RANGERS have beaten off competition from West Brom to land defender Madjid Bougherra from Charlton for £2.5 million.
The 25-year-old French-born Algeria internationalist, who can play in the middle of a back four or as a defensive midfielder, signed a four-year deal with the Ibrox side after completing a medical and could make his debut in a friendly against Liverpool this weekend.

Bougherra said: "I came to football very late but I want to progress here and keep getting better. It is my dream to do good things for Rangers.

"I am a defender but can also play in midfield, too, and will be happy to play wherever I am picked.

"First of all, I want to come and play games but I know there are good defenders here so it will be hard. Hopefully, I can move forward and learn from them."

Bougherra will join fellow Algerian Brahim Hemdani at Ibrox and he has revealed he took advice from his international team-mate before making the move.

He added: "I spoke to Brahim about coming here and he spoke very well about the club, the facilities and the fans. He pushed me to come here so I am very pleased I have signed for Rangers."

good signing i think, but i thought priority is midfield, is this another strange one? Have we panicked?, it came from nowhere, if Mowbray thought he was a player, thats good enough for me, he has built an outstanding squad with WBA, Good Luck to him, i hope this now means Brahim is stayng put! Well Done SDM, but lets get the other 2 we need too, we now know who were playing next, Aalborg, lets get 2 midfielders and the team looks much healthier, funny that, it only takes 2 or 3 players for chemistry to work.Still need rid of Adam, McCulloch, Dailly, Cousin and Darcheville, getting shot of them will make the squad stronger, i have no doubt.Thats better Rangers, its more like us a wee bit!

A lot of tims are saying it and unfortunately it would make sense. Is Cuellar for the off?

As much as i rate Cuellar if we got 9m for him and reinvested in some creative players i think it would be worth it.

As you said strange to sign another defender when we have Weir, Broadfoot, Cuellar, Webster and now Bougherra.

If this was to be the case i would rather the club and player just showed a bit of honesty but i suppose these days that is too much to ask.

Looks a very usefull signing though, i checked out a Charlton forum and they all seem to rate him highly.

JJ as one who doesnt have his ear to the ground,I havent heard any rumours re Cuellar but it does seem strange that yet another defender is bought whilst the midfield is left with a gaping hole....

And its inconceivable that they wont add to the midfield. It certainly looks as if rather than not having the money for Davis, they decided he wasnt worth what Fulham wanted.
They have just spent 2.5m and WILL spend i reckon at least that again on a midfielder so either there is more money there than we thought or there are some outs on the horizon, probably before the next transfer deadline of Aug 7th.....

#2. i reckong he will playing holding role, with hemdani, but that means back to 4-5-1, i think the centre mid 3 is boughera, hemdani and tommo, i could be wrong, but its the EASY midfield choice for Walter, he didnt even have to try to bring in creativity, he must still be trying to sign the 2 midfielder genius's we need, MY preference would be to drop weir and FREE Dailly, cuellar and boughera at centre half, i dont think the club will sell Cuellar unless we get 15m, they learned there lesson with Hutton, the fans wont stand for that again, we cant sell our MVP in Cuellar then bring in a 2.5m guy from championship!! King Carlos is going nowhere.Greta signings, i hope!!! I like the fact everyone says he plays good football, we dont have good football in the team.I KNOW we still have money left, enough for Davis and another set piece specialst, DONT BELIVE ANYTHING anyone tells you about Rangers finances, there are only a few people who know whats going on there and im one of them!

If Kaunus get lucky and Cuellar does not play next week. Do you not reckon that the opportunity to cash in on him while he is at his most optimal value will at least be considered ?

Nobody is rushing to buy any of the surplus of strikers that you have and how much cash will that initiative raise anyway?

Dailly, Wier and Webster have all just recently re signed new contracts and Broadfoot has started to be used in that position and now we have Bougherra arriving.

Considering that Hutton went for 9m and at todays prices how much do you think Cuellar is worth in the current transfer market?

How much more would Cuellar earn if he moved to an EPL club ?

Do you honestly think that if this was dangled in his face that he would say no I love Rangers too much and the SPL is far more important to me than high level exposure like EPL or CL ?

Why would Rangers be hostile towards a Cuellar bid yet fully embrace the bid for Hutton six months previous in the middle of a campaign. He was persuaded out of the door and he´s a true blue. There was also inadequate cover for Huttons position - ask Kirk Broadfoot.

