Basso may be forced out as Vlad 'meddling' in Hearts keeper row

Published Date: 24 April 2008
ANTHONY BASSO'S agent expects the Frenchman to leave Hearts after being excluded from the team due to interference from Vladimir Romanov.
Stephen Frail, the club's interim manager, was forced to tell Basso he would not play against St Mirren last weekend after the goalkeeper's contract negotiations broke down.

Romanov was irked by the lack of progress during discussions with Basso's agent, Tomasso Angelini, and ordered that the 28-year-old be demoted despite an outstanding performance against Kilmarnock in Hearts' previous match. Steve Banks was reinstated for the 3-2 victory after recovering from illness.

The interference contradicts previous public statements that Frail would have full autonomy on team selection pending the arrival of a new manager, and Angelini believes Basso's long-term future is now doubtful.

"The coach told Anthony he could not play because he had been told by people above not to pick him," said Angelini. "This is interference from the owner. It's not the first time it has happened because I know of similar situations involving other players at Hearts recently. As Anthony's agent, this is something I cannot condone.

"I think Anthony's future will be elsewhere now. He wants to stay with Hearts but I cannot see Romanov or his people coming back and wanting to sit round the table again." Basso's current two-year contract is not due to expire until summer 2009 but the club had indicated their intention to extend his stay.

Angelini maintains negotiations were at a very early stage and believes the treatment meted out to Basso is unwarranted. The former Auxerre player recorded clean sheets against Kilmarnock and Dundee United in recent weeks after Banks fell foul of a virus.

The agent spoke with representatives of Ukio Bankas Investment Group to outline his client's contract wishes but was then forced to reject what he clams was a derisory offer.

"When I speak to Hearts I always deal with different people, that makes everything more difficult. We did not want a big contract, we told them what we were looking for and they came back with their offer. It was refused and then Anthony is dropped.

"I know the people I speak to are only there to represent Romanov and that he will make the decisions."

Meanwhile, Calum Elliot has returned to training and should be available to face Inverness this weekend.

Losing 'Bomb Scare' Basso is not a problem, although he did have a cracking game at Killi, I am more worried that someone actually wanted to extend his stay as the guy just can't catch a ball cleanly.

Unfortunately, this is more bad press and, if we are to believe someone who clearly has a grudge, proves what we had all feared that Vlad still has an impact on team selection. While this means Frail may not suffer from insanity given some of 'his' selctions, it proves he is just another puppet as the Hearts fans continued to be lied to. Romanov if we ever get a 'proper' manager leave team affairs to football people for once!

Dear God man, I know you're foreign but please listen. It's not Vlad that's the problem, it's the hobos. They've taken on the Scotsman, and like to "deluge" these boards with drivel, as JT74 above says.

Fortunately, I believe a solution is round the corner. Hobos will no doubt become more concerned with their own problems over the next few months (Should the new stand have 1 tier or 2?! Will Mixu shop at home or abroad this summer?!) thus leaving the Hearts alone.

Lets be honest, this meddling has never gone away despite all the claims coming out of Tynecastle.
Why have we not brought in ther new Manager as promised, because no one will touch us with a barge pole due to this meddling in team affairs.
If it was even remotely true that Mark McGhee was on his way in, I am sure that will now not happen as he is his own man and would not put up with this type of meddling.

Incidentally just to put another spin on this, my guess is that Romanov has another goalkeeper lined up perhaps from Kaunas and so he may well want Basso out anyway so he mucks up the contract discussions himself.

Problem is Basso has a contract until summer 2009 so, unless sold or paid off, he will be here.

Someone else above mentioned Vlad may be deliberately interfering with contracts to clear space for other players. Maybe this is the case, Maybe he will even let the new manager pick which player he wants to replace Basso, Velika et al ;)
16

THE BPRENTICE,

24/04/2008 12:12:35
Negotiations? Negotiations? what's Basso's agent talking about? This story is from an Evening News article yesterday - the more you read it...the funnier it gets:

Hapless youth who tried to rob his local store spared jail

A TEENAGER who was caught out trying to rob his local corner shop when staff recognised his voice has escaped a prison sentence.

Hapless Callum Clark lives just 150 yards from the small store which he tried to raid wearing a mask and holding a knife.

