Published Date: 22 May 2008
MARK McGHEE has met Vladimir Romanov and been formally interviewed for the position of Hearts manager, the Evening News can reveal.
The Motherwell manager has a number of clubs seeking to lure him away from Fir Park after guiding the club into Europe, however Tynecastle would be his first-choice destination if he can attain certain assurances from Romanov.

Despite interest from Scotland, England and the continent, McGhee is keen to take control of Hearts due to their potential to be the SPL's unrivalled third force. He has discussed a potential salary in the region of £375,000 a year with Romanov for the position but also wants a clause inserted in his contract stating that he alone will pick the team.

Romanov has yet to agree to that demand as well as certain others but talks have been positive and remain ongoing. Representatives of Ukio Bankas Investment Group, including financial expert Mindaugas Nikolicius, who is currently based at Tynecastle, have also been involved in the discussions.

McGhee still has a year remaining on his contract as Motherwell manager and Hearts would therefore be liable to pay compensation should he leave. However, no appointment is imminent at this stage with further discussions likely over the coming weeks once McGhee returns from holiday. Tonight's meeting with Hibs is likely to be his final match in charge of Motherwell.

Scott Leitch, a former Tynecastle player, would move with McGhee as his assistant, which would place question marks over the position of Stephen Frail. Currently interim manager, Frail privately has doubts regarding his future having been in sole charge since January.

John Boyle, the Motherwell chairman, is aware of Hearts' interest in McGhee but no official approaches have been made to date.

"There will be speculation because we've done well this season," said Boyle. "Any approach would have to be made through Motherwell. That's the way it's done in Scotland. These things have to be done in the proper manner."

Asked if he and McGhee would consider moving to Hearts, Leitch said: "You have to consider every option if someone wants to speak to you. It's just like being a player. You have to have the decency to talk to someone if they ask to talk to you. We have a game against Hibs and the manager and myself are focused on that. After that who knows what will happen?"

Vladimir will give say no clause with McGhee to pick team. He is ruler and pays money to workers so he is boss.

Al the stories of this being a done deal seem to be way off the mark if the EEN is to be believed.

Getting the assurances he wants will be the stumbling block so I guess we will not see McGhee at Tynecastle.

Okay now this is a good start.

Lets all keep our heads here today though... oops too late bitter Den the Hibee has already peaked.

McGhee would be a welcome apointment as far as I'm concerned but not my first choice. Scot Leitch knows the club well and will be welcomed on his return too.

IF McGhee gets the necessary assurances then great but this is where we will see Vlad's true intentions and I hope that he will be given a better crack at the whip than Burley was.

If Vlad gives him official assurance of not interfering could he not also pen a gagging clause in to it and sack him for something bogus if he does not bend to his will?

I think we need a bit of a compromise here... We need to raise money to service the debt I assume so there should be room for good players with a sell-on potential as well as them being there for what they bring to the team... This means rubbish like Ivaskevicius who fit into neither category should be given short shrift...

I await action and not words but it is nice to hear something that feels feasible and potentialy positive... Don't blow it again this time Vlad... PLEASE!!!

CUE A SHOWER OF P155 FROM THE USUALL SUSPECTS!

Despite all the ill-informed garbage from many a plonker we now have Davies and McGhee both stating their interest in the Job.

We are still some way off from netting our man it would seem but it certainly contradicts a few muppets who told us with real arrogance and mis-place (Weegie media duped) ignorance that no self respecting manager would want the Hearts job.

It would appear that not everyone is 'Laughing at the Jambos' after all and that we are not the one 'SPL Team' that is not a decent prospect eh Riley?... T**t

McGhee and Davies can see the potential at Hearts... Lets hope Vlad can open his eyes and see the potential of one of these two men in return.

Money talks for McGhee, obviously a man of no principles, who in their right mind would want to work for Vlad the meglomaniac, motivated by greed if he does go rather than furthering his career, but then again he is a bit of a pr1ck and an ugly one at that, so him and the Jambo's will be well suited.

