Luke Donald climbed the leaderboard as the second round of the US Open began today but it was a different story for overnight co-leader Kevin Streelman.
Donald started the day three strokes behind Streelman and Justin Hicks but found himself only one off the pace near the midpoint of his round at Torrey Pines.

After a pair of pars to start, Donald birdied the third hole to get into the red numbers
. He then added his second birdie of the day at the par-four seventh to trail Hicks by one.

Hicks, who was tied with Streelman at three under after a 68 in the first round, has an afternoon tee time and was alone in first after Streelman made a mess of the par-three third hole.

Streelman ended up with a plugged lie in the greenside bunker after his tee shot came up short. He blasted out but his ball went over the green into the brush and his third shot rolled off the front of the green to a chipping area, from where he needed three putts to finish the hole with a triple-bogey.

He parred his next two holes but had a double-bogey at the sixth before bouncing back with birdies at seven and nine to reach level par.

Donald was among the best of the early starters, who included Ernie Els and 2006 US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy. Playing in the same group, Els was level par through six holes and Ogilvy one over – putting both on one under, two strokes behind Hicks.

Robert Dinwiddie found birdies easier to come by today, but unfortunately the same could be said for bogeys.

He carded a 73 yesterday with 16 pars and a pair of bogeys, and he remained at two over after playing his first 10 holes in even par.

Dinwiddie started his round with consecutive birdies and carded a birdie at five to bounce back from a bogey at the fourth, his first of the day.

But he then dropped shots at five and six and closed his front nine with a birdie before starting the back nine with a bogey at the 10th.
The feature group of the first two days – Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott – tee off at 9.36pm BST.