But the 16-year-old's demands for cash failed and when he threatened he would return, the shopkeeper answered: "Is that you, Callum?"

During the attempted robbery in Bilston, Midlothian, Clark told the shopkeeper to empty the till. The shocked worker replied: "Are you kidding?"

Yesterday, at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Clark was handed a two-year probation order and told to serve 150 hours of community service work. The teenager had earlier pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery in July last year.

He went into the shop in Park Avenue wearing a homemade mask, but shopkeeper Alexander Stewart told him to "beat it".

As the would-be thief ran away, he shouted that he would be back – at which point the shopkeeper recognised the youngster's voice.

Gillian Law, defending, told the court that her client was determined to tackle his problems.

But Sheriff Fiona Reith said that she was concerned at the gravity of the crime for someone so young.

....... I wonder if the Vlad (while "negotiating") with Basso's agent, Tomasso Angelini, said "Are you kidding?".

Home made mask? Its just genius.
17

Ackey,

Sunny Leith 24/04/2008 12:12:51
Maybe it's a sign off Vlad actually now recognising how much dross there is at swinecastle and if can't get them to leave on their own will, freeze them out.

Then we will hopefully see a decline in the third world debt you owe by getting rid of more 9 million pound players and a cheaper version of the pipedream that is the supposed new stand.

How the see saw swings on the great edinburgh goalie saga's
18

TheMoth,

Petrie's wallet 24/04/2008 12:12:53
Basso thinks he is too good for the SPL anyway... Bin him. He like many other foreign players coming here thought that he could just coast it up here and still look good, happens all the time and no-matter what his potential, I dont think he is the sort of guy we need around our club just now.
19

Starchief,

24/04/2008 12:13:07
"Basso's current two-year contract is not due to expire until summer 2009 but the club had indicated their intention to extend his stay."

So why drop him? Seems a bit like HoM cutting off their noses...No rush for a new contract. If they think that he doesn't want to sign, then sell the player in the summer (or even as far away as January) as a first teamer, thereby increasing his value.

Look at Wes Brown. It looked like he was leaving Man U but they kept playing him, even though he could have left for free, because Fergie thought it was best for the team. Result: re-negotiation. Player is happy to be a regular. He re-signs. Unlike Brown, HoM still have the option of selling him if negotiations break down.

Why engineer a crisis when there is absolutely no need?
20

Gorgie Forever,

24/04/2008 12:15:40
#13 Vic,

I agree with you to an extent. I have no problem Basso possibly leaving, I think he is far too much of a liability and it is always likely that the owner will influence the contract negotiations so not much scandal there. Also agree that we only wan't guys who really wan't to stay but we don't know what kind of offer he was made. If it is a substantial drop in his wages then the guy is likely to say no, even if he does wan't to remain at the club.Without knowing the specifics of the offer I wouldn't want to judge the guy too harshly.

Also it sets a dangerous precedent if players are dropped during contract negotiations, his agent may be right about it only being early stages.

Its not this particualr player that bothers me as much as the process itself.

Right, so if I've got this right, Basso has a contract for a year and a bit. Club wants to extend it, Basso not happy with terms. Vlad tells Frail not to pick Basso. Frail doesn't pick Basso.

If that is the case then it shows Vlad is still interfering, and reinforces why I won't be happy if SF gets the job. We always suspected that SF wasn't 100% in control, and this seems to prove it. But, as I've been saying for the last 3 and a bit months, who our next permanent manager is will tell us all we need to know.
23

Lenny,

24/04/2008 12:24:09
Hardly news is it. I would be amazed if anyone actually thought that Romanov wasnt intefering with team selection. Why do you think Frail is in charge as apposed to a real manager.

24

GrahamL,

#13 But he will be here next season, he's got a contract. How many times have you heard "I only want to play players who'll be here the season after next"??
It's very early to have started negotiations, and extremely early to take a huff if they break down.

And, the important bit, is that SF - apparently - was told not to pick him. Even if SF had made the decision to drop him, while I wouldn't necessarily agree with it, it would be more reasonable. But he didn't. Not good enough, not by a long shot.

Of course, it was Romanov's people who signed Basso and who want him to sign a new deal so he's to blame for a poor signing, for trying to -re-sign the wrong players AND for influencing team selection. None of which is exactly news.

