DUNS Juniors beat Gorgie Hearts 9-6 to lift the George Salmon under-13 Cup after an end-to-end final that had the lot.
Both sides went into extra time level at 5-5 after an enthralling 80 minutes, with Gorgie striker Cesar Ogwal levelling the game in regulation time with a last-second header.
But four goals from Duns in extra-time sealed the win, and left the Gorg
ie players broken-hearted. The match at the Gyle Recreation Ground started at a ferocious pace, and it wasn't long before the back of the Duns net was bulging.
A great dribble by Gorgie's David Boyle helped him into the box where he then finished from an almost impossible angle on the right. In the opening minutes, Gorgie were the better side, and they were unlucky not to go two up on 12 minutes when Damien Noble shot just wide.
But Duns were looking a threat on the counter-attack and managed to score two quick goals against the run of play. The first came when right-back Grant Wilson tapped home from a George Watson cross.
Almost as soon as the Duns players had stopped celebrating, they were at it again. This time it Jordan Blaikie finished well after being released on goal by Matt Lawson's fine through ball. Both sides were showing some great touches early on, and big Gorgie striker Ogwal was particularly impressive playing just off team mate David Boyle. And it was Ogwal who pulled Gorgie level on 30 minutes when he smashed a thunderbolt free-kick past Duns keeper Ben Boucher. It was turning into a great contest with the spectators hoping for more of the same in the second half and they weren't to be disappointed, with three goals in five minutes just after the restart.
Boyle scored his second after a wonderful dribble, before Duns made it 4-3 with two good finishes slotted home by Jordan Wood.
It was great watching two sides that were clearly very evenly-matched, playing different styles of football. Gorgie played a short passing game, and Duns used their pace on the counter-attack.
And it was Gorgie's passing game that brought them level on 77 minutes when front two Ogwal and Boyle combined well, and Ogwal blasted a good pass from his team-mate past the keeper.
But Duns seemed to have a reply to everything Gorgie had to offer, and looked to have won the game when Watson's shot took a deflection off a Gorgie defender to make it 5-4. With seconds remaining, and Duns players eyeing up the cup, Gorgie were throwing everything forward, and this fairytale final was to have yet another shock in store. Ogwal's header was cleared off the line but he reacted to nod in the rebound and complete his hat-trick.
At the start of extra-time, Gorgie were still on a high from that last-gasp equaliser and went ahead for the third time in the match with the excellent Boyle sealing his hat-trick after taking advantage of a defensive error. Gorgie looked to have pulled off a great escape, but were soon brought crashing down to reality five minutes before full-time. Duns, urged on by their screaming coach, quickly upped their game and hit four goals in succession to bury their opponents.
Two goals from Jordan Blaikie and one each from Matt Lawson and Grant Wilson gave Duns a deserved reward for a fantastic cup final performance.
