SCOTLAND'S Clare Queen and Lynn Kenny had four birdies in a first-round 71 but made a few too many mistakes as England's Trish Johnson and Rebecca Hudson grasped the lead on eight-under-par 64 at the inaugural £200,000 VCI European Ladies' Cup at La Sella Golf Club near Alicante in Spain.
The first day fourballs produced a flurry of low scores, and the Scots were lying 14th from the 20-team line-up but still well within striking range in the 72-hole event.

"It was a little disappointing," admitted Kenny. "It's criminal that we both had bogeys at three holes. You just can't afford to do that in fourballs.

"But, hopefully, we can pull it back. Tomorrow is a strange form of the greensomes and you never know what might happen."

Johnson and Hudson, the favourites, dovetailed perfectly and made eight birdies in a faultless round.