I actually prefer Basso to Banks in goals... ok in his first few games he looked a little unsure... but all our keepers this season haven't looked their best at times. Kurskis is the worst i've seen for a long time and to be second choice in front of Basso was a joke.

However to drop Basso after 2 games and 2 clean sheets and at a time when he actually looks worthy of the jersey just shows what a hapless bunch of fuc-wits we have running the club.

Romanov your a liar and a cheat, i'm sick of reading about you and your clueless son... you have brought the club down and pushed the debt up.

I do not 'believe' a word that comes out of Tynecastle anymore and will not renew my ST ( which i have had for 18 years ) until your either gone or butt out of the club running altogether... with a man like Cambell Ogilvie at the club, there is no need for your constant interferences.

I am sick to the back teeth of the negativity surrounding our club... my team was a source of escapism for me from a very busy working life... now it causes me more pain... why?

One word... Romanov.

I must say that the only good bit of business that I can see that Romanov has done is selling Gordon for £9m. Yes he is a top class keeper but £9m is about £5m-£6m more that I would have expected for a fairly young Scottish keeper from outside the Old Firm. I have to say he hasn't been outstanding in the Premiership and is far from being considered one of the top 3 or 4 keepers in the league despite still holding the record transfer fee for a British keeper.

Mind you, it's only good business if it goes straight into lowering the debt. Time will tell on that score.

Meanwhile, a decent keeper who is better than the ones we have should be achievable and not that expensive.

This is one of the few things I agree 100% with vlad. If a player refuses to sign a contract extension they should never play for the team again.

It is the players right not to sign and it is a club owners right to sideline those not 100% committed to the future of the team, as long as they pay their wages. Being a good player is not the only criteria for being picked for the first team. Other qualities required are fitness, commitment, team work etc etc and a player who is looking to his next move or protecting himself from injury can’t be 100% committed to his current team.

The agents have massive power in these situations and will try to get as much as they can for their player (Fair enough) but why should we pay over the odds for a player who will be no more than third choice when his current deal expires? And if the discussions are at such an early stage why has he turned to the press so quickly? Remember if you ask hearts fans who they rate as the clubs number one they would say banks and then probably the lad at Queens.

We saw the same thing with Eggert Jonsson, his agent was saying this, that and the other and when they finally signed the player came out and said he always intended staying and he was happy with the way everything was going.

We are also trying to cut the wage bill so maybe a experienced 2nd choice goal is a bit of a luxury and an easy way to reduce a few pounds off the pay bill.

#30 Rambo I understand what you are saying here, however, when the Team Manager makes a call to drop someone from the team that is fine as he has responsibility for the team and subsequently the results so he must have thought is was best for the team.

In this case Frail has been told to drop Basso despite the fact that he may want him in the team, then when the results go wrong it is Frail who will get the heat, not Romanov.

Board interference should be reduced as much as is possible and the Team Coach/Manager should own the responsibility for team affairs.

That said, the story is typical of the Edinburgh Evening News. Negative, negative, negative. Oh and when some positive news comes out of Tynecastle, you will find it buried away somewhere in the sport pages where nobody can see or just totally ignored. That said, I suppose it suits the Edinburgh Evening News agenda.

VR

TELLER OF LIES

Proof of what I have been saying since early January about team matters.
Vlad's statement on January first was total bull5hit.
There is no way on earth that this fabricator of the truth could possibly refrain from being responsible in saying who does and does not play week in week out.
To think that some folk actually believed that Frail had total autonomy over team matters. Gullable or what ?

Why on earth do people think that Vlad has kept Frail on for so long and that SF is favourite to get the managers job. BECAUSE HE PLAYS VLAD'S GAME.

We - Hearts , the fans - and all business matters are nothing more than an expensive pseudo playstation footballing game for VR.

The irony of the matter is that Vlad was instrumental in getting Banks ousted on two or three occassions to allow Kurskis and Basso in. Now he does the same to Basso (full circle) and the toys get chucked out the pram.

Ah well - that's the negative stuff out the road.
The positive side is that Basso might now go - YAHOO -----Just a matter of time until the next calamity when he plays.(oops I forgot - he did actually have a good game)

Mind you - with Vlad playing hard ball - we might get lumbered with Basso yet , for another two or three years.