I take your point, fair enough but for the 10 games Burley was at the helm 'Scotland's unrivaled third force' is exactly what we would have been.

Yes the time since has been a disaster due to Vlad's incompetence and egobut... Is this not what we were all wanting? I said above that it will take actions and not words to win me over but likewise I will not just assume that EVERYTHING he says is a lie... I will wait in hope more than expectation but just like with everything else I will let him actually blow it again before I pillory him for making the moves we have identified as needed for tw years now.
24

Basically its all down to Vlad as it has been for 3 years and more.
Either he wants a good team or not.
Hearts are easily challengers to the gruesome twosome when he does and bottom 6 dross when he doesn't.
One man can make the difference, do us a favour Vladimir and yourself and be the good guy. Dont let ego and the desire to control every human being in your circumference ruin a very good opprutunity for some very loyal people and more importantly to you, yourself.

#18. No, maybe we will only get to 2nd in the league with Romanov in charge. Were you one of the "fans" who was trying to get Mercer out at the end of the 1982 season?

I think it is worth pointing out that if you have the 3rd biggest support and the 3rd best overall league record, then maybe it is OK to be described as the 3rd force. Outside Rangers and Celtic we have finished in the top 3 more than any other club.

The Motherwell Chairman John Boyle has stated that he has had no approach from Hearts. Does that mean that Hearts have interviewed McGhee without seeking Motherwell's permission? All seems a bit premature and I sincerely wonder about the EEN's sources on this one.

Cheers Vic'... Some perspective will be needed here today but... (Hate myself for agreeing with the wee trumpet)... Den is... (cough)... ahem... correct in mentioning that there is no statement quoted from McGhee.

I can only assume that he has a source who has filled him in... A friend of mine who knows a fair few people close to the club told me on Sunday that McGhee had told the well players he was joining Hearts.

Sorry of already posted.....

Would seem Banderson is jumping the gun again or at least twisting the story! If you look on the BBC website it states that the conversation with Leitch started with him saying that nobody had spoken with them re the job at Hearts. The next paragraph is the one Banderson has used in that they would speak to anyone as it's the way it is done..... Shame on you Banderson!!!
29

Chas Niceass,

#28 The denials have been weak to say the least.
I'll believe it when it happens but I dont think there is any doubt now they have spoken. Its naive to think otherwise.
Nobody will want to admit it for fear of annoying the fans or any players with itchy feet.
Its not to say though McGhee will become manager but its definitely in the making, agreement of a contract and then worse still as a Jambo waiting for the Burley scenario to unfold constantly are the pitfalls.

Romanov has a choice...bow to the judgement of the manager he appoints in terms ofselection or he will never get a manager with a good track record.

McGee will have other offers to consider, and so will other managers with his track record.

Because of past grievances between hearts' managers and Romanov, there isn't a prayer that anyone will come without cast iron guarantess about player selection.

If Romanov doesn't give way, Hearts will be doomed to a procession of mediocrity.

I agree but perhaps (big perhaps here) Barry has actually been doing his job and getting some info from a source at a club who pucker up tighter than a ducks 4rse when it comes to talking to the press.

These are pretty ostentatious claims like Mark's preferences in Hearts over other clubs etc but to be honest I think Bazza would be more likely to get a bit of scraps thrown to him before the iron curtain would lift for the BBC after the slagging they have given us and Vlad for two and a bit years.

Or yes it could be speculative journalism at it's worst... Hope not or banderson will have lost whatever credibility he had.

If the contract terms are watertight as regards team selection, there won't be another burley scenario.

McGee will tell Romanov where to go if he tries to interfere, and if Romanov tries to pull strokes, McGee will have a claim for breach of contract.
For that reason, McGee should include in the contract a punitive damages clause in the event that Romanov tries to undermine his freedom to select the team.

#28 I think you're on the money JT&T.

My guess is that banderson spent all night trying to find Stevie Frail - after coming up empty - he thought he'd pull out a carrot dangler of a 'mcghee keen on the hearts job' article instead.

