Romanov is frustrated by delays over main stand

Published Date: 31 July 2008
HEARTS majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov has expressed frustration at the lack of progress over the redevelopment of the main stand at Tynecastle Stadium, conveying dismay at the slow pace of change in Scotland compared to China.
Romanov wants to build a new, bigger main stand to increase the ground capacity to 23,000 and provide improved facilities.

If planning permission is granted by the City of Edinburgh Council, the new structure will have two tiers, and seat 10,000 people. It will include 25 hospitality suites, two members' lounges and conference and dining facilities for up to 1,000 people.

Work is expected to begin in the summer of 2009, but that timetable has yet to be confirmed.

In an interview with his club's website, Romanov was asked to give an update on the stadium development project, which is crucial to Hearts' future business plan.

"It is dragging on, the bureaucratic side of things," lamented Romanov, who was at Ibrox last night to see Rangers take on Kaunas, the Lithuanian side sponsored by one of Romanov's companies.

"When you see sporting palaces going up overnight in China and we are talking about one stand, well it's not something I want to talk about at this moment."

It is expected that the redevelopment work will take between 18 and 24 months. The cost has been estimated at £51million, a daunting figure which should nevertheless be made more achievable this morning when a motion to convert £12million of Hearts' existing debt into equity will be passed at an egm at Tynecastle.

In his website interview, Romanov also stated he is planning to have less involvement with team affairs at Hearts now that new manager Csaba Laszlo is at the helm.

The Hearts majority shareholder's influence on team selection has led to friction with previous managers.

However, he appeared to soften his stance when Stephen Frail was given full responsibility in January after being installed as caretaker manager. Now that a six-month search for a permanent manager is finally over, Romanov is willing to hand over control to Laszlo.

"My target is to get involved in the business of the team less and less often," he said. "I don't want to get into that. I believe that, with Csaba Laszlo in charge, this dream of not having to do things with the team can continue. So far it has been smooth sailing. There has been no problem whatsoever. Working with Csaba Laszlo is good.

"He is professional and has achieved a lot already. Hopefully he will stand the ideological pressing of those around football."

Romanov added: "Csaba Laszlo has plenty of experience working in the football world that allows him to work with me and convince me with a lot of positions where the manager wants to do it his way. He can convince me of that and I can take that on board."

Laszlo is keen to add four or five new faces over the summer but Romanov was non-committal on the possibility of additions to the squad.

Hearts have been put through their paces on a pre-season tour in Germany and Romanov is satisfied with preparations for the new season.

He said: "This time everyone is working very hard and there is no discussion as to whether the training is right or wrong as was the case previously. The lads are obviously very tired and you can see they are tired but happy with this work."

Asked if he had a message for Hearts supporters, Romanov issued a them-and-us rallying cry to get the fans behind the team this season.

"I can only apologise to the fans for this torrent of lies and slurs that they have had to withstand from outside the club," said Romanov, a persistent critic of the Scottish media.

"The fact they have withstood it and they are backing Hearts means they are very honourable and this is good for the club to have."

I'm confused by the conversion of debt to shares thing. I understand the mechanics, but since the bank already owns the club and also the debt how does that change anything.

Lending yourself money to pay a debt to yourself seems a little crazy. Perhaps it's some financial game to make borrowing 51M more acceptable to the market given the financial outlook just now.

If there a financial wizard out there, please could you explain it for me.

Thanks

Oh! My! God! As a Jambo of long, LONG standing, I never thought I'd hear these conciliatory tones from Comrade Romanov....let's hope he is to be trusted (recent) history says no...but..what the hey...let's hope anyway. I would try to pre-empt by reading in the minutest detail the above article and heading them off at the pass ANY Hibernian inspired thread...think before you post lads...there's (I'm guessing here...lots of Hibs related moans to latch yourself onto)

my deepest apologies to mr romanov that we dont have 1.3 billion chinamen : earning 3 pence a week, in scotland to build him a stand. may i also remind him lithuania hasnt had an industrial revolution yet. he is lucky to be somewhere that has. he will surely console himself with the fact his other team will knock rangers out of europe, and hibs will lose a relegation dogfight against hearts at the end of this season

Anyone else read that Derek O'Riordan might be joining Hearts?