Let's face it, there's meddling and there's meddling. I know that sounds stupid but, surely, it's important to differentiate between meddling as previously displayed when Vlad was picking the team (and showcasing Lithuanian "talent") and the kind of meddling going on here. I think I would be extremely unhappy at further evidence of the former but I have less of a problem with this kind of influence over contract negotiations.

Vlad has proved that he's pretty astute at the buying and selling aspects of the club's affairs (can you imagine previous administrations getting £9m for Gordon, £1.5 or whatever for Skacel, over £1m for a 30+ year-old Hartley etc.). Okay, he didn't do so well over Webster but maybe he learned something in the process.

Furthermore, we're not told what the request or offer amounted to. If the request was unreasonable, I'm quite pleased it was turned down and if the offer was derisory, who knows whether there's an end-strategy to either reduce wages or, dare I say it, another manager in the background indicating that he doesn't fancy Basso much.

Whatever's going on is certainly not the same as was happening previously and, although it contradicts previously-issued statements on autonomy, it, nevertheless, may be in the interests of the club. If so, it's forgiveable.

OK. So the official line from the Hearts fans round here seems to be "It's OK for Vlad to interfere in team selection, as long as he forces Frail to drop the players we don't want in the team."
Maybe when everyones renewing their season tickets they can send in a chosen first XI. That way Vlad can make sure the team he forces SF to pick is the same as the one the fans want, then everyone will be happy...?

I think the main point to consider / worry about is that they were going to resign a guy most Hearts fans see as a liability, and are only shifting him on due to stalling at the negotiating table.

The "vision" of the coaching staff is what I find most baffling.

Starchief,

But he's nowhere near the end of his contract. He probably has little re-sale value. Why make such trouble? Never mind if he's quality or not, HoM wanted him. No need to say sign now or you're dropped with over a year of his contract left. It just seems crazy.

#79 now now, Mr SarkyPants....the official line is that Vlad is not one for being bullied by agents.

Reading further quotes from the agent in a different paper, he is suggesting Basso was promised he would be number one choice.

Thats as may be but he failed to grasp that opportunity (literally) so has to prove himself all over again. Until then, Banksy is #1.

Its just typical agent nonsesne, stirring it up to get a better deal or a move and whilst I don;t approve of Vlad interfering, he has every right to drop Basso when he is dispute with the club.

The source of this story- Basso's agent speaks exclusively to Banderson.
IF TRUE!!! - then Basso's agent is either a bliterhing idiot (as he effectively ended Basso's career at Tynie) or he has twisted facts to engineer an early exit for another club.
I think that if this was happening at ER, the headline in the EEN would be: "Petrie stands firm and boots out player after unreasonable contract demands."

After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather & Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up! and fired a few wild shots from a target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, and several customers also drew their guns and fired. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt.

fact is he shouldnt be first choice anyway...banks is easily!!

vlad does need to stop interfering with the 11 that play. i have no problem with him selecting the players we buy etc...every club outsid ethe uk operates like that but we need a manager to pick the best 11 for a saturday.

for me there are far too many players at hearts these days saying i want more money, i deserve more, if i don't play i'll leave etc i mean clum saying if i don't get a game i'll leave...total joke....is that a promise calum!?

again basso isn't first choice so if he doesnt want to sign i for one wont care a jot...dont rate him that highly...made some good saves...made a few howlers...not reliable enough.....and banksy swings on the bar!!

thanks to BPrentice for the great robbery article. best thing i've read on this forum so far...

"basso, is that you?"....beat it"

I think that some people have been slightly unfair on basso.

He was superb @ celtic park in the league cup win. The defense solidified around him in that game. The confidence swept through the team as the game went on primarily because they were solid at the back and never looked like conceeding a goal.

He was probably man of the match @ easter rd a few days earlier. Some of his stops, positioning and blocks were text book in their execution.

He got dropped on the 1st of december because he fumbled a hartley free kick from inches outside the box. In the years he was at hearts quite a few opposition goalkeepers couldn't handle his free kicks yet never got the same pilloring. You don't see celtic fans screaming for the rolly-polly goalie (boric) to be dropped because Hartley made him look foolish from a dead ball situation!

