MOTHERWELL manager Mark McGhee last night admitted his team had been out of their depth as they were eliminated from the Uefa Cup in the first round by Nancy.
The French side won 2-0 at Fir Park, completing a 3-0 aggregate triumph to deliver a huge anti-climax, both for Motherwell on their return to European football for the first time in 13 years and for McGhee on his managerial debut in continental competition.

"We were outclassed tonight," said McGhee. "We can't deny Nancy were a class above us. I thought they were very good, a lot better than they were two weeks ago.

"It is something we have to aspire to, that movement and touch. That was probably as good as we can play in many ways, at times our possession and movement was alright, and if we have that tempo and performance level against Falkirk on Sunday we should win."

McGhee insisted he did not regret the comments made in his Sunday newspaper column where he expressed the hope his team "would kick Nancy's teeth in".

"When I said that, I was talking euphemistically, about trying to beat them," he said. "I made sure I shook hands with their manager before the game and he knew things were fine."

Pablo Correa, Nancy's Uruguayan coach, shrugged off the pre-match controversy, saying: "I shook hands with McGhee before and after the match, there is no problem."

Strange how the media seem to think McGhee is above criticism.

If this was Strachans team he'd get it in the neck.

Manager/pundit McGhee has good pals in the media so it'll be the players fault.

Im fairly ambivalent about McGhee but being from the area have a soft spot for the well. However I have to say that its always the players fault. They simply couldnt handle the other team.

#3 They can't slag McGhee off too much - he's manager in waiting for ra sellick is he not?

Wonder if McGhee still thinks it was a good idea not to get on that plane.

I ment to write "future Celtic boss McGhee" and you are spot on about that.

McGhee can talk the talk & Im sure he'd talk his way into the Celtic hot seat.

I certainly hope this happens & it probably will.

Wonder if he'd keep using the "kick their teeth in" line before a Rangers game?

Very honest assessment from McGhee and completely right.

Strachan always gets stick and I think he quite enjoys it.

Never a populist just a decent coach who's delivered 3 in a row on a vastly restricted budget and with no get out of jail card(Larsson).

McGhee has clearly got a few Bears backs up.

He'll be Public enemy No1 for the usual suspects when he's leading the Hoops to our ten in a row.

Waiting and counting.............

Interesting comments from Charlie Nicholas today.

He thinks Lawwell has too much say in team affairs.

Knacka was recently quoted as saying he'd need to discuss his futre with Lawwell (no mention of GS).

He also suspects (as I do) that Loovens was signed becasue Rangers were reported to be in for him.

This happened with Riorden, Kenny Miller, Scott Brown &
Paul Hartley.

So who runs the show?

Royalty-sorry for the lateness of my response.I've been out all day on business.

I would imagine lawwell runs part of the show and has a lot of say in what goes on in close communication with Strachan,Pendrey,Lennon, lyth and the scouts.

By all account Lawwell and Strachan have a very good working relationship.

Does it matter who runs the show as you put it???Or is it better to have a close knit team running their part of the show.

Personally i'd prefer the latter.

As for Nicholas. His comments regularly lack class and insight.