The only thing that either vindicates the mighty bando is:

He has discussed a potential salary in the region of £375,000 a year with Romanov for the position but also wants a clause inserted in his contract stating that he alone will pick the team.

.....this is quite specific and is either walter mitty-esque OR is borne out of having his finger on the pulse?

You've heard of The Men from Texas - well, here come the Men from Faxes.

This is what keeps me thinking there is some fire... It all seems very 'specific', hope his source is good.

The BBC thing is not really that convincing either way for me as Vlad has a deep-rooted dislike of them and I can't see him wanting them to get any kind of exclusive regarding his business dealings... Edinburgh based paper... wee accidental leak?... Perhaps.

I will as they say wait for the pudding (I've ordered a proof filling) but after the rumour I heard at the weekend and now these 'specifics' this is the first bit of managerial news/rumours that i am a little moved by so far.

Interesting...

I said a while back "I'd believe it when I see it" but it does seem there is something in the offing for the Hearts faithful here.

Perhaps he's not a world beating manager but at least he IS a manger who has done pretty well since taking over at Motherwell.

Still as someone said earlier Id only really believe it when its offically announced and hes agreed terms.

One bit of the story that intrigued me was the fact that no more wold be done on it until McGhee returned from his jollies, it would be interesting to see what this date was and how it relates to ST renewal deadline day at Hearts. Not being cynical ar nowt guys just with previous announcments of this nature Hearts fans have been led up the garden path before, It is possible that Vlads up to his old tricks again....

As I said believe it when it actually happens but at least for you guys its something positive on the face of it.

#39

Do you honestly think breach of contract or puniative damages would stop a man such as Romanov? If he wanted to interfere and these clauses existed hed just do it anyway going by his track record and then fight McGhee or whoever in court.

There is a bit of a contridiction in appointing a manager like McGhee who has control over team selection. The business plan of showcasing E European talent does not work (or is restricted by the managers selection). Will Vlad throw away this potential(?) income stream? What does he replace it with?
It would be very good news for Hearts fans if he goes there. Not so good news for the Hearts accountants!

Notice there's no comment quoted from McGhee himself - I spoke to Leitch at the weekend he said then that the Hearts stories are all BS! McGhee WAS given an offer way back i.e. a discussion on his potential salary and there hasn't been any further contact because a) McGhee said he wasn't even thinking of anything until the end of the season and b) Romanov had to be told the "conditions" McGhee had attached. Also - you're not forgetting the Celtic factor I hope = according to Chris McCart's son (McCart is now at Celtic) if he wins the League Strachan has said he will probably quit and there's no way McGhee will do anything until that's sorted 'cause he wants Celtic. Banderson is just regurgitating the story in the Glasgow papers of yesterday and he hasn't included the bits where McGhee and Leitch and Motherwell "rubbished" (quote from McGhee in the papers in this are) these reports linking him to Hearts - check the Daily Record e.g website or better still The Glasgow Herald (for whom McGhee sometimes does columns) - It's BS!

Not good enough. What would most of us moan about ?

Vlad might sign a manager with his "stock" at a high.

Vlad might keep a promise to us fans.

Vlad might keep his nose out of team matters.

Vlad might have a business that is a success story.

Vlad might put many people's noses back in joint in one fell swoop.

Hell - It sounds good...........IF it happens.(I have everything crossed)

It is still hypothetical , but McGhee came to Motherwell and had Leitch "given" to him as his assistant - I am sure if he was "given" Stevie Frail he would accept a new partner in crime. MM accepted being given a new man the last time (No disrespect to Scott Leitch-ex Jambo)so why not now.

If the next manager leaves after 10 games, this would make it clear to all Hearts fans that he would never stop interfering with the squad.

Anyway, I try to remain optimistic that McGhee will come with the required clauses in his contract. And Romanov can treat himself to the latest version of Championship Manager!!

McGhee you HAVE to pre-agree this for your own sanity and for Hearts sake:

You have sole authority to pick team. No interferance from anyone.

No special treatment for Lithuanian players (this will mean almost all are sent packing).

