VLADIMIR ROMANOV has managed one solitary appearance at Tynecastle since the turn of the year. Likewise Juho Makela. In fact, the Finnish striker has graced the hallowed ground just once more than his Russian paymaster all season, a perfect indictment of his restricted first-team opportunities.
With Hearts coaching staff privately confessing doubts over his capabilities, Makela is resolved to prove them wrong. Last week he returned to the comparative backwaters of Finland's Veikkausliiga on a three-month loan with HJK Helsinki, after which
he intends to hit the ground running at Hearts' pre-season training camp in Germany.

Far from losing conviction, the 24-year-old is still driven to succeed in Edinburgh. Supporters have criticised Romanov for a lack of appearances in Scotland this season, but the majority shareholder at least made the choice to stay away by himself. Makela couldn't.

His statistics confirm an all-too-familiar pattern: when matchday squads are announced at Riccarton each week, he can count on his name being off the list.

Two years and three months with Hearts has brought just 19 first-team outings for a player who cost the club £500,000. These include three starts in which he has scored four goals, a hint of the potential which as yet remains unfulfilled. In a revealing Evening News interview, Makela explained his emotions. "I have been frustrated because at times the team has not played well and has been lacking a goalscorer or other qualities that I have. I know I could help the team, but I haven't been given the chance. That has been frustrating. I've been waiting a long time," he said.

"I don't think I played too bad against St Mirren in the game before I left. It was my first match for six months because I was not in favour. I want to make sure I make an impact with Hearts next season by coming back ready with good confidence and fitness."

Makela's situation might be considered unfair, particularly in light of his goalscoring prowess when starting games for Hearts. "I'll leave people to make their own conclusions about that," he added. "I didn't play for six months, that's not what you would think should happen. I still want to play for Hearts."

His can also point to 33 goals in 41 games for HJK before defecting to Scotland in January 2006. Re-enacting a portion of that prosperity was uppermost in the player's mind when agreeing the temporary move back home last week. Makela's £4000-a-week, three-and-a-half-year Hearts contract expires next summer, denoting next season as one of the most important of his career.

"The purpose is to play first-team football with HJK, get my self-confidence back and score goals. I feel really good, we have a lot of games coming up and I know I'll be playing. It's a good challenge for me," he said.

"It's not easy to come back – everybody has high expectations. There is always pressure. Everybody asked me when I came back if I felt pressure because people are expecting a lot from me. Pressure makes you work hard and I like that situation. It makes me feel like I'm alive.

"My contract continues with Hearts. Nothing has been agreed except that I am here until the pre-season camp in Germany. That was the purpose, that I rejoin the squad for pre-season training and that's my intention. I've told people here it's not time to discuss what happens in three months because I'm only just back in Finland.

"Everybody has said I have a point to prove, but I have always proved I can play in Scotland when given the chance. For my physical condition, I need to play. I haven't been playing a lot in recent seasons and I really need competitive football and some goals. I need to be confident, match fit and sharp to be fully ready for next season."

The Evening News revealed last week that HJK coach Antti Muurinen hopes to entice Makela back to Finland permanently. Perhaps with this in mind, the striker was handed the No.9 shirt for the new campaign and repaid some of the faith with a debut goal in Monday's season-opening victory over IFK Mariehamn.

"It's important to get a good start, especially with the loan deal being quite short," he said. "I knew I had to be ready from the beginning. I've started well and a goal in the first match helps a lot. I only trained twice with the team before the match, but the result and scoring a goal has made me really happy."

A player who feeds on goals, Makela felt somewhat malnourished at Hearts. The question is, will he be starved of action when he returns?

Well, there you go Banderson. Continuing to try and stir up anti-Romanov nonesense.

You even admit yourself "With Hearts coaching staff privately confessing doubts over his capabilities", but that doesn't stop you. Makela is garbage, but why should that get in the way of your usual rantings.

Hwo can a guy who's started 3 matches and scored 4 goals be crap?

looke at Nade, Elliot, Mole, Beniuseless. Now there utter crap but they keep getting chance after chance.

I still think Frail just doesnt like him.

Whether he is good or 'crappage' (as some would say) there were plenty of times when our other strikers were playing terribly or unfit. That is when Makela atleast deserved a shot on the bench. Whenever he has been called upon he has been fit, ready and willing (and quite often scored) which is a lot more than can be said about some of our other players.