Im sure ive heard it all before, but it'd be bloody good timing if it happened now.

Celtic's Derek Riordan may be heading back to Edinburgh, with Hearts understood to be interested in the unsettled striker.

Hibs have dismissed speculation that they had made enquiries for the player who left Easter Road in June 2006.

But city rivals Hearts are thought to be lining up an offer for the 25-year-old forward.

Celtic are prepared to sell Riordan but are believed to want a fee in excess of £500,000 for him.

Riordan has made just 29 appearances for Celtic since leaving Hibs and Burnley and Leeds United have expressed a recent interest in the player.

However, Leeds were discouraged by the asking price, while the Turf Moor club have just signed winger Chris Eagles from Manchester United.

Thats taken from the BBC, they reported it earlier, sayng Celtic had admitted they had recieved interest from an "Edinburgh Club" for him, Hibs have came out and denied any link leaving only Hearts as the only other possible club, No comment from Hearts so far.

Reports going about that he is expected to arrive at Riccarton tomorrow to speak to Vlad, also reports saying He is keen on the move as long as personal terms are agreed.

#15 First off, Ukio Bankas is indeed a bank. Second off, the rest of your post is also rubbish and is made up of unsubstantiated lies. What makes you think you can accuse someone of money laundering like that? As for asset stripping, that'll be why Hearts rejected so many offers for players recently and stopped the sale of the ground.

#15. Everything in your post is absolute garbage, I don't know why you bothered spending so much time making it up! Just typical ill-informed, childish wishful thinking that we have come to expect from the likes of you.

#13. You work for Edinburgh City Counicl? I don't think so, probably don't have any job at all. You know nothing of the planning application and process involved. There is no reason whatsover to suppose that Hearts will not get planning permission.

#11. How can there be a stand built before the planning permission is in place - what a total idiot you are! Is there no end to your pathetic snivelling waste of bandwidth?

#1. You claim "you understand the mechanics" but then go on to demonstrate that you clearly don't understand anything about who owns Hearts and how converting £12m of loans into equity is good for Hearts. Go and look at the Hearts website because I can't be bothered drawing ABC 123 pictures for you.

Vlad is camouflaging things - He has some bad "building news" to impart but is starting to dress things up with a very contrived and thin veil.

On to better things - KEEP THINGS GOING KAUNAS
(nothing to do with - if they get to the Champions League Vlad will not force more sub standard players on us - at least of the Lithuanian variety- just genuinely hope they put Rangers out)

Martin Baine - TO55ER of the highest degree - "Incredulous that teams have disagreed with Rangers....." RE the 5% levy. This pompous eejit thinks the other SPL teams owe the Old Firm a living.
The vanity and ego of Rangers football club never ceases to amaze me.Yet again I will say , just wait until they HAVE to about turn and scuttle off with their tail between their legs. RANGERS AND CELTIC DO NOT HAVE THE GUTS TO FOLLOW THIS 5% THROUGH - INVERTABRATES.

And here was me thinking it would be quieter round here today. Ah well.

Rumour abour Riordan is an interesting one, I think he's the sort of player that we need (i.e. a striker), but I'd have my doubts over his commitment to the club - but I guess money, and a stalled career can bring out all sorts of hidden depths can't it? Would be an interesting one if true.

By the way, I see Driver's signed a new 5 year deal. Did he not sign one of them last season too?
Any ideas whats up there? More money to stop him being tempted by the Championship? Or one of these new fangled "performance pay" dealies that Vlad is so keen on all of a sudden?

