Nurse awarded MBE for work with smokers
A NURSE who was instrumental in starting smoking cessation services in Scotland received an MBE from the Queen at the Palace of Holyrood House yesterday.
Helena Connelly, smoking cessation co-ordinator for NHS Lothian, is the first nurse with her remit in Scotland to receive the honour for her contribution to health care.
Mrs Connelly set up the first "stop smoking" session at St John's Hospital in Livingston in 1993, and played key roles in heart patients starting to receive nicotine replacement therapy, and the Stop for Life project for pregnant women.
Dr Charles Winstanley, chairman of NHS Lothian, said: "We are delighted to see Helena being rewarded for all the hard work she does.
"It is a tribute to Helena's dedication that she is the first smoking cessation co-ordinator to receive such an honour."
