Laszlo must ensure his head rules his heart

HARMONY is in the air at Hearts. Csaba Laszlo declared yesterday he had had a "productive" meeting with club owner Vladimir Romanov this week, and revealed the topics discussed included a plan of action for the January transfer window.
The manager would not reveal any details about the number of players the club hope to bring in, far less their identity. But after Laszlo had his hopes of recruiting two more players thwarted in the close season, the signs are positive. The funds available may well be modest, but at least Romanov has appeared willing to discuss a strengthening of the squad.

Laszlo also repeated his insistence, first made after the midweek Co-operative Insurance cup win over Celtic, that he would welcome any incoming sporting director. Romanov himself confirmed yesterday he had discussed the post with Ivan Svabovic, and the manager said, "we need always good guys that can understand football".

It remains to be seen if the appointment of Svabovic will be completed. Previous moves to bring new men on to the staff have either been aborted – as in the case of Eugenius Riabovas – or simply turned out to have been non-starters – Kestutis Latoza being a case in point.

If Hearts win at Motherwell this afternoon, and if they consolidate their improvement in the coming weeks, Romanov may decide that the introduction of Svabovic is no longer as necessary as he had thought. He has said his visit to the club on Tuesday helped dispel some of the problems the team had faced: why, then, should he complicate matters by reintroducing another tier of management?

On the other hand, there is the strong possibility that the harmonious mood of this week will not last, whatever results Hearts achieve today and in the weeks to come. Indeed, Laszlo has already struck a discordant note by saying he was surprised he had not been connected more firmly with the manager's job at Celtic after Gordon Strachan left in the summer, and by claiming he has turned down several offers to work elsewhere.

The manager strove to put a more Romanov-friendly spin on those remarks at Riccarton yesterday, insisting that if he retained the backing of the Hearts players and officials he could be linked with every job in the world without being tempted to move. The players back him all right, but it may take more than such an insistence to persuade Romanov that Laszlo is committed to staying at Tynecastle and working within the restraints imposed upon him.

On Thursday, as Laszlo's comments about the Celtic post and others were becoming known, Romanov issued a statement of his own, carried in yesterday's Scotsman. After taking some of the credit for the win against Celtic, the Kaunas-based businessman recalled some of the difficulties he faced during his first year in control of Hearts, claiming he had had to battle against a "virus" infecting Scottish football.

"I was really shocked when they told me that George Burley and Gordon Strachan shared the same agent," Romanov said, explaining he thought the Scottish game was too incestuous. "No wonder that after they destroyed Hearts, managers got rewarded with promotions and new posts," he continued.

"It is such an attitude to football that I have to fight against. This virus infects the players with indifference. They do not have faith in the future any more."

The relationship between Romanov and Burley, whom he appointed Hearts manager in the summer of 2005, deteriorated within months. Romanov believed then – and appears still to do so today – that Burley planned to move to another club and take Hearts' leading players with him.

Burley, it will be remembered, was very cautious in his public utterances as Hearts manager, as he is, by and large, in his current post as Scotland boss. He did not talk of concrete interest from other clubs, nor did he express surprise at being overlooked for vacancies.

In other words, he kept his head down as much as possible, and kept his team at the top of the SPL. If that behaviour was enough for Romanov to decide to part company with Burley, how much more provoked might the owner feel by Laszlo's comments?

Granted, Laszlo is a more astute politician than Burley, but over the past two or three months he has been in constant danger of over-estimating his ability to talk his way out of trouble. If he were content at Hearts would he really talk about being linked with the Hannover job, or the South Africa job, as he has done? Or is such talk tantamount to putting his CV on the table and trying to ensure an escape route from Tynecastle will be there if and when required?

Laszlo may think that declaring he could take Liverpool to their first title in two decades is no more than an example of the unshakeable self-belief that any successful coach needs. Romanov might not look on it so benignly.

"Granted, Laszlo is a more astute politician than Burley". What utter tosh! After the last few comments to come out of Csaba's mouth he's proved he is certainly not one to think before he acts. He's made himself look really foolish indeed. Then again he might be a polictian after all!

The article tells us nothing about todays match at Motherwell only tells us that Laszlo is a slaver

A guy who has done well says what he feels and gets slagged?

Typical negative, Scottish mince, imo.

What are you supposed to say?

I don't know why everyone is bothering with us beating Celtic as I am really a mince manager and all the credit has to go to the players for ignoring all the garbage I instructed them to carry out and it is to their credit that they once again made me look like an idiot and a walloper who cannot open his mouth without far ting.

I did not even bother to read the article as yesterdays revelations unmasked Shabby for what he is, a slavering idiot! Liverpool/man Utd/Celtic/Rangers manager indeed! But he was correct on one point, he wants to manage a BIG team, tee hee. ;>)

And, as #2 points out, there is nothing on todays hertz or Hibs games? Ahhh, but it is the hootsman we are reading, when have they ever been on the ball?

Well life in The SPL is richer with Casaba about purely on the entertainment level. Maybe Mogga could take some hints on how liven himself up! As for his Chairman's comments at the AGM no surprise that he played to the crowd....Dr Death keeps spinning.