Romanov is correct in many ways about the length of time it takes to get a simple planning application approved. This is not just something particular to scotland but the UK as a whole. Many attempts have been made at westminster and holyrood to improve the situation but due to the length of time it takes to get a bill passed we may see progress in about 5 years...

If you want something built in edinburgh just find a labour or libdem councillor or msp, bribe them or offer a job to one of their family members etc and the application will be approved in minutes- just look at the trams.

On a positive note i would like to say well done to Rangers. You managed a very credible draw against hearts (b) even though you were never allowed to field probably your most important players- the scottish refs and linesmen! I'm sure if the gfa had been in charge of the game you would have won 4-0.

I also heard that all police leave has been cancelled next monday, tuesday and wednesday in anticipation of the rangers fans visit next week. Can't wait to watch highlights of your fans behaviour on youtube- you tubes!

#32 Mornin Graham, mornin guys.

I don't like Riorden as a person, and the thought of him playing for us makes me slightly nauseus, HOWEVER the guy is a talent on the pitch, and i do actually believe he would give his best for us. He is not getting any younger, his career is in meltdown at present, if he has any aspirations to revive his career and his international career and prospects then he has to be playing football regularly, and playing well. If he signed I don't doubt he would give his best.

Busbyfh, you seem very certain that Vlad has bad news about the stand,
care to share the info you have? You are one of the most virulent Hearts fans on here so I'm wondering why you think it's not going to go ahead?

Also yes I'm here to cop the well deserved pasting about getting beat by the BUlly Wee last night. Laugh it up guys, we are mince right enough...

One question about the new manager though, it struck me last night that the only thing different between now and this time last season is Laszlo. I mean do the math,
Romanov x2, Check
Lopez, Check
Ogilve, Check
Korobotchka, Check
Cervenkov, Check

Looks a little too identical for much to really have changed around the place. Yet everyone is saying this guy is making the right noises. Remember you all agreed with the things Frail said too.

Then again my Entire board and management team need the sack too, so I'll put the stones away,eh?

Hibs humiliated by First Division Clyde

Hibs suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to first division Clyde at Broadwood last night to continue their miserable pre-season.

The club were also told that manager Mixu Paatelainen would serve a two-match touchline ban for his rant during Monday's pre-season defeat to Cowdenbeath.

Haha ha hahahahahaha

#38 My point exactly, he's what - 25 now? If he wants to reach the potential he showed back in the day he needs to be playing first team football bow. Otherwise he's in danger of wasting his career. I would hope that'd give him the spur to put his all into player for whoever he goes to. And, on the same note, I'd hope that sort of commitment would eventually win over the fans.

#41 "We tried to pass the ball but some players quite clearly are not yet, or maybe never will be good enough to do that."

What are the chances of this? The existing stands get demolished to make way for the new one, on completion of the demolishion the money mysteriously runs out and they cannot complete the work. The land is then sold to a Lithuanian property development company who stick up a block of flats on the site.

The alternative is that Mad-Vlad's plan is seen through and you Jambos will be enjoying generous portions of "pie in the sky" in the new hospitality suites.

Thing is with Riorden aswell is that he will be hungry to play and score goals and if he has a good couple of seasons scoring goals for Hearts he could get a move to the Premiership at just the right age.
Don't like the boy but total respect for his football ability and if he is wearing the maroon then i'm all for his signing, stick £500,000 in for him, £5000 basic wage and £2-3 grand a goal and could be another Hartley.

"Virulent" - Rancorous , severe , poisonous.

Sorry - but I disagree - Realist in most matters on here without wearing blinkers of any colour.
The only part of my writing that might be deigned "virulent" is when "talking" about Rangers. AN INSTITUION I DETEST AS A WHOLE.

Vlad is blaming the council (and yes they are petty and very slow) but he has spent the last few months searching for a manager and now players. During this time he has let certain deadlines slip by for signing/finalising contracts and agreements with the said Council and also neighbouring companies. Relationships must obviously now be strained.
That therefore leaves two choices :-
1. He no longer wishes to continue and blames the council.
2. He is blaming the Council as a cover for his own lack of organisation and needs to rebuild relations/deals/agreements/contracts.
Needless to say the second point is the preference.