I wasn't at the killie game but the guy won us a point.

If his agent wants to play stupid games with vlad either in private or via the press there will only be one winner- and rightly so.

When john robertson was having a contract dispute with hearts Mercer went live on bbc scotland news and said he didn't care who he (robertson) played for, it won't be hearts. Robertson went to newcastle and then returned when he saw sence.

And that was/ is hearts record goal scorer.

As I recall it, Basso was bought in a bit of a panic when CG left the club. I've always thought he was a reasonable enough 'keeper but a bit prone to the odd gaff or two.

Now, we have two young keepers we could develop further with McDonald in particular looking like an excellent prospect. And am I not right in thinking that Shaggy is on record a few weeks ago as saying he wanted to bring in a new 'keeper?

Yet despite all of that, and the club's desire to REDUCE it's wage bill, Basso's agent comes looking for a better deal? I think he's seen the end of the road for his man at Tynie and is just trying to manufacture an early exit for him.

#86 Prof - Totally agree with your last point.

It is half a story, as many have said. If the agent began proceedings by stating his player wants double his current pay with duration of 4 years. Hearts could have decided his worth is less and said we’ll give him the same money he’s on for two more years. Agent say’s no, hearts say OK that’s all we’re prepared to stretch to for a player of this standard; the balls in your court. Agent replies that it is not a suitable offer and that his player won’t sign and will leave at the end of the current deal, club replies ‘OK he’s no longer in our plans’.

If you worked for a big company RBS, HBOS, IBM etc, etc and you went in and said to your boss I want my salary increased, I’ve looked around and I recon I can do better elsewhere. Your boss would weight up your value to the company, your skill sets, considers how easy/hard it will be to replace you and will then say yes or no. If he says no and you decide to leave do you think the company would continue sending you on training courses whilst you work your notice? NO. Lots of things would change and quickly. Some high level employees even get sent home on ‘Gardening’ leave to avoid potentially damaging situations.

In my opinion the same should apply in football.

As it happens I think he’s an OK number 2 and has generally proven himself to be an able goalie. But the standard of the player shouldn’t effect how contracts are dealt with. The club should have a set policy, designed to get the most out of the best players on the books, at the best price for the club and it should be applied evenly throughout the club. The contract value and duration may change but the way they do business should be constant, then all the players know where they stand and what to expect.

#91 "CEO" is just a bogus title at Hearts. We all know that the (largely) absentee majority shareholder who has no official role at the club takes every decision. So, I'd say Ogilvy's role is to look and sound important while in reality he probably males the teas for the Directors (he isn't one). I'm sure he is well paid for being a Vlad puppet and he was unemployed and cares nothing for Hearts so what the heck?
85

GrahamL,

24/04/2008 15:22:29
I mean, you're all right that if Basso didn't want to play for Hearts and was leaving in June then Frail would be well within his rights not to play him.

1. Basso wants to play for Hearts.
2. Basso is contracted til 2009.
3. Vlad is deciding Basso shouldn't play.

On the basis of a stalled contract negotiation, which has been started at least 6 months before it needs to be, for the club owner to step in and tell the manager (who apparently has compelte autonomy) not to pick the player just seems a little odd to me.
But as JT1874 says, maybe I'm young and niave and just don't remember when other clubs did the same thing.

For once I don`t agree with the Newcastle Jambo.I think Basso is a fair keper and will be a loss.Right away though it`s the same old story.Nothing will change there till this outfit is removed,Manager,no way. There`s not anyone worth their salt would want to come to this disfunctional club of ours.Wise up guys give them the boycot now.

*96* Definately a starter but if you mind he scored two up in Inverness so maybe he can do the same again. Roscoe Banderson at his best the usual drivel and negativity on normal occurances with every club side in the world. Couldn't care if he left as has lot to prove but he does look a good goalkeeper and a backup to a first choice keeper next season would be ok. Would rather the manager, when appointed assess him and decide wether he is worth keeping or not but a nothing story again from this fudgecake reporter.

Ho hum, it's pretty common for players to be dropped when contract disputes break down, and happens at most clubs. Kevin Thomson being stripped of the captaincy anyone?

Romanov has a well-documented dislike of agents, which is one thing I support him on. They stir things up, as this story proves.