BIG penalty payment if Moronov breaks these contract terms.

If you cant get this from Moronov you are wasting your time.

Things that are obvious....

By taking a few weeks - MM is waiting to find out first whether he will be offered the Celtic job.(Understandable as we know we would be second choice to the King Edward howkers)

Stevie Frail SHOULD be kept on in a decent capacity....Remember Vlad does not discard many folk that have been loyal to him.He might move them around , but......

This article will now get some sort of response within 24 hours from MM.One way or another.

If this was a false article "leaked" from Hearts - a total denial by MM would make BAnderson or Vlad look damn stupid. I believe BAnderson, though how can MM have been interviwed by Vlad yet Boyle knows nothing.Either Boyle is a liar or the word "tapping" comes into play.

"Despite interest from Scotland, England and the continent, McGhee is keen to take control of Hearts due to their potential to be the SPL's unrivalled third force."

What is it about this country that has people settle on being nearly the best? I've said for years that the Old Firm win everything in sight because the other teams don't have the right mindset. The only time I've really seen anyone going up against the OF without an inferiority complex was when Alex Ferguson was managing the Dons. If Romanov has the money we are told he has then why are Jambos content only to be the third force not first. I'm talking in terms of onfield here incidentally not in terms of fan base. There is the potential for someone to take on and beat the OF regularly, I just wish someone would.

Incidentally, only my personal opinion but I don't think McGhee will take the job.

#137, JT&T, yep Hearts blew it big time when Burley "left". I'm convinced that side could and would have gone on to win the title. As for Hibs, it sticks in my throat to say it but nothing changes. It's been the same for as long as I can remember. A list of players who have been sold over the years thereby robbing us of seeing a team live up to its potential is almost endless. I suppose I've become cynical in that regard now and just 'expect' that anyone who shows talent and is worth a shilling or two will be sold! Doesn't detract from watching them though, there's always the (perhaps forlorn) hope that things might change. Mind you I've seen a few Hearts players disappear into the wild blue yonder too. Who remembers Arthur Mann? One of the classiest full backs I ever saw. IIRC he went to Man. City

I can't believe Mark McGhee could be so stupid / naive to think that even with the "special" clause in his contract that he will have carte blanche. The very fact it needs to be suggested in the 1st place + the trail of ex-managers in recent years should be more than enough to convince him not to join Hearts.

That said his loyalty to certain clubs down south has been non-existant so perhaps no surprise. If I was a Well fan I'd be really f'd off.

Would love to see him replace Calderwood at Pittodrie though. So stay at Well, Dingus, enjoy some UEFA cup football with them, then come to Aberdeen when Calderwood's luck runs out later next season.

I think you're missing the point here. If McGhee takes on the Hearts job with assurances regarding team selection then he is putting himself in a very strong position. If he is unfairly dimissed by Vlad he would be entitled to have his contract paid up. If there's a repeat of the Burley incident and he is sacked after 2 or 3 months, he'd basically net £1million + for a few weeks work. In my book that's very clever. Remember he's probably getting paid a pittance at M'Well.

Anyway I hope he gets the job. As soon as it's confirmed I'll be ready to renew my season ticket

Clearly I am not referring to you, or some of the better Hibs fans.

Hypocrisy in that certain supporters, and we all know who they are, have been spouting drivel over the past few days/weeks ridiculing any article that mention Hearts, even to the extent of posting insults just for the sake of it.

Put in a headline, insults follow. When McGhee's name was mentioned, the usual guff followed, now Banderson reports that McGhee COULD be our manager, certain posters have (wouldn't say they are all Hibbys because you can't tell) resorted to the usual abuse, not noticing they are contradicting their previous 'contributions'

#164 - Nah, I'm not missing the point. I honestly don't think McGhee has been disloyal for financial gain in the past but has tried to move to a club he perceives as having potential for success. It's just that his choice has been very questionable (eg Wolves)& has then had to down scale to prove himself again. Yea, he could line his pocket with a short stint at Hearts but I'm sure he wants the success. He'd be wise to bide his time at Well and not grab the Hearts job.