Bougherra was bought on the back of Wednesday awful result and performance. If Rangers had beaten Kaunas 2.0 he would be a west Brom player by now I reckon. Cuellar might well stay depending but last nights acquisition was insurance cover. It is classic Murray behaviour. If Cuellar does stay I wouldn´t at all be surprised if he done a Boumsong

When ReaRangers signed Whittaker from the Hibs, all the bluenoses stated - surely, we've got a good RB in Mutton? He'll be good for the squad.

Minty stated - Mutton isny for sale.

Then, biff bam bosh...lo and behold, who's that getting a 1m pay off to go down to Londinium. Surely not Mutton?

ReaRangers sign a CB, all the bluenoses state - surely we've got a good CB in Cuellar? He'll be good for the squad.

Minty says - Cuellar isny for sale.

Does anyone see a pattern?

TBH im hoping the Davis saga is/was a result of us deciding to have a GOOD look around. When they were asking for 4m i thought it was a bit much for a player quite similar to Thomson.
Good player and i wouldnt be unhappy at his signing but i still feel we need more of a CREATIVE player.

chazbud,

Of Course I want Ibrox empty I´m a Celtic man. :-)

I think those are fair points made previously regarding whittaker and Murray.

What I am saying is that you have 6 cb´s on the books. 3 of them just have penned new deals. Weir, Dailly and Webster .. all with international experience .. so they wont be getting free transfers thats for sure. Broadfoot has been playing there too also as its his natural position and last night another CB was bought.

Thats 6 first team squad players for 2 positions!!!

Come on the writing for Cuellar is on the wall and even if he is fit and is brought in against the Danes .. I can see Murray doing a Boumsong with him as that´s always a good time to sell CB´s to struggling EPL clubs.

Can you not even contemplate that ??? or am I just a deranged paarnoid tim on the wind up ?

I was saying exactly the same thing to my mate not 20mins ago.

TBH if someone came in and offered 9/10m i would grudgingly accept it IF the bulk of it was spent on the midfield. To me, that would make sense.

The worry would of course be the same happening as with the Hutton transfer which quite possibly cost us the league.

Would Hutton's presence have been worth an extra 4 or 4 points over 6 mths? Quite possibly. All ifs and buts i know but still a point worth considering.

chazbud,

#19 hutton sale cost us at least 6 points and more goals in europe, it was a major blow, they wont be ripped off again, i say 15m, NOTHING LESS, but we dont need to sell him to get the 2 mids we need, we just need Walter to go and get them, settle the squad down then get rid of the rubbish.

As I said I think to you yesterday Rangers need to just concentrate on the SPL title. With Celtic fighting in Europe it will make it easier to gel new young partnerships together like between Webster, Bougherra and Broadfoot. It should also give good signings like Whittaker and Thomson more time to feel confident in a blue jersey.

I obviously dont watch Rangers much as you but for me your player of the year last season was Mac Gregor. Celtic have done well defensively with SPL standard player because they have a class goalie behind them. Rangers should do the same.

Rangers should not do with BF as what Celtic done with Paul Mc Stay..he needs a year out. The money that Cuellar would make would allow or a couple of good creative midfield players and that should allow you to avoid watching drudgery.

Even as a Celtic fan I always watch Rangers games and honestly last season was tough going for me. I cant imagine what its like for you guys and girls (sorry chazbud)

Watty proved at Everton that he can keep a ship afloat on minimum resources and that´s why he´s there. he definitely needs to take the next step up. Lafferty will eventually come good.

Hanging on to Mac Gregor was a good move but as a Celtic man I hope he´s punted .. he´s worth as many points as Boruc is to us and what Cuellar is to yourselves. Rangers need a couple of dynamic midfield players desperately and if Cuellar is the key I would bite that particular bullet. Bed them in for a year and bring on some of the youth. Strachan done it with the likes of Maloney, Beattie, Marshall, Wallace, he gave them some exposure and then managed to punt them all for a good fee.

Watty´s pragmatic approach has served Rangers well but he and the club need to move on ... just for the sake of the perception of the Scottish product internationally .... its time for my paranoia pills

good luck against Liverpool I´ve never forgiven them for stealing King Kenny.

JJ,

you may laugh when I say this and I mean this honestly but Tommy Graveson (he whom watty signed for the Toffees) would be perfect for Rangers this year. A dynamic midfield to box midfielder. He doesn´t track back much but that´s not what you need. I bet if he (Watty) could afford it he would do it. Players Like Boyd, Cousin Darcheville, would love to see him in the team

.. and at 40k a week its a snip. :-)

btw I´m definitely a tim but I´m like the Murphy´s