Someone needs to come out and tell it how it is - are the plans acceptable ? do they need major changes ? and which parties really are responsible for the delay's. The Council as always will have been pernickety but they are no where near wholy to blame.

If Kaunus was to get through to the Champions League therefore giving Vlad extra millions , you might assume that he would re-cycle this money back into his footballing interests. Preferably us.
Yet another reason to want Kaunus to do well.

Remember though that Rangers got through many ties last season by their away results. It suits their negative style of play (which baffles me as they now posess 9 strikers)
Vlad - how about a wee word with the ref in the next leg......maybe not needed mind you as he won't be controlled by the SPL/SFA

Im a gers fan and il post where i please. Its a public forum.

Yes we have some d*ckhead posters who unfortunately have led to most Rangers/Celtc threads being withdrawn but there are many of us on both sides who are here to talk fitba and have a laugh (not laughing after last night though).

If you have a problem with ALL supporters from Glasgow regardless of thier behaviour then i suggest it is YOU who is the feeble minded bigot.

Cmon guys the Rangers fans are still reeling from the revelations of the man they worship,

http://www.theherald.co.uk/politics/news/display.var.2410641.0.Outrage_over_Tatchells_gay_William_of_Orange_claims.php

Then being held to a 0-0 by Hearts reserves at home, They must have a lot on their narrow minds at the moment.

this is maybe why the gers revere him so much

JJ#64,

Agreeing with me!! I'll have to put that right!:)

However, I'll "talk fitba" for a moment and I've got to say the Gers' standard of player has dropped to the level of Jock Wallace's teams of the mid-eighties!

Dailly was once a useful utility player for a number of clubs and his country, but he's two to three years past his best. McCulloch is as slow as a constipated bowel movement and couldn't open up a can of spaghetti hoops, nevermind a defence. The likes of Thomson and Adam are no more than journeyman, and their proper level should be plying their trade with the likes of Hamilton Accies.

On the plus side, you still have Scotland's captain to dig you out the holes that'll appear all through the season and Scotland's Kenny Miller should do enough to guarantee your Premier League staus!;)

I think in the current economic climate, with the credit crunch, the complete withdrawl of 100% mortgages by all banks and investment in property to let at an all time low... any plans to demolish Tynecastle and replace it with flats would be a very bad one indeed!

Not that we should be worrying about it really.

I agree re McCulloch and particularly Dailly. He can still do a job in defence but in midfield??

Thomson i dont agree with your assessment of. He is not a creative player but will develop into a fine player with the right players alongside him.

Remember though we have terrible injury problems. Burke, Naismith,Beasley and Ferguson will make a huge difference when it again. TBH i would rather have played 4-5-1 last night with Adam,Thomson and Hemdani across the middle, Miller and Lafferty on the flanks and Velika or Boyd up front.

Looking at the full picture though, these games are ALWAYS a struggle due to the timing of them and i still reckon we will go through. Midfield re-enforcements will be needed before the next round though and our season hinges on this.

'Debt for Equity' plans approved at EGM

- Shareholders unanimously pass all EGM resolutions on a show of hands

- Conversion of £12 million of debt into capital will strengthen the financial position of Heart of Midlothian plc

- Hearts cash flow will improve by removing the burden of £600,000 of interest per annum.

- Hearts accelerate the point at which it may return to profitability.

- Move underlines UBIG's long term development aspirations for Hearts.

- Approval will facilitate opportunities to raise external funding for redevelopment of Tynecastle stadium.

Heart of Midlothian plc (Hearts) shareholders voted this morning (31 July 2008) at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to approve plans that will reduce the club's debt by £12 million and increase capital in a 'Debt for Equity' Conversion. UBIG will now convert £12 million of the debt due to it by Hearts into Ordinary Shares.

