JOHN WARK believes Scotland are crying out for a goalscoring midfielder – and insists Darren Fletcher could be the man for the job.
Wark made a name for himself thanks to his prolific record from the middle of the park with Ipswich, Liverpool and Scotland, once netting 36 goals in one season.
He would now love to see the current national team benefit from a player in a simi
lar mould to himself. And he reckons Manchester United's Fletcher could be helping the Scots rack up the goals in their forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.
"Scoring goals from midfield is a dying art, not only in Scotland but everywhere," said Wark. "Without giving it the big one, I don't know anybody in the Premier League who scores goals like I used to do.
"Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard can chip in with a few and Paul Scholes used to do it, but there's not many others.
"It's there if you want it. If you get in the box when balls come in then you will score goals. I just don't see any midfielders making runs into the box these days. I think Scott Brown has the engine to do it, but he doesn't score.
"I think Darren Fletcher should do a lot better because he's shown he can do it for Manchester United. I think if he gets in the box he is capable of scoring goals."