Up to now it's been thought of as complete nonsense by most Hibbees, self included. However I still can't see McGhee taking the job. I've no doubt he will have consulted Burley and possibly even Rix, neither of whom are likely to give the job a glowing reference. He may also have it in the back of his mind that if he did take the job and end up getting sacked that the previous two mentioned will have told him how long they had to wait for compensation.

you can see the reports, "7000 travelled to the gave and after 90 of singing bile filled songs then the fighting started" 6995 arrested but it was the "minority" after all so they will escape any sort of punishment.

That's why it was Hibs that were invited to take part in the first World Club Championships in the 1950s and the first European Cup in 1956. Back then the only Rangers the rest of the world had heard of came from Texas.

Rangers as far as I know hold the accolade of being the only professional team in Scotland to have a player banned sine die. Just in case you don't know what that means, it means forever.

What you seem to forget is that Hibs and Hearts are no different. Neither of us can afford to spend big money on wages or transfers. The only difference is that Hearts are happy to go further into debt to try and chase this 'big team' dream. Likewise, the debt doesnt seem to be of any concern to Hearts fans either.

re Hibs having no debt, regardless of what some may say this is simply not true. Hibs DO still have debt. The money from transfers went on the training ground and the debt, i.e reducing bank repayments. Basically Hibs have spent the last few years building an infastructure which will set the club up for years to come. Frustrating for sure, but in the current financial climate it is a move I am happy with.

I can feel it brewing already, if McGhee gets the job all the 'Big Team' rubbish is going to start up again and Hearts fans will be intolerable again. Personally I think he is a very good manager but he is going to have to spend money that Hearts simply dont have to improve that team. I guess the Hearts fans wont be bothered if the debt is 46M next year though.

#271 "I can feel it brewing already, if McGhee gets the job all the 'Big Team' rubbish is going to start up again and Hearts fans will be intolerable again. "

What like Hibs fans going on, and on, and on and... you get the idea... about flair football, conveyor belt of young players, best run team in the world, leith san siro, no debt, sure to finish third this year, Benji guaranteed to score 20 goals this season, before being forced to scarf down huge slices of humble pies this season.

Football fans are all the same. Only Hibs fans seem to think they are the special and somehow different. Fact is, Hibs fans rarely have anything to crow about, but when they do - boy do we hear all about it.

If football fans can't get excited about getting a new manager like MM, or by having money pumped into the team like a couple of years ago and blasting to the top of the league, there's really no point being a football fan. The belief your team will do something one day is all that keeps most people going. The Scotland national team is a great example. Or are Tartan Army fans all mugs too for continuing to support a team with very little hope of doing anything run by a bunch of incompetent clowns like the SFA.

I think people will be bothered if the debt is 46 million next year. The facility was for 40 million on the debt, before the stadium plans were announced. With the high earners gone and the sale of Gordon many will be expecting a big reduction in debt next year to something between 20 - 25 million mark I suspect. Now if McGhee puts a winning team on the park like burley I suspect the fans will not give two hoots about the level of debt assuming it is below the 40 Million mark, which I think it will be, but not as low as some are predicting.

Taken slightly out of context mate.

I do believe that Hearts will have to spend to improve the squad. However, my 'jibe' about £46M was in a different paragraph and was more meant toungue in cheek. I dont actually think you will be in that debt next season.

Re McGhee spending at % of turnover, I'm not sure what this would actually be. Seeing as the crowds at EasterRoad and Tynecastle differ by about 1K then surely that figure would be very similar? I would imagine (although I dont know) that Hearts are likely to spend more than their % turnover. But regardless, no I'm still not convinced they would finish 3rd.

I dont doubt you make more money through games live etc but I would imagine Hibs do better on match day inside the ground as we have far more Corporate Facilities.