I doubt we will see him back but as a guy who kept his head down, kept playing in the reserves and kept his mouth shut with growing frustration, I wish him well.

#2- your correct.

How can Nade, Elliot, Mole, Beniuseless get games for the hearts first team and Makela doesn't get a look in. Lets face it he can't be worse than those players.

The problem for the player is that he could score 20+ goals in finland this summer, come back to hearts and be in the same situation. He won't get a transfer as vlad will want a stupid transfer fee which over values the player and no club in their right mind would pay. This has already happended to Tall and Goncalves a few times this season. That means hearts will have to stump up £4k a week until June 2009.

At the beginning of the season Basel wanted to extend his loan but hearts refused- why? Its cost £208,000 for his basic salary, money that could have been used elsewhere.

Ask anyone who attends reserve games about Makela, ask them whether he should be playing up front for the JT's

ValdasTheMan,

So why did Vlad pay £500K plus £4K a week for 3.5 years, which totals £1.25M on a player and never give him a chance! As a pure business decision, this is lunacy.

Totally agree with #2, we have no decent forwards at the moment which hopefully will be rectified in the summer. Now was the chance to give him a run of games and see what he is like?

I hope back Makela~

WE ARE WE ARE WE ARE THE HEARTS,

This guy has been marginalised by Frail. He is actually a very good finisher unlike most of the other strikers we have.

Time will tell.

Johnny Jambo,

I have always said Hearts have some good players, it is the management of the club which is the problem and because of that we do not get the best out of some of those players.
When Burley left Skacel was poor for a time, Bednar was poor for a time and there are more, so get a Management Team in that values the players and treats them properly and we shall see the benefit.

really don't see how this is "anti Romanov"

The Makela situation is ridiculous and he has remained dignified throughout his time at Hearts.

Blaming Banderson for having an agenda and therefore pretending everything is fine at Hearts is the kind of tolerance that Romanov has long stopped deserving.

Makela scored against Barcelona and 4 goals in 3 starts ain't bad at all - is this really worse than some of the clowns mentioned by previous posters?

WHY CAN'T HE GET A GAME? WHY HAS NOBODY IN THE PRESS PUT THIS TO FRAIL?
13

Chas Niceass,

02/05/2008 14:07:04
Why did they play him (Makela) on the right wing, when he is clearly a hitman?

Altogether now:

and so on.

Edinburgh's Big Team,

EH11 02/05/2008 14:26:59
I'm not convinced by Makela's alround game but agree he has not had a run and therefore its unfair to judge him.....he knows where the goal is tho so should've been brought into the 1st team when Velicka left! Like so many hearts players, it must be difficult when you get maybe two games max before rotation..then the fans start to get on your back and the cycle continues

THE BPRENTICE,

Banderson, you're months too late to put in you Makela scoops...everybody is past caring about him - in fact whetehr its his fault or not - he's in the Pinilla category of mooching from the club and giving nothing back. I suspect that contract negotiations went badly wrong and he was sent to the Gulag ever since...now that his contract is coming to an end he wants a bit of publicity. I don't know what chesney did to get back into Vlad's selection fold - but maybe Makela could have done the same to get a game and if he did...maybe he would have been playing instead of Elliot....(tongue in cheek) I blame Makela for us bieng in the bottom six - the bread-head that he is!!

£4000 per week for Makela but not playing him? I really hope Vlad is money laundering - otherwise Vlad is off his bloody chump. That £4000 could have been spent on coaching or scouting good young players.
17

what a chancer,

the truth and the whole truth 02/05/2008 16:45:18
who enticed vlad to buy these players, the talent scout fair fleeced the piggy bank,i wonder what his pay check was or was it vlad himself that done all this talent spotting.
18

busbyfh,

02/05/2008 16:50:57
Always said - Give Makela a run - Even just 5 games .
If he is proven to be poor then at least we will have seen it.He seems the kind of player that runs about not doing that much but pops up to score goals ....something/someone we do not have.

PLAY MAKELA.
19

what a chancer,

why not 02/05/2008 16:56:54
nothing to lose ,only a point to prove but with so many big earners waiting to skin the cat and crying off at the first excuse they could find no wonder others became disillusioned.

Wahoo Makela is nowhere near good enough. I have seen him in reserve games and at any and every time he's been in the first team squad.
Robbie Neilson looks like a Brazilian star next to him.
Good luck to him in his time away from HMFC.
As victorian says..we need better players.