Hearts will also now benefit from related savings of approximately £600,000 in annual interest charges.

The debt for equity plan provides further evidence of UBIG's aim to continue to develop Hearts on and off the field and, together with continued cost efficiencies, help the club reach profitability. The Conversion allows Hearts to benefit from a much stronger capital position and provides opportunities to raise external funding for the redevelopment of Tynecastle Stadium.

The directors of Hearts are also exploring what additional measures may be taken to further improve the financial situation of the company. Shareholders will retain their existing number of shares and continue to be part of the club.

(Tune of White Stripes) "King Billaayy is gaaayy!!"

Lol re the Riordan story this just gets regurgitated every time theres a transfer window. Every time I think its just spin to let us fans think we're being busy in the transfer market.

I've got to admit I hate the boy. From his kissing the badge in front of the Hearts fans at Easter Road when he scored to calling Rudi a refugee, the wee ned was a perfect hate figure.

I also however think he is the right type of player we would need, given his record.(and I would happily cheer his name if he played for us, we're not small minded like Gers are re Miller) But his time at Celtic is worrying; theres no smoke without fire and you can tell he is an arrogant wee sh** (pointing to his name when he scores)... obviously Strachan can be stubborn etc but he is a good manager who wouldnt leave a player out unless for good reasons i.e thinking he should walk straight into the team and then running to the Daily Record when he couldnt..

Even if he did overcome these problems and did us a good turn, how long would it be before he was engineering a move just like he did at Hibs, to whom he showed no loyalty even though they gave him his chance in football..

As for the Rangers performance last night, the verdict has to be - must do better. I don't see there being too big a problem doing the business against that mob away from home. But the tie should already be in the bag.

seems a little daft both of our super-duper teams putting their energies into building stands when they cant get a decent team on the park.

As for the Roirden story I cant believe some of the things im hearing from the jambos - do you not remember the Rudi Skacel story and how you wanted to string him up then - bunch of hypocrites the lot of you - Riorden wont be allowed to go to another SPL club - period - though id have him back at easter road in a flash right now

Why all the surprise regarding King Billy being a mincer?

Has anyone ever seen the pictures they have of him on the way into the orange halls?

Sat upon his horse with flowing hair, handle bar moustache and limp wrists....it was always an absolute stick on that he prefered the chuff to the tu-tu.

John Knox was another raging homoh....but thats for another discussion!

Mr Pimpernel - I am humbled.

Seriously though - William Hill have suspended betting on the first SPL manager to be given the boot.
Their book is lop sided with large liabilities on Pantyliner being given the bums rush.
10/1 into 11/4 joint favourite.
Who on earth would have thought this even just one month ago.
I reckon if FFFHibs lose their first two league games he is offski. The Jambo on here that has 10/1 (£20) must be rubbing his hands as their first game at Killie is far from easy. (don't know what their second game is)

# 85&86 - Good stuff
#102 - He liked young girls starting about 12 if my pea brain serves me.

Further to # 110 the FFFHibs start to the League is far easier than I thought - Killie Falkirk Inverness Motherwell for August's fixtures.
Pantyliner could not have wished for better.(3 out of bottom 6)

Beleive me - you hearts types don't know anything about (proper) football. The Gers will STEAMROLLER your first team next week, 3-0 or 4-0. As long as Miller doesn't play, we will have too much firepower for the diddy lithuanians.

Last season was just a taster - this season, we are well and truly looking at yet another treble, or possibly even that quadruple. the SPL can rob us once, but never again.

I should have said - how Hearts supporters can laugh at the Rangers - Unbeleivable.

Yous got beat by some diidy german teams. Your fans can't behave themselves when they come to Ibrox. Yous haven't won a trophy for 10 years. Your chairman is a madman. Your ground will soon be flats. You have no Scottish players.

Hearts? What a total embarassment.