YET MORE UTTER RUBBISH FROM BATHCHAIR.
It's so easy to have a pop at Hearts, as, they do have a volatile owner, prone to unpredictable behaviour.
If you listen to what Laszlo says, he actually pledges his sevice to Hearts, and admits turning down approaches to honour his commitment to the club. His comments re Celtic are bang on, why did they not consider him for the job? He would have had better credentials than TM. He is not saying he wanted the job, or the Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal ones either, just that he believes in his ability to produce the goods, IF GIVEN THE REQUIRED BACKING.
Just perhaps he is giving Romanov a little nudge in the right direction.
It's just too easy to always put a negative spin on anything coming out of Tynecastle... journo's like Bathchair are lazy, unimaginative, pseudo intellectuals, who believe that extravegant use of the English language equates to good journalism.
I could do better.

"perhaps he is giving Romanov a little nudge in the right direction"

I think it will be that clown Romanov that will be doing the nudging, remember a guy called Burley?

7/Spot on we all know the agenda from this so called news paper and this person who has such down on all things Hearts. They will twist it any way they can to make a down beat story.Only muppets will lap it up as seen from some of the unsurprising posters above.
We beat one of the OF in Glasgow in the cup and are now in a semi final,Its not main event of the season but it is a step on the road back for the team.It should be positive day for us and I hope we can build on it with a result today.
Keep the faith Jambos dont listen to the muppets.
JT for life.

Lazy "journalism". Yesterdays article by Bathgate was sufficient, it pretty much covered everything.
Why is it so ridiculous to imagine you could do a job for Liverpool?
Sure Csaba has not won anything yet, but the lad is entitled to his aspirations and to say as much.
I again draw the attention of other sceptics to the number of men who have managed clubs in this league and moved south to do very well.
It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Laszlo could get an offer from south of the border.
Didn't John Hughes say something along the same lines a few months ago?

Enough of all this talk .Let`s see what happens today.Another skelping by a wee team will put them back again. The jury`s firmly out and the strikers available look very guilty of a inability to score.

If last years SPL player of the year said that he aspired to moving to a better league and a bigger club at some stage in his career, would he be a "slavering idiot" as well? No. So why is last years SPL manager of the year called this for doing exactly the same? There's more evidence of Gordon Smiths 364 being a "slavering idiot" here than Csaba.....

I don't see why people accuse Stuart Bathgate of being negative about Hearts.

He tells it like it is and he rightly suggests that Csaba is perhaps in danger of pushing Romanov too far.

That said, it's clear to everyone that Romanov needs to invest in the team and I think Csaba is correct to air that view. It's what everyone thinks, after all.

I'm encouraged to read that Romanov has discussed strengthening the team: that's a step in the right direction for me.

It's a great shame that Csaba has to mouth-off to the media before Romanov makes an appearance and deigns to show that he might give a sh*t about the team and his paying customers.

I am a slavering idiot am I?

Did I go to the papers and say I wanted to be prime minister? or did I say I wanted to be king? Manage BP? be bigger than the Beatles? No I did not, everyone wants to be something but most people don't let the voices in their heads come out of their gobs, take the Moron tinted glasses off and see what is in front of you. The guys a clown for saying that to the papers, and if you speak to any sane person and ask them what they thought of his comments, they will tell you the same.

You sir are the slavering idiot, not me.

"he wants to manage a BIG team" he also said that, you have chosen to ignore that part, is he disrespectful to your team and the supporters? I think so, does he not know you guys have 400,000 supporters? The man IS an idiot.

This article is no where near Bathgate's worst.
He has been more acidic towards Hearts many times over.
His last paragraph is far from stupid.

Either Casbah issued a come and get me plea to all teams requiring a new manager or his self confidence (ego ?)is of a magnitude that he genuinely felt insulted that he was not on Celtic's short list.(maybe rightly so on CL's LAST year form) Hopefully the latter is the case but we must remember that any positive mention towards the forces of darkness in weegielend is abhored by Vlad.Basically VR regards them as the ultimate enemy so I cannot see how he will look at CL's comments as anything other than possible treason. Hopefully a bout of rationality will break out between them.
What Bathgate seems to miss is the chances that CL by mentioning other teams as potential employers is thinly veiling a threat that he is offski if no support is coming in January and that he doesn't really want to leave - he just wants to partially get his own way by signing at least one striker.......at least that is what I rather naively hope.
With only 4 months left on Millers and Kyles contracts come January, you could get them both for a total of just over £200k rather than pre-contract agrements. We have all the other players in place - I say yet again - sign one of them and we could yet get 3rd - sign both and it would be a good bet.
IF CL AND VR SEE COMMON SENSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And we stop certain folk from going on the pi55 to the Cavendish prior to games !

busbyfh,

12 & 14 - You are in ways both right
Say Anthony Stokes came out in the press and said that he was disapointed that Celtic had not thought of him as a cure for their striker "crisis" - just how popular would that make him with the FFFHibs fans ?
Football folk think these things of course - by making certain things public as either naive, stupid,or an attempt at moral blackmail for the powers that be.

CL should not have said what he said, the way that he said it. He should now "explain" his words to clear things up. (or at least to cover things up)
