've been robbed and mugged at gunpoint"....."why the fu*k did you bring us to Glasgow you little tw4t"

The trouble is my dear that there are so many of those 'erty ferties' mingling with the brew, that the prospect of encountering their banal chatter carries prohibitive risk my dear fellow.

Take my advice old chap...enjoy the arts throughout the year, as much at Xmas as New Year...but see the festival for what it is : a chance to get your hole with some exotic bird.

evening hearts fans. sorry not going to read what has gone before 'cos me has got lager impaired eyes, brain and keyboard skills.

hearts were tremendous for an hour or so. best game stewart has played for us, although his penalties were powder puff. driver was also superb, as was obua. kingston played well in patches, at times it looked like he might be better in the centre.

well impressed by obua. the boy has it all as far as i'm concerned, great touch, awareness, calmness, athleticism and a great versatility that he can play in different positions.

one very much up the jacksie for the halfwits and non-football fans that said that stewart is sh***.

as an aside, you should never let the same player take a second penalty.

Take it easy bro.

I seek no quarrell with you. This territorialist attitude towards the thread asks a few questions bro.
Yes , I'm from Glasgow, and I know that SOME jambos are a bit 'rearrangerz' in outlook.

Believe it or not, Vladimir is the best thing that happened to your club in the last hundred years.
He wants to bring success , and he's signing the cheques AND he's kept you in tynecastle.

His biggest mistake was sacking George Burley...and it was a big one... but I'm sure he's learned from that and you jambos should get right behind him...and stop playing jobbies when yiz go tae ibrox.

Three points is at least keeping the team clear of the relegation zone.So far so good. The top six is possible.
The team does appear to have some abilty, but a far more worrying development is the Lithuanian keeper which the manager claimed was his signing(on the strength of a single game ).That was stretching credibilty right away!

The keeper has confirmed that a deal was struck and it was Vlad who was behind this transfer,so Vlad is now employing new tactics (called a load of lies)!
He is still running the show, and Banks has been treated really shabbily. Of course he would move given the chance. Who wants to work for a Lying Lithuanian madman?