#288 Growing up, the derby only ever mattered to me in the sense that it was a derby. In terms of football, I saw Dundee Utd and Aberdeen as more important games. A certain generation of Jambos grew up during a time when getting beaten by Hibs was quite an unusual occurrance. When McLeaish (I think) halted our massive unbeaten derby run, I experienced genuine feelings of shock. It's normal that a period of overwhelming dominance should lead to feelings of superiority. We earned it. All Hibs have to do is have more season like this and the positions will be switched. Hearts earned their bragging rights. Hibs seem to feel they don't have to.

Will Hearts be MM first choice if WGS walks away from the tic?

Has anyone sought permission from Motherwell to speak to MM.

Great to see the weeteam muppets getting their wishful thinking comments in?! If McGhee does come to tynie then it will be a big positive move for Hearts. It will show that Romanov will be keeping his nose out plus McGhee will get a budget for players. Was McGhee not named Championship manager of the year not so long ago? maybe the anxious weeteamers could tell us that one?? He has done very well at Motherwell though and you could see him bringing the best from Fir Park. Oh and managers are free to speak to anybody which is a different rule for players. I hope he gets shot of the deadwood soon if he comes maybe punting it off to the weeteam as a few of their players seem to want to leave!!One good season in a blue moon makes Hibs the official weeteam of Edinburgh!!

Wee question for weeteamers, when was the last time you had bigger average crowds than Hearts or had a waiting list for season tickets?? Maybe you'd like to tell us as well the last time you filled your ground more than 36 times in a row (that's laughable as you can't even do it twice!) You lot really are Edinburgh's weeteam and one half decent season only fools eejits like weeteamers are!!

#324 Evening VI

Thanks for that mate.Saves me ploughing through all the posts.I see a splattering of red as i scrolled down here so i asume the the hospital is having an open day again.

I am still not convinced by the McGhee story. It is not how Vlad normally does business.
A new manager is on the way though, that is a FACT.

Yeah, agreed with most of that VI.The only thing is the quick conclusion part of your post.Oor Vlad is not renowned for going with the public vote and getting his finger out.I think we could have a long summer ahead reading through countless rumours and speculation.

Pure football on show.
And not forgetting the vast majority of them are so obsessed with us that they couldnt pass up the chance to see our maybe new guvnor.
Some of them are so obsessed with us that they actually take on a new personality for months at a time (18 to be precise) just so they can mingle in our company.

Nah mate, legoland will be heaving tonight.

Well Guys we cant really complain about the hobos mocking us. We must bow down and congratulate hibs on a truly wonderful season sixth place in the league is surely way above their wildest dreams. They are so right to mock us and Vlad after all what football fan would want to win the league and be successful in europe. Aiming high only got us second place and champions league qualifiers. Ahh but they have the goals of that all real footie fans dream about. no debt and attracticve looking balance sheet and an opportunity to debate which one of their youth products performed best for the OF. maybe we should take a leaf out of their book and aim for medoicrity and accept our place as a feeder club for the old firm

For once the Express looks like they have researched a football story, instead of the usual drivvle they produce.

Here's hoping it's not the usual nonsense from them and this is factual.

Already looking forward to next season now!

#357 - A lot of contradictions here amongst the press

Daily Express - "Romanov made his first move several weeks ago but was knocked back by McGhee initially but has now agreed a mind-blowing £8,000-a-week deal behind the scenes and has told his new man he won’t interfere in first-team matters.

The Jambos owner expects McGhee to do a similar job as he did at Motherwell, by turning the Fir Park side into Scotland’s third force, will ask for official permission to speak to him with the next 48 hours."

Whereas The Scotsman article says: - "If Hearts play by the book, which they insist they will do, they will have to ask Motherwell for permission to speak to McGhee, who has a year left on his current contract at Fir Park. They have not yet done so, and therefore described as premature a report which claimed McGhee had been formally interviewed for the job by the Hearts owner, Vladimir Romanov."

The Scotsman, in turn, seems to be contradicting the EEN story above.

Somewhere amongst all of the above lies the truth but I wouldn't like to decide where! As my old school motto said "Truth will Prevail" so we'll just need to wait and see.
